Once the niche pastime of the cash strapped, image conscious, patchouli-oiled student, vintage is now thoroughly mainstream. V schedules are peppered with programmes such as ‘Cash In The Attic’, and a plethora of lifestyle programmes focusing on re-using and up-cycling. Vintage is more than just a fad, it’s here to stay. The chances are that your home is furnished with a combination of new, secondhand, and inherited furniture. But if you are someone who wants to up the vintage ante, or are perhaps furnishing your home for the first time, where do you start?
The four vintage tribes There are four major vintage tribes – the ultra-cool, retro, Mid-Century Modernist, whose aspirations are the Danish furniture designers of the 50s, 60s and 70s like Borge Mogensen and Kofod Larsen, or the more reasonably priced but equally beautiful British post war G Plan, Ercol or Macintosh; The hopelessly romantic ‘Shabby Chicer’ who likes their furniture to look as if it’s been rescued from a crumbling French chateau; The Traditionalist who gravitates more towards the Arts (Crafts, Deco, Nouveau); and The Industrialists, where it’s all rusting bare metal and re-purposed vintage factory furniture. The knack is to find a period or style that suits you. Old and new work beautifully together. The new
sharpens and freshens, while the vintage adds integrity. Antique, retro or salvaged furnishings instantly inject a dash of warmth and soul.
They don’t make it like they used to! There’s a lot of truth to the old adage ‘they don’t make furniture like they used to’. Many vintage furniture makers and designers had a respect for craftsmanship and a reverence for natural materials such as wood, often making a feature of the grain. Even mass producers like G Plan and Ercol still had quality at the forefront of their minds. This is why
these pieces stand the test of time. Vintage furniture, especially Mid-Century Modern is the antique of the future. Buy savvy, invest in classic design pieces that retain, or even increase, their value. High street furniture giants such as M&S and John Lewis are all jumping on the vintage bandwagon and commissioning retro inspired chair and sofa ranges from the likes of G Plan and Parker Knoll. These are impressive ‘off the peg’ pieces but come with a hefty pricetag. Compare that to the fun of finding an original vintage piece for a fraction of the price. It may need some TLC, but sourcing the perfect fabric with the help of an experienced upholsterer, is much more satisfying. But, at the end of the day.... just buy what you like!

Leeds Artists Reflect on the Easter Journey A number of artists are working with St Edmund’s Church, Roundhay to present an exhibition of reflections on the Easter journey.
hilst living in Leeds in 1969/70, he worked as a door-to-door salesman and took a series of photographs depicting life in the city’s streets. Some of the photographs were published in the Swiss magazine ‘Femina’, and a number were exhibited at ‘Project Space Leeds’ in 2008. He will be speaking about both his Leeds photos and his more recent work for the first time. “Growing up in Leeds myself in the 1960s and 70s, I find these photos fascinating”, said LPS Vice President Ian Wray. “The photos really remind me of life at that time. The subjects were probably somewhat bemused by this foreign guy wanting to take photos of their everyday lives. As an outsider, Eric obviously saw something special and worth recording in these scenes of our city’s suburbs.”

The Stations of the Cross will feature work by fourteen local artists, each focusing on a different stage of Jesus’ path to the cross. The show will include sculpture, painting, video, installation and drawing, and hopes to open up some fresh insights on a familiar narrative. The featured artists come from a range of Christian traditions, as well as other faiths and no religious faith. “Art provokes thought”, said artist and illustrator Si Smith, who is also the exhibition curator. “Our aim is to stimulate thought and discussion about the significance of the Easter story today, rather than seeking to provide pat answers. The recent fuss surrounding Stephen Fry’s comments about God remind us that Christian tradition has never hidden from the issue of suffering. The Stations of the Cross exhibition will help people to reflect on how we make sense of that.” The Exhibition will run from 26th April – 20th May at St Edmund’s Church, Lidgett Park Road, Roundhay LS8 1JN

The grant will fund the school’s 2015 theatre programme, ‘Connections’, which will take place at the Riley Theatre, Chapeltown Road, between March and November this year. The programme will focus on professional development for dancers and aims to support and engage dance artists who are based in, or have a connection to, the North of England.
The programme consists of three strands - Northern Connections, which will see six emergent artists develop and showcase their work; National Connections, which will see established dance makers perform their work in Leeds; and European Connections, which will present the work of international artists. NSCD played a central role in the recent campaign to recognise Leeds as a City of Dance. Connections
will enable the school to continue operating as a cultural hub in the North and will reinforce the organisation’s commitment to contemporary dance talent in the city. Leeds Beckett University, Spin Arts Management and Yorkshire Dance will all act as artistic consultants on the programme. “We’re ecstatic that we’re able to go ahead with Connections”, said Gianluca Vincentini, Head of Professional Development. “The programme will provide increased access to inspirational performance for artists in the North, which in turn will help to retain talent in the region and support a robust dance industry.” The first mixed bill performance of Northern Connections takes place on Friday 24th April at the Riley Theatre, followed by National Connections in mid-May. A new temporary exhibition from The Wellcome Collection, featuring 24 textile artworks by Georgie Meadows, is at Thackray Medical Museum until 24th July.
he exhibition explores personal experiences of ageing and dementia through stitched drawings. Meadows crafts uniquely affecting and compassionate portraits of people she knows or has cared for into delicate pieces whose tangled threads are both a metaphor for the scrambling of neural connections during degenerative illness and a tender and tactile form of portraiture. The works present a collision of tightly knotted threads and loose stuffing, of softness and jagged edges.
“The works are very striking and really encourage the viewer to think about the stories surrounding them”, said Lauren Ryall-Stockton, Curator, Thackray Medical Museum. “I feel they will be a wonderful contrast to the permanent galleries here at the museum, exploring perceptions of ageing.” Short stories that accompany the pictures outline the daily challenges and triumphs of her sitters: a woman finds people assume her to be grumpy since

Leeds Art Gallery is currently showing ‘One Day, Something Happens: Paintings of People’, a new Arts Council Collection touring exhibition curated by Jennifer Higgie, writer and co-editor of Frieze magazine. he exhibition reflects a personal view of a period of radical change in art, capturing snapshots of life, past and present. The paintings also convey historical influences and the theatricality of painting. By choosing work by the well known and not so well known, the exhibition uses the Arts Council and Leeds Collections to tell a wider story of British figurative painting over the past century.
“Spending time immersed in this extraordinary group of over 2,000 paintings has been a joy”, said Jennifer. “These wonderful paintings of people also offer a decidedly idiosyncratic snapshot of over a hundred years of life in Britain.” The exhibition includes a selection of 20th century paintings by acclaimed artists such as Walter Sickert, Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Richard Hamilton; as well as featuring more recent acquisitions from the Arts Council Collection with paintings by Michael Fullerton, Rose Wylie and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. Opera North and The Wrong Crowd collaborate for the first time to present a new touring production of Jonathan Dove’s family chamber opera ‘Swanhunter’ at Howard Assembly Room from Thursday 16th – Saturday 18th April
Leeds Lieder Day of Song Leeds Lieder presents a one-day mini-festival exploring floriculture in song on Saturday 25th April, 9.45am – 9.30pm at Leeds College of Music. The distinguished line-up features soprano Carolyn Sampson and pianist Joseph Middleton (who was recently appointed director of Leeds Lieder), together with BBC New Generation Artist, Benjamin Appl (baritone) and pianist Jonathan Fisher. The programme will include songs by Schumann, Strauss, Fauré, Debussy, Hahn, Britten and Quilter. The festival will also feature a recital by emerging young singers, Heather Lowe and Philip Wilcox; a lecture by Schubert scholar, Paul Reid; a master class led by Carolyn Sampson and Joseph Middleton, with song duos selected from the UK’s

darkly magical folk story, written by the composer and librettist of Opera North’s hugely successful ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio’, ‘Swanhunter’ is a celebration of the power of song, designed specifically for a family audience – for adults just as much as for children. It is brought to life through the inventive fusion of opera, puppetry and live action, directed by Hannah Mulder with design and puppet direction by Rachael Canning. Lemminkäinen is determined to travel to the icy north in search of a bride, against his mother’s wishes. There, impossible tasks await him: he must face the Devil’s Elk, the Swan on Death’s River – and in the shadows, an unseen danger lurks. A cast of six singers, including mezzo soprano Ann Taylor as Mother and tenor Adrian Dwyer
as Lemminkäinen, perform with a six piece band conducted by Justin Doyle, in Dove’s Nordic folkinspired score for horn, percussion, accordion, harp, violin and double bass. This new production continues to build on Opera North’s commitment to developing new work for young people. It is the company’s first co-production with The Wrong Crowd, who have established themselves as exciting new creators of inventive, playful and compelling theatre. Their previous shows include ‘The Girl with the Iron Claws’ and ‘HAG’.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden are opening up their beautiful eighteenth century folly buildings to some of the country’s most inventive theatre set designers, directors and artists, from Saturday 25th April – Sunday 29th November.

T h e o r i g i n a l designers of the Studley Royal Water Garden (the Aislabie family) created many follies to surprise and delight their guests. These whimsical structures were often used by garden designers to draw attention to a carefully created vista. Visitors to the Octagon Tower, Temple of Fame, Banqueting House and Temple of Piety will be amazed by installations created by current artists in response to the opulent past of this unique place. Twelve artists presented ideas and three were chosen – theatre designer Gary McCann, art director, curator and designer Simon Costin, and artist, curator and academic Irene Brown. The results are guaranteed to intrigue and surprise. “The installations inside the follies will capture everyone’s imagination”, said Alexa Morton, Visitor Experience & Marketing Manager. “We’re really excited by the works the artists have proposed. We know that visitors will be astonished!” ‘Folly!’ is part of Trust New Art. The National Trust has been working with living artists since the 1980s, and in 2009 created Trust New Art in partnership with Arts Council England. The programme makes contemporary arts available in National Trust properties, builds new audiences, and offers opportunities to artists to work in new contexts.

On 8th March 1990, West Yorkshire Playhouse threw open its doors. Since then more than four million people have seen a show on one of its stages; 322 productions have been staged; and a far-reaching programme of education and outreach work has been created and delivered across the city. wenty five years on the Playhouse is a vital cultural hub, a creative force driven by the city’s desire to see original drama in Leeds. Artistic Director James Brining continues to challenge with a diverse programme of theatre that reflects society today. Reworking classic texts for the 21st century such as the awardwinning contemporary production of ‘Sweeney Todd’ set in Thatcher’s Britain and his inventive take on Bennett’s ‘Enjoy’, sit in tandem with new initiatives like ‘A Play, A Pie and A Pint’ and new plays which inspire and excite, such as Maxine Peake’s critically acclaimed ‘Beryl’ and Zodwa Nyoni’s ‘Boi Boi is Dead’. The Playhouse continues to partner innovative and exciting organisations. On-going relationships with The Royal Exchange Theatre, Kneehigh, Headlong, Birmingham Rep, and new associations with companies such as The Egg in Bath and Tiata Fahodzi allow the Playhouse’s work to be seen outside Yorkshire, widening the reach of its productions. “Moving the Playhouse from the intellectual grounds of Leeds University right into the

Roundhay Artists’ Open Studios Trail Roundhay artists are busily choosing the work that they will have on show for this year’s Open Studios. This year’s event is on Sunday 26th April, 11am – 5.30pm, and, if last year is anything to go by, it promises to be another huge success. hat a great way to discover the huge variety of artists that are tucked away around Roundhay! This year there are 32 artists to visit, working in a range of media, including painting, illustration, ceramics, felt making, woodturning, portraiture, sculpture, glass, jewellery, textiles, photography and mixed media. You are in for a treat! Once again the organisers have produced a leaflet with a brief bio and picture for each artist, and a carefully designed map highlighted the location of each studio. These are
available in shops, cafes and libraries around Oakwood and Roundhay and at Oakwood Market the week before (18th April). With almost double the number of participating artists this year, you will need to pace yourself! he Dales Festival of Food and Drink, one of the largest events on the Yorkshire Dales gastronomic calendar, returns to Leyburn in Wensleydale for three days over the May bank holiday – Saturday 2nd – Monday 4th May, 10am – 5pm. Due to the wide variety of food, farming and entertainment on offer, all with a distinctly Yorkshire flavour, the festival has been a magnet for foodies for the last 13 years. Firm favourites are the live cookery demonstrations by top regional chefs –this year including The Wensleydale
Heifer’s Craig Keenan and The Saddle Room’s BBC Master Chef finalist, Tom Morrell. The Food Hall has 80 stands featuring a wide variety of local food, from the best meats and cheeses, to preserves and traditional baking. Many small breweries are represented in the drinks’ marquee, with award-winning beers and ales on offer, along with a good selection of wines. Award-winning author Dr Gervase Phinn will be on hand to reminisce on his time as a schools’ inspector. And, the Farming for Food area offers the chance to see animals up close, along with demonstrations of traditional farming skills. All ages are catered for, with a range of rides and attractions, traditional dancing displays, and lots of live music. The Festival is staffed by 60+ willing volunteers, and supports the charity Tickets for Troops. Since its inception in 2002, it has given over £190,000 to local community initiatives - ranging from tree

You may already be familiar with the Taste café and sandwich shop on Chapeltown Road, indeed it seems many of you are, as the enduring perennial popularity of that establishment has led proprietor Gary Hendrickson to recently expand to a second premises in Oakwood. ocated at the corner of Roundhay Road and Oakwell Mount, this Taste branch occupies a bright and airy space which offers considerably more legroom than its sister shop and is tastefully decorated (no pun intended) with a cosy and welcoming vibe. The increased space is certainly required to house the wealth of delicious treats, both savoury and sweet, on offer. Due, perhaps, to the reputation Gary has built up with the Chapeltown shop, the new place has already been doing a roaring trade as a coffee shop and sandwich emporium and, due to the popularity of their extensive and ever-changing menu, they’ve recently begun opening later into the evening. Let us be clear; Taste is a good deal more than a sandwich shop! W a i t , did someone say pizzas?! It should be pointed out (indeed, shouted from the rooftops)
that Taste offers one helluva pizza menu that surely ranks among the best in town. The evening we visited I had the San Danielo pizza – a perfect combo of buffalo mozzarella, rocket and Parma ham. The topping balance was spot on and the
thin base of fresh homemade dough wasn’t overly bready but retained a light crispy crunch, really delicious! Taste has built up quite a reputation for its pizza, with people sometimes crossing town to pick it up. We also sampled their piquant and succulent baked salmon, which had been marinated in a mix of jalapenos, hot sauce and West Indian pepperpot seasoning. This was perfectly cooked and very flavoursome however, Gary’s revelation that
the dish had had its spiciness somewhat toned down for this menu, had me yearning to try the original West Indian recipe. Also impressively tasty were the slightly crispy pancakes filled with creamed mushrooms and chicken cooked with garlic, onions and parmesan. We were seriously tempted to try a bit of everything on offer but to do so would probably have taken a few days. We did however manage a few of their lovely falafels and hummus to nibble while we waited. The desserts were amazing! We opted for a delicious Forest Fruits Tart and Peach Frangipane, but could have chosen from quite an array – including brownies, muffins, Apple and Strawberry Crumble, various cakes and, wait for it…….Rocky Road Tart! I know, it shouldn’t be allowed! With two shops, two kitchens,

Restored Oakwood Clock to be Unveiled on Oakwood Day Councillor Questions Oakwood Day 2015 will take place from 12 noon to 9pm on Saturday 2nd May and will celebrate the return of the newly restored Oakwood Clock to its rightfull place at the gateway to Roundhay Park.
There will be music to ‘rock around the clock’ from local musicians he Heritage Lottery Fund, together with mammoth fundraising efforts by Roundhay and Oakwood residents and businesses, and generous donations from Marilyn and Graham Stowe, have all helped to raise the funds necessary to restore the clock to its former glory for future generations to enjoy. Oakwood Traders and Residents Association (OTRA) is organising the event, and the Lord Mayor will officially unveil the Clock at 1.30pm. There will be music to ‘rock around the clock’ from local musicians as well as local artisan and food stalls. And, you’ll be able to have your photo taken in the Oakwood clock photo-booth.
A time capsule containing contributions from local schools and residents will be buried at the base of the Oakwood Clock by Roger Williams, the first chair of OTRA, and this will not to be reopened until 2112. Engraved paving slabs bought by local residents will also be unveiled, and you will be able to leave your memories of the clock and the day in a special visitors’ book. There will also be a wide variety of children’s activities; an open air cinema ‘experience’ in the evening; and Preston Bar will supply a bar. Tropical World Price Rises Cl l r Da n Co h e n h a s expressed his concern over the price rises at Tropical World, where admission prices will rise by up to 42%. The charge for adult admission will go up from £3.50 to £5; LeedsCard holders will now pay £3 instead of £2.80; ‘Extra’ and Breezecard holders will both see prices rise form £1.75 to £2; and 5 -15 year olds will now pay £2.50 instead of £2.35. Admission for the under-5s remains free. “It’s a real shame that the Council has decided to raise the admission prices to one of the city’s most popular attractions”, said Dan. “I accept that a lot of money has been spent refurbishing Tropical World, but a large part of that was thanks to a generous donation from the Ziff family. So I find it difficult to understand why the prices are rising now. I urge the Council to reconsider these increases which will only price many people out of a hugely popular venue.”

New RSPCA Centre for Leeds and Wakefield he RSPCA Leeds, Wakefield & District Branch is building a new Animal Rehabilitation & Rehoming Centre for the area. The branch currently rehomes around 300 animals a year, but this number is likely to increase with the new centre and its purpose built facilities. The centre, based in East Ardsley, will have kennels, cat pens and an isolation block, to care for animals in need. It will be vital to the local area, as West Yorkshire has one of the highest rates of animal cruelty in England and Wales. The new site will include a visitor information centre and indoor and outdoor exercise areas for dog training. ‘We’re really looking forward to this centre becoming

Their Plant Sale is on Saturday 16th May, 9.3011.30am he Friends of The Hollies, the small formal park with 30 acres of unspoilt woodland just off Weetwood Lane, and bordering the Meanwood Valley Trail, were recently awarded a World War One memorial park bench, thanks to the efforts of local councillor Sue Bentley. This is most appropriate as the Hollies House, gardens and parkland were originally given to Leeds City Council in 1921 by George Brown to commemorate the death in action of his only son, Major Harold Brown, in 1918.
The Friends group was established some four years ago with the aim of helping to maintain and improve the park. Last year they raised nearly a thousand pounds at their Plant Sale, allowing them to buy shrubs, plants and bulbs for the enjoyment of everyone visiting The Hollies.
This year they are holding their Plant Sale on Saturday 16th May, 9.30-11.30am, where you can purchase plants from the Hollies Collections, a great selection of interesting and unusual shrubs, and some really good value bedding plants. The group holds open gardening sessions on the second Saturday of each month. Meet at 10am in The Hollies car park off Weetwood Lane, and enjoy some fresh air and exercise while you learn about the plants. Refreshments and homemade cakes follow at midday.

Scott Wainwright – Strangers Here
I’ll begin, if I may, with a shout out of acknowledgement to North Leeds Life favourite, Tim Loud for introducing me to yet another estimable local folk-blues artist by way of this really quite excellent album. s I’ve said before, it sometimes seems as if one can barely move in this town for acoustic folk/blues/Americana performers. And, while the prodigious and prolific talent on display shows Leeds to possess an embarrassment of riches in this field, in such a crowded scene one must present outstanding chops or something stylistically unique to truly distinguish themselves. Luckily, Scott Wainwright displays both on this album of weather-beaten, road-worn blues played with guts and true grit. While often adhering to the tried and tested blues template, ‘Strangers Here’ is also an album of contrasts and contradictions that continues to offer up surprises. Opening with an instrumental (one of a handful scattered throughout the set) ‘America She speaks to Me’ is shrewdly composed with a fingerpicking style which recalls Bert Jansch and an expansive, pastoral mood whose tinges of eerie foreboding are assuaged by buoyant slide guitar. This is followed by ‘Everyone’s Telling Me I’ve Got It Wrong’, a harmonica-heavy blues stomp in the Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee vein, it offers the listener
their first taste of Wainwright’s captivating vocal. ‘Speed Metal Rag’, another instrumental, sees picked and slide guitar lines skittering over an agitated, insistent, pulsating bassline and is reminiscent of John Fahey. Things take an unexpected turn with the hip-hop infused ‘Down
the Line’ featuring some great harmonica/beatboxing interplay and recalls the likes of Son of Dave or Alabama 3, the tune displays not only Wainwright’s versatility but also his wry sense of humour. Considering the album spans twelve tracks, it’s surprisingly free of filler and never does it seem to drag or lose momentum. Wainwright’s distinctive guitar style lends an evocative, lyrical quality to his instrumental pieces and with his songs his voice asserts an authoritative presence even when nestled in the mix or barely rising above a growly whisper. ‘Strangers Here’ is a genuinely impressive album which exhibits keen musical prowess and a wealth of expansive and diverse songwriting ideas. The set contains a number of tunes that really work their way under your skin and marks Scott Wainwright out as an artist well worth keeping an eye on. “And Wash, I know Leeds is very proud of you!” – that was Julianne Moore’s shoutout to Wash Westmoreland during her BAFTA acceptance speech as she thanked Westmoreland and co director Richard Glatzer for making ‘such a beautiful movie about our essential self’. ‘Still Alice’ features an incredible, award winning performance by Julianne Moore as a linguistics professor diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease fighting to retain her sense of self and identity as her memory and cognitive function ebb away. The exemplary work by the film’s directors and star represents an impressive achievement for, while the story covers difficult territory and is undoubtedly heart breaking, it also manages to sustain a degree of positivity and optimism. In lesser hands the film could easily have become emotionally manipulative or even exploitative. ‘Still Alice’ is a remarkably powerful and moving film. I would urge all those who may have misgivings due to the perhaps upsetting subject, to put these aside and appreciate the delicate, sensitive handling by Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer of issues that may come to affect many of us. Leeds-born Wash grew up in Moortown and went on to study in Newcastle before emigrating to America in the early 1990s. He returned recently for a Q&A at Hyde Park Picture House before a special preview screening of the film. Glatzer, who is married to Wash, was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease shortly after work began on the film. Seriously ill, he was hospitalised before
the Oscars and they watched the ceremony from his hospital room. “Still Alice is a beautiful film, about a hugely affecting topic”, said Wendy Cook, General Manager at Hyde Park Picture House. “It was a great honour for us to welcome Wash back to Leeds, and celebrate this extraordinary film that he and Richard worked so hard to bring to the screen.”

IT FOLLOWS DIRECTED BY: DAVID ROBERT MITCHELL STARRING: :MAIKA MONROE, KEIR GILCHRIST, OLIVIA LUCCARDI CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 100 MINS his striking feature from writer/director David Robert Mitchell has been lauded (along with The Babadook) as being one of the best horror movies of recent years and derives its potency from the fact that, for much of its running time, it doesn’t behave like a horror movie. In fact, it often looks and feels more like a nostalgic coming of age picture. Eschewing cheap shocks, jump scares and gore, It Follows is a carefully paced and controlled piece permeated with a creeping, insidious sense of dread. Mitchell wastes no time in setting the tense mood with a high impact opening scene (somewhat reminiscent of that of Jaws) wherein a teenage girl bursts forth from her house into the quiet suburban street apparently chased by some unseen pursuer. Panicked and distressed she continues to flee until, from a deserted beach, she phones her loved ones before meeting a grisly end. So, now you’re suitably rattled and unnerved, the film moves to innocuous, standard teen movie territory with central character, Jay and her friend discussing Jay’s imminent date with a guy she’s pretty into. On the date itself, said guy seem inexplicably cagey and anxious, so much so that he insists they bail from the cinema before the movie has begun. Nevertheless, they manage to salvage the date
sufficiently to get it on in his car and it’s shortly thereafter that things decidedly take a turn for the worse. It is explained to Jay that the guy she just previously had thought

old adage offered in times of breakup, that “the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else” seems particularly apt here). However, should the demon catch up with and dispatch the new ’carrier’ before being passed on, it will revert back to its previous target, and on down the line. It Follows takes this deceptively simple idea and runs with it (or, rather, walks at a steady, determined pace with it) while cleverly riffing on the genre’s conventions. As was ever the case in teen slasher pics such as Halloween and Friday the 13th and explicitly laid out in Wes Craven’s knowing, post-modern Scream, when a killer stalks a group of nubile youngsters, the wages of sexy sin is gruesome death and it is often the virgin, alone, who escapes with her life. Yes, Hollywood has been perpetrating a blood-soaked form of slutshaming for decades. So, in this case, for the only means of survival to be more sex, it’s a canny subversion. The film brilliantly pulls off the trick of sustaining a persistent tone of tension throughout and constantly tweaking the level of intensity. Many of the most chilling moments happen
in open spaces in broad daylight and even in quiet scenes where little is happening, the audience remains aware that Jay’s fate is still out there somewhere, edging ever closer. It really is creepy as hell. As I’ve said, It Follows seems leagues apart from your run of the mill horror fare and wears its indie sensibilities unashamedly with its measured pacing, nuanced editing and the solid, low key performances by the young and mostly unknown cast. It also presents a stylistically bold vision with excellent cinematography that captures both the foreboding gloom of encroaching twilight and the soft focus, sunny day haze that brings to mind Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides. The original music by Rich Vreeland retro-tinged electronica, all brooding, rumbling synths is also brilliantly effective. Much like the dark force at its centre, It Follows is a film that creeps up on you and stays with you long after viewing. I hope it reaches the wide audience it deserves and I’ve no doubt it’s well on its way to becoming a modern horror classic.

The Windermere Row is St Gemma’s Hospice’s longest running event and each year, hundreds of supporters descend upon Lake Windermere to take on the challenge of a 10 or 21 miles row across the lake.

Teams can be made up of between two and eight rowers, with the 10 mile row taking participants from Ambleside to Bowness and back, and the 21 mile route from Ambleside to Fellfoot via Bowness and back. Women’s Health Matters Researchers at University of Leeds Seek the Views of Leeds women Looking after our health should be a priority, but when little problems occur most of us choose to deal with them ourselves. Leaking urine is surprisingly common, although it mostly affects women. As many as one in four women may have some leakage – that’s over 95,000 women in Leeds alone. It’s not just an issue for older women either; it can happen at any age. Although the physical effects are often minimal, it can be embarrassing and isolating. Amy Hunter at the School of Healthcare, University of Leeds, is part of a team that is researching women’s attitudes to urine leakage. “We want to give women the opportunity to voice their opinions about how this affects their lives”, said Amy. “Because leakage is a taboo subject, often women don’t want to talk about it, but I would encourage any woman experiencing urine leakage, however infrequent, however much, to take part in the study. You may not think you have anything to contribute, but you could make all the difference. Diver Matty Lee is Young Sportsman of the Year! Diver Matty Lee, a student at Notre Dame Sixth Form College, was recently awarded the Young Sportsman of the Year title at the 2015 Leeds Sports Awards. The awards, now in their twelfth year, are organised by Sports Leeds, a city wide network that exists to bring together all the agencies that are responsible for providing and developing opportunities in sport. Matty was one of three nominees for the ‘Young Sportsman’ trophy. He trains at the City of Leeds Diving
Club and 2014 was his most successful year to date. His achievements included two junior golds, a junior silver and a senior bronze medal at the GB National Cup. He was subsequently chosen for the GB senior team in the FINA Diving World Series. However, later in the year he had to pull out of the Commonwealth Games due to an elbow injury. He is currently studying for a BTEC Qualification in Sport. “It can be hard to balance the amount of training I do with my schoolwork”, said Matty, who trains six days

A local triathlon race was voted the best in the

country at a recent national awards ceremony. The Ilkley Triathlon, held every September at the Lido in Ilkley, was awarded ‘Event of the Year’ at the Triathlon Show at Sandown Park in London.
“The event, which is organised by Leeds & Bradford Triathlon club, won the award in the ‘less than 500 entrants category’ after a public vote. Matt Field, David Heels and Tom Langdon from the race organising committee were on hand to receive the award. It capped a very successful night for the club, which was also voted ‘Best Club in the Country’!

They will soon be playing cricket late into the night at Headingley Cricket Ground, home of The Yorkshire County Cricket Club, thanks to four 56-metre floodlights situated in the four corners of the ground. The floodlights, a very special Yorkshire design developed by lighting company Abacus Limited, have been created with a uniquely designed head frame. Each head frame is shaped to resemble the Yorkshire White Rose, an image that is synonymous across the county and a first in the world for any sporting floodlights. “The design process started in March 2014”, said David Ryder, Operations Director at Yorkshire County Cricket Club. “We didn’t think such an intricate and uniquely shaped head frame would be possible, but Abacus took it on.” Each head frame is made up of 15 separate components. Once assembled, each floodlight will stand at 11 metres, attached to the 45 metre masts. Different lighting beams will be used on each head frame, to ensure the light will only reach areas that are required and not reflect out towards residential and commercial areas surrounding the stadium. The first scheduled match under the new lights will be Yorkshire Vikings opening NatWest T20 Blast match against Derbyshire Falcons on Friday 15th May starting at 7pm. This is the story of a poet who revisits his childhood on learning that he is going to have a baby. For Nick Makoha, superheroes such as Superman, Spider-Man and Luke Skywalker had inadvertently provided the blueprints of how to be a good dad in the absence of his real father. In a highly physical piece, Nick illustrates his personal journey from being smuggled out
of his home country of Uganda at a young age, to life in the UK, Saudi Arabia and Kenya, learning what it takes to truly become a hero. As a special treat, audiences will receive a free graphic novel version of the show, created by former Marvel Comics and DC Comics illustrator Mike Collins, who worked on X-Men, Captain America, Batman, Spider-Man and the Doctor Who graphic novels. “I’m a huge fan of comic books – for me, they’re modern folklore”, said Nick. “There are four main heroes in the play and each one represents something different to
me. The show represents my own childhood, very little has been tweaked. In many ways it’s a gift to my daughter - she’s the source of the story so it’s something to show her how much she means to me.” Born in Uganda, Nick fled the country with his mother, leaving behind a vicious civil war during the Idi Amin dictatorship. Having lived in Kenya and Saudi Arabia, he currently resides in London. He has presented his work at numerous international events and toured for the British Council in Finland, Czech Republic, the US and the Netherlands. He has been widely published in journals and anthologies. Most recently he was runner-up in the 2014 Brunel University African Poetry Prize, an international competition chaired by Bernadine Evaristo MBE. The science and wonder of light will be revealed as part of a fascinating exhibition at Leeds City Museum from 3rd April – 21st June. ‘Light Lab’ will allow visitors to explore how we have made and used light across the centuries. A number of questions will be answered including ‘How does light travel?’, and ‘What happens when you mix different coloured light?’. And, visitors will be able to carrying out their own lightbased experiments to find the answers. To guide you through the history of light, a range of objects and treasures from the Leeds Museums and Galleries collection will be on display – from beautiful paintings of gas-lit Leeds by John Atkinson Grimshaw, to a Bronze Age lamp from Jericho and Javanese shadow puppets. Take the opportunity to turn your face upside down in a human kaleidoscope, try your hand at performing your own shadow puppet show and see how you can twist and turn your reflection on the mirror wall. Among the themes to be featured will be ‘Lighting the Home’, ‘Light in Nature’, Light in Science and Entertainment’ and ‘The Meaning and Symbolism of Light’. Held to coincide with the 2015 UNESCO International Year of Light, this exhibition, which covers both the Easter and May half-term holidays, will include a family trail, a number of hands-on interactives and an exciting programme of free events that is perfect for people of all ages. Lord of the Flies at Allerton Grange In February, students from Years 7-9 performed in an adaptation of William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’. Auditions were held in October and from then on the students were straight into a rigorous rehearsal schedule involving a mix of vocal, physical and movement work.
his project was made possible through a collaboration with two students from Leeds University, Job Kabamba and Jordan Wright, currently in their second year of a BA Theatre and Performance Degree. They directed the play and the Allerton Grange students benefitted greatly from their involvement as they brought a new energy and new ideas to the Allerton Grange stage. According to Job and Jordan, the final show was “a combination of discipline, dedication and perseverance. For these students to come to terms with such an intricate dystopian novel at such a young age, makes us wonder about what is yet to come”. “The show really was a success and the boys should be
extremely proud of what they achieved”, said Mrs Rachel Jarman, Head of Drama. “Through a mix of music, physical movement, projection and ensemble work the cast was able to capture the thoughts, dreams and nightmares of the characters on the Island, bringing their story to life, and captivating the audience.”
Gledhow Primary Raises Awareness of Dangers of Smoking Pupils from Gledhow Primary School recently helped Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust’s Stop Smoking Service to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking through a poster competition that encouraged people to access the service and get help to stop smoking. “It’s important to have the opportunity to engage with young people about the effects smoking can have on them and people around them”, said Stop Smoking Advisor, Maree Diamond. “We hope that by giving them the facts now, it will prevent them from smoking in the future and they will share the information we have given them with their family and friends to discourage them from smoking or to be aware of the treatment and help that is available.” Research shows that you are far more likely to be successful in stopping smoking if you combine both treatment and specialist help from an NHS Stop Smoking Service than attempting to quit on your own. stopsmokingleeds@nhs.net

Pupils at Richmond House School marked Safer Internet Day by taking part in various themed activities on how to stay safe whilst exploring the Internet. These included an assembly by Year 6 pupils, a poster design competition and performances highlighting the risks of the internet.
