Paris by Eurostar Selected departures April to November 2011 Paris was, is and always will be somewhere rather special. Why not try it with this superb four-day holiday. This inexhaustible city has something for everyone – whatever your taste. It is everything you imagine it to be, romantic, inspiring, vibrant even outrageous, but best of all Paris is unique. You will stay in a centrally located hotel, well situated for all the sights and have a wealth of visits and excursions included in the price.

Day Two After breakfast you embark on a sightseeing tour of prime Paris attractions, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, L’Arc de Triomphe and a whole list of other major sites. In the afternoon your tour takes in the epitome of pre- Revolutionary opulence, the magnificent Palace at Versailles. Surrounded by fantastic gardens and a typically provincial town, Versailles perhaps illustrates why French peasants revolted against the Aristocracy. During the evening enjoy a classic, illuminated tour of Paris, one of the great sights.

Day Two Awake and enjoy a sumptuous breakfast as the delights of this river cruise unveil with the rolling hills of the Rhine Valley drifting silently by. The pretty waterfronts of riverside towns come into view and the first of the Rhine’s vineyards shimmer in the morning sun as we glide gently into our mooring to visit picturesque Koblenz, beautifully located at the confluence of the Rhine and its sister, the Moselle. Spend your free afternoon wandering ashore where you can explore the many medieval buildings, housing a fine array of traditional shops and classic Rhineland cafés. If you manage to resist the luscious cakes on offer, you’ll be ready for your meticulously prepared dinner on board the ship, and afterwards, perhaps, shed some calories with a quiet stroll along the riverside promenade. Day Three This morning, we explore the most famous of all the river’s reaches, the dramatic Rhine Gorge: steep vineyards give way to almost vertical rocky outcrops, towering 1,000 feet above the sweeping valley sides. Sailing past St Goar and the many ruined castles, you feel the myths of this historic river coming to life, enveloping you. No legend is more famous than that surrounding the Loreley rock, where beautiful nymphs distracted hapless sailors, luring them to their deaths in the treacherous waters. After lunch we berth near Rudesheim leaving you free to relax and take a quiet

stroll through the vineyards or maybe a cable car ride to the great statue of Germania, strikingly overlooking the river’s exit from the gorge. After dinner this evening, why not end the day with a small Asbach – the brandy distilled in Rudesheim. Day Four Continuing upstream, the Rhine is slower and Oxbow lakes, long deserted by the river flow, provide a haven for over a hundred species of bird life in one of Germany’s largest nature reserves. Today you visit delightfully medieval Speyer. During the 16th century in nearby Worms, Martin Luther was declared an outlaw for his religious beliefs and banished from the Holy Roman Empire. His followers in Speyer protested, and the word ‘Protestant’ came into being. You visit the neo-Gothic Gedachtniskirche, built to commemorate this event, and the huge, richly decorated cathedral, one of the finest Romanesque buildings in existence which, when it was built, was widely acclaimed as one of the finest in Christendom. You also have free time to explore as you wish, before rejoining the ship. Day Five We arrive in France and Strasbourg, capital of the Alsace region, now one of the centres of the European Union. This afternoon we enjoy a walking tour of this unique and picturesque 16th century town, bisected by canals and a maze of narrow streets lined with timberframed houses plus the superb cathedral. Don’t be surprised if, as the shadows lengthen, you’re tempted to linger a while in a typical Alsatian café to sample some of the world famous wine for which the region is rightly renowned – maybe a Riesling or the

Day Four Today take the short journey, with a long list of memories, to the station for your early afternoon Eurostar service back to London St Pancras International and Ebbsfleet International.

Four and Five-Star River Cruising Selected departures from June to October 2011 There are many vessels cruising European rivers but few ships can match the luxury and elegance of the four-star superior Serenade 2 or the five-star Swiss Corona, boasting superb cuisine and the most comfortable surroundings possible. We offer a choice of five stunningly beautiful and fascinating cruises visiting some wonderful sights such as Cologne, the Rhine Gorge, Trier, Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Basel, Lucerne, Vienna and Budapest. See vineyards, monasteries, medieval towns, breathtaking Alsace and the Black Forest, absorb yourself in the history of Gutenberg, plus experience stunning scenery with enchanting castles on virtually every riverbend. Fully escorted price includes: • Return rail connections on selected dates from Liverpool, Chester & Crewe • Standard class reserved seat on Eurostar from London St Pancras or flight from Manchester (at a supplement) • Beautifully appointed four-star superior or five-star cabins with hotel standard beds, private bathrooms and river views • Exceptional cuisine with full board throughout

EXAMPLE ITINERARY Day One You take a late morning Eurostar from London St. Pancras International arriving in Brussels, 1 hr. 50 minutes later, where a coach will take you to your choice of ship, moored in Cologne’s picturesque historic centre.

Day Three Visit picturesque Montmartre, Paris at its Bohemian best and one of the city’s most atmospheric districts, home to the artists and street entertainers for which the capital is famous. See the houses of Vincent van Gogh and Renoir, Moulin Rouge and the only vineyard in the city. Later in the afternoon and the evening, you will have free time in which to explore more of this extraordinary city and its attractions. Walk the Champs Elysees, the widest and most prestigious avenue in the city or perhaps take a stroll around Notre Dame. Maybe take an idyllic cruise down the Seine, gliding under the many bridges that cross this artery running through the heart of Paris.

particular speciality of Alsace, the spicy Gewurztraminer. This evening the ‘Captain’s Dinner’ will take place on board, serving delicious specialities of the countries and regions visited during our cruise. Day Six Your final day’s cruising is spent gliding majestically between the ancient forested outcrops of the Vosges and the Black Forest, through the Rhine rift valley, formed millennia ago by massive geological forces. Our first visit is to the ancient town of Breisach, whose historic heart is surrounded by immense stone ramparts. This afternoon we drive through some of central Europe’s most stunning scenery. Rugged valleys of white-water rivers and cascading waterfalls abound. Rolling hillsides covered with huge, densely packed pine trees. This is the Black Forest at its best, exactly as you expect it to be. We visit the archetypical town of Titisee, nestling on the shores of its crystal clear lake. On rejoining the ship, we enjoy the evening’s dinner cruise en-route to Switzerland and our next mooring at Basel. Day Seven For many today will be the highlight of the cruise. First we take the short drive to Lucerne, by far Switzerland’s most beautiful city, attracting well-heeled visitors for two centuries. The scenery becomes ever more dramatic, as we enter the Bernese Oberland, in central Switzerland, it becomes quite literally breathtaking! This is the Alpine heart of Europe, amongst the finest mountain scenery on earth. We have a short stop in Interlaken, wonderfully situated between two shimmering lakes, whilst on the opposite bank, the snow-capped Jungfrau, punctures the sky. We then

pass through the superb Lauterbrunnen valley to Grindelwald, a simply stunning village in an amazing location, nestling below the north face of the Eiger whose sheer cliffs have challenged climbers for centuries This is Switzerland at its very best. Day One Fly to Milan and you will be taken to your hotel, the four-star, 19th century Grand Hotel in delightful Cadenabbia. It enjoys a prime position on the lakeside, dates back to 1820, has long welcomed the rich and famous including Queen Victoria, and exudes historic elegance. All rooms are air-conditioned and the swimming pool is open during the summer months, weather permitting. The restaurant enjoys stunning panoramic views over the crystal-clear lake, with an al fresco terrace. Day Two The delights of Lake Como are many, and this morning you take a private boat and tour the beautiful 18th century Villa del Balbianello. One of Lake Como’s finest villas, it features a renowned collection of art and historic furniture including an oak bureau from Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory. The gardens are a stunning series of manicured terraces full of fragrant roses and colourful borders, dominated by a classic three-arched ‘loggia’, with everything using the rugged topography to great effect. This afternoon, you are at your leisure to explore.

Pompeii, Capri & the Bay of Naples Selected departures June to October 2011 The Sorrento peninsula and the Bay of Naples is simply one of the most beautiful corners of Europe, attracting visitors for centuries in search of its outstanding scenery, tranquillity and some of the most wondrous ‘sights’ from throughout history. Add the excellent food and wine, plus the Italians themselves with their legendary love of life and you have all the ingredients for a wonderful tour. Fully escorted price includes: • Return flights to Naples from Manchester • Seven nights half-board accommodation in a choice of excellent quality three or four-star hotels in Sorrento • Guided tour of stunning Pompeii – a city preserved in time • Visit to the magnificent volcano of Vesuvius • Tour of the Amalfi Coast – one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world • Cruise to the stunning island of Capri • Visit to Naples, with its archaeological museum • Visit to hill top Ravello • Tours and visits worth over £160 • Services of an experienced tour manager

Day Three Today we enjoy a day of spectacular scenery and extraordinary Swiss engineering. Firstly, we ascend the Valtellina, a classic alpine valley with soaring peaks rising to Tirano. Here, we board the famous Bernina Express, one of the world’s slowest ‘express’ trains, but one of its greatest rail journeys. It twists upwards in an amazing sequence of spirals, loops and tunnels to the summit at Ospizio Bernina, affording stunning vistas over snow-clad peaks and glacial lakes. We descend through pretty pastures and dense pine forests to the ostentatiously chic resort of St Moritz, where there’s time for a spot of shopping or perhaps afternoon tea and cake. Day Four After breakfast we visit the historic town of Bergamo, arguably the most beautiful town in northern Italy. Strikingly crowning a hill, it was ruled for centuries by Venice, when much of the graceful city we admire today was built. Centred around the Piazza Vecchia, its harmonious main square is a wonderful collection of century’s old medieval buildings. There will be a guided tour of the old town followed by some free time to explore as you wish. For art lovers, a short distance Day One Flight to Naples. A coach will take you to your hotel where you also have dinner. Choose from the Villa Maria, a fine three-star modern hotel, tastefully decorated and in an excellent central situation. Fully air-conditioned, it has a restaurant and pool. Alternatively, opt for the three-star rated La Badia, a small, family-run hotel which has been sympathetically converted from a 16th century abbey with much of the original stonework retained, providing a superb ambience. All rooms are tastefully furnished with private bathrooms, TV and air conditioning. Its location is excellent, just behind Sorrento, with amazing views of the sea, Sorrento itself, Vesuvius and Naples on a clear day. It has its own lovely gardens and lies two miles from Sorrento by road although there is also a more direct 400 metre pathway which, although steep and narrow, is illuminated at night. You can book a free shuttle with your tour manager or use the local bus, which stops just outside. In addition to a swimming pool, the hotel also has a first-rate restaurant where, weather permitting, you may dine on the terrace overlooking the bay. Finally, you can stay in the four-star hotel Conca Park set in central Sorrento in its own landscaped grounds. Built on a slight rise, the hotel boasts sea views and a good range of facilities, including two pools, restaurant and bars and is surrounded by olive trees giving welcome shade. All swimming pools are open during the summer months, weather permitting.

from the old town, you may visit the highly acclaimed Galleria dell’Accademia, displaying masterpieces by Canaletto, Holbein, Velazquez and Botticelli. Day Five Today we visit nearby Lake Maggiore, and its most attractive resort, Stresa. This stunning town owes its origins to the days of the ‘Grand Tour’, when Europe’s 19th century aristocracy, having crossed the border from Switzerland experienced their first taste of Italy. Unmistakeable Mediterranean in character, its shores, lined with oleanders and palms, backed by classic belle époque hotels create an ambience of classic gentility. You can also take the short boat trip to Isola Bella, transformed by a 17th century Count, from a barren rock into an amazing terraced garden, admired by Queen Caroline of England, wife of George IV, and Napoleon and Josephine. Day Six Today we travel to Lugano seized by the Swiss in 1512. It has since steadfastly refused any opportunity to revert to Italy. A fascinating eclectic mix of traditional Swiss values and more laid-back Latin influences from across the border. The trains run on time and shops are just as chic, but there’s a distinctive Mediterranean feel unlike anything you’ll experience elsewhere in Switzerland. Tiny alleyways lead to unmistakably Italian piazzas, where you can relax over a typically Italian lunch, but like anywhere in Switzerland, the traffic laws are obeyed without question. Day Seven This morning we enjoy a relaxing boat trip across the shimmering lake to elegant Bellagio; with its idyllic location, it is often described as the most beautiful town in Italy. Once the haunt of monarchs, today the lake is lined by attractive, pastel-coloured buildings, faded by decades of sunshine and narrow cobbled streets climb their way to the hilly centre. Awash with colourful flowers, Bellagio cannot be bettered for a long, lazy lunch in one of the many restaurants; followed by a stroll perhaps among the many typically formal, sculpture-studded gardens so beloved of romantics over the centuries. Day Eight We return to the airport at the appropriate time for our return flight. living. You also visit Vesuvius, which affords panoramic views of the area. Day Five A free day to explore Sorrento at your leisure. Day Six This morning, you drive to Naples and enjoy a short panoramic tour seeing the principal monuments before a visit to the Archaeological Museum, housing some of the greatest discoveries from Pompeii and Herculaneum. There is a remarkable display of mosaics, giving a superb insight into the way of life and the sense of humour of the ordinary Roman. Day Seven After breakfast you visit the Amalfi coast, which claims to be Europe’s most beautiful which it is difficult to dispute. You see Positano, Amalfi and the stunning medieval village of Ravello, full of tiny gardens, statues and narrow streets – the setting for Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ and now the haunt of countless celebrities. Day Eight You return to the airport for your flight home.

Day Two A rather lazy day today, with a guided walk around Sorrento during the morning and the afternoon free to explore as you wish. Day Three Capri has long been the most sought-after part of the Bay of Naples owing to its outstanding natural beauty. So, this morning you take the short boat trip to the island and see why it is so adored. You can see the famous Blue Grotto, explore the shops, take a stroll along the busy quayside or perhaps have a long lunch. Day Four Today it’s Pompeii, the story of which you all know, and whose state of preservation is astonishing. Much of our knowledge of the way of life of the ordinary Roman has come from here, and on your tour you will be surprised at the evident high standard of

Cinque Terre, Portofino & the Italian Lakes 6 June & 3 October 2011 Our new Italian holiday takes you to the millionaires’ haunts of Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure and the spectacular landscapes of the Cinque Terre and Lake Maggiore, perhaps the most impressive of Italy’s sparkling lakes. Along the way you will travel on the picturesque ‘Three Valleys Railway’ into the heart of Columbus’ maritime city of Genoa, and visit Pavia, a medieval city with a

Visconti castle, and whose cathedral boasts one of Italy’s largest domes. While in Santa Margherita, you will enjoy a boat trip to Portofino and a train journey through the Cinque Terre. PROGRAMME Day One: Direct flight to Milan, transfer to your hotel on Lake Maggiore for two nights half board accommodation. Day Two: Free day to explore Lake Maggiore. Why not take a boat trip on the lake?

Day Three: Today you travel south to the Riviera di Levante. Your first stop is Vercelli, an historic town surrounded by paddy-fields (its rice is exported worldwide). You then continue south to Casella, north of Genoa, arriving after lunch to board the ‘Three Valleys Train’. Since 1929 the red and white carriages of this narrow gauge service has linked Columbus’ home city with the villages and valleys of its hinterland. In Genoa you will see something of the restored port and old city centre before you complete your journey

Krakow, Zakopane & The High Tatras 5, 28 June, 4, 20 September 2011 Two of Poland’s most spectacular sites, Krakow and Zakopane, are brought together in this fascinating holiday of contrasts. The medieval university city of Krakow, for centuries Poland’s capital and home town of Pope John Paul II, is combined with Zakopane, Poland’s highest city, set amidst the spectacular Tatra Mountains.

PROGRAMME Day One: Direct flight to Krakow, short transfer to your hotel in Krakow for three nights bed and breakfast accommodation. Days Two and Three: Free in Krakow with an included half-day walking tour. Krakow is a very special place to visit. With over a thousand years of history, it is Poland’s cultural capital and is, of course, on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In the Middle Ages, Krakow’s walls had 55 defensive towers. The 14th

century main gate survives and is the starting point of the ‘Royal Road’, which ends at Wawel Castle, and passes by the Town Square, St. Mary’s Basilica and the Czartoryski Museum. They claim the museum contains fragments from the grave of Romeo and Juliet, as well as the chair Shakespeare sat on to write about them! Krakow is also a university city – the Jagiellonian, one of Europe’s oldest, dates from 1364 and boasts many illustrious alumni including Karol Józef Wojtyła – better known to us as Pope John

by coach to the chic resort of Santa Margherita Ligure, where you spend four nights on a half board basis. Days Four to Six: In Santa Margherita with included excursions by boat to Portofino and by train to the Spectacular Cinque Terre. Portofino: like the millionaires, you travel to the world’s most beautiful harbour by boat (15 minute trip). Portofino’s colourful hotchpotch of fishermen’s houses embraces its harbour and the luxury craft of the nearby villa-owners – Portofino is the select retreat of Italy’s powerful! Above the harbour is Brown’s Castle, and there are good views from the church. You can see why Disney copied it – the original is stunning! Cinque Terre: the spectacular coastline, hills and villages landscapes of the Cinque Terre are UNESCO listed and within the National Park, where the mountains drop almost vertically into the sea. The ‘Five Lands’ are about an hour away, and comprise the unspoilt traffic-free villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, which nestle in tiny coves, set below the ingeniously terraced vineyards that, together with the fishing, gave the area its livelihood. Day Seven: You leave Santa Margherita and travel north, following

Paul II. You can also join an optional excursion to nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz. Day Four: Today you travel to Zakopane. It may only be 63 miles from Krakow by road, but you spend 2-3 hours rafting gently through the stunning scenery of the Dunajec River Gorge, in the Pieninski National Park. Two hours from Krakow lies the village of Sromowce, on the Slovakian border, where you embark your rafts, which are operated by experienced raftsmen wearing traditional local costume. The gentle Dunajec River offers sightseeing as you go – you will see the 13th century Red Monastery and the gorge itself, with its spectacular limestone cliffs and rock formations. You disembark in the spa town of Szczawnica, and after some free time, continue to Zakopane, arriving late afternoon for four nights bed and breakfast accommodation. Days Five to Seven: Free in Zakopane, with an included walking tour. Zakopane lies in the heart of the Tatra Mountains, a mountain range that many people believe to be among the most beautiful in the world. The scenery is spectacular and the mountains impressive – they were shaped by glacial erosion, which helps to explain the magnificent peaks, lakes and valleys.

a slightly different route to take in the cathedral city of Pavia. Carcassonne, Cathar Country & Catalonia May, June, Sep & Oct 2011 The ramparts of Carcassonne, the mystery of Rennes-le-Château, the surrealism of Dalì’s Theatre Museum, combined with a visit to modernist Barcelona, and stays in unspoilt locations on the Catalan coast and in a pleasant spa town in the hills of Roussillon – this is a holiday to one of the most scenic parts of the Mediterranean. The area is also fabulously rich in history, legend and

Day Three: Today you depart for France. En route you will stop in Dalì’s home town of Figueras with its surreal (in the truest sense!) theatre-museum (entrance included). Corsica, Elba & the Tuscan Coast 7, 16 June, 1, 13 September 2011 Jean-Jacques Rousseau once remarked of Corsica that ‘One day this little island will astonish Europe.’ We are sure that it, and this unusual holiday, will astonish you too! L’Île de Beauté – the island of beauty, and ‘kalliste’ – ancient Greek for ‘the most beautiful’ are just two of the countless epithets that have been bestowed upon Corsica. It is also called the ‘mountain in the sea’ – its

steep peaks and valleys drop rapidly into the azure Mediterranean. After your exploration of Corsica we also stay on the Tuscan coast, with an included visit to Elba – to where the most famous of all Corsicans, Napoleon, was exiled before he met his…Waterloo! PROGRAMME Day One: Direct flight to Pisa and short transfer to your hotel in Livorno for one night bed and breakfast accommodation.

Day Two: Ferry sailing from Livorno to Bastia. On arrival, we continue to the university town of Corte, briefly the capital of an independent Corsica. The town, set in the mountainous centre of the island, is fiercely proud of its historical contribution to creating Corsica as a ‘nation’. Just above the main street stands the mighty Citadel, a Genoese fortress once used as a base for the French Foreign Legion, which nowadays houses the new, impressive ‘Museum of Corsica’.

les-Bains, for four nights half board accommodation. Day Four: Full-day included excursion to Carcassonne and Rennes-le- Château. Although a longish day, it is packed with interest. You start with a scenic drive past two spectacular Cathar castles – Puilaurens, perched high above the valley, and Quéribus, whose rocky spur saw the last stand of the Cathars in 1255. In Rennes-le-Château you will see the church, presbytery, villa, tower and grounds built by the priest, Abbé Sauniere, at the end of the 19th century. You will discover the true extent of the mystery that has spawned so many books and several tv programmes. You will not be the first to try and solve the mystery – a byelaw had to be passed to stop unauthorised digging in the village by treasurehunters! You continue to Carcassonne for lunch (not included), and a free afternoon in the most spectacular walled city on earth. A UNESCO Heritage site, the cité is a remarkable defensive structure with barbican, dry moat, outer and inner walls, inaccessible watch-towers, posterns, loopholes and arrow slits. Days Five and Six: Free to explore the spa town of Amelie-les-Bains in the scenic Vallespir Valley surrounded by pleasant mountain scenery. You may also choose to join our optional Day Three: Free to relax and explore Corte or join an optional excursion to Corsica’s capital city Ajaccio, a pleasant city and the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Day Four: Leave Corte and head towards the North Coast. We make a stop in Ile Rousse – the ‘Red Island’ is now connected to the town by a bridge. We then continue north into Cap Corse, for three nights in Macinaggio, a pleasant fishing village (home to ‘gin palaces’ as well as more traditional craft!) with a good selection of bars, restaurants and shops. Day Five and Six: Free to discover the port, beaches and centre of Macinaggio. Optional excursions are available to Bastia, with its pleasant old quarter around the citadel, and a circular trip around spectacular coastline and impressive watch towers of Cap Corse. Day Seven: Today we head for the return ferry crossing back to Italy, and three nights half board accommodation in Antignano. Although Antignano is a quiet spot (the ideal place to relax right by the sea!), there are local trains to Livorno, Pisa and Florence. There are also buses to Livorno from near the hotel – Antignano train station is half a mile away.

excursions to the walled village of Prats de Mollo on the side of Mount Canigou and to nearby Perpignan, the capital of the Roussillon, and to the artists’ resort of Collioure. Day Seven: Today you return to the Costa Dorada for your last night, again on a half board basis. En route there is a short tour of, and free time to explore, the exciting city of Barcelona, capital of Catalonia. Day Eight: Free time until your transfer to the airport for your return flight. PRICE INCLUDES • Return direct flights from Liverpool & Manchester • 3 nights HB at the 4H Hotel Marvel in Coma-Ruga on the Catalan Coast • 4 nights HB at the 3H Hotel De la Reine Amelie in Amelie-les-Bains • Full day excursion to Carcassonne and Rennes-leChateau • Visit to Barcelona and the Dali museum at Figueras • Services of a tour representative A walking holiday featuring this area and hotels is also available – please ask for a brochure for more details. Days Eight and Nine: Free to relax on the coast with an included full day excursion to Elba. We travel to Piombino for the short crossing to Portoferraio, visited by Jason in his legendary search for the Golden Fleece. We also see Marina di Campo. Day Ten: Free time until your transfer to the airport and return flight to the UK. PRICE INCLUDES • Return direct flights from Manchester • Return ferry crossing to Corsica • 1 night B&B at the 4H Hotel Gran Duca in Livorno • 2 nights HB at the 2H Hotel de la Paix in Corte • 3 nights HB at the 3H Hotel U Ricordu in Cap Corse • 3 nights HB in the 4H Hotel Rex in Antignano • Excursion to the Island of Elba • Services of a tour representative
