Welcome to the show: THE 39TH ANNUAL CKNL TRADE SHOW

Well, here we are, one year short of 40 years of putting on this annual spring time extravaganza. And as we close out our third decade of shows, I am pleased to be able to say, I think we have an exciting and entertaining show that fulfills our mandate of trying to make the people happy by having someShow Manager thing for everybody. With more than 250 exGene Daniel hibits, displays and attractions, we cover the gauntlet, that`s for sure. As was the case last year, we are back in the Pomeroy Sport Centre, known as the Enerplex last year. The show is all under one roof… just as big if not bigger than last year. While there were some growing pains in our first year in the new building, by and large it was a very positive and rewarding outcome, so we had no hesitation coming back again making the necessary changes and tweaks for a better show. I hope you enjoy what we have to offer. If we have to pick one main attraction, it has to be the appearance of Krystal Elder and her Snap Dragons live Reptile Show. We are fortunate to be able to have someone of her stature bring this show to us in Fort St. John and I fully expect, the show on the 2nd level of the Pomeroy Sport Centre will be one of the busier places all weekend. Another attraction that

can`t be missed is the appearance of the Twin Anchors Houseboats… a first time ever for our trade shows. The cruiser on display in front of the Pomeroy Sport Center is open for a walk through, and if you go to the Twin Anchors booth by the Energy FM and the Bear FM and the door prize Draw Barrels, on the 2nd level, you might very well win the grand prize of all time…a one week vacation aboard the Cruise Craft ll, cruising in style for an unforgettable vacation experience on the Shuswap Lake this spring or summer. There are other outstanding door prizes to be won, and they are all listed below this article. Many thanks go out to the contributors of these door prizes. I am also very pleased with the schedule of activities and attractions we have lined up at the Family Fun Zone on the 2nd level. Making a first time appearance is In Zone Party’s laser tag …a 16 hundred square foot inflatable that should mesmerize the youngsters when they hit the Family Zone. Beside the laser tag, there’s the Just 4 Fun Bouncy Castle and the Blueberry Ministry Centre’s large inflatable slide. Then there’s Twisty T with her balloon animals and Betty`s Amazing Faces, facepainting to a new level. Fun for kids of all ages at the Family Fun Zone. And to round out our lineup of activities and attractions there’s The Lido Theatre/Deere John Entertainment Zone on level one and Camp Sagitawa`s Rock Climbing Wall also on the first level. Last year we initiated the Food Court on the 2nd level, and it went so well we have brought it back with a variety of five food and drink establishments and a cleanup crew comprised of Stage North volunteers. Beside the Food Court there are other snack and eating options throughout the show and a

couple of year long regulars at the Pomeroy Sport Centre in Booster Juice and Jane’s Grill. By perusing this trade show supplement put out by the North East News, you should pretty well get all the information you are going to need for the trade show and for the heart of the show, go to pages B10 and B11 where the maps are located and you will see alphabetically, all of the exhibitors who make up the show. They are the bread and butter. Without them, we have nothing to show. Many are returnees and yet a good 35 to 40 per cent are newcomers. It is a real nice mix and we thank all the exhibitors for being here. I close my comments with heartfelt thanks to a group of individuals who work tirelessly before and during the show to ensure the general public gets a great show. This group is headed by Jeanette Johnston who not only assisted greatly as the assistant show producer but toils all weekend long with her husband Blair and family in looking after one of the door entrances. In the same category on working the doors tirelessly are Cynthia and Mark Lanovaz who have been helping me for more than a dozen years. Another awesome twosome is Nyomi Foster and Donni Levac who handle all the accounting trade show weekend. They are invaluable. As are the Astral Radio team of sales, on air and administration who all contribute in one way or another. And for the third year in a row I am blessed to have with me a great crew who work with me in the set up and help wherever needed during the show. My extreme gratitude to Roger Ness and his team, John and Ann Mast, Molly Stark, Andrea Brooks, Christina Hogarth, and Mary Daniel. This is the team that makes it happen. We hope you like what we have put together for you this year.

THIS YEAR`S SHOW STOPPER AT THE CKNL TRADE SHOW

Win a Seven Night Vacaton on a houseboat at the show

Organizers are always striving to find something new and different to attract people to the CKNL TRADE SHOW, and they think they have found it this year with the first time ever appearance by a houseboat company, Twin Anchors, from Sicamous. Not only is Twin Anchors in attendance with a 35 foot Cruiser that sleeps six and that will be on display on the Plaza in front of the Pomeroy Sport Centre throughout the trade show, they are also offering this year’s top door prize a seven night vacation aboard one of their luxurious houseboats. “It is a real coup to have Twin Anchors here,” says Trade Show Manager Gene Daniel. “We are indeed fortunate they included

us on their circuit tour of western Canada.” The public will have an opportunity to walk through the cruiser on display. All patrons 19 years of age and over who attend the trade show, will be given a draw slip for a chance to win the top prize which is valued at more than $5000.00. Entry forms are to be deposited at the Energy/Bear booth on the 2nd level where Twin Anchors is also set up to answer any questions you might have about houseboating. The draw will take place at 4:30 PM, on April 10th at the Draw Barrel site. Courtesy of Twin Anchors Houseboats, here are the details of the top prize. It is a 7 night vacation aboard a luxurious Cruise Craft ll – 15 sleeper houseboat on the Shuswap Lakes.

The winner can vacation any time except long weekends between May 1 and October 31, 2011. The houseboat has all the amenities you would ever want including a self contained fully equipped galley, 3 staterooms, 2 bathrooms, a residential range, 2 refrigerators, dishwasher, microwave, clothes dryer, home entertainment system that has CD stereo, TV and DVD, VHF communication, propane BBQ, fireplace, hot tub, and bridge deck command centre.

Krystal Elder and Her Snap Dragons Live Reptile Show Entertaining….educational….maybe even a once in a lifetime experience for many people…a chance to see a variety of reptiles such as the Sulcata Tortoise, the five foot long Honduran Milk Snake, the Crested Gecko, a green iguana, spiny tail lizard…just some of the creatures you`ll encounter at Krystal Elder`s “Snap Dragons Live Reptile show” at the Pomeroy Sports Centre 2nd level all three days of the CKNL Trade Show. Krystal will have special performance times at the trade show but in between performances there will be opportunities to visit with Krystal and learn more about her exceptional hobby. Krystal has been slowly evolving since 1999 when Krystal acquired her first iguana from her mother when she first moved to Edmonton. While her mother believed it to be a harmless obsession, she soon learned that she had created a monster. More than ten years later, Krystal has been successfully breeding and raising leopard geckos on a small scale, and is now

expanding this breeding hobby to include Kenyan Sand boas, corn snakes, and African Fat Tail geckos. As space allows, these projects will only grow. Snap Dragons is a business run by Krystal that was inspired and developed from a hobbyist`s passion of reptiles, amphibians and arachnids. What started with a single pet iguana turned into a career as quality pet supplies are shipped in for resale, feeder bug colonies have replaced the many books in the office and incubators are being filled with eggs from various animals. In addition to performing, she breeds snakes and lizards. She has a large diverse pet collection including dogs, cats, geckos, iguanas, pythons, king snakes, monitors, the popular Speedy the Sulcata Tortoise and her husband Dave. Krystal has been featured in many articles such as the Edmonton Journal and was the VP of the Edmonton Reptile and Amphibian Society before her SnapDragons Show took more of her time. Krystal has been seen on TV as well as becoming one

of the faces for a marketing campaign by the Western Canadian Reptile Expo. She has wowed thousands at corporate functions, schools, malls as well as displaying her reptiles at a zoo and working with her team at outdoor fairs. From private functions to large stages, Krystal has educated and entertained her crowds by discussing each one of her supporting cast of reptiles. Always eager to assist, Krystal offers personal Q and A`s and invites everyone to view the reptiles from a closer perspective. You may even have a chance to watch them take a dinner break eating a variety of vegetables. Her goal is to educate and to encourage proper husbandry associated with these exotic animals and help people to understand them as opposed to fear them. This major Trade Show attraction is a once in a lifetime opportunity to view some of the most amazing reptiles on earth. “Hands on Encounters!” “ Don`t Forget to Bring Your Cameras”

Entertainment Zone at the Show Fort St John has been designated as the “Music Capital of Northern BC”. And a good reason why this designation has been bestowed on the city comes from the hard work and effort put in by the individuals who make the Lido Theatre tick, and Fort St John`s country music phenomena, “Deere John.” The Lido Theatre team headed

by Brian Kirschner and Byron Stewart, and the Deere John members consisting of Randy Gee, Craig Brooks, James Webster, and Ken Kirschner will be circulating at the “Lido Theatre/Deere John Entertainment Zone” this trade show weekend. The Zone will feature a sampling of acoustic entertainers including Deere John and other acts associated with the Lido, who was just voted Fort St John`s best live entertainment venue. By stopping off at the Entertainment Zone, you will also get a good idea of what`s up and coming at the Lido which is now entering its 5th year of operation under the present format. Deere John, who released in October their 2nd album in four years, “Plough Your Mind”, is preparing for a major CD Release Party at the Lido Theatre in May, and will be selling tickets to this event as

Supplying Propane, Delivering Service

well as their new CD and their debut selftitled CD. At the trade show they`ll perform acoustically from time to time, but to really get the full flavor of the band, make sure you take in the CD Release Party and hear and see the band doing a live performance. You will not be disappointed in the high energy and excitement they put into each and every live performance. The Lido Theatre/ Deere John Entertainment Zone is situated in booths 113 and 114.

Pomeroy Sport Centre - Home to the CKNL Trade Show “EVERYTHING UNDER ONE ROOF ON TWO LEVELS” One of the most significant changes in 38 years of trade

shows in Fort St. John took place last year when the Trade Show moved to the city owned Pomeroy Sport Centre or the Enerplex as it was known by last year. The move was an instant success. Despite some growing pains and some tweaking that has been done for this year, the comments last year by exhibitors and the patrons were generally and overwhelming positive. What most people liked was that the entire show was under one roof. No longer did fair goers have to travel to three separate buildings to see the show. Patrons and the exhibitors were also complimentary about the state of the art facility with its attractive look inside and out. The Trade Show this year like last year will use two levels of the building. On the first level, with two NHL sized rinks, there`s close to 80 thousand square feet that is utilized for the trade show and on the second level, which is a 400 meter speed skating oval, one of only three indoor Olympic sized long tracks in North America, there is 60 thousand

The spring power event.

PARK PROPERLY AND RESPONSIBLY The city of Fort St John has gone to great lengths to maximize the amount of parking stalls that are available at the parking lots in the front and the back of the Pomeroy Sport Centre including a good number of specially marked handicapped spaces. Along with space by the Kids Arena, and on both sides of the north Peace Arena, there is space for a thousand or so vehicles. But even with all that parking, at the height of the trade show there can be congestion. That is why Trade Show organizers suggest taking public transit which goes right by and stops right at the Pomeroy Sport Centre. With no outside displays this year except for the WOW Bus, and the Twin Anchors Houseboat, that gives that much more space for parking. This past year, the city also paved the parking lots, installed good lighting and superb landscaping to make the outside area of the Pomeroy Sport Centre truly a remarkable sight and something of which we should all be proud. Of course it goes without saying, DO NOT PARK on the roadway around the Pomeroy Sport Centre. This is a fire lane and no parking signs will be posted and this area will be monitored and vehicles will be towed. Also, please have consideration for the neighbours of the Pomeroy Sport Centre and avoid parking in their lots.

square feet of space utilized for the trade show. There is a third level to the building: “The Northern Vac Track” which has become one of the most popular attractions of the new complex as hundreds of people daily take to the track to walk the circuit. However, during the trade show hours, the Northern Vac Track will not be in operation. There are three sets of stairs from the first level to the second level and an elevator in the lobby accessible to all. Since the show last year, the City has completed paving the parking lots in front and at the back of the Pomeroy Sport Centre, and while there will be no outside displays this year to eat up prime parking spots, it is still expected to be congested and organizers hope fair goers will take public transit which stops right by the complex. The building opened its doors on September 16th, 2009, and a year later it was named the Pomeroy Sport Centre after the Pomeroy Group headed by businessman Bob Pomeroy stepped forward to garner the naming rights for the edifice. While Bob Pomeroy now lives outside of Grande Prairie, the former Fort St John resident has kept his ties to the local community operating a host of businesses under the Pomeroy umbrella.

Best Booth Awards from 2010 Trade Show

Every year, awards are handed out to deserving exhibitors who put a lot of thought effort and originality into their booth. Judges are looking for booths that best exemplify what the business is all about, how the display stands out, and of course, the WOW factor. Over the past 38 years, there have been three firms who have won special meritorious awards for their consistent outstanding displays and numerous top three awards. The businesses that have earned that honour are: Trail Blazin` Power, Roxanne`s Interiors, and Systems by Trail. Looking at last year`s top three finishers, they were as follows: Creative Ironworks and Design of Calgary with their dazzling display of homemade

metal art and sculptures. They are coming back for a third consecutive year and will be in booths #63 and 64. Taking second spot last year was Fine Point Cedar Homes & Natures Best Landscape Products. The judges were impressed how Fine Point portrayed their Lindal Home display and while they will not be in this year`s show, Nature`s Best Landscape Products will be back joining forces with Rustico Log Structures in booth #124. And taking third spot was The Scottish Shoppe. Jim Osborne and son of the Scottish Shoppe, who are regulars at the trade show but unfortunately this year, they are visiting Scotland at the same time as the Trade Show and won’t be in attendance but ask their many fans, to look for them in 2012.

LEADERSHIP Making Life More Affordable People are working longer and harder to keep pace with rising prices. Harper and his 22 BC MPs made matters worse by voting to impose the HST. Lois Boone will make life more affordable by fighting to overturn the HST and remove federal taxes on home heating.

Creating and Protecting Jobs Lois Boone will push for improved training and sustainable job creation programs ensuring well-paying, secure jobs are both created and maintained right here at home.

Improving Rail Transportation Industry cannot move goods to market in a timely manner because of poor service from railroad monopolies. Lois Boone and the NDP will work to regulate rail carriers to ensure shippers can move products.

ABOUT LOIS BOONE: n Lois served as Deputy Premier of British Columbia and a BC Cabinet Minister n Lois is a School Board Trustee for School District #57 n Lois is a passionate advocate for people in the North n Lois and her family have made Prince George their home for over 40 years
