SARAH, WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BRAVE THE SHAVE?

MacMillan has really helped and supported my friends and family over the years. Recently, a close friend’s husband was diagnosed with cancer, and I was inspired to raise money for a worthwhile cause.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE TO BRAVE THE SHAVE AT WORK?

My colleagues have known that I’ve wanted to do this for some time, and to help me reach my fundraising goals, they even held a Halloween Bake Sale and Fancy-Dress event on the day of my shave.

HOW NERVOUS WERE YOU WHEN IT WAS TIME TO BRAVE THE SHAVE? Honestly, I was terrified, but everyone was so kind and supportive. To keep my nerves at bay, I focussed on work right up until the shave. I remember being shocked that the whole office had come to see the shave. My wonderful colleague Sally Hollis and Tracey Bane even helped to shave my head.

It was such an emotional experience, and I cried when I started to see my hair fall into my lap, but throughout, I focussed on why I was doing it.

HOW DID YOU FEEL AFTERWARDS?

I felt proud and privileged that I could raise so much money in the current economic climate. I’m so grateful to all my colleagues for their support during and after the event.

FINALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE THINKING OF DOING THEIR OWN BRAVE THE SHAVE? Definitely do it, as it’s for such a great cause. People tend to forget how much support MacMillan nurses give to those affected by cancer.
