Financial Aid Eligibility

Every student’s financial situation is different. To determine your eligibility for different funding options, Northeastern considers the following factors:

Family Details

Your living situation, sibling enrollment status, and other details are considered for certain types of need-based aid.

Financial Circumstances

Your family’s income, assets (investments and savings, including home equity), and other details are considered as part of this process.

Citizenship

Based on financial need, U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens may have access to federally funded grants and loans.

Although international students are not eligible for federal aid, other financing options are available.

Enrollment Program

Students can join the Northeastern community through several campuses and programs, each with their own costs and financing options.

Types of Aid

There are several ways to fund your Northeastern education based on your eligibility, including:

Merit and Other Scholarship Programs

All students are considered for competitive scholarships based on their exceptional achievements. No separate application is needed.

Grants

Federal, state, and institutional sources can provide grants—a form of gift aid that does not need to be repaid—to students based on their financial need.

Work-Study

Students can earn money toward their education through federally funded, part-time employment through the university.

Loans

Many student loan options, including federal and private financing, are available to students and families.

Learn more at studentfinance.northeastern.edu/ types-of-aid.

Northeastern Promise

At Northeastern, we believe financing your education is a partnership that continues throughout your enrollment, not just your first year—that’s the Northeastern Promise.

Demonstrated Financial Need

We’re dedicated to meeting the full demonstrated need for each admitted student who is eligible for federal financial aid.

Awarded Aid

Northeastern University merit scholarships and Northeastern University grant funds will not be reduced during your undergraduate program (for up to eight in-class semesters).

Need-Based Grants

funds will increase annually at the same percentage rate as the increase in tuition.

Financial Hardship

If your family experiences a substantial adverse change in financial circumstances, we’ll reevaluate your aid package and make available all financial resources for which you qualify.

No Loans for Pell Recipients

In addition to the Northeastern Promise, we offer expanded financial support for eligible Federal Pell Grant recipients. We meet the full demonstrated need without federal direct loans by offering grants, scholarships, and work-study opportunities to qualifying students.

More Ways to Run With the Pack

Northeastern is committed to helping you make your higher education goals a reality. In addition to merit scholarships, needbased grants, federal work-study, and loans, we encourage you to consider these additional factors in your financial plan.

Payment Plan

Northeastern offers interest-free, semester-based, monthly payment plans. Families can enroll in a plan for a nominal fee and make budgeted installments to pay direct-billed expenses. Payment plans are budget-based and balances do not update automatically if your account balance changes.

No Tuition for Co-op

During co-op, you’re only responsible for housing and food costs. You won’t have to pay tuition unless you choose to enroll in courses during the experience.

Global Experience Funding

The university offers resources to offset the costs of travel and housing expenses for opportunities such as study abroad or global co-op.

Student Employment

Paid on-campus employment in university facilities or through approved employer partnerships can be a great option, particularly for international students. Learn more at studentemployment. northeastern.edu. For international students, visit international. northeastern.edu/ogs/employment.

Financial Tools for Families

We offer two tools that present informed estimates to help you better understand the cost of attending Northeastern and to help you create your financial plan.
