Community Care WHY NIC? Gain the practical experience and employer connections to care for children, students and adults in BC. Work experience Take part in practicums with local employers to gain practical, firsthand training and experience as well as the professional connections and confidence to succeed in your career.

Community involvement Human Services students participate in community-based partnerships and volunteer at local events to gain hands on experience and learn about local and global issues.

Industry connections NIC works closely with community agencies as well as industry and government associations to ensure coursework is relevant, comprehensive and valued by employers.

Each year, NIC human services students take part in an interactive, experiential Village Workshop at the K’omoks Big House, developing critical thinking skills and intercultural awareness crucial to their future careers.

You need: Eng 12 C+, Requisite Skills & Abilities document You’ll learn: Make a difference in the lives of young children by providing quality care and education for healthy early development. Take the first step toward your BC Early Childhood Educator certification, applying theory to practice in a variety of learning settings.

You need: Eng 12 C+, 20 hours volunteer experience and professional reference form, 300-word letter of intent and Requisite Skills & Abilities document You’ll learn: Prepare to provide support to individuals with a broad range of disabilities in the classroom and in the community. Learn intercultural communication skills and understand contemporary Canadian social and family issues through practical training and weekly seminars.

Keep studying: Earn transfer credit toward an Early Childhood Care and Education Diploma at colleges across BC. Start working: Work as an early childhood educator in preschools, childcare centres and out of school care programs. Facilitate community early learning programs such as Strong Start at child and family serving agencies.

Keep studying: Earn credit toward NIC’s Human Services Diploma. Start working: Qualify for a career as an education assistant providing classroom support or as a support worker in group home, employment agencies, community organizations and other human service agencies.
