restaurant guide 2008 W

ITH or without a credit crunch, eating out has never been so popular. North Wales is blessed with some of the best eating establishments set among the most wonderful scenery in the world. Whether you prefer a country stroll followed by traditional Welsh grub in a village pub, or cuisine in a swish metropolitan-style restaurant, there truly is something for

everyone.Trouble is, where to eat? Many of us have our favourite haunts, but are constantly looking to try somewhere new. We hope this Daily Post Restaurant Guide 2008 will help you make that choice. A generation ago, eating out was reserved for a special occasion and choices were limited to traditional Welsh cooking and the ubiquitous pub fayre. While the best of Welsh food is still a delicious part of the culinary scene, today North Wales is home to Michelin-rated

restaurants and top chefs from all over the globe. And many of these inspiring culinary experiences are captured in this guide. While we have endeavoured to make this collect-and-keep supplement as comprehensive as possible, restaurants are opening and closing across our region every week. Inevitably there will be some restaurants we have missed out. If you own a restaurant, or indeed enjoy

eating in a restaurant we have not featured, please inform us so we can update our listings for next time. E-mail details to letterswales@dailypost.co.uk Also, many restaurants regularly alter their offerings and opening times – so please make sure you telephone to book in advance to avoid disappointment. We hope you enjoy exploring the restaurants in our guide as much as we enjoyed compiling it. Bon appetit!

Station Road, Deganwy LL31 9DF Tel: 01492 583801 Category: Thai Opening hours: noon-2.30pm (except Sunday) and 6pm onwards, closed Tuesdays This smart yet intimate oriental restaurant is popular with those who like variety. Here, chefs all the way from Thailand prepare the food from scratch with some very tasty results. If you thought Thai food was just a variation on Chinese, only spicier, you’re under a misapprehension. Thai food differs from Chinese quite fundamentally, the dishes are prepared using fresh chopped herbs not spices. And although some dishes are hot, many are not. Here at the Wild Orchid, there is something to suit all tastes including vegetarian.

Look out for the specials board – where dishes such as sea bass with fresh asparagus served in prawn and chive sauce, or wild fillet of beef in a pesto sauce served with parsnip crisps are very likely to turn up. It’s a nice twist on Welsh fare, with ingredients sourced locally and everything cooked in-house. An extensive menu, with dishes starting at reasonable prices is available and, if you want to visit but don’t fancy the trip home, the owners have bought next door and now offer seven bedrooms in their little hotel. You’ll have to book, the standard of cuisine and accommodation mean they’re full up more often than not. Reputation tells every time.
