momentum: the impetus and driving force gained by the development of a process or course of events.

Sixty years ago, a small group of thoughtful citizens who shared a vision for our community’s future began a journey to create North Central Michigan College. This vision became a reality by setting into motion a course of events that has significantly enhanced our region’s economy, workforce and livability. It has benefi ted the lives of more than 11,000 students who have earned their North Central degrees, affording them improved lifestyles and increased earning potential.

Clifford Buckmaster, 1958 Legend has it that the idea for a community college in Petoskey was hatched in a duck blind in the early 1950s by Al Shankland and Clifford Buckmaster. Cliff taught at Petoskey Schools, and when Al Shankland joined Lincoln Elementary in 1951, the two bonded over a shared love of education and the outdoors. In 1957, a steering committee was formed to study the feasibility of having a college in this area. Clifford was named secretary and worked with school administrators and businesses through the study period, reporting all findings to the communit . Al served as the coordinator of the committee, and later became North Central’s first president. And the rest is history. The Buckmaster family has supported North Central since those early days. Clifford’s daughter-in-law, Karla, graduated from North Central in 1966. Clifford’s grandchildren, Scott (1993) and Stacey (1995), both attended North Central, and in 2018 his great-grandson, Kristian Reeb, enrolled in North Central’s Early College program. Kristian states, “I’m grateful a program like this exists as an outgrowth of the efforts of my great-grandfather Buckmaster, who was one of the several founders of North Central Michigan College.”

This report will examine the College’s 2017-18 performance, which is a snapshot of the present, upon which we will build our future.

Today’s energy continues the momentum necessary to create an exciting future. It’s all about the students. Due to the continued growth of the Early College program, the 2017-18 academic year saw a 7 percent increase in enrollment from the fall 2017 to the winter 2018 semester. This is the largest number of students since the peak enrollment period during the 2009-10 recession.

Kelly Suter, 2008 graduate “Though I was born in Kalamazoo, Northern Michigan has played an important role in my family’s history for many generations. I consider Petoskey my home. In 1986, my aunt became the first member o the family to graduate from North Central Michigan College’s nursing program. It has since become a family tradition, with 13 other family members having graduated from the nursing program to date. After graduating in 2008, I went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing, a master’s degree in nursing education and a master’s degree in healthcare bioethics. I have been an ER nurse for 10 years and have spent 8 of those years engaged in international disaster relief work, including cholera in Haiti, Ebola in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal, war in South Sudan, post-war rebuilding efforts in East Timor, flooding in ouisiana and hurricanes in Texas and Florida. North Central Michigan College provided the knowledge base and practical skills I needed to continue my education and provide life-saving treatment and education to individuals in need around the world.”

Riley Hoffman, a Presidential scholar and CNC student, used the CNC mill to create an Egyptian stele (an inscribed tablet used as a funereal or commemorative piece) for his art history class. “Both art and CNC manufacturing have a planning stage where you choose which material you want to use and design what you want to make out of that material. The only difference is the use,” states Riley. “I wanted to bring art and CNC together for this project.” The British Museum sent Riley a high resolution image of the stele. The piece is made out of .5” aluminum plate measuring 19” by 20.5.”

HIRING EVENT IN GAYLORD

North Central Michigan College, in partnership with area businesses and organizations, hosted Michigan’s Largest Hiring Event on March 10 in the Ellison Place in Gaylord. More than 72 businesses participated and more than 489 prospective employees attended. This event was inspired by our area businesses’ need for full-time, part-time and seasonal workers.

James Benzing

North Central graduate Christopher James Benzing of Gaylord is one of three recent graduates of the 134th Trooper Recruit School reporting for duty at the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post. He is currently in the Field Training Office Program phase, where he will remain for 17 weeks before his training is complete. After graduating from North Central, James received his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Lake Superior State University. When asked why he decided to become an MSP trooper, James replied, “The best way I’ve heard it phrased is, ‘All our job boils down to is being the adult in the room.’ Everyone looks to you to fix the problem. As a much-respected Petoskey physician, Dr. Postle brought thousands of infants into the world. In service to the community, he helped shape how and where those children and generations of children beyond are educated. After serving in the Navy, Jack completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Ohio State University Hospital. In 1960, he and his young family moved to Petoskey, where Jack was the first OB-GYN at the Burns Medical Center, starting a department that grew to five members at the time of his retirement in 1991. He also enjoyed serving the community, and in 1972, Jack learned about an upcoming election for North Central trustees. Almost on a whim, he went down to the county courthouse and put his name on the ballot. He won the election and went on to serve two six-year terms.

Jack Postle

As a conservation advocate, he and his wife Pat ensured their much-loved family farm will remain part of this area’s natural beauty in perpetuity. Dr. Postle served on the Board when the library/ conference center project was initiated, was delighted to help hand out diplomas on graduation day, and was helpful in fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between North Central and the hospital. He also served on the Foundation Board during its inaugural years, an institution whose work he believes remains essential to securing North Central’s future. “In everything I do,” he says, “I like to leave it better than how I found it. That’s been a guiding light for me: to leave it better for having been there.”

environmental stewardship

North Central is also a responsible steward of our environment. In 2018, a sustainability committee was created by faculty and staff, dedicated to producing measurable progress in making our campus more sustainable. They will make recommendations for changes that reduce the College’s environmental impact, encourage fisca responsibility and educate students and the community about best practices for a sustainable future. Completed projects: Thanks to a grant from the Michigan Agency for Energy, North Central has converted 52 parking lot lights to LED, reducing energy by 14,560 watts per hour, and saving the College $4,240 in operating costs annually. With a grant from Coca-Cola/Keep America Beautiful and the efforts of North Central Student Hannah Jaskowski, Emmet County Recycling, and North Central Physical Plant employees, we added 15 new recycling bins throughout campus, reducing the amount of landfill material produced by the college and increasing the volume of recyclables sent to Emmet County Recycling.

Upcoming projects: The NCMC Foundation was awarded a grant from the Little Traverse Bay Protection and Restoration Fund of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation to install biological technology to treat wastewater from a portion of the campus residence building. This system treats wastewater on-site, thereby reducing NCMC’s impact on Petoskey’s municipal treatment facility. North Central is collaborating with Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council on the “North Central Michigan College Stormwater Wetland Restoration” project. As part of this project, the college installed flo ae that improves infilt ation and reduces stormwater runoff on campus.

foundation highlights

The North Central Michigan College Foundation continues to thrive with the support of our many donors throughout the country. Our annual campaign received contributions of more than $750,000. Two hundred sixty-two students became the first in their family to attend college in 2017-18. Thanks to our donors, our first-gene ation students have hope for a better future. Gifts to North Central also change the lives and paths of adult learners living in this community. Thanks to our donors, nontraditional students can return to school and receive a high-quality education and training opportunities for a better career and life. And behind every successful student who moves on to pursue a career or bachelor’s degree, there are supporters making sure that they graduate with a minimal amount of student debt. Our donors are critical to ensuring North Central has the resources necessary to advance our curriculum and accommodate the academic, cultural and training needs of a dynamic community. This year more than $378,000 in scholarships were awarded by the Foundation to our students, an increase of more than $50,000 from 2016-17. Events also play a role in raising much-needed dollars for scholarships. The 22nd annual Scramble for Scholarships Golf Outing and the 20th annual NCMC Cookout raised close to $30,000 for the Foundation Scholarship fund. The 2017 Garden Party raised $58,000 for scholarships for students enrolled in the College’s CNC program. Foundation support also helps the College maintain state-of-the-art learning environments. In 2017-2018, the NCMC Foundation Board of Directors approved grants for the following: •

A collaborative project with the biology faculty to design a new laboratory experience for our students in their study of the human nervous system by purchasing “human-human-interface” kits that will allow one student to temporarily take control of another student’s wrist and hand with a series of electrodes, an Arduino unit, and a TENS stimulator. Students will learn exciting neuroscience concepts firsthand as their b ain sends an electrical impulse to their arm’s muscles, telling them to move, and when their muscles move, this generates an even larger electrical signal. They take that electricity and further amplify it and inject it into the nerves controlling another person’s arm.

Computer equipment necessary to make a series of videos for content that developmental mathematics students routinely find challenging. Live video links on student study guides will be created and will be available for every North Central student taking developmental mathematics classes.

SAFETY GRANT

The Local Revenue Sharing Board provided a grant to North Central Michigan College to support access control implementation in order to prevent intruders from gaining access to College buildings. Access control allows North Central to lock down the entire campus remotely with minimal human intervention – i.e., with a couple of keystrokes or clicks on a smartphone, the College can lock all campus buildings instantly and simultaneously.

alumni support

Alumni play a large role in determining the future and continued development of any institution. Their donations go a long way toward supporting scholarships for deserving students who are short of funds. Alumni are giving back to more than their alma mater in this case; they are also helping someone gain a valuable asset, a quality education. North Central is deeply grateful for the support of our alumni and would like to highlight two special donations. Mary Helliesen, a 1963 graduate, established a memorial scholarship in memory of her brother, John G. Tillotson, Jr. John was from a family of six, four of whom graduated from North Central Michigan College. Each had to work to finance their college educations, and scholarships played an important role.

Susan Van Gee & Michael Schirk

Susan Van Gee, a 1973 graduate, and her husband Michael Schirk established the Susan J. Van Gee and Michael G. Schirk Endowed Nursing Scholarship in July 2017. Susan enrolled in North Central’s nursing program in 1971 and went on to receive her Master’s of Science in Nursing in 1977. She and Michael then moved to Canton, Georgia, where she enjoyed a career in psychiatric nursing. Susan attributes all of her success to North Central – from the quality education to the support she received from the College. Susan states, “I want others to have the same incredible experience that I had at North Central. My experiences at the college were literally life-changing.”

Lakrisha Dillworth Lakrisha Dillworth of Ann Arbor is a first-generation student at North Central Michigan College. She received a scholarship from the NCMC Foundation in 2017-2018 and received the Robert Emmet Society Scholarship in 2018 to study at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. Lakrisha states, “North Central has helped me in more ways than one. The professors and staff pushed to challenge me - not only academically, but personally. As a first-generation student and the oldest of nine, I’m trying my hardest to set a well-structured example that my siblings may follow. I’m now stronger than ever, and for that, North Central will always hold a special place in my heart.” She continues, “As a North Central student, I have had many advantages and wonderful opportunities, including a semester abroad. I am living the dream – studying history, among other things, in Ireland. I’m super excited about going on castle tours! I really want to make the most of this learning experience.” Lakrisha will graduate in May 2019 with an associate degree and plans to transfer to Western Michigan University to study construction engineering.
