Do you enjoy working outdoors?

Do you like working with various kinds of tools and machinery? Do you get satisfaction from building something with your own hands?

What comes to mind when you think of construction? Giant cranes and cement trucks? Those are only small pieces of the vast world of construction! Careers in this field usually involve skilled trades that can be trained on the job and do not require a degree. These positions can range from plumbing and electrical work to solar installation and cabinetmaking. If you find yourself interested in project planning or design, you might consider architecture or project management, which are careers that do require a college education and a degree. If you enjoy hands-on activities and problem solving this may be the field for you.

Education & Training

If you like the idea of having a positive impact on the future of others, consider a career in education and training. Having strong leaders to work in this field is vital to the success of our children and community as a whole! To teach Pre-k through 12th grades in Florida, you must complete an approved teacher education program which does require a bachelor’s degree. To teach at the university level usually requires a Ph.D. If you like the idea of education but the classroom isn’t the place for you, other careers include librarian, guidance counselor, or bus driver.

Do you consider yourself a leader or role model to those around you?

Are you passionate about a subject you think others should know?

Do you want to shape and change the lives of others?

Energy & Utilities

Do you enjoy working with your hands?

Do you enjoy doing work knowing it will help people around you?

Without energy and utility professionals, we would be in a very dark place.... literally! Crucial to our everyday lives, this world provides us with electricity to power our homes and businesses, clean water, and let’s not forget cellular and internet services. If working in an office isn’t for you, consider becoming a power line installer and repairer or a telecommunication equipment installer, mostly spent working outside. These careers only require a high school degree, as do power plant operators and water treatment plant operators. Some energy and utilities careers do require up to a bachelor’s, such as occupational health and safety specialists.

Engineering & Environmental Science

Do you excel in math and science?

Do you like to design or draw?

Engineers design the world around us, and work side-by-side with environmental scientists to make sure it is being done in the most safe and effective way possible. Science and engineering careers are some of the most highly educated roles, that usually require at least a bachelor’s degree, and professional engineers must have a state license to practice. There are some positions that do not require a degree though, such as survey and map technician or architectural drafter. There are many types of engineering such as mechanical, civil, chemical, and industrial, that are working to design and plan things before a hammer even touches a nail! Working as an engineer or environmental scientist you could find yourself in a laboratory, an industrial facility, a weather station, or even a deep ocean.

Healthcare work can be in a laboratory, nursing home, pharmacy, or places you might not expect, like an athletic field! There are many paths that don’t require a higher degree than a high school diploma or GED, although you typically still need some training and a certification, such as phlebotomist, pharmacy technician, paramedic, or dental hygienist.
