A MESSAGE FROM... Chamber of Commerce President Joe Wilcox To my fellow Northcenter Business Owners, Neighbors and Friends, As the 2017 President of the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce, I want to welcome you to our great neighborhood The Northcenter neighborhood has been home to my family and our business for four generations. In that time, I have watched the neighborhood and its business community grow bigger and stronger, and the Chamber has reflected that growth by adding more enriching programming, increasing and diversifying its membership, turning Ribfest Chicago into a nationally-recognized destination event and reinvesting money back into our local schools and nonprofit organizations. As a longtime Northcenturian, I am particularly proud of that last item. Our local schools and nonprofit organizations are an essential part of this tight-knit, neighborly community, and the Chamber has made it a priority to support them through the Ribfest Volunteer Grant and Philanthropy programs, and we are sharing some of the great stories of these partnerships in this year’s guide. Our local business community has an incredible generosity of spirit, demonstrated through participation in Chamber events like our annual Season of Giving drive for Common Pantry, hosting or sponsoring events in support of local schools and charities and through a commitment to friendly, welcoming customer service. I hope you will use this guide as a resource to explore Northcenter and choose to patronize local, independent businesses. When you shop local, you support the community and its continued prosperity.

47th Ward Alderman Ameya Pawar Dear Neighbors, I welcome you to Chicago’s 47th Ward featuring the vibrant North Center community, one of the most desirable places to live, work, play and do business in Chicago. Known for excellent schools, beautiful homes and gardens, walkable neighborhoods with nearby parks and playlots, and a renovated METRA and CTA public transit system, the area continues to improve with new school additions, renovated utility mains, completed streetscapes, proposed and built developments, and new businesses in tune with the needs and wants of this in-touch community. Our local business scene boosts popular ethnic restaurants and themed taverns, clothing and gift shops, home supply stores and supermarkets, new art galleries and established live theaters, all within reach by a pleasant stroll. North Center is sought out by many new businesses including preschools, specialty grocery stores, fitness centers, wine shops and restaurants. My office works every day to help new and existing business to thrive in the 47th Ward. Come visit the 47th Ward Public Service Office at 4243 N. Lincoln Avenue or call 773-868-4747 if we can help you or answer any questions. If you want to know about happenings around the ward, sign up for our weekly newsletter at www.chicago47.org. Sincerely, Ameya Pawar Alderman, 47th Ward

If you are not a member and you are interested in finding out more about the fantastic benefits the Northcenter Chamber provides to local businesses, I encourage you to stop by our offices on Lincoln Avenue, or better yet, come on out to one of our community events and see for yourself why this Chamber is truly as special as the people who work and live in the neighborhood. By staying connected with the neighborhood, supporting local businesses and helping our neighbors, we can ensure a bright future for our neighborhood. Your fellow Northcenturian, Joseph Wilcox President, Northcenter Chamber of Commerce Owner of The Wilcox Company

WELCOME TO NORTHCENTER Great Neighborhood Checklist Food & Drink: Whether you enjoy Michelin guide-acclaimed gastronomic delights, hidden neighborhood comfort-food dives or authentic regional cuisines from around the globe, Northcenter has mouthwatering dining options for all tastes. If you are looking for a drink afterwards, you can find everything from exquisite craft cocktails to $1 cans at one of more than 30 neighborhood bars and taverns. Late last year, The Hop Review readers named Northcenter the best Chicago neighborhood for beer, and with acclaimed breweries like Half Acre Beer Company, Begyle, Spiteful and Dovetail Brewery, Northcenter is the beating heart of Chicago’s craft brew movement. Shopping: Independent businesses and mom ‘n’ pop shops are the backbone of any community, and Northcenter has some of Chicago’s best hidden gems. From games and comic books to handmade jewelry and accessories; from craft brews to crafting supplies, your new favorite store is around the corner, so go ahead and treat yourself. Be sure to check out the “Maker's Row” on Lincoln Avenue, south of Irving Park, for beautiful furniture, handmade accessories and more.

Real Estate: Over the past several years, Chicago Magazine, WGN and real estate leaders like Redfin and Movoto have all named Northcenter one of the hottest neighborhoods in Chicago to live and buy real estate, citing the neighborhood’s ideal location, community and great education options. Northcenter single-family and condo home sales have been steadily rising, and the neighborhood remains one of Chicago’s most stable and sought-after real estate markets. Education: Bell Elementary and Coonley Elementary are two of the finest schools in the Chicago Public School system. Ravenswood School, a fine arts-focused neighborhood magnet, is a hidden gem with a strong sense of community. A robust private school selection rounds out your great education options, and the influx of new families has brought a number of high-quality early childhood care centers to Northcenter. Community: From families who have been in the neighborhood for decades to a new influx of young professionals, Northcenter combines big-city life with a neighborly attitude. Community events such as Ravenswood ArtWalk and the Chamber’s own Ribfest Chicago and Summer Concert Series bring people from all walks of life together. You will also find plenty of organizations and service providers improving quality of life for veterans, senior citizens and people with disabilities, as well as religious communities for many faiths.

Community Events The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is proud to host the following events. Community events are FREE except as noted.

Entertainment: You don’t have to go downtown or to Second City to enjoy a great night out at the theater. Northcenter has some of the city’s best performing arts gems. Enjoy Chicago’s most beloved art form—improv comedy—at Cornservatory, Bughouse Theater and the Laugh Out Loud theater. Music lovers will fall for Martyrs’, one of Chicago’s top spots for great local and national musical acts. Take in a world of tunes at other eclectic venues around the neighborhood, or give the dance floor a spin at Dance Center Chicago. Check out acclaimed live theatre right here at American Theater Company and Windy City Playhouse, or visit any number of local pubs for captivating storytelling and “live lit” nights. Or, gather up some friends and visit one of the neighborhood’s two bowling alleys. There’s truly something for everyone! Travel: A variety of transit options conveniently connect Northcenter to the whole city. Three CTA Brown Line stations, nearby Ravenswood Metra station and key bus routes along Irving Park, Damen, Ashland and Western make Northcenter a hub for North Side travel. For more active commuters, Northcenter is one of the city’s most bike-friendly neighborhoods, with designated bike lanes on Damen Avenue, shared lanes on Lincoln and a bike-sharing station in Northcenter Town Square.

MAKING AN IMPACT: INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY Chamber Invests in Local Community Groups Investment in our community has been one of the guiding principles of the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce. In addition to events and programs that support economic and community development in Northcenter, the Chamber takes a more direct approach to giving back to the community. Since 2008, the Chamber has given more than $300,000 to local schools and nonprofits through our philanthropy programs, and in this very special issue of the Northcenter Community Guide, we offer a look at the programs and initiatives the Chamber has supported and the local schools and nonprofits making an impact in Northcenter, and making our neighborhood a little more, well, neighborly.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Ribfest and help ensure the festival runs smoothly. The Volunteer Grant Program is a win/win for the Chamber and the program’s beneficiaries. Each group that volunteers 30 or more people for one or more time slots over the course of the event is awarded a cash grant. The program is growing every year, not only in the number of volunteers, but participating organizations. In 2016, through this innovative program, Ribfest Chicago awarded about $20,000 in Volunteer Grants to schools and community organizations that education, engage youth, fight hunger and provide essential services. We hope to make an even greater impact in the years to come.

Businesses Who Give Back We are proud to showcase the Chamber’s philanthropic efforts in this year’s Community Guide, but we also wanted to take a moment to highlight the ways our business community is giving back to the neighborhood directly. We asked some of our local business owners to share why supporting the community is important to them, and highlight the ways they’re doing it. These are just a few of many examples, and we’ll be sharing more stories on our website, northcenterchamber.com.

Not only in, but for

In 2016, through the Chamber’s annual philanthropy program, we were able to help purchase equipment for CHIRP Radio’s new terrestrial broadcast, support programs for students with special needs at Coonley Elementary, help fund construction and equipment for a new gym at GiGi’s Playhouse’s Northcenter location, support Common Pantry’s initiatives to help break the cycle of poverty, help upgrade the basketball facilities at the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club and more! You’ll be able to read more about these efforts and more throughout the guide. The Chamber’s largest event, Ribfest Chicago, began as a fundraiser to support our work. As the festival grew, the Chamber and Big Buzz Idea Group saw an opportunity to give back to the community more directly, and the Ribfest Volunteer Grant Program was born.

When Dan Scott was growing up in suburban Michigan, his mother visited a clothing store and asked them to hang up a poster for an upcoming play at Scott’s school. The store manager not only refused to put up the poster, but scoffed at the idea of contributing to the neighborhood. So when Scott opened his UPS Store location on Lincoln Avenue, that childhood experience showed him the exact opposite of what he wanted his store to be. “I knew then that I wanted to show that we’re not only in the community, but for the community,” Scott says. In addition to involvement with the Chamber, Scott and the UPS Store are enthusiastic supporters of our local elementary school, Coonley Elementary. The UPS Store is one of dozens of neighborhood businesses that support Coonley as part of Coonley Core, the school’s business sponsorship program. As a “Platinum Level” member of Coonley Core, Scott prints the packets for Coonley’s annual Spring Fling fundraiser for free. “It’s a labor of love,” Scott says. “We can’t lose sight of taking care of our neighbors.”

The gift of wellness After a rigorous run of helping clients through squats and deadlifts, the trainers at Orange Shoe Fitness take their role to Neumann Family Services, where they teach clients healthy habits and enjoy fun, engaging workouts. In 2013, trainers at Orange Shoe began twiceweekly trainings with clients from the agency, which promotes quality of life, inclusion and independence for people with disabilities, about cardiovascular health, strength and other areas of wellness. continued on page 7

Special Service Area #38 Special Service Area #38 was created in 2006 to provide enhanced cleaning, landscaping, snow removal and other services on Northcenter’s primary streets and to help promote Northcenter as a vibrant community for residents and business owners. The SSA provides a locally controlled way for the community to implement enhancements in the way neighborhood stakeholders envision them, and ensures that local tax dollars are reinvested in the community, going to services that directly benefit the community. SSA #38 is a “clean and green” SSA, focusing on core supplemental services to improve the safety and aesthetic appeal of the Northcenter neighborhood’s key streets, therefore beautifying the community and contributing to the value of local businesses and homes. Over the past year, SSA #38 provided Northcenter with sidewalk snow removal, litter pickup and sidewalk maintenance, weed removal and planting and maintenance of the sidewalk planters, hanging baskets and pedestal beds around the neighborhood, as well as maintenance of the Irving Park Road streetscape between Ravenswood Avenue and the Chicago River. SSA #38 is expecting great things in the years to come, including focusing more efforts on developing our neighborhood public spaces such as Northcenter Town Square and the continued growth of the Retail Northcenter initiative, which connects prospective business owners to vacant properties in the area. For more information about SSA #38, please visit the Chamber website at northcenterchamber.com.

“Anyone can write a check, but when you donate your time and your service to help people live a healthier, better life, it has a great impact,” says Orange Shoe Fitness owner Wade Anderson. “We are happy to give back to the community.”

2017 Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

In addition to physical activity, the trainers also include anatomy lessons, creating an educational opportunity for Neumann’s clients. “We’ll let them know what muscles we’re working on,” Anderson told DNAInfo.com. “We’ll say, ‘We’re doing it for our glutes!’” The trainers have also worked with clients on nutrition and have seen positive results. The gift of creating those habits can last a lifetime, and Orange Shoe’s work is appreciated.

This year, the Chamber honored Cheryl Maliszewski of Mainstream Boutique (far right below) and Carrie Bowers of embellish Boutique (second from left below) with the Garrett FitzGerald Corporate Citizenship Award, given annually to a local business going above and beyond for the community.

One particularly impressive aspect of Bowers and Maliszewski’s work was the emphasis on collaboration, and they sought to work together on an event that would bring both stores together. The answer came when they overheard two customers discussing Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. “They wondered where they could donate their pieces after they went through their closets and jewelry boxes,” Bowers says. “I realized that day that we should offer that to our customers!” The plan grew from there: both stores offered customers an opportunity to bring unwanted or unused jewelry in to embellish and clothing to Mainstream for a 20% discount to both stores. From there, all the clothes and accessories were donated to Sarah’s Circle, a local women’s shelter. The event was a great success: Customers appreciated the chance to give their clothes to a good cause, and Sarah’s Circle appreciated the high volume of donations! They were even able to offer two events for their members, to take clothing and accessories for job interviews. “As business owners in an industry that puts us in front of many people, it is important that we set a good example for others and send a message that we can all give back together,” Bowers says. “Business owners do need to support schools and different organizations in their community. We are thankful for the community giving us so much support.”

OUR LITERARY ‘HOOD

Walking a Tightrope

Northcenter has something for everyone, but did you know our neighborhood has a huge writing community? Between accomplished, published novelists, educators and live-lit storytellers and producers, we have many talented neighbors putting their words on page and stage. We are proud this year, for the first time ever, to feature a host of local authors’ works in our community guide. Visit our website at www.northcenterchamber.com for more on each of these talented wordsmiths and where to purchase their work.

James Finn Garner James Finn Garner, who lives in the Northcenter neighborhood, is the author of the international best-seller Politically Correct Bedtime Stories and the awardwinning clown noir mystery series starring “Rex Koko, Private Clown”. A former columnist for Chicago Magazine, he often performs in live lit events around Chicago. Enjoy these verses from Bardball.com, a site for daily baseball doggerel he has operated for 10 seasons. His work can be found at www.jamesfinngarner.com.

(Published after Game 5 of the World Series) Chicago fans live and breathe hope Yet Joe’s moves would’ve frightened the pope. Did he forget he had Wood, Grimm and Strop When from the pen Aroldis did lope? Was he “giving himself enough rope” Or following his horoscope, Hurtling down a treacherous slope By aggressively pushing the envelope? Was our genius skipper really a dope? Nope!

Christmas Eve in October (Published on the first day of the 2016 postseason) The drenching rains have parted An autumn breeze comes in Can they finish what they started? Old doubts keep crawling in But true joy reigns in Wrigleyville The pre-game mood is bright The halo ’round the Cubs there still Undimmed til first pitch tonight. Learn more about another one of our neighborhood authors, Jennifer Allison, on page 21.

Jennifer Allison Northcenter writer and educator Jennifer Allison is the author of seven novels for young readers published by Penguin Books: the Gilda Joyce: Psychic Investigator mystery series for ages 10 and up, and Iggy Loomis: Superkid in Training, a duo of illustrated chapter books for younger readers.

Exceptional Catholic Education St. Benedict Preparatory School Pre-K through 8th Grade stbenedict.com

A former journalist, book editor, and high school English teacher, Jennifer Allison currently teaches writing workshops in K-12 classrooms throughout the Chicago area and also tutors students of all ages on all aspects of the writing process for academic and creative projects. All of Jennifer Allison’s books are available at independent bookstores including The Book Cellar in Lincoln Square or online through Amazon.com.

An excerpt from Iggy Loomis: Superkid-in-Training I knew it would happen eventually, but I didn’t think my nightmare would come true quite so soon. Well, it happened today: My parents decided to move my little brother, Iggy, into my bedroom.

Big deal, Daniel, you’re probably thinking. Lots of kids have to share bedrooms with their brothers and sisters and they don’t whine about it. A few of them even like it. Did I mention that Iggy has only been potty trained for a few months? …

A world-class education right around the corner.

It had finally happened. I was cornered with no escape from the little brother invasion. I looked at my favorite Planet Blaster models and sighed. I knew what would happen: Iggy would want to play with all my toys, and within hours, he would break everything. Mary A. Osborne is an award-winning author who calls Northcenter home. CHIRP Radio

A CHIRP Radio producer prepares the next song at CHIRP's studio on North Rockwell Avenue. As Chicago's leading independent community radio station, CHIRP's reach will increase soon with the introduction of a terrestrial station. A Northcenter Chamber grant helped CHIRP purchase a necessary emergency alert system for the station tower. We're excited to see CHIRP grow in the future.

Nieghborhood Boys & Girls Club

GIGI's Playhouse Chicago

A coach leads young basketball players through skill drills in the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club’s small gym, now a basketball practice facility thanks to a grant from the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce. More than 600 children participate in NBGC’s youth sports programs. “The basketball program helps give kids a safe place to go after school and teaches them sportsmanship and teamwork,” says NBGC Development Director Bill Abplanalp. “Kids play on the same team every year and forge lifelong friendships.”

Students learn fundamentals of balance and focus at a yoga class at GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago’s new Get Fit Gym. The gym is one of many new wellness-focused additions at GiGi’s, an Achievement Center offering activities, resources, educational programs and support for individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the community. The Northcenter Chamber’s grant program supported portions of the construction and equipment for the gym.

Mary A. Osborne Mary A. Osborne is the award-winning author of Alchemy’s Daughter and Nonna’s Book of Mysteries. Her novels were inspired by travels to Tuscany and the walled village of Certaldo—home of medieval author Giovanni Boccaccio. A blend of history, alchemy, adventure, and romance, her writing appeals to adults as well as teens. A graduate of Rush University and Knox College, Ms. Osborne is a registered nurse and holds degrees in chemistry and nursing. Her freelance work has appeared in publications including Hektoen International, NewCity, and Examiner.com. She is a Chicago native. Learn more about the author at MaryAOsborne.com. Buy her books at any bookstore or: https://www.amazon.com/Nonnas-Book-Mysteries-Alchemy-Osborne/ dp/1936181169 https://www.amazon.com/Alchemys-Daughter-MaryAnn-Osborne/dp/193618124X/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?_ encoding=UTF8&qid=1482378634&sr=1-1 An excerpt from Alchemy’s Daughter, the tale of a young medieval woman who apprentices to the mysterious village midwife, a suspected witch: “The kitten was trapped,” the young midwife blurted out. “The mother cat was near death. I had no choice but to cut through the womb.” When Santina’s mentor had found her feeding her newly adopted pet out in the barn, she felt compelled to confess her secret. “Was the cat dead or were you hell-bent on doing the operation?” Trotula demanded. “No. Si! She was near lifeless,” Santina stammered, doubting the sincerity of her own words. “It’s true I wanted to learn how to do the operation,” she admitted through her tears. “Santina, I don’t have to tell you what an impulsive thing you did. You’re far from ready to take your education into your own hands. I’ve been practicing midwifery for the better part of my life. Do you suppose I learned everything there is to know in one year? Or two? For heaven’s sake, pazienza! You must have patience.”

“I’m sorry, Trotula,” Santina said, owning that she had done more than inflict a traumatic death on a feline. She had disregarded Trotula’s guidance and failed to trust her teacher. Despite all this, Santina could not let go of her ideas about the Caesarean. “I need to know what to do when a woman isn’t able to deliver,” she began, though she knew Trotula was unlikely to change her mind. “We’re midwives, Trotula. We should always know what to do. It’s our business to know, isn’t it?” “You know well enough what to do, Santina. When the time comes and an operation is called for, I’ll show you how it’s done.” Because she was afraid the time would come and Trotula would not be there, the answer did not satisfy Santina. At the risk of infuriating her mentor further, she asked, “Couldn’t we try to deliver a lamb this way?” “Have you heard nothing I’ve said, Santina?” the midwife replied, clearly exasperated with the young woman. “You’re getting too far ahead of yourself. It will get you into trouble if you’re not careful.” “But people want us to help them, Trotula. They depend on us.” “There’s a limit to what people will stand for in San Gimignano, and it’s high time you learn where the line is,” Trotula went on. “For the most part, people are indifferent to cunning folk. But they also know that our work can harm as well as heal. If they come to think we use our knowledge to purposely harm, we’ll be burned at the stake in no time.” Trotula went about purifying the barn with salt and uttering prayers to counteract the evil that had been done. “When I was a young girl, Ninetta delivered a set of twins that was fused together at the midsection. They were stillborn. People starting saying that the mother had done something to insult Ninetta before the birth and Ninetta had cast malocchio, the evil eye, on her. Everyone looked at Ninetta as though she’d caused the misfortune, and no one would call on her. We had little to eat that year,” Trotula told Santina, who did not dare interrupt. “What do you think would happen if anyone learned what you did to that cat? You’d be an accused strega, witch, in no time,” she said. “Tell no one, Santina. Nessuno. I mean no one.” Do you believe in ghosts? Maybe you should. Ursula Bielski Ursula Bielski is the founder of Chicago Hauntings, Inc. and the host of PBS’ “The Hauntings of Chicago” (WYCC). An historian, author, and parapsychologist, she has been writing and lecturing about Chicago’s supernatural folklore and the paranormal for nearly 20 years, and is recognized as a leading authority on the Chicago region’s ghostlore and cemetery history. She is the author of ten popular and critically acclaimed books on the same subjects including the Chicago Haunts series and Graveyards of Chicago. An excerpt from the Chicago Haunts series: My paranormal life, with all its awe and impossibility, began with my earliest memory of all: waking up in my little bed sometime after midnight to the sound of ghostly footsteps on the stairs. The phenomenon was one that occurred every single night in the house on Bell Avenue, on Chicago’s northwest side, from the day my mother and father bought it until the time I began high school some fourteen years later, but it was one to which I would never grow accustomed. In fact, I know now that it was the fear of that nightly visitor that led me to a lifelong interest in the Other Side. For two years, my mom and dad slept in the formal dining room on the first floor. My older brother, Adalbert James, slept in a crib in the adjacent kitchen. During those years Chicago cops worked rotating shifts, some months from 8 am to 4 pm, some from 4 to midnight. Other months, they’d endure the first watch, from midnight until just after dawn. During the nights over the course of those years, when my father was on duty, there were times my mom would awaken in that makeshift bedroom, sure

she had heard sounds from the uninhabitable upstairs halls. Decades later, she would still recall the breathless times spent standing in the darkened kitchen alone after midnight, my brother softly breathing in his crib, as she strained, listening with every nerve, to verify some movement beyond her imagination. When the upstairs rooms were finally renovated, some three years later, the doubts she’d had about the reality of the sounds instantly dissipated. In fact, in the course of a single night, we all became believers. I don’t quite remember that very first night we slept in the upstairs rooms—my mom and dad at the top of the stairs, my brother and I at the back of the house—but my mom and dad (and even my brother) always would. The night came during my dad’s turn on the evening watch, so he returned home soon after midnight and, after my mom had fried him a plate of eggs, they climbed the stairs to bed. Sleep came quickly, but almost at once they were awakened by the sound of footfalls on the ancient oak stairs, the treads creaking in succession from foyer to landing, for all the world as if someone were stealthily making his way to the second floor from the front hall downstairs. Instinctively, my dad reached to the nightstand for his service revolver and, a moment later, swung around the door frame to confront the intruder. To his astonishment there was no one there, though, as he looked down the steps, the sound of the footfalls continued as clearly as before. After a few moments, my anxious mom called out to him. His response was: “Lory, come look at this.” And so, that night, the two stood together at the top of the hall, mesmerized by what they could hear, but neither see nor quite believe. Roused by the sound of voices and the blazing hall lights, my brother and I—just four and three years old—soon joined them. I am told that I stared for the briefest second, then at once began to cry. Molly Moynahan has three books to her credit as well as being an award winning playwright and script writer. Enjoy an excerpt from her book Stone Garden on page 46.

Molly Moynahan Molly Moynahan has been writing and teaching for more than twenty years. She is a published novelist, an award-winning playwright and scriptwriter, a columnist and blogger. She teaches writing and literacy in both high school and college and currently lives in Chicago. Moynahan is the author of three novels, Parting is All We Know of Heaven, Living in Arcadia and Stone Garden. Stone Garden, published in 2003, was chosen a Notable Book by the New York Times, a best teen read by the American Library Association and was a BOOKSENSE 76 choice. An excerpt from Stone Garden Millstone’s cliques probably seemed amorphous from the outsider’s perspective, but we knew they were clearly delineated, enclosed worlds. My group was the hippieenvironmentalist- rebel-art clique. We didn’t do a thing together, but when times grew difficult we’d pull on black armbands, stage a guerrilla theater protest in the front hall, or simply leave school for the woods, where we sometimes dropped acid or smoked dope but mostly sat around talking about how much we pitied our parents and hated high school. There were the preps-deck shoes, corduroy pants, Fair Isle sweaters for the girls with thin gold chains and stud gold earrings, oxford cotton shirts for the boys, no socks. The preps liked folky art rock and had parties at the country club. Their sports were field hockey, ice hockey, soccer and lacrosse. They were intolerant of any deviation from what they considered “tradition,” drank prodigiously, and acted middle-aged. The socialites wore Lilly Pulitzer prints and carried baskets for purses. There were no boys in this group. I don’t think they actually had any philosophy. It was mainly a fashion choice.

The kids who didn’t live in the area were bused in from Trenton, and their clique was born from exclusion. Whenever there was an assembly on diversity, they ended up on stage dressed in FUBU looking bored. They used bad grammar, and they were usually cheerful and friendly. All the black kids were in this group, the kids from mixed marriages, and one boy from Ecuador who was rich but ended up there by default. Peter Wong didn’t belong in that group either, but being Chinese he was considered difficult to absorb, so they let him hang around even though he had no street cred and he was always winning awards for being a math genius. The politicians ran the school, dressed like bankers in straight skirts, wool pants, ironed shirts, and sometimes jackets. They frequently participated in junior versions of adult institutions like the United Nations and the Supreme Court. All the members of the debating club came from this group, and they sat together at lunch having staged arguments. They followed Duncan Farley around like ducklings and they made all the announcements in the morning over the P.A. The politicians were sort of our enemies. The antisocial stance of our clique was an affront to their involved, get-with-theprogram attitude. It’s not like we were lazy but we didn’t think high school was the place to make a major impact. I considered it a staging area, a place where you gathered information. Then there were kids like Sigrid who had no group, undocumented migrant worker kids who drifted the halls in search of sanctuary. They were dressed like children by their unobservant parents, they did their homework, and they never spoke in class or homeroom unless called upon.
