Arctic experiences in The Narvik Region

Welcome to Narvik – the region of contrasts Welcome to the city between the steep mountains and the beautiful fjords. We are a region of contrasts and we are humbled over the fantastic nature and scenery we are surrounded by. We hope that you are ready to experience our great winter and northern light excursions this winter.

The land of Northern Lights Hålogaland is the historic name of the Northern-Norway and originated from the Old-Norse Hálogaland. The German celtologist, Kasper Zeuss, noted in 1837 that the word could be the old Old-Norse logi, meaning “fire”. Hálogaland became land des Hálogi, in other words “The Land of the Northern Lights”. Narvik is located in the center of Hålogaland – or The Land of the Northern Lights” – and is the perfect gateway for experiencing this spectacular natural phenomenon.

Why is the Narvik region perfect for Northern Lights and winter experiences • The region is located between the Norwegian coast and the mountains which boarder to Sweden and the Swedish Lappland. This makes it the perfect place to hunt the Northern Lights. • The weather changes very quickly in the north of Norway, and because of our great location between the coast and the Swedish Lappland we have very good opportunities to find clear skies in search of the Northern Lights. • It is easy to travel to the Narvik region by air, train and car. • The region offer a varied landscape with many great locations to experience the Northern Lights. • The Narvik region is surrounded by fantastic and easy accessible nature. The region has good facilities for accommodations, a diversity of restaurants, and we have a local and authentic history.

Everyday life in Narvik is brought to you through the exhibitions, and you will see how Narvik has changed as a town during its history. This year the museum also features an exhibition about Sami people in the Ofoten region. Tripadvisor

“Awesome & Unforgettable” Reviewed February 18, 2016 Thoroughly enjoyed this trip to see the Northern Lights. An amazing sleigh ride up the mountain to the Lavvu and its open fire. Cooked sausages, ate Moose meat and drank Hot Chocolate. Lars was a fantastic & very knowledgeable host and the company of his dog made it even more memorable. Highly recommended!

Magical Northern Lights hunting with the Njalasouka Adventures Joint the hunt for the Northern Lights in the mountains of Narvik. A sleigh ride to the Njalasouka Lavvu high up in the mountains where there is no artificial light, only an amazing mountain landscape which gives a dramatic effect to your Aurora Borealis pictures. Take the trip and enjoy a comfortable sleigh ride, while the snowmobile is taking you high up in the mountains, in an exciting landscaped filled with contrasts. You will now get the opportunity to lie outside on reindeer pelts while watching the starry sky. The Polar Night in the Arctic areas is magic in its own way, but the Northern Lights can be unpredictable and you could wait for hours for it to appear. Thus – a cup of coffee and snack around the bonfire in the lavvu will be extra tasty. We cannot guarantee Aurora Borealis, but we can guarantee an unforgettable experience with Njalasouka Adventures! Moose Safari Salangen municipality lies between the inland and the coast in the northern part of Norway. This means that we, from December through to April, can experience moose from close range, as these large and majestic animals migrate (individually, as families or in larger flocks) towards their winter-feeding areas on the coast. We observe the moose from a warm vehicle however; at some locations, it may well be possible to leave the vehicle to observe the moose, with nothing between you and the animal. We will of course have your safety in mind and conduct these sessions with focus on avoiding disturbing the moose as this would be unfortunate for the animal. We`ll serve warm drinks and cookies. “The Winter Festival in Narvik”: VINTERFESTUKA Once a year, a city in northern Norway bursts into life just as the sun once again conquers the dark arctic winter. For ten days, in a city that doesn’t sleep, everyone is thrown into a joyous cultural festival, filled with concerts, dance, theatre, art, exhibitions and street animation. Visiting Narvik during Vinterfestuka is like a time travel back to the end of the 19th century, when the world’s most northerly railway was built. Under the northern light, the midnight sun and during winter storms – the Navvies relentlessly shaped a railway line through the Arctic mountains. Honoring these achievments everyone, young and old, dresses up in historic clothes. Women wear long dresses and men wear navvy hats and scarves. The people of Narvik really put their heart and soul into this festival, exuding warmth, joy and hospitality.

No wonder visitors are baffled, even speechless at times. Having experienced Vinterfestuka once, visitors tend to come back year after year.
