Northeastern built its reputation on experiential learning—allowing you to immediately apply the skills you learn in the classroom to the real world. Why? Because it works. Each experience incorporates practice that gives you an edge, preparing you to step outside the comfort zone of the classroom and into the real world, ready to chart a bold path. That’s the power of a Northeastern education.
No matter your program, major, or location, you can take advantage of our signature co-op program, exchanging your classroom studies with full-time work experience across the world for six-to-eight-month periods. These opportunities help you explore different career paths and solve real-world problems before graduating.
Students beginning in Boston, Oakland, or The N.U.in Program can take advantage of co-op as early as their second year. Students beginning as a London or New York City Scholar can participate in a co-op in the beginning of their third year.
While an internship gives an initial taste of a job, the fully immersive co-op experience allows you to take on real responsibility at a company or organization.

Northeastern offers unmatched opportunities for you to grow as a global citizen. You can participate in a traditional study abroad experience at an international university, in a global co-op, or in a Semester In, Summer In, or Dialogue of Civilization faculty-led excursion.
Worldwide research opportunities are available to all undergraduate students, from preventing tropical diseases in Africa to developing sensors for city-wide environmental monitoring. Students often receive grants and have access to numerous on-campus resources, including the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, to launch new research endeavors.
Put your knowledge to work for the good of others through service-based classes, on-campus organizations, and volunteer trips. Some students even establish nonprofits and community groups to address pressing needs.

Students apply what they learn in the classroom to the real world and what they learn in the real world to the classroom, creating a continuous learning cycle that allows them to master their field of study.
Students have the choice of pursuing one or more than one co-op during their undergraduate years. Working with your co-op advisor, you’ll determine when your co-op(s) best fits into your schedule, where you are interested in working, and what employers may be a good fit for you. Then, you’ll apply what you learned to your next set of courses when you return to campus.
Our students gain relevant, real-world experience: scuba divers explore the depths at our Nahant Center for Marine Biology, artists work on masterpieces in our Makerspaces, and emerging scientists gain the confidence to run labs independently.
