Still worth going to work on an egg

gg consumption continues to rise in Britain: every year the country’s 64m inhabitants each get through an astonishing
182 of them. Meeting this demand are 33m laying hens, half in enriched cages and half on free range units. Despite the rising cost of inputs, and a concerns surrounding oversupply, poultry enterprises remain an attractive proposition for farmers, especially as they can dovetail quite easily with existing on-farm activities. A recent Farming Connect event in Mid Wales heard how, through good husbandry, a margin of £4.33 per bird can be achieved. For free range egg production, there are two options for farmers – either as a small scale enterprise, supplying directly to the local market, or contract production, selling ungraded eggs to a packer. For the latter, sheds housing 16,000 birds are the most common. Built with either single or multi-tier systems, and housing birds from 16 weeks up to 72-80 weeks, this enables an outdoor stocking density of 2,000 hens per hectare. However farmers should be prepared for regular audits, said Jason gittins, senior poultry specialist at ADAS. “This venture requires considerable capital investment but, if managed

correctly, it can provide a steady income – and a cheap fertiliser source in the form of poultry litter,” he said. If not layers, then broiler units are also worth considering, especially if space is limited: typically, 90% of chickens produced in the UK are in housed units. The UK is 80% self-sufficient in poultry meat but the country exports chicken legs and imports chicken breast to meet consumer demand. A typical broiler shed holds up to 50,000 birds from a day old to slaughter at 33-42 days. “A margin of 16.9p per bird is achievable,” said Jason. Turkey production can also provide comfortable profit margins, he added. It is considered a seasonal market but existing sheds can be used as housing, with minimal changes needed.

Intelligent design and robust construction makes the Logic Contact 2000 weed wiper a safe, environmentally responsible and cost effective method of controlling weeds such as nettle, thistle, rush, bracken etc. By applying chemical only to the tall target plants, leaving the grass (and most importantly any clover present) unaffected, Contact 2000 is able to deliver excellent results using only a fraction of the chemical required for spraying of the same area. With a standard single unit width of 2.5m Contact 2000 can cover approx. 1 acre per hour for every 1mph of forward speed up to a recommended maximum forward speed of 7mph. Where higher work rates are required or larger areas are to be treated, the 2.5m units can be used in 2 or 3 gang formations to cover up to 7.5m. These used behind more powerful ATVs or larger off road vehicles cover up to 20 acres (8Ha) per hour on flat ground and up to 12 acres (4.8Ha) per hour on difficult terrain. Wheels mounted inboard result in a relatively narrow overall width allowing for access through the smaller 10’ gateways typical in upland areas.

FARMERS URGED TO USE FUEL ADDITIVE TO IMPROVE ENGINE EFFICIENCY Oil 4 Wales is urging farmers to use fuel additives to ensure their vehicle engines run efficiently. Oil 4 Wales advises all farmers to use Exocet Gas Oil Extra. This fuel additive should be routinely used to avoid water pick-up, rough running and protection for critical components in tanks such as pumps and injectors. Oil 4 Wales was recently announced as the only Welsh oil distributor to have its fuel accredited by the FPS (Federation of Petroleum Suppliers) giving customers’ peace of mind that what it is supplying is the best in the market. Colin Owens, managing director of Oil 4 Wales, said: “For farmers, using high quality fuel and adding Exocet Gas Oil Extra is essential to maintain and ensure engine effectiveness. As the gas oil pool is now very varied, highly co-mingled and contains increasing quantities of imported product, it is great for our customers to know that our fuel has been accredited by the FPS for its high quality.” Oil 4 Wales was set up in 2010 by entrepreneur Colin Owens. The company supplies over 38,000 customers in Wales and has depots in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Milford Haven, Felinfach, Carmarthen and Cardiff and planning permission has been granted for a further depot in Mid Wales.
