Big Change Leeds is a new campaign instigated by Leeds Business Improvement District (LeedsBID) and Leeds City Council, with the support of Leeds Community Foundation, and in collaboration with third sector and grassroots organisations – all working together to look at long term help and solutions for those on the city’s streets. The idea is to raise awareness, inform, educate and engage people in ways to help those in need and change how they are being supported by getting people and businesses to come together and give effectively. It channels donations through a central online resource (Street Support Leeds) where everyone can contribute to lasting change. Charities and support services can apply for funds through the Leeds Community Foundation grants programme.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford
(Sir) Peter Fairbairn (1799-1861) Engineer On that spectacular occasion in 1858 when Queen Victoria came to smoky Leeds to open its magnificent new Town Hall, Peter Fairbairn took the lead role as Mayor and host. In his gorgeous brand-new robe of scarlet and ermine he was there to greet her, with Prince Albert and the two Princesses, as the royal train arrived. His carriage led hers in procession through the massed, wildly cheering crowds and the lavishly festooned streets to his home, Woodsley House in Clarendon Road. Here she and her entourage would spend the night – the first time she had ever slept in a commoner’s house (he and his family moved out!). The next day at the great Inauguration she invited him to kneel to receive his knighthood. What a moment for this self-made man who 30 years before had arrived in Leeds with next to nothing.
Born at Kelso in Walter Scott country, he was the youngest son of Andrew Fairbairn, a farmer who, he said, never earned more than 12 shillings a week. There was little money for the home or the children’s schooling. The family moved around for work but finally settled at a farm at Percy Main colliery near Newcastle. At eleven years old Peter had to start work, like his older brother William. At fourteen he was apprenticed for seven years to an engineering firm in Newcastle, and then spent time gaining work experience in France, London, and Manchester where William had set up a successful engineering business. He settled for a period in Glasgow as partner in a firm making spinning machinery, married in 1827, then looked for an opportunity to make his mark somewhere new. He came to Leeds, a hub for flax-spinning and fertile ground for innovation. He took lodgings in an inn in Marsh Lane, and rented a back room in Lady Lane where he worked late into the night with an old workmate from Glasgow on a radically improved flax-spinning machine. When he demonstrated it to the Marshalls, the top flax-spinning firm, he won a mass order and the promise of funding to help him go into production using the recently vacated Wellington Foundry. The deal went
ahead, the business took off and he was soon able to go it alone. He expanded and diversified, patenting some ground-breaking improvements in spinning and other machinery. An effective manager, he recruited skilled staff, organised into teams. By 1841 he was employing over 500 men at his Foundry (described as exemplary in smokeprevention). He was keen to export – when called as an expert witness to a parliamentary committee, he pressed for freedom for the manufacturers of Leeds ‘the metropolis of flax-spinning machinery’ to market their expertise overseas. His wife Margaret (Kennedy) had joined him from Glasgow, with their first child Andrew, and they soon moved to upmarket Park Square. He immersed himself in local cultural and civic life, joined the elite societies, stood for election to the council, invested locally in railways and the waterworks. An advocate for scientific education, he took a lead role in the Mechanics Institute. He was active too in Liberal politics, promoting parliamentary reform, free trade, religious freedom.

By 1840 he was making enough money to commission a grand house to be built in newlydeveloped Clarendon Road: a classical, pilastered mansion, richly decorated inside – Woodsley House (still there). Sadly, Margaret died suddenly in 1843, leaving him there with his two daughters (and numerous servants). He married again in 1855, a widowed friend, Rachel Brandling. This period was boom time for the Foundry, with big new orders for guns and military machinery during the Crimean War. He employed over a thousand men now and was one of Leeds’ leading figures. In 1854 he was elected Alderman; in 1857 Mayor. The costly new Town Hall was finally nearing completion and it fell to him to invite the Queen to open it: her acceptance generated frantic excitement.
As a personal gift he commissioned a marble statue of her for the Town Hall vestibule – it stands there still. Woodsley House was completely refurbished, and elaborate luxuries were ordered from London for royal use. The whole visit proved a fantastic success, acclaimed by the national press in gushing detail. Peter Fairbairn got most of the credit and a second term as Mayor – though some unkind commentators later accused him of having his head turned! Subscribers paid for a fine portrait of him in his wonderful outfit. This outstanding man, with his genial Father Christmas looks, inspired wide respect and affection and his sudden death in 1861 was deeply mourned. A statue of him was erected by subscription in Woodhouse Square near his home, but most remembered him for his leading part in that neverforgotten royal visit.

Fascinating Leeds firsts include: • Joseph Priestley who experimented on the constituents of air in the late eighteenth century, he created carbonated water. • From 1792, Benjamin Gott gathered all the elements of woollen textile production into one of the earliest factories. • The first steam locomotive in the world was Salamanca, built for the Middleton Railway by Matthew Murray. • John Barran pioneered readymade clothing in the 1850s. • Synthetic tanning agents were developed by Yorkshire Chemicals in 1916. • The world’s first science fiction convention was held in Leeds in 1937. • In 2005, Leeds was the first UK city to put on Light Night.
And numerous Leeds products have reached far-flung markets – for example Hunslet steam engines, Donald Nicholson’s diagram explaining metabolic pathways, and the Little Nipper mousetrap. AW Hainsworth clothed the British Army at the Battle of Waterloo and later invented the colour khaki. Now they make fire-resistant textiles and woollen coffins.

The first woman featured is Elizabeth Moxon who supported her family by publishing a recipe book in the 1740s. In the early nineteenth century Mary Vickers started a business that later became Vickers Oils, which still thrives today. Determined female reformers of the late nineteenth century have special prominence, and the contemporary section starts with Laura Wellington, co-founder of Duke Studios. Also included are Professor Irene Manton, Dame Fanny Waterman, Geraldine Connor, Nadine Senior, Corinne Bailey Rae, Irena Bauman and Stephanie Burras. Digital entrepreneur, Adam Beaumont, has been in the forefront of enabling Leeds to become a leading location for digital innovation. Chef Adam Smith founded ‘The Real Junk Food Project’ to deal with the co-existence of waste food and hunger. And, Harrison Spinks, making beds since 1840, is the world’s most vertically-integrated bed manufacturer.

Arts&Culture Northern Ballet’s ‘Nutcracker’ Returns to Leeds Grand

Northern Ballet’s enchanting festive favourite ‘The Nutcracker’ returns to Leeds Grand Theatre from 4th – 16th December. In the midst of a festive party, as the fire crackles and the pile of presents grows ever higher, Clara is caught up in the warmth and excitement of Christmas and becomes enthralled by her new Nutcracker doll. But, as the clock strikes midnight, her Nutcracker proves to be no ordinary toy. After saving her Nutcracker from the wily Mouse King, she is whisked away on the magical journey of a lifetime through a winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes and the famous Sugar Plum Fairy. Choreographed and directed by Artistic Director David Nixon, ‘The Nutcracker’ is set to the famous Tchaikovsky score played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia. The production features stunning Regencystyle sets by Charles Cusick-Smith, with lighting by Mark Jonathan. A Very British History – The Jews of Leeds tumultous periods of British history with the rise of Fascism during the 1930s. Simon’s great grandmother, Rebecca Miller, followed in the footsteps of an uncle, who had already arrived in Leeds and was working as a tailor. It was shortly after the Industrial Revolution so Leeds needed lots of cheap labour.

Simon Glass, a young film director from Leeds, will present the TV documentary ‘A Very British History: The Jews of Leeds’ on BBC One in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire on the 10th December. It will then be shown nationally on BBC Four in early 2019. The programme tells the story of thousands of Jews who migrated from Russia and the Baltic to Yorkshire at the turn of the last century. Simon’s own family originates from Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus. Like thousands of others, they travelled to Hull and Grimsby in the 1890s and early 1900s, escaping persecution, pogroms and poverty, and dreaming of a better life. The programme follows their journey from Russia to ‘The Leylands’ in Leeds where they found themselves forced into a notorious ghetto. There were many challenges for the newcomers especially during one of the darkest and most
Simon goes to Lithuania and Belarus to track down his family and discover why they left for Leeds. He finds that poverty was the main driver. Like today’s refugees they had to undertake gruelling train journeys, through Baltic ports on overcrowded ships and on to Hull. Even today the villages in Belarus are lacking in facilities – then they were poverty stricken. This was a journey that Simon had wanted to make ever since he was a teenager. He said it was truly a ‘great privilege’ to travel to the places where the story of Jewish migration began. In the programme he visits Vilnius in Lithuania – once known as the ‘Jerusalem of the North’ the place his family talked about when he was growing up in Leeds. Then over the border into Belarus where he makes remarkable discoveries about his family members who stayed behind in Vasilishok, a small Jewish village. Today Leeds boasts the third largest Jewish community in the UK and many people, like Simon, can trace their roots back to Eastern Europe at that time. He talks to members of the local community – including family, Ira B who gives him a lesson in Jewish cookery, and the Brightbart twins, the last remaining Jewish tailors in Leeds.

Arts&Culture New Exhibition at University of Leeds Explores Consumerisation A new exhibition at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, University of Leeds, explores the notion of consumerism through the lens of historical and contemporary still life artworks. ‘Still Life: Things Devouring Time’ builds on this historical exploration of consumerisation by displaying the still life works of four contemporary artists – Simon Ward, Dawn Woolley, Caroline McCarthy and Nicole Keeley. Each refreshes this historical genre, for instance Simon Ward’s ‘Ghost in the Machine’ replaces the book, used in Dutch still life to symbolise knowledge and intelligence, with a kindle. “Still life is an enduring genre in which objects take centre stage”, said Dr Katie Herrington, the University’s Art Curator. “It became an

Nicole Keeley’s ‘Tide Mark’ photographs remind us that consumer habits are detrimental to the planet we live on. "Dutch vanitas paintings warn of the damage to the soul that greed, excess and waste may cause”, said Dawn Woolley, exhibiting artist and exhibition co-curator. “Today, they might warn us about irreversible environmental consequences caused by our unsustainable consumer habits. The artworks in this exhibition contain contradictions, unexpected use of materials and unusual combinations of objects to challenge the values championed in consumer culture." Arts&Culture Leeds Grand Theatre Celebrates 140 Years
Leeds Grand Theatre has just turned 140 years old! Built in 1878, the theatre is an intriguing mix of Romanesque and Victorian Gothic styles and is famed for its sumptuous interior, plasterwork and other decorative features. The brainchild of architect George Corson, the build took 13 months to complete at a cost of £62,000. The overall scheme embraced six shops, Assembly Rooms, a Supper Room and large cellars. It was deemed ‘ahead of its time’ and was once described as ‘probably the finest of its size in Britain’. Opening night featured Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ starring the then actor-manager and playwright Wilson Barrett. Stars who have since trodden the boards include Laurence Olivier, Julie Andrews, Elton John, Peter Kay, Cliff Richard, Tommy Steele, Morecambe and Wise, Ken Dodd, and Bruce Forsyth. In recent years, The Grand has welcomed Fern Britton, Dara O’Briain, Jake Bugg, Andrew Flintoff, Nigel Havers, Jane McDonald, Sting, Joan Armatrading and many more. Seating 1,466 at full capacity, the auditorium provides a home for performances of all types, including its resident companies Opera North and Northern Ballet. Since its ‘transformation’ in 2006, the theatre has hosted the best of the West End and other touring productions, including large musicals, drama from the National Theatre, comedians and music. It also provided a venue for the world premieres of Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s, The Girls (2015), and Fat Friends The Musical (2017), written by award-winning writer, Kay Mellor. “Leeds Grand Theatre has welcomed an incredible number of diverse entertainers and shows over the past 140 years and will continue to do so for many years to come”, said Chris Blythe, CEO. “Thanks to the enduring support of the people of Leeds, the theatre has weathered substantial challenges throughout its 140 years. Leeds Civic Hall Become Stage for Play Celebrating Suffragettes
Front Room Productions and Wrongsemble present ‘We Are Outlaws: the Leeds Suffragette Story’, a new play commissioned by Leeds City Council and the Centenary Cities Project, at Leeds Civic Hall on Friday 14th December at 6pm and 8pm. The 14th December is the centenary of the first General Election in which some women could vote. This brand new show, celebrating the life and politics of Leonora Cohen, Leeds’ very own ‘Tower Suffragette’, will be performed in promenade around the magnificent spaces of the Civic Hall. Audiences will be taken on an immersive journey through the origins of the Women’s Suffrage movement, on both a local and national level. Along the way they’ll meet some familiar faces – Christabel Pankhurst and Emily Davison for example – as well as lesser known local heroines such as Mary Gawthorpe, Jennie Baines, and Charlotte Marsh – all active in Leeds’ fascinating suffragette past.
“Leonora Cohen was a remarkable woman”, said Elvi Piper, dramaturg and artistic director of Wrongsemble. “Heavily influenced by the plight of her mother as a widow and poorly paid sweated worker, she was gripped from a very young age by the desire to take action against the unfair disenfranchisement of women.” The world of the suffragettes will be created with the help of a community cast from in and around Leeds, recruited to assume the roles of Leonora’s fellow suffragettes, and other figures from their story. There will also be design workshops in which people will make banners and placards, just like the WSPU would have done. “We hope to foster a sense of community in the spirit of the Women’s Social and Political Union”, said Olivia Race, Director. “The community cast is integral to creating the immersive the show’s effect.”
“The sense of history will be palpable”, said Alice Barber, Producer. “It’s a real privilege to be performing in a space so closely connected to the city, just metres from streets where we know Leeds’ key suffragettes took part in deputations and were arrested as a result.” The action will be underscored by live music and vocal arrangements, repurposing familiar tunes from the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, The Smiths, and David Bowie. Joe Williams Receives Points of Light Award Joe Williams, the founder and director of ‘Leeds Black History Walk’ and ‘Heritage Corner’, was recently presented with the 1027th Points of Light Award by the Prime Minister, Theresa May. The award was in recognition of exceptional service celebrating African history and diversity in Leeds. Since 2009, Joe has shared otherwise untold African narratives in local and world history with members of the public. The twohour walk starting at University of Leeds explores African narratives and positive contributions to British history, such as the connections Ethiopian royalty had to Queen Victoria. His ‘Heritage Corner’ project hosts educational workshops about the historic African presence in Yorkshire, using dance and poetry. He has worked with top artists and cultural experts to lead inclusive workshops at the British Library and the University of Leeds.
“I am surprised to be honoured and humbled to be in the company of previous winners”, said Joe. “African history is neglected in mainstream

Artists Shortlisted for Sculpture Championing Women’s Achievements in Leeds
Murder in Yorkshire! Stephen Wade is a writer and historian specialising in the history of crime. He has written over 70 nonfiction works – many on the history of crime and the law. Presents its Fiftieth Show in Five Years Sunny Bank Mills Gallery in Farsley celebrates its fifth year and fiftieth exhibition with a display by artist Mel Davies, who first exhibited in the space before it was even a gallery. Lofthouse Park served as a prisoner-of-war camp for over 1,000 captured German officers and orderlies ‘Pleasure, Privilege, Privations’, a new exhibition at Leeds Local and Family History Library, explores the history of Lofthouse Park, a First World War camp for civilian internees and military prisoners. Lofthouse Park was a pleasure park for the people of Yorkshire until 1914. When war broke out, the site (located between Leeds and Wakefield) was transformed into an internment camp for 1,500 civilian 'enemy aliens'. From October 1918 until December 1919, it served as a prisoner-of-war camp for over 1,000 captured German officers and orderlies. The exhibition is part of the British German research and public engagement project ‘In the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time’, led by Claudia Sternberg (Legacies of War, University of Leeds) and independent historian David Stowe, and supported by the WWI Engagement Centre for Hidden Histories at the University of Nottingham. The exhibition was developed with postgraduate

£500,000 Investment
& Delight at St Vincent’s Spring
Community-led Bramley Baths has secured funding of £500,000 to establish a new eco-hub at the Edwardian Grade II Listed building. This investment will reduce energy costs by up to 40%, reducing its environmental impact and allowing the social enterprise to re-invest the savings. Power to Change, an independent trust whose funding is used to strengthen community businesses across England, has provided just over £295,000 from its Community Business Fund. Sport England has offered a further £75,000, and the rest will come from a loan and The Baths’ financial reserves. The investment will replace the existing ageing machinery and reduce to ‘practically zero’ the number of pool closures due to technical problems. The improvements will lead to improved water quality and clarity and a reduced need for chemicals. A new air filtration system means better air quality and a computerised system will better control temperatures in the pool area, studio and gym and achieve a
better balance between humidity in the building and water temperature. New air conditioning will also mean much lower energy usage. “This is just the first phase in our plans to invest in the building”, said Bramley Baths CEO Sue Stones. “We hope to follow this up with a project on a similar scale to update the rest of the Baths.” The pool will close for three weeks from Monday 17th December, but the studio and gym will remain open most of this time. Bramley Baths dates back to 1904. It has been a community-led social enterprise since 2013. A community business is led by and for the community and uses its profits to make the local area a better place to live, work and visit. Last month’s Bramley Baths AGM revealed the business had an incredible 16 per cent sales growth during the last financial year, and an increased turnover of £608,000.

If your usual collection day is a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, for two weeks from Sunday 23rd December your delivery will be one day later. If your usual collection day is a Monday, your bin will be collected on Sunday 23rd December and Monday 31st December. Finally, if your usual bin collection day is a Tuesday, it will be collected on Monday 24th December and Wednesday 2nd January. From Monday 7th January everything returns to normal.
Moving away from rubbish news, Leeds City Council is currently consulting on changes to how it allocates children places at local Primary Schools. Problems in ensuring that local children get into local primary schools (in some cases schools less than half a mile from their homes) have been well covered in recent years. The Council is hoping that by creating catchment areas for Primary Schools, parents will have a better chance of getting their children into the school closest to where they live. I would also like to know your thoughts, both about the proposals and any difficulties or worries you may have around school places. CommunityNews The Will to Change Lives for CHSF As it celebrates thirty years as a charity, the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) is asking people to consider including it in their Wills. Formed in 1988, the charity has awarded hundreds of grants to the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit (LCHU), thanks to the fundraising of its supporters. Over 17,500 congenital heart disease patients of all ages pass through the LCHU every year. Next year, the Unit will welcome a revolutionary hybrid heart theatre and all the integrated medical equipment was funded by CHSF supporters through their Keeping the Beat appeal. The charity’s income has also been bolstered in recent years by a number of legacy gifts. In 2011 a legacy was instrumental in helping CHSF fund the successful Save our Surgery campaign. The donation also contributed to vital life-saving equipment which continues to change lives for the better.
“The needs of the LCHU are growing and evolving and the CHSF’s long-term strategy to support hearts for life depends on the continued fundraising and engagement of our valued supporters”, said Sharon Milner, CHSF CEO. “Big or small, legacy contributions make a huge difference to patients and families in our region. “Our charity is wholly self-funded, and without supporters’ donations we would not have been able to make the difference we have over three decades. Have You Seen Oakwood Farmers’ Market’s Banners? Oakwood Farmers’ Market is held at the Oakwood Clock on the third Saturday of every month and run by volunteers on a not for profit basis, and, believe it or not, someone has stolen their banners! They have permission to display banners at various locations in the week before each market. But, recently four of their banners have been taken from the Clock itself, and another from the Roundhay School fence. The Committee is currently working with the Community Police. If anyone can shed any light on these thefts, please contact reap-leeds.org.uk or talk to them at the next market. These banners cost £30 apiece and their loss is not sustainable.
The market’s aims include helping the local economy by attracting people to Oakwood, promoting healthy eating and reducing food miles, developing community spirit and providing an enjoyable experience for all. “This is so disappointing”, said Pat Urry, Committee Chairperson. “We all hope very much that we can get to the bottom of this and get on with running the Farmers’ Market for local people.”

Leeds Women’s Aid is celebrating 45 years since they opened their first women’s refuge – the first outside London. The charity has continued to provide safe refuge accommodation and other vital support services for women and children in Leeds who have been affected by domestic violence and abuse.
Leeds Women’s Aid is now the biggest women’s charitable organisation in Leeds and is the lead partner in two consortia projects: Leeds Domestic Violence Service and Women’s Lives Leeds. It supports hundreds of families affected by domestic violence and abuse every year. “In 1973 a group of feminist activists persuaded Leeds City Council to rent us a property at a peppercorn rate so that women experiencing domestic violence might have somewhere safe to live”, said Leeds Women’s CEO. “Since then LWA has gone from strength to strength. I am proud of our achievements and services, staff and volunteers, trustees and service users.”

The Common Crane is a large bird of wetlands, larger even than a Grey Heron, with long legs and neck, and a sloping body with drooping, curved feathers at the rear which are sometimes referred to as a ‘bustle’. Its plumage is mainly grey with black wing tips, and its head is striped black and white with a red patch at the base of the crown. The juvenile has a plain reddish-brown head and neck. It is a very beautiful and unmistakeable bird, whether seen walking gracefully around feeding or in flight, when its long neck is held straight and its legs trail behind. The call of the crane is an evocative, loud trumpeting note, called ‘bugling’. It lives in a variety of habitats – forest clearings, wetlands or agricultural land – but it must be safe from predators, especially in the breeding season. Its nest is a large pile of vegetation, built on the ground and added to over the season, and it usually lays two eggs.
Most of the cranes we see in the UK are migrants from further north who spend the Winter here, but there are a small number of breeding birds in eastern England, who re-established themselves in 1981. Also, since 2010 a project has been underway to reintroduce cranes to the Somerset Levels. The main breeding areas for Cranes are in northern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and parts of Asia. York Gate Garden Welcomes Record Numbers of Visitors “Our fantastic Summer season was boosted by the good weather”, said Ben Preston, Head Gardener. “So, thank you to everyone who visited this year, as well as all of our wonderful volunteers. York Gate may be a small garden but there is always lots to see and plenty of ideas to take home. And we haven’t finished for the year yet – we will be holding a special nine-day Christmas Event at the beginning of December.”
York Gate Garden in Adel welcomed over 10,000 visitors during the 2018 season. The garden is owned and run by the charity Perennial, which looks after people from the world of horticulture during tough times and is open from early April until the end of September.

At a time of year when there are fewer insects around, flowers need to be very fragrant to attract pollinators. Shrubs such as these will fill your garden with perfume. Here are a few of the best. Winter Honeysuckle is a large shrub which is worth
Sarcococca hookeriana var Humilis (better known as Christmas Box) produces small, delicious honey and vanilla scented white blooms from November to May. Evergreen and tolerant of dry shade, it makes excellent ground cover, growing to about a metre tall.

Lonicera fragrantissima – Winter Honeysuckle is a large shrub which is worth growing for its fragrant creamy white flowers borne on bare stems through the Winter. In Spring the new leaves emerge tinged with bronze for some early colour.
Edgeworthia chrysantha ‘Red Dragon’ is probably the most unusual on this list and offers a number of valuable characteristics including intense fragrance and eyecatching, ball-shaped, inflorescences of small red blooms. It’s also hardy and easy to grow. Height around 150cm. Mahonia x media ‘Charity’ forms a striking focal point in a shady corner of the garden bearing spikes of brightest yellow, sweet smelling blooms from November to March. The spiky evergreen foliage looks stunning all year round, and the clusters of blue berries that follow can be made into jams and pies. Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Charles Lamont’ is a deciduous member of the useful Viburnum clan. On bare stems over the Winter months it produces delightful pink flowers which gradually fade to white and have the most delicious perfume. It makes a lovely cut flower and also offers an excellent show of yellow and orange foliage in Autumn. Skimmia x confusa ‘Kew Green’ doesn’t produce the glossy berries of many of its relatives but more than compensates with cone shaped lime green flower heads, each composed of tiny, scented, star shaped blossoms. The aromatic evergreen foliage makes it a great addition to a shady bed where it will grow to a modest 90cm.

WIDOWS DIRECTED BY: STEVE MCQUEEN STARRING: VIOLA DAVIS, MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ, ELIZABETH DEBICKI, CYNTHIA ERIVO, COLIN FARRELL, BRIAN TYREE HENRY, DANIEL KALUUYA, JACKI WEAVER, CARRIE COON, ROBERT DUVALL, LIAM NEESON CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 129 MINS “No one thinks we have the balls to pull this thing off”, snaps Viola Davis in Steve McQueen’s latest movie. It’s a line you can’t shake off whilst watching it. Widows is a thriller based on Lynda La Plante’s 1983 television series of the same name. The movie opens with the deaths of several criminals following a botched robbery. When their widows discover that a massive debt remains unpaid, it’s down to them to finish a big job that one of their husbands left unfinished.
An all-star cast delivers superlative performances from a slightly overcooked screenplay. Viola Davis pulls focus in a nuanced study of Veronica, allowing McQueen to train his lens on details such as her fingertips, eyes and mouth. It’s an intimate engagement with grief and independence, examining her gradual transformation from victim to rebel. Regrettably, Elizabeth Debicki and Michelle Rodriguez are less developed as the additional widows, whilst Liam Neeson, Robert Duvall and Colin Farrell star as reasonably ineffective and miserable middle-aged white men. Perhaps there were just too many characters to properly round off in two hours. Thankfully Daniel Kaluuya injects some much-needed urgency and tension as a psychotic killer. The movie is more successful in its exploration of race relations and gun crime in Chicago. A particularly poignant scene frames a black youth gunned down by trigger-happy police officers; a landscape of Obama posters inscribed with HOPE can’t be missed in the background. It’s a poignant moment where nothing is said, yet the message is profound and pointed through imagery alone. Widows’ problem is that it doesn’t know if it’s a Hitchcockian thriller, a B-movie action piece or a polemic on contemporary American politics. It’s possible to combine all three, but the film struggles to contain these ideas fluently across several subplots within two hours. The result is an engaging yet uneven action thriller with some superb performances and an interesting subtext. Unfortunately, many strands are ill-served by an imposing, inevitable Hollywood climax which comes late in the event with too much convenience to ring true.
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY DIRECTED BY: BRYAN SINGER & DEXTER FLETCHER STARRING: RAMI MALEK, LUCY BOYNTON, GWILYM LEE, BEN HARDY, JOSEPH MAZZELLO, AIDAN GILLEN, TOM HOLLANDER, MIKE MYERS CERT: 12A RUNNING TIME: 134 MINS Bohemian Rhapsody hit the screen last month with critics offering little praise for the long-awaited Queen biopic. Following accusations of cheap production values and revisionist, clichéd story-telling, does the big seller at the box office deserve its reputation as a toothless rockography? It’s all about expectations. Queen has been an integral part of popular culture for over 45 years and the stories behind the band are some of the best known in the industry. Within the limits of a 12A certificate, and under the creative cosh of two band members, perhaps it’s unrealistic to expect a movie that can truly mirror Freddie Mercury’s legend and lifestyle. What we get is a colourful cartoon musical - highlights of Queen forming, touring, quarrelling and reuniting up tthe infamous Live Aid performance. Meanwhile all the drugs, sex and goodness knows what else is notably played down. But this is a movie made to sell records to a family audience, showcasing Queen’s discography as no music video could. The live performances are recreated with exceptional visual effects and an expansive sound mix, bringing the scope and scale of stadium rock to life on screen. On a musical level it sounds and feels
huge, delivering a visceral cinematic experience. Only the drama lets the movie down, with some clunky dialogue that’s mostly covered by capable performances. Rami Malek’s energetic and posturing lead brilliantly captures Mercury’s sure-footed stage presence, whilst Gwilym Lee hands over a captivating, uncanny and wistful copy of Brian May. Roger Taylor and John Deacon are less developed background figures, though Joseph Mazzello is a dead ringer for the band’s infamously low-profile bassist. Bohemian Rhapsody is far from a bad film, but it’s not a confident interrogation of the real Farrokh Bulsara either. Whilst the movie doesn’t fully capture the man behind Freddie Mercury, it certainly showcases the measure of his music. That alone makes it a gig well worth catching.

‘A man with a voice from beyond the grave’ Steve Phillips (Notting Hillbillies) Mister Dodo Bones has enjoyed a wild and varied life in this sometimes wacky world of music. He was Jack Bentley in The Jack Bentley Blues Band, which featured Richard Treece (Help Yourself) and co-founded the legendary acid-folk band Moonkyte, who released the album ‘Count Me Out’. Mister Dodo Bones also played with a variety of well-known blues artists and has been an independent label owner, distributor and music publisher.
According to Brendan Campbell: “Mr Dodo Bones and his One-Eyed Jacks lay down a twangy, rattling, lo-fi, down-home country blues with a junkyard aesthetic and songs that speak of a life hardlived, questionable decisions and many a lost weekend. Add a voice that sounds scraped up off the floor after a bar fight accompanied by instrumentation and arrangements infused with a sozzled, toetapping rhythm and lurching melodies. In contrast to scores of bluesman wannabes and posers, Dodo Bones carries an air of authenticity and makes a case for the River Aire being Yorkshire's own Mississippi Delta.”
Then there was a brief hiatus from music to concentrate on restoring the lost paintings of his grandad Walter C. Foster (1887 – 1929). He has now rekindled his first love, hard-nosed, left-field, blues and Country music. The beast within demanded to be heard and it is being heard. He dusted down his array of guitars, played a few selected solo gigs and then set about recruiting some great musicians – and the fiery Mister Dodo Bones and One Eyed Jacks was born. Women’s Animation Workshop Celebrates 40th Anniversary This year is the fortieth anniversary of Leeds Animation Workshop – a little known women’s co-operative making animated films and operating from a small studio in Harehills. This unique organisation is an independent, not for profit company, producing broadcast-quality f ilms collectively, and distributing them all over the world. The Workshop’s forty or so films have all been designed to help start conversations about issues such as equality, climate change, social justice – or family subjects like parenting, bereavement, and child protection. The group has fewer than half a dozen members, including some with several decades of experience and others who are still studying. Two young women recently made a film, ‘Own Skin’, about body image, during a threemonth internship at the Workshop. Their film premiered at Hyde Park Picture House in September and won a place in this year’s Leeds International Film Festival. The group may be small, but its films go a long way – they’ve been translated into many languages and screened on every continent except Antarctica. ‘They Call Us Maids – the Domestic Workers’ Story’ is a recent production that has won awards in the Philippines and Los Angeles and was named Best UK Film on Modern Slavery
earlier this year. Most recently it was screened in Washington DC as part of a festival about immigration. The Workshop’s fortieth anniversary was marked by a series of events at Anim18, a celebration of British animation. The organisers of London’s Feminist Film Festival have arranged a screening of selected films by Leeds Animation Workshop at the Rio Cinema on Sunday 2nd December. They have chosen several of the Workshop’s equality series, based on well-known fairytales, and narrated by Alan Bennett. One of these, ‘Did I Say Hairdressing? I Meant Astrophysics’ is featured on the British Film Institute website’s list of Ten Great Animated Films Directed by Women. New Year 2019 will see the group host another of their popular one-day workshops for beginners, where everyone makes a short animated film by the end of the day. “We give them lots of individual attention”, said Annie Warwick. “It’s pretty intense, but everyone always has a great time!” Booking is essential, see www. leedsanimation.org.uk for details. ‘The Story’ by Gina Atkins ‘The Story’ is a three track EP by Leeds singer/ songwriter Gina Atkins, officially launched on October 23rd to assist in a fundraising effort for Cloth Cat Leeds. The funds raised from both the launch night and the EP (available on itunes) are intended to help Cloth Cat continue its work with young people in Leeds, building larger networks, and reaching more people who might not otherwise have access to music classes and workshops. The EP itself is worth the money. While short (only three tracks) each one displays the tremendous technical ability associated with Leeds College of Music, not just musically but also in terms of stylistic awareness and craft. The first track ‘Smile’ features a punchy rhythmic riff throughout, driving the song forward. The second, ‘Beautiful’,
follows with an open cymbal count, carrying the energy forward before dropping back into a far more relaxed vibe, softer, more jazzy, more soulful, more reverb on the guitars, but still returning a hard hitting hook every refrain. Finally, ‘Listen Up’ opens with a gentle keyboard tune, introducing Gina Atkins solo voice carrying the listener back into the band which joins one by one. The punch and the kick are more like punctuation than the focus, highlighting sometimes playful, sometimes gentle, always emotive vocals. This EP is not just the work of a single individual but exemplifies the collaborative spirit of the artistic community of Leeds. It was produced by Ali Burns (also of LCM), and for those who seek something physical in their music collection, the CD also features artwork by Lauryn Young.

Festive Tales with Wrongsemble at Leeds Central Library Leeds Central Library is collaborating with Wrongsemble theatre company to create ‘The Princess & the Sprout & Other Festive Tales’, a Christmas family show featuring live music and running from 7th – 31st December. The show is designed specifically for 3 – 8 year olds and will be performed in a pop-up theatre space in Leeds Central Library. The library's collections will be woven into the tales, with each story being set in the city. “It was important to us to represent the communities we serve here – in Wrongsemble’s home town!” said Elvi Piper, Artistic Director. “Libraries are magical places filled with stories and opportunities, and we want to encourage young people to enjoy these incredible spaces, championing the joy of reading and the power of the imagination.” The festive tales will embody Wrongsemble’s characteristically mischievous style and will be bursting with original music. Audiences can expect a retelling of ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’ and a reimagining of ‘The Red Shoes’ that transforms the tragic fable into

All Wrongsemble’s work is rooted in a relaxed atmosphere, so families can really enjoy these magical productions. The company is staging two Relaxed Performances, BSL Interpreted shows of ‘The Princess and the Sprout’ and offering heavily subsidised tickets throughout the run. A well-established company for young people aged eight to 17, the Youth Theatre is known for its highquality take on classic shows which are performed every Summer at City Varieties. The Winter show offers the multi-faceted group a chance to create its own works, including writing, directing and set design. “This is one of the best new plays for a young cast that I have read for a very long time”, said Artistic director Lizi Patch. “It has a tight plot, well-rounded characters, humour and pathos. Every member of the group has a meaty part and I have an excellent play to direct!”
In response to the question ‘what matters to you?’, Group 2 (ages 11 – 14) and Group 3 (14 – 17) have created several pieces under the umbrella title ‘sensa’, whilst Group 1 members (8 – 11) will perform ‘Darcy in Happylandia’, written by Olivia Mee (12), with input from Abby Marshall (11). This is the first time that younger members have written their own work. “I have been a member of the City Varieties Youth Theatre for around five years and I really enjoy it”, said Olivia. “In the Youth Theatre I have learned to take opportunities and run with them. Writing a script is hard work but with perseverance and determination it is the best feeling hearing someone read your words. It's amazing!” “My career as a youth theatre director has been fuelled by the honour of helping young artists to find and develop their creative passion”, said Lizi Patch. “I am chuffed to have been able to give the green light to Olivia to write a play for Group 1 to perform. She soaks everything up and works tirelessly in sessions, making the most of every opportunity. Abby was also interested in writing and so Olivia left a whole scene for her to write." Beanstalk Celebrates a Decade of Helping Children to Read Beanstalk is celebrating the dedication of Lesley Matthews, who has been volunteering with the children's reading charity in Yorkshire for ten years. Lesley volunteers as a reading helper through the Reading 321 programme where a volunteer supports three children, twice a week for one academic year. Sessions are one-to-one and child-focused, allowing them to choose the books they wish to read. Beanstalk recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work with children aged three to thirteen who need extra reading support. In 2017-18 25% of children left primary school unable to read at the expected level. Beanstalk operates several programmes that helps children to improve their reading skills enabling them to thrive.
"The Yorkshire team is so proud of Lesley who has been a fantastic reading helper and made a huge difference to the many children she has supported over the last decade�, said Amy Mortimer, Beanstalk's area manager for Yorkshire. “She is so dedicated, enthusiastic and has so much experience of what works best with the children." On Saturday 15th December, young literature fans will get the chance to search for hidden extracts from a book and uncover the next part of the story at the #foundfiction story hunt at Kirkstall Abbey.

The story hunt is staged by the #foundfiction project, which connects readers and writers worldwide through short stories that are left in random public spaces. Since 2013, #foundfiction has distributed around 4,000 stories via a community of writers and distributors in 14 countries, and has published literature in English, French and Polish. “The idea is simple”, said #foundfiction founder Steve Clarkson. “Writers send us stories, which we print out, fold into envelopes marked READ ME and leave in public spaces for people to find. Stumbling upon a piece of #foundfiction marks a special connection between writer and reader – that’s the power of literature. “Books were my world when I was a kid so I’m passionate about sparking children’s literary imaginations and creativity. We’ve started running workshops for kids to sharpen their writing skills, and this story hunt at Kirkstall Abbey is a great way to get them excited about reading.”
Together with their parents they will delve into a world of fantasy, adventure and magic as they hunt for extracts from ‘Through the Uncrossable Boundary’ – Daniel Ingram-Brown’s thrilling conclusion to ‘The Firebird Chronicles’. Each extract will hold a clue to the whereabouts of the next, all tucked away in specific locations across Kirkstall Abbey, a significant setting in the novel and they’ll be encouraged to share their experiences on social media using the #foundfiction hashtag. The first to find all five extracts will win a signed copy of ‘The Firebird Chronicles trilogy’ and everyone taking part will be able to meet
“This will be a special day for me, as parts of the Firebird Chronicles are set at the Abbey, and one of the main characters lives in Kirkstall”, said Daniel IngramBrown. “This is a book that deals with some difficult issues, like depression and grief, but it does so through a story that children can get lost in and enjoy, with a magical ending on Christmas Eve.” The story hunt runs from 10am – 4pm. You’ll find the first extract, which will contain a clue to the whereabouts of the second, at the entrance. Each clue leads you to the next, until you’ve traced all five.
