City code states that you can take your dog in to an Open Space area, and, unless it is marked otherwise, your dog can be off leash as long as you have control. Control in a natural setting is not as easy as in your yard at home. There are sights, sounds, and particularly smells not experienced in your backyard that will distract your dog and can make control difficult. It’s best to start out your visits to the Open Space with your pet on a leash as they get used to this new sensory experience. Control means that you maintain control over your dog with sight and sound. You can see where your dog is at all times and that the dog will respond in a positive manner upon hearing your call.

While it is legal to have your dog off leash in the Open Space, it is not always in the best interest of the dog to be off leash. Tall grasses can hide snakes, ticks, holes or other dangers. During the time when wildlife species have given birth they will be very protective of their babies and will aggressively defend their home against exploring dogs. Farm ponds with water can hide dangers such as metal and glass that can injure your dog.
