Greetings, Northcenter!

It seems that each year goes by faster than the last, and I’m thrilled to share another beautiful Community Guide with you. You’ll find this booklet packed with information about our neighborhood – plenty of familiar places and faces, but many new ones as well!

This year we highlight that Northcenter is a place for all of our residents and visitors, through all of life’s stages and journeys. Whether you have young children, you’re a young professional, an empty nester, or in your golden years, Northcenter is for you!

The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce has been supporting the community since 1946, but many families and businesses have been here far longer than that. Our chamber is here to serve you, so that you find success and joy in our community in the present and long into the future.

As you read through the guide, I hope you know that you—as a resident, visitor, family, or business—are the heart of Northcenter and what make this community the vibrant place that it is. On behalf of the Board of Directors and chamber team, I’m truly grateful for your commitment and support of this neighborhood.

Dear neighbors, Northcenter is known for its excellent schools, vibrant commercial corridors, and beautiful parks and playlots. Many members of our ward take pride in living in such a welcoming and close-knit neighborhood, and thousands of residents from throughout our city frequently travel to Northcenter to take advantage of its many culinary and cultural offerings.

Our local businesses play a central role in making our neighborhoods the dynamic and unique places they are, and this is as true in Northcenter as anywhere else. From taverns and coffee shops to specialty retail and professional services, small businesses in Northcenter help make the neighborhood special. That’s why I will be proud, as your Alderman, to support them by ensuring that, despite the challenges we face, the neighborhood and its local economy will continue to thrive for years to come. I look forward to doing this work alongside you.

Community Minded

From families who have been in the neighborhood for decades to a new influx of young professionals, Northcenter combines big-city life with a neighborly attitude. Community events such as the Northcenter Farmers Market and Summer Concert Series bring people from all walks of life together. Four Chicago Parks serve the neighborhood and Northcenter Town Square provides another dynamic gathering place. You will also find plenty of organizations and service providers improving quality of life for veterans, youth, senior citizens and disabled neighbors, as well as religious communities for many faiths.

Easily Accessible

A variety of transit options conveniently connect Northcenter to the whole city. Three CTA Brown Line stations, a nearby Ravenswood Metra station and key bus routes along Irving Park, Damen, Ashland and Western make Northcenter a hub for North Side travel. There are also bike-friendly options including marked bike lanes on Damen and Lincoln Avenues and a Neighborhood Greenway on Berteau Avenue. Seventeen bike-sharing stations located throughout the Northcenter neighborhood make it easy to get around.

A Destination for Dining

From Michelin guide-acclaimed gastronomic delights, hidden neighborhood comfort-food dives to authentic regional cuisines from around the globe, Northcenter has a wide variety of dining options. If you are looking for a drink afterwards, you can find everything from exquisite craft cocktails to $2 cans at one of the many neighborhood bars and taverns. Northcenter is the beating heart of Chicago’s craft brew movement with acclaimed breweries like Begyle Brewing, Dovetail Brewery, Burning Bush Brewery and new to the neighborhood, Hop Butcher!

You don’t have to go downtown or to Second City to enjoy a great night out at the theatre. Northcenter has some of the city’s best performing arts gems. Enjoy improv comedy at Cornservatory or Bughouse Theater or acclaimed live theatre at Windy City Playhouse and Ghostlight Ensemble. Take in an evening of live music at Martyrs’, a top spot for great local and national musical acts. In the summer, many storytelling and performance groups gather for open-air performances in Northcenter Town Square. When it comes to locally-inspired shopping, Northcenter is one of Chicago’s “most creatorinfluenced neighborhoods,” according to Do312. Visit the “Makers and Merchants” row on Lincoln Avenue, south of Irving Park, for beautiful furniture, handmade accessories, and more.

Eclectic

Independent businesses and mom ‘n’ pop shops are the backbone of any community, and Northcenter has some of Chicago’s best hidden gems. From games and comic books to handmade jewelry and accessories; from craft brews to crafting supplies, your new favorite store is around the corner, so go ahead and treat yourself.

Scholarly

Bell, Coonley and Ravenswood Elementary Schools are among the best schools in the Chicago Public School system. Both Bell and Coonley offer gifted programs and Ravenswood is a fine and performing arts-focused neighborhood magnet school. A robust private school selection rounds out your great education options, and the influx of new families has brought a number of new high-quality early childhood care centers to Northcenter.

About the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce

Since 1946, the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce has been committed to strengthening the vibrant Northcenter business community and promoting the well-being of the neighborhood. What began as a small merchants’ organization has evolved into one of Chicago’s largest and most active neighborhood small business organizations.

The Chamber employs a variety of programs, events and initiatives to connect our local businesses to the community and to each other. From a robust marketing program to fun business-to-business events, from educational programming to public works initiatives like our recent Town Square redevelopment efforts, the Chamber is always seeking new ways to serve and enhance the Northcenter neighborhood.

A packed calendar of free, seasonal community programming, including our Halloween Trick-or-Treat, Farmers Market, Summer Concert Series and Small Business Saturday, combines neighborhood fun for all ages with opportunities for businesses and residents to engage with one another.

For more than 20 years, the Northcenter Chamber has hosted one of Chicago’s signature summer events, Ribfest Chicago, which introduces 50,000 guests annually to our amazing neighborhood and its merchants. Reinvesting in our community is a top priority, and since 2008, the Northcenter Chamber has contributed more than $400,000 to local schools and nonprofits through its innovative Ribfest Chicago philanthropy programs.

SSA #38

Special Service Area #38 Northcenter was created in 2006 to provide enhanced cleaning, landscaping, snow removal and other services to the business district’s main corridors, helping to ensure the area is vibrant, safe and welcoming for residents and business owners. The SSA provides a locally controlled way for the community to implement enhancements in the manner neighborhood stakeholders envision them, and ensures that local tax dollars are reinvested in the community, going to services that directly benefit the Northcenter neighborhood.

SSA #38 is mainly a “clean and green” SSA, focusing on core supplemental services to improve the safety and aesthetic appeal of the Northcenter neighborhood’s key streets, therefore beautifying the community and contributing to the value of local businesses and homes. Over the past year, SSA #38 provided Northcenter with sidewalk snow removal, litter pickup, weed removal, lightpole banners, holiday decor, planting and maintenance of the sidewalk planters, hanging baskets and pedestal beds around the neighborhood, as well as maintenance of the Northcenter Town Square and the Irving Park Road streetscape between Wolcott Avenue and the Chicago River.

SSA #38 is expecting great things in the years to come, including focusing more efforts on public art, safety rebates for businesses and the continued growth of the Retail Northcenter initiative, which connects prospective business owners to vacant properties in the area.

With your children grown and on their own, take advantage of your new free time and treat yourself to a quiet date night out, pick up a new hobby, get together with other older adults and empty nesters or take an extra class.

If you want to see what resources and programs are available for seniors in the neighborhood, the North Center Senior Satellite Center is a great place to start. Part of the City of Chicago Senior Services program which helps keep seniors active and involved, the center is open to adults 55 and over Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Next, check out Forward Chicago’s roster of activities. Forward Chicago is a non-profit organization that connects neighbors of all ages with local organizations and businesses. They host many events at the Sultzer Library such as Bridge, Mahjong, and Repair Café, where you can fix broken but well loved household items.

If you want to stay in shape, visit Galter Lifecenter. Galter offers an array of group classes geared for older active adults including aquatic and floor exercise classes, yoga and chair fitness classes. It’s never too late to become a dancer. The professional dancers at Perceptual Motion, Inc. range in age from 25 to 74 years old. PMI has a long history of artistic programming for seniors in addition to dance concerts for the general public. In 2005 The National Center for Creative Aging honored PMI as one of six organizations named Selected Best Practices in Dance for Older People.

Four Generations of Krasneys in Northcenter

In 1946, Abe Krasney first opened the doors to Cole’s Appliances and Furniture Co. to his Northcenter neighbors. Situated on the same Lincoln and Cuyler corner for 77 years, Cole’s is a true “neighborhood mom and pop shop.” Abe’s son, Barry, worked in the store and met his wife, Mari, who grew up on Cuyler down the street from their store. Barry took over the business in the 1990’s and expanded their sales to Chicago's landlords and property managers while maintaining Cole’s loyal customer base of Northcenter residents.

Three generations later, Kevin Krasney now operates this family-owned business. Following his father’s lead, Kevin has continued to expand the business by being the go-to shop for local builders and designers. This expansion allows Cole’s to inventory high-end appliances and furniture in addition to more affordable and basic brands. It also means that, as the same “neighborhood mom and pop shop” as when it first opened, Cole’s can offer its neighborhood customer base more competitive pricing—often beating big box stores.

The Krasney family remains active in the Northcenter neighborhood. Kevin’s daughters, Tybee and Olive, enjoy spending time in the store playing with kids while their parents shop. Tybee and Olive also love to help customers choose fabrics for their furniture. Kevin served on the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and frequently volunteers and attends Chamber events. Kevin’s brother, Keith, lives in the neighborhood with his family. Keith's children attend St. Benedict, just like their grandmother Mari once did.

When asked what he likes about Northcenter, Kevin stated that it has a warm, cozy feel. It’s inviting and not pretentious. He also noted that families that move to Northcenter tend to settle down and not move out once their kids get into school.
