Armenian Genocide Committee Announces April 24 March for Justice in LA LOS ANGELES—The Armenian Genocide Committee calls upon all segments of our community to join together in a MARCH FOR JUSTICE on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 12pm from the Pan Pacific Park to the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles as we continue to fight for justice and against the denial of the Armenian Genocide. Los Angeles (KABC) Current Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti declared reelection victory at a rally just two hours after polls closed to Los Angeles city and Los Angeles County residents on election night. Supporters were waiting for Garcetti to make a statement at his event at the Laborers' Local 300 Union headquarters in the PicoUnion area of Los Angeles. Many were hoping he would confirm a victory and declare L.A. a sanctuary city. Garcetti faced 10 challengers in the mayoral race. Some of his opponents argue that he has not done enough to combat crime and homelessness. Others fear that he has his sights set on higher public office and would leave his mayoral post to pursue such an ambition. Garcetti has touted accomplishments that have occurred since he won his first term in 2013, including supporting a minimum wage hike, helping the economy by lowering the business tax, encouraging the

At the meeting, President Sargsyan noted that in the cooperation with Francophonie, Armenia has never ceased exerting efforts towards promoting the organization’s values and disseminating French. Apart from this, thanks to the support of the OIF, a complete education cycle starting from kindergarten to university operates in Armenia. According to the President, the cooperation with the organization has not only contributed to the dissemination of the French language and culture in Armenia, but also served as a platform for strengthening the bilateral ties with the member and observer states and expanding international cooperation. In this context, Sargsyan stressed the role of holding the 31st Ministerial Conference of the OIF in Armenia in 2015.

Mr Vartan Ouzounian, a prominent benefactor, a member of the Armenian community in the UK, has been awarded the Komitas medal by the RA Ministry of Diaspora for many years of service to the Armenian nation and for promoting Armenian culture in the Diaspora. The award took place at the Copthorne Tara Hotel in London on February 12, 2017 in the presence of the Right Revd Bishop Hovakim Manukyan, Primate and Pontifical Legate, and Mr Armen Liloyan, Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the UK and Northern Ireland, as well as extensive number of Armenian and British honourary guests. Miss Seza Ouzounian, the Master of ceremony, opened the function with a brief welcoming speech, and then the national anthems of Armenia and Great Britain were performed. The official ceremony continued with the Chairman of the Tekeyan Trust London Mrs. Sylva Krikorian-Aharonian’s heartfelt congratulations to Mr. V. Ouzounian on the occasion the honourary medal. On behalf of the TTL Trustees, the chairman praised all the efforts and the contribution that Mr. Ouzounian had made to the

Thanks to his tireless work cultural activities expanded in Armenian communities and many significant projects came to life: cultural youth festival in Lebanon; social, cultural and sporting events in Ethiopia; painting exhibitions, lectures, Erebouni newspaper, Araks dance group and the Komitas choir in the UK, as well as performances of many prominent artists, musicians, theatrical groups, folk song and dance ensembles invited from Armenia to the UK; and finally the charity work of the Tekeyan Cente Fund which mainly focuses on schools in Armenia and Karabakh. Vartan Ouzounian remains a very active member of the social and cultural life of the UK Armenian community as well as in the homeland. He is currently Chairman of Board of Trustees of Yerevan Tekeyan Centre Fund, Honourary Secretary and Treasurer of the Tekeyan Trust London, Chairman of the Komitas Choir, Chairman of the ADLP UK branch as well as Treasurer and Central Board member of ADLP. In 2011 V. Ouzounian was honoured with the Nerses Shnorhali Medal by the Catholicos Karekin II in recognition of his services to the worldwide Armenian communities. The solemn function at the Copthorne Tara hotel continued; Deputy Ambassador Mr. Armen Liloyan delivered the congratulatory address from Ambassador Dr. Armen Sarkissian and presented Mr. Vartan Ouzounian with the honourary Komitas Medal of the RA Ministry of Diaspora. The project of Tekeyan Centre was realized due to the devotion and great efforts of Mr Ouzounian within six years. Then Miss Maral Pocock and Mr Bernard Nazarian, a Trustee of the TTL, briefly presented Mr V. Ouzounian’s 55-year activity in Lebanon, Ethiopia, the UK and Armenia. Vartan Ouzounian was born in Syria, in the family that had survived the Armenian Genocide and later settled in Beirut, Lebanon. He attended the Catholicosate of Cilicia primary school, then the AGBU’s Hovagimian-Manougian secondary school, and he got his higher education in London. Since his childhood, he was brought up and educated with Armenian spirit, patriotism and love to the national culture. At an early age he realized the importance of preserving the national identity, and since his student years he has been actively involved in the national and spiritual life of the Armenian communities in Lebanon, Ethiopia and the UK. V. Ouzounian is one of the founders of the Tekeyan Trust London (along with Mr. Garo Krikorian, Garabed Arevian and others), Tekeyan Centre (Yerevan) and the Komitas Choir (London). The Komitas Medal was a good proof of the fact that Armenia, Armenian culture and history would be everlasting thanks to devoted individuals like Vartan Ouzounian. The official ceremony was concluded with Mr. Ouzounian’s words of gratitude to the Minister of Diaspora Ms Hranush Hakobyan for recognizing his services to the Armenian communities and honouring him the Komitas Medal. He also thanked his family, co-founders (mainly Garo Krikorian and Garabed Arevian) and friends who supported his national activities over many years. The celebration continued with cultural programme which featured the impressive performances of the British Armenian mezzosoprano Ms Anais Heghoyan (who performed “Aria of Parandzem” from opera Arshak II by T.Chukhadjian and “Ardyoq ur es” by N. Kalenteryan) and soprano Mrs Tereza Gevorgyan (“Kaqavik” by Komitas and “Akh, inch lav en sari vra…” by E.Abrahamyan), accompanied by pianist Ms. Hao Zi Yoh. Oslo - A Norwegian friend of Armenia, presented his Norwegian language book, a love confession to Armenia and Armenians, to a excited audience in Oslo on March 4, 2017. Sven-Erik is an Armenia expert who has written articles and op-eds about Armenia and the Armenian genocide in national and local newspapers. He has led many public lectures about Armenia for different audiences. He has also led a tour for an enthusiastic group of Norwegian tourists. Sven-Erik Rise proudly calls himself an “Armenian-bychoice” and dreams of having an Armenian passport. The book is a breathtaking story of his love to a country and its people, presented in a most intimate, humoristic and personal manner. In the book, the author takes the reader to a tour in Armenia, where he and his Turkish friend explore the country, meet many exciting people who have many good stories to share. The author discusses the Armenian Genocide, compares with the Jewish Holocaust, analyses the denialist industry and discusses the Artsakh conflict (Nagorno Karabakh conflict). This book is a good mix of a novel and a well researched and argumented work, which makes it easy to read and gives the reader a fascinating and exciting reading experience. The introduction of the book is written by auther and veteran journalist of the state broadcaster NRK, Jahn Otto Johansen. The book has got many good reviews, among others from author and TV personality Stein Morten Lier. The master of ceremonies was Magnus Jensen. Among speakers were author and TV personality Stein Morten Lier, the leader of the Armenian Cultural Association of Norway Liana Arutyunyan, representative of the Armenian Apostolic Church Society Narine Harutyunyan and representative of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee Lene Wetteland. Half of the print copies were sold by the end of the book presentation. Armenian pastry was served during the event. Turkish language site on Armenian Genocide launched by ANI

Washington D.C. - On February 27, the Armenian National Institute (ANI) launched a Turkish-language version of its popular website documenting the facts and acknowledgments of the Armenian Genocide available at www.turkish.armeniangenocide.org. The ANI site is visited over four million times a year and the number of people accessing from Turkey is substantial. As Turkey regularly censors foreign and domestic websites and the ANI English site has been hacked by denialists, the new ANI Turkish site was designed to give access to broader Turkish-language audiences, both in the Republic of Turkey and outside. The Turkish-language site will parallel many of the most commonly used features of the ANI site. For its first phase, the Turkish site features translations of official documents from countries around the world that formally recognize the Armenian Genocide. The resolutions, laws, and declarations from countries that have historically recognized the Armenian Genocide can now be read in Turkish. They range from the May 24, 1915 Joint Allied Declaration that invoked crimes against humanity at the time the genocide was being committed to more recent parliamentary resolutions, including the 2016 German Parliament resolution that recognized the historic events and admitted German responsibility in the matter. Earlier this month the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany upheld the validity of the resolution. "The Turkish-language ANI site looks forward to contributing toward dialogue by paving one more path to a common understanding of history and by taking one more step toward a reconciliation cognizant of the consequences of the past while building forward toward a future where neighboring nations live in peace," stated ANI Chairman Van Z. Krikorian. Audiences in Turkey are also unaware of the voluminous Turkish records that confirm the facts of the Armenian Genocide. In 2004 the proceedings and legal analysis by the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), commissioned by the Turkish Armenian Reconciliation Commission, was published in Turkish and several books have appeared in print since, but there is a massive gap in resources for Turkish speakers. The ICTJ legal opinion in Turkish is available on the new website, which also includes a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section and a photographic collection. Additionally, a section for entries from the Encyclopedia of Genocide addressing several aspects of the Armenian Genocide is currently under construction. The site will have new features that will be of particular interest to Turkish readers. The Institute is looking forward to expanding the site in the same systematic manner and by the same objective standards by which the ANI site was created. "Many courageous individuals have spoken up and some brave scholars have

pioneered groundbreaking research documenting the Armenian Genocide on the basis of official Ottoman records. Despite the broad-ranging global dialogue on the historical importance and dark precedent of the Armenian Genocide, more progress in Turkey is necessary for Turks to understand and reconcile with their own real history," Krikorian added This policy continues to have serious domestic consequences. Recently Turkish parliamentarian of Armenian origin Garo Paylan was penalized with suspension from participation in three sessions of the legislature for daring to reference the consequences of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey itself. His suspension in January arrived almost to the day of the tenth anniversary of the assassination of the Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, a crime that remains in many ways unsolved. Dink's courage in raising awareness of the legacy of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey emboldened many others in the Turkish media to re-examine the issue, while it infuriated ultranationalists who took the law into their own hands. The new site also features the ANI map keyed in Turkish, and links to other popular features, such as its digital exhibits and online museum. ANI Director Dr. Rouben Adalian stated: "The Turkish site was created thanks to the support and encouragement of many contributors, including translators, consultants and web designers who helped to make this information on the Armenian Genocide accessible to readers in Turkey and elsewhere. New translations will be added very soon and we look forward to enhancing the site to reflect the vast amount of information on the Armenian Genocide already available on the ANI site."
