Winter has become the new summer. It is not for nothing that research into the Northern Lights is based in Andenes. Along with activities ØKSNES connected with the Northern Lights, there is a varied winter programme on offer in Vesterålen. At the same time, Vesterålen is also experiencing a growth in tourism during the summer season. Nature-based activities are much sought after with whale safaris being most popular. There are also some of the best tourist fishing facilities in the country, and our hosts take pride in personal service and a varied programme of activities. Cycle tourism in the region is growing exponentially, and Vesterålen has become an attractive cycle destination. Early May to late August in Vesterålen is paradise for birdwatchers. Eagles can be seen all over the region throughout the year.

Vesterålen is made up of many islands that are ideal for boating, kayaking and diving. Vesterålen is also famous for spectacular hikes, including Dronningruta (The Queen’s Route) between Stø and Nyksund and the trip to Møysalen, the highest mountain in the region. Travelling to Vesterålen is now easier as Norwegian has a direct flight between Oslo and Andenes. Widerøe also has flights to Stokmarknes and Andenes from Bodø and Tromsø. The airport bus at the airport in Evenes serves all SAS and Norwegian departures. Many people also travel on the Hurtigruten Coastal Express which makes three stops in Vesterålen. There is room for everyone in Vesterålen. Parking is free in towns and villages, and there are no queues or toll booths. There is always something new around every corner and over the next bridge HADSEL crossing to another island here in the Vesterålen archipelago. White beaches, perfectly sculptured mountain tops and endless sea views take your breath away. Small museums and galleries celebrate the fishing and fisheries culture and heritage while newly established centres of interest concentrate on modern day industries such as aquaculture and space travel.

Andøy Andøy lies in the north of the region. On the west side of the island, along the new National Tourist Route, we find galleries, the charming village of Bleik and north Europe’s longest (2.5km) white sandy beach. Off the coast lies Bleik Island, home to an eagle colony and breeding ground to more than 80,000 puffins. The coastal path to Måtind provides for a perfect mountain walk. Andenes (admin. centre) has a number of attractions, sights and landmarks. These include the Polar Museum, the Whale Centre, the lighthouse and the space ship Aurora. Whale safaris are on offer from Andenes either in a RIB or on a much larger boat. In the summer there is a ferry service to Gryllefjord in Senja. Bø Known as the folklore borough. Bø Museum at Vinjesjøen is all about myths, folklore and story telling. You can enjoy the magical mystery trail and learn about the fascinating local history. Not far from the museum, looking out to the mouth of the fjord, stands Culture Landscape, Nordland’s statue «The Man from the Sea». Festivals and market days such as the culture festival «Reginedagan» (named after local author Regine Normann) take place every summer. Bø has wonderful cycle routes and fantastic sheltered waters for paddlers. For a real, idyllic summer experience, visit Nykvåg and Hovden and their surrounding areas. Here you’ll find pathways, white sandy beaches and a teeming bird life. Hadsel Stokmarknes, in Hadsel, is Hurtigruten’s (the Coastal Express) birthplace. Here, the old MS Finnmarken has been brought up on to dry land to be an exhibit in the official Hurtigrute Museum. On the west side of Hadsel Island heading towards Melbu, the landscape features steep mountain slopes on the right and panoramic views over to Lofoten on the left. Vesterålen Museum and the Fishing Industry Museum are located in Melbu and concerts are often arranged in one of the old herring oil tanks in the harbour. The «Summer Melbu» festival is a highlight in the region’s cultural calender. With a relatively low treeline, Hadsel Island is ideal for both experienced walkers and those who prefer just to 6

enjoy the wonderful views. A guided tour to Mt. Møysalen, selected as Norway’s finest scenic experience, is highly recommended for anyone who wishes a longer and a little more demanding mountain walk. The majestic Trollfjord, known for it’s narrow entrance and steep mountain walls, lies furthest south in the rural borough of Hadsel. Sortland Sortland, also known as «the blue town», after an idea of local artist Bjørn Elvenes, serves not only as the commercial centre for Vesterålen but also houses a number of galleries, photographic exhibitions, a brand new culture centre and a museum. Artscape Nordland’s statue «Ocean Eye» stands on the quayside, in the centre of the town. Just a few kilometers away from the centre, in Kvalsaukan, one can get a taste of local Sami culture and meet the charming reindeer «Lillebror». The aquaculture centre in Blokken focuses on fish farming and breeding. For those who prefer the mountains and fjords, there are numerous signposted pathways of varying degrees of difficulty throughout the rural borough Øksnes The fishing borough of Øksnes has much to offer families, nature lovers and culture enthusiasts alike. The historic fishing village of Nyksund has become a main attraction in the region due to it’s special architecture, relaxed atmosphere and excellent restaurants. The active fishing village of Stø is also worth a visit with attractions such as sea fishing and both bird and whale safaris. «Dronningruta» (the Queen’s Route) is a pathway that runs between the two villages. This 5 - 8 hour long round trip is considered to be one of the most picturesque and varied walks in the region, wandering up into the mountains and back down to the sea to follow the coastline. Further west in the borough lie a collection of islands known as Øksnes Vestbygd. The express boat provides a daily service between the main islands. Many choose to ’hop’ from one island to another while others simply take a round trip on the boat to really enjoy the Vesterålen archipelago. www.visitvesteralen.com

DID YOU KNOW... One of Norway’s smallest national parks is Møysalen National Park which covers just 51.2 sq.km. Vesterålen’s highest mountain, Møysalen, dominates the area rising to an impressive 1,262m above sea level. NATURE TREKS Throughout the whole district, across the mountains and fields of Vesterålen, there are over 100 well marked and signposted hiking trails. They are easily accessible, wherever you join them, with various degrees of difficulty for the novice and the seasoned walker alike. There are three marked coastal trails, each described by a separate brochure. One is located in Bø (Straumsjøen – Spjelkvågen), one in Andøya (Stave – Bleik) and the third is in Øksnes (Langenes church – Klo). There is also a touring map with several suggested trip itineraries. The map is also very suitable for use as a road map. There are also marked trails to the Norwegian Trekking Association’s cabins in Vesterålen. The local hiking association has cabins both in the mountains and along the seashore. Møysalen National Park is one of the country’s smallest national preserves, with only 51.2 km2 and is located on Hinnøya, Norway’s largest island. Towering in the centre of the national park is Møysalen, the mountain that was selected by outdoor magazine Ute as «Norway’s most beautiful natural attraction». There are guided treks to the peak, which is 1262 m above sea level. Surrounding peaks in the area rise up to 1000 m above sea level. Ask for the brochures containing route suggestions and descriptions at the local tourist information. 8

RIGHT OF ACCESS The Outdoor Recreations Act provides the right of the public to access and stay in wilderness areas. It gives us the right to passage in wooded and mountainous areas, to go skiing, sledging and to ride horseback on trails and roads. The public right of access safeguards the right to spend time and to set up tents in wilderness areas, but not closer than 150 m from houses or cabins. Wilderness is defined as all uncultivated land and comprises most lakes, shorelines, moorlands, forests and mountain areas in Norway. As users of the public right of access we also have obligations. We must behave in a cautious and considerate manner and avoid causing harm or inconveniences for owners, users, damage to the natural environment or harm to domesticated animals or wildlife. Be careful to tidy up after yourself before you leave a resting place or tent site. Take all refuse with you. You must also exercise caution when lighting fires outdoors and you must not light open fires near any forested area during the period 15 April to 15 September.

HIKING TIPS DRONNINGRUTA – The Queen’s Route

The trip can be done in 5-8 hours. Red route +++ You decide yourself where you want to start. The highest point is Finngamheia (448 mas). The route is signposted with the Hiking Association’s Ts at the starting points and along the trail. The hiking surface is mountain rock, earth, stone and peat. Parts of the route run along the shoreline. There is a steep section from both sides up to the mountain summit. Certain parts are secured with safety ropes. Experiences along this route are numerous. The trip offers not only variation in hiking terrain and splendid vistas, but the starting and stopping points are also two very special sights. Nyksund is an old, once abandoned fishing village that has been resurrected through the efforts of artist residents and the tourism industry. Stø is a small, charming and active fishing village.

Dronningruta is a marked trail about 15 km long and is a «round trip» along the shoreline and over the mountain between Nyksund and Stø in Øksnes municipality in Vesterålen. If you are in good physical shape and are used to medium altitudes, this is the trip for you. Certain portions of the trip may seem challenging in terms of heights.

CYCLING Cycling around Vesterålen opens for magic experiences for the visitor who has sufficient time to take one day at a time.

You can chart out a suitable daily route that lets you travel at your own speed and enjoy as much as possible of the region. The routes are easy to cycle, with very little hilly terrain and many stretches that are practically free of motorised traffic. In other words, the roads are suitable for bicycles with a trailer and a small amount of baggage cargo. You can stop along the way for a picnic on the shoreline or a taste of Vesterålen at one of the cafés or restaurants. If you need accommodation, you will find something to your liking, whether it is a chalet, a seaside lodge, fisherman’s cabin or hotel room. CYCLING TIPS: Round the Hadsel island, 42 km. The outward facing side of the island is narrow, winding and an easy and GORGEOUS ride. You will be able to enjoy the view of the sea. An easy route, with few and short hills, and little traffix. There is a beautiful beach (Taen) on Hadseløya. There is also a picnic area and a love bench. Don’t miss the art installation Ræk IV. Have a break at Gallery Uvær. Sortland – Bø (Hovden), 69 km. Bø has a dramatically beautiful mountain panorama and view out towards the open ocean. It comprises small local communities, pleasant sandy beaches and a lot to see. Iron age excavations, «The Man from the Sea» sculpture, churches and tourist facilities.

FLY AND BIKE Fly to Vesterålen and hire a bike for the perfect cycling holiday. Book «Fly and Bike» on Widerøes web site. It is also possible to hire bikes from other places in the region. MX Sport in Stokmarknes offer cycles for hire together with most other accessories you may need. We bid you welcome and wish you a pleasant bicycle trip through Vesterålen! Sortland – Stø, 56 km. Øksnes offers among others fishing villages (You MUST see Nyksund) and, not least of all, the bird, seal and whale safaris out of Stø. It is possible to take the speed shuttle boat in Øksnes Vestbygd, providing a varied panorama of the natural surroundings and local rural community. National cycle route no.1 Melbu - Andenes, 163 km This signposted route goes from Melbu, via the far side of Hadsel island, past Sortland and the west side of Andøya (National Tourist Route) to Andenes. This trip, with it’s wonderful views, walks and hiking possibilities, galleries and museums, the Andøya Space Centre, the adventure centre HISNAKUL, Andenes lighthouse, a nature safari and 2 whale safaris, is full of exciting and interesting attractions at every turn. PADDLING Vesterålen is a paddler’s paradise for both experts and the less experienced. You can experience beautiful fjords, idyllic skerry landscape and fascinating sea landscapes. You can watch bird and animal life at close range, with pristine and wild nature through the prism of ever-changing wind and weather conditions. All the way from Trollfjord in the south to Andenes in the north you will enjoy sensational paddling opportunities that will give you a feeling of being at one with nature, and you can enjoy this alone as an experienced paddler or as a member of a guided excursion.

NOTE: Even if you are out paddling in the middle of summer, the days can be cold and the water temperature is much colder than further south in Norway. We recommend, therefore, that you bring lots of clothes to keep you warm and dry! If you are going for a walk and are not familiar with the area, ask at the tourist information office or someone who knows the locality about recommended routes. Always check the weather forecast before going paddling!

WHALE SAFARI

the largest of the toothed whales and can live for up to 80 years. The males are found here, the females and their young live in the more temperate waters of the North and Mid-Atlantic (50°S-40°N). These whales can often be seen outside Bleik. Here the continental shelf ends and waters from different streams and currents converge resulting in a rich nutritious source which the whales willingly take advantage of. Normally, they dive to a depth of 500-700 m in their search for food. They spend about 7 mins at the surface before they dive down again for ca. 20-35 mins. The maximum time they can be under water is around 2 hours. These whales live for up to 60-70 years.

HUMPBACK (Megaptera novaeangliae) Can be up to 18 m long and weigh up to 40 tons. They are sometimes seen in groups of 3 or 4. They are able to perform acrobatic jumps out of the water and often beat the water with their long flippers. Some scientists believe this to be a form of communication. Humpbacks are also known for their «singing talents». These high-pitched sounds can continue for up to 20 minutes.

KILLER WHALE (Orcinus orca) In norwegian waters; males are ca. 7m and 4 - 5 tons. Females: 5.5m and ca. 3 tons. Their diet is quite varied and consists mostly of fish like herring and mackerel, but also cod, squid, birds, seal and even other whale types can be a part of their menu. More recently, the herrings migration patterns have changed a little and the orcas can now be seen here all year round.

MINKE WHALE (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) 7-10 m long, 10 tons in weight. One of the smallest baleen whales. The baleens filter krill, small fish (such as herring and capelin) and certain squid. They are normally seen either alone or in small groups, but larger gatherings can occur around the feeding grounds. Mating is believed to take place in the winter and the females can give birth each year, believed also to be in the winter, after a ca. 10mth pregnancy. However, acoustic data suggest they give birth in May in tropical waters.

SPERM WHALE (Physeter macrocephalus) Size: 10-18m in length, weighing 40-60 tons. The sperm whale is

They live in groups of 10-20, which is believed to be for the benefit of the females and their young, but often one sees large groups of many hundred whales with a strong social connection. DID YOU KNOW… that the puffin (Fratercula arctica ) is very tiny, size: 29-31 cm. The puffin lays one egg, maybe once in a while two, if more than enough food has been readily available. They eat small fish such as sand eel and young herring. Puffins have teeth that point backwards in their beak which allows them to catch fish one after another. They are good divers and can go to 40 m deep in their search for food. They use their wings equally as well under water as in the air.

In no other place in the world does the Gulf Stream come as close in towards the shoreline as it does in Vesterålen. Because of the warm and nutrient-rich ocean currents, Vesterålen is host during the summer to teeming bird life and practically unparalleled flora.

SEA GANNET (Morus bassanus) Size: 87-100 cm. The sea gannet is the largest seabird in the north Atlantic and has a wingspan of 2 metres. The gannets are specialists in diving. With wings folded, they swoop from a height of around 40 metres at a speed of up to 30 m/ sec, down into the water in their search for fish. They have 3 nesting areas in Vesterålen; one at Ulvøyholmen near Hadsel and 2 others in the area outside Andøya.

WHITE TAIL (Haliaeetus albicilla) Size: 69-91 cm. Adult females can have a wingspan of up to 240 cm, males somewhat smaller. Can live up to 50 years old. 2 or 3 eggs are laid in march/ may and these are cared for by both parents throughout the 35-45 day incubation period. The sea eagle feeds on fish, sea birds and dead carcasses. They have their own areas where they sit and have command of the views out over the ocean. They use the same positions through many generations.

COMMON SEAL (Phoca vitulina) Size: 1.7-1.9 m, max.130 kg (female) and 170 kg (male). A common sight along Norway’s coastline. They keep mainly to their own areas, are sociable and live in colonies. The common seal likes to keep close to the coastline where they are protected from the waves and they can lie on the rocks, beaches and reefs. They eat different types of fish such as coalfish, herring and Norway pout.

MOOSE (Alces alces) The largest of the deer family. The fur is water repellant and provides good insulation. The ox’s antlers can be up to 2 m wide. They shed them after rutting and grow new ones the following spring. The ox weighs between 200-600 kg and can be 2-3.2 m long. The cow weighs between 200-400 kg and is about 10 cm lower than the ox. The moose is a plant eater and preferably moves around alone. Is more active in the twilight and at the crack of dawn.

PUFFIN AND SEA-EAGLE SAFARI

Sea-eagle on the hunt after puffins can be observed on every trip. Experience the Island of Bleiksøya, one of the most known and approachable bird rocks in Norway. There are more then 150.000 puffins on their breeding grounds. Also other species of seabird can be observed. The trip will take 1,5 hrs. with a local guide. Midnight sun-trips will be organised if enough bookings.

FISHING AND BOATING Some of the country’s richest fishing grounds are located in Vesterålen. Traditional fishing villages are well worth a visit, whether they are old, abandoned fishing stations or newer, modern fishing ports bustling with maritime activity.

Many visitors want to come to Vesterålen precisely for the good fishing they find here. In Vesterålen we offer guided fishing outings, and many of the tourist facilities have boats for hire.

Children and adolescents younger than 16 years of age are legally entitled to a free fishing licence for inland fishing during the period 1 January to 20 August.

There are also many good spots where one can fish from the shoreline. The most common species are cod, coalfish, haddock and redfish, but it is also possible to catch salmon and sea trout or even a giant halibut.

Fishing rights in rivers and lakes are the property of the property owners, and fishing can be done only with the consent of the landowner (for example through purchase of a local fishing licence). Fishing for salmon, sea trout and Arctic char in watercourses requires an additional licensing fee paid to the Norwegian government.

COD (GADUS MORHUA) has 3 fins on its back, 2 anal fins, a barbel and a slight overbite. They can be up to 180 cm long and weigh as much as 55 kg, however those found along the coast are smaller. Cod are found only in the North Atlantic Ocean and keep to the coastal waters, the fjords and out over the sandbanks. There are 2 main types, ocean (or spawning) cod and coastal cod. Spawning cod grow up in the Barents Sea and then migrate south to spawn. Normally the fishermen fish for cod all year round with the highlight being in February - March when they go out in search of the spawning cod.

COALFISH (Pollachius virens) can be up to 120 cm long and weigh over 20 kg. The abdomen and sides are silver/grey with a darker shade along the backbone of the fish. Only the young fish have a short barbel. In the western parts of Norway, they have different names for coalfish depending on size, while in other parts, and especially the north, they just use the adjectives small, «podgy» and large. The locals in Vesterålen prefer coalfish in the summer. It is possible to catch small coalfish from the shoreline.

REDFISH (Sebastes marinus) can be up to 100 cm long and up to 15 kg in weight. They can live for up to 60 years and reach maturity when 12-15 years of age. Redfish is considered well-suited for fish dishes. It is a deep water fish, living at a depth of between 100 and 1000 meters. The female takes care of her eggs until they hatch.

HALIBUT (Hippoglossinae) A member of the flounder family. Although most halibut are deep water fish living at a depth of between 300 and 2000 m, they are sometimes found in shallow waters, much to the delight of fishing enthusiasts lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. CULTURE Experiencing the local culture and art should be one of your primary goals when you visit Vesterålen. A large number of cultural events are arranged jointly through comprehensive collaboration of the local municipalities. Volunteer organisations work to provide high-quality cultural experiences throughout the year. A large number of varied local events, festivals and cultural days are well worth experiencing. User-friendly handbooks and brochures are useful guides to the art galleries and studios, museums and interesting sights that you find spread throughout the islands. Fishing has been an important resource for generations and is also the basis for much of the culture and local identity in Vesterålen. The informational series Encounter with Vesterålen, including sight-specific handbooks and brochures, provide detailed insight into this basis.

An abundance of art projects are also worth a visit. We might mention Artscape Nordland, with some of Nordland county’s most popular and frequently visited sculptures. In the region there is also a series of artistically decorated electrical transformer sheds, and on the seaward side of Vesterålen you will discover art installations designed and built using items washed ashore by the Gulf Stream. The literary decor on Sortland’s buildings is equally interesting: more than thirty texts written by young people now adorn the walls of the Blue City by the Sea.

We are able to offer a rich and varied cultural programme here in Vesterålen which includes music, art, theatre, film and the outdoor life. Concerts are held regularly and cover many genres, from classical music to jazz. Many professional artists are based here in Vesterålen with galleries, workshops and outlets. Painters, artists specialising in glass and jewellery, there are many exhibitions to visit. There are also many theatrical plays/revues presented throughout the year.

We arrange many different festivals here. The Festival of Light, the Food Festival and the Storytellers Festival, to name but a few. There is a popular film milieu here, especially for children and youngsters, and in November we hold a film festival called Laterna Magica. A TASTE OF VESTERÅLEN Vesterålen most definitely has the resources and ingredients suitable for inclusion in a local, seasonally varied menu. Several of the dining establishments in the area have recognized the potential in using local food items from the fields and forests, the mountainsides, the moors, rivers and the open ocean. Arktisk Meny («Arctic Menu») is a union of restaurants in Northern Norway, a stamp of quality for local ingredients, of which many of the dining establishments in Vesterålen are members. Vesterålen is primarily a fish-producing region where enormous amounts of top-quality fish are caught, processed and exported. And when the distance from fishing boats and fish-farming pens to the kitchen counter is short, your dining experience is enhanced. Therefore, we invite you to the table – to enjoy fresh skrei cod with liver and roe, coalfish steak, halibut fillet, Arctic char, prawns, fried herring and whale steak. Sometimes, however, fish needs to be processed and treated in order to create the traditional, local delicacies – such as «boknafisk» (semi-dried cod), «lutefisk», freshly salted redfish, saltcured herring or cured salmon. Whatever the item, freshness and

quality are the very prerequisites for a maximally successful end product. Vesterålen Lamb – raised on pristine mountain pastures sprinkled with natural seaspray salt – has always been a hit on area menus. In recent years, however, the succulent meat of the rarer «villsauen» (feral sheep) has become increasingly popular – and not without good reason. Nonetheless, traditional game such as reindeer, elk, grouse and geese – hunted and processed in Vesterålen – remain quainter items and are very exclusive. The game is often served with local chanterelle mushrooms and with cloudberries for dessert – both of these gathered in the forests and on the moors of Vesterålen. We mustn’t forget to mention the local vegetables that are grown to a sweet flavour under the life-giving midnight sun.

WINTER IN VESTERÅLEN Although the sun does not appear over the horizon for nearly two months, winter in Vesterålen can be both colourful and exciting – with its blue, arctic light above white mountains and pink ocean water. WINTER-ACTIVITIES The mountains of Vesterålen are made for skiing – whether it be on prepared ski trails or in the virgin snow – the mountains are easy to ascend and not dangerous for off-piste skiing. If you are a dedicated telemark-, rando- or snowboard-enthusiast, you will see opportunities for rapid descents everywhere you turn in the mountains. In Vesterålen there are a number of prepared skiing trails for trekking and cross country outings. The best time to ski in Vesterålen is February – April. During this period the days have once again become long enough that light is not a factor. The temperature at this time normally also stays below freezing, so that the snow is perfect for skiing on powder slopes.

NORTHERN LIGHTS Vesterålen is the place for northern lights research! Lying directly under the northern lights oval, Vesterålen is the perfect place for observing the northern lights marvel. Both norwegian and international northern lights research is localized in Vesterålen. The Andøya Space Centre and the research station ALOMAR (Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research) are located on the northern tip of Andøya.

The northern lights are a physical phenomenon that occur when the solar winds are stronger than usual, with large electrical discharges which hurl electrically charged particles towards the earth. The particles are electrons and protons which create light when they collide with the gases in the atmosphere, between 90 and 180 km above the surface of the earth. The phenomenon can be seen in the night skies in a belt around the magnetic poles - the northern lights oval, for us in the northern hemisphere. The northern lights appear as a wave of light which varies in both form, strength and colour, from dark blue and green to yellow, red and orange. These lights in the northern hemisphere are called aurora borealis or the northern lights and in the southern hemisphere are known as aurora australis or the southern lights. If you want to learn more, a visit to the activity centre Romskipet Aurora at the Andøya Space Centre will provide you with a more informed introduction to the northern lights phenomenon.

COLOURFUL The northern lights can have many different colours. The colours reflect the gases found in the atmosphere. The yellow/green colour, most distinctive and most common in the north, comes from oxygen. The red also originates mostly from oxygen but with an added touch of nitrogen. The violet we often see around the edges of the northern lights comes from nitrogen, as does most of the blue. Photography classes are organised which 30

specialize in capturing the northern lights and «the ever changing colours» of Vesterålen.

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS AND SUPERSTITION The word ‘nordlys’ or ‘nordurljos’ first appears in ‘Kongespeilet’ (a norwegian educational text) from ca.1230 AD. Most people, through the ages, have seen the northern lights as both spectacular and frightening. In the olden days, it wasn’t unusual for northerners to interpret the flaming lights in the northern skies as a bad omen and the stronger the light, the worse things would be. One way of provoking, or poking fun at the lights was by brandishing a white cloth or sheet. However, one should never laugh at the northern lights because then you could become lame. On the other hand, some believed the lights to be a good weather condition indicator and called them ‘the weather lights’ or «the wind lights». NYKSUND... was one of the largest fishing villages in Vesterålen around the turn of the previous century. In 1900, the place had 127 permanent residents, but during the winter fishing season, the population increased by several hundred. However, the advent of larger fishing boats made the harbour unsuitably narrow, and the village was gradually depopulated. In 1973, the school was closed, and two years later, the last permanent residents moved away.

During the 1980s, the ghost town by the open ocean awakened with new life, first through an international youth project, and later as a result of active culture and tourism development. Today the village has many permanent residents who operate art galleries, overnight facilities, restaurants and cafés.

ACCOMMODATION Vesterålen can offer a good and varied choice of accommodation, which easily satisfies individual demands. There are hotels, large and small fisherman’s cabins, boat houses, cabins and camping sites catering for motor homes, caravans and tents. Alternatively, you may prefer to rent a room on a farm or in one of the private houses which provide rooms in the area.

Vesterålen Hiking Association has 4 large, comfortable cabins available where you can stay overnight. For something completely different and away from it all, you can rent a room at a lighthouse.

THE NATIONAL TOURIST ROUTE The road network on the west side of Andøya received National Tourist Route status on 30th June 2012. It stretches from the crossroads at Åknes to the quayside and ferry docking point at Andenes and is 51km long. The Andøya - Senja ferry connection is an alternative to the E6 trunk road and the Coastal Express (Hurtigruten) when travelling to and from the north. from A to B in the quickest possible time. National Tourist Routes provide for an enjoyable drive through beautiful surroundings. Each of the 18 routes in Norway have their own distinctive features, character and stories to tell. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration have responsibility for the upkeep of the road network for you the traveller. They provide spectacular viewing points of fantastic scenery, roadside services, parking areas, places to sit and relax, pathways and art displays. Daring and innovative architecture in magnificent natural surroundings is NTR’s trademark. Tourist Route investment is a long term commitment.

The National Tourist Route in Andøya runs between the open, bare outer coastline, the grass covered, pointed mountain peaks and the flat cloudberry marshes further south. Only Bleik Island’s nearly perfect cone-like form breaks the endless horizon which stretches all the way to Greenland. The beach at Bleik is Norway’s longest and fills the shoes with fine, white coral sand whilst ‘Bukkekirka’ creates a group of sculptured rocks. The houses in the fishing village of Bleik (many of them old nordland houses) are built close together while further south they are built in a line looking out on to the beach. A whale safari out to the sperm whales in Bleik’s deep waters, a bird safari to the sea gannets, arctic fulmar and the 80,000 puffins at Bleik, kayaking, a walk around the colourful small town of Andenes, a visit to the space center at Oksebåsen and rambling along the coastal pathways up to Måltinden make the route even more memorable. Andøya Rural Borough, together with the National Tourist Route, have provided a stopover area with a panoramic view at Kleivodden. Bukkekjerka has a Sami culture monument and the area is rich in local history. Yes, we still have roads today that are not just designed to get you
