The Armenian American Museum Unveils Concept Design for the Downtown Glendale Site

GLENDALE— The Armenian American Museum and Cultural Center (AAM) unveiled the Concept Design of the museum for the location across from the Central Library in downtown Glendale at a gathering of more than 400 community members on Thursday, Dec. 8 at the Brandview Ballroom. The Museum envisions an iconic design that will depict the rock formations and mountain range found in Armenia. Alajajian-Marcoosi Artchitects described the design as also capturing the sensation one gets from the San Gabriel Mountains rising to the north of Glendale. Over the next two months, the Armenian American Museum will implement its outreach efforts to obtain feedback about the Concept Design. In March of this year, the Glendale City Council recommended that the Armenian American Museum consider locating the Museum and Cultural Center in what is commonly known as the Central Park Block Project area in the heart of the City near the Colorado Street and Brand Boulevard intersection. An Exclusive Negotiating Agreement was executed by the City and the AAM Governing Board in the summer to initiate the process for conducting feasibility studies, developing concept designs, and negotiating ground lease and development agreements. The City and the AAM are on schedule to complete the concept design, traffic, parking, economic, and environmental studies in time for the consideration of the ground lease agreement by the City Council during the first quarter of 2017. The Central Park Block Project envisions the construction of a new downtown public parking structure and repurposing the parking lots located to the south and east of the Central Library to recreational uses. The Concept Design calls for constructing a museum and cultural center on top of the subterranean garage.

The unveiled Concept Design demonstrates how the exhibit galleries, halls, theater, research facilities, learning center, demonstration kitchen, and archive space will connect to each other and the outdoor covered plaza. Sebastian Kurz: EU will not open new chapter in history Turkey's membership in EU The EU will not open a new chapter in the history of Turkey's membership in the EU, said the Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz at the EU Council meeting, reports TASS. "It is true that it's impossible now to go further with such a very difficult situation in Turkey ... we will say certainly that it is impossible to open new chapters for the accession process," the minister said. According to him, in order to open them, a unanimous decision is needed. However, Austria will never give a consent. The Austrian minister blocked a joint statement of the European Council on Turkey's membership.

News from TCA, West Coast By Kevork Keushkerian Aram Arkun, the Executive Director of the Tekeyan Cultural Association of the United States and Canada, was in Los Angeles for a working visit of the West Coast. Aram Arkun is a highly educated individual with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Princeton University, a Master of Arts Degree in International Relation from the University of Pennsylvania and a C. Phil. From the University of California in Los Angeles. On Wednesday afternoon, December 7, 2016, Mr. Arkun met with the extended TCA Feasibility Committee to explore the options of continuing the mission of the TCA Arshag Dickranian School, which was closed a year ago, under unfortunate circumstances. It was a very informative session, as the Committee members brainstormed on how best to come up with a solution, which meets the expectations of the stakeholders and the general public at large. The Committee was excited and decided to continue meeting, after contacting a few educational professionals, as suggested by a prominent Committee member. On Thursday evening, Mr. Arkun was invited to attend The Armenian American Museum fund raising kick off reception, held at the Brandview Ballroom in Glendale. An overview of the proposed project was shown and a call for contributions was made. The highlight of Mr. Arkun’s visit to the West Coast was his lecture on the Activities of Tekeyan Cultural Association in the Diaspora and the Motherland. This was delivered on Friday evening, December 9, 2016, at the TCA Beshgeturian Center in Altadena. He was introduced by Kevork Keushkerian. Mr. Arkun’s presentation was augmented with a slide show, depicting a picture of the founding members of Tekeyan

Cultural Association, and pictures of Tekeyan schools and centers throughout the Diaspora and the Homeland. He especially dwelled upon the projects undertaken by Tekeyan Cultural Association in Armenia and Artsakh. Concerning Tekeyan’s projects in Armenia and Artsakh, Mr. Arkun mentioned first and foremost the “Sponsor a Teacher” program, according to which a once a year monitory gift is paid to every teacher and worker in the schools, sponsored by Tekeyan Cultural Association. These are Tekeyan School in Yerevan, Tekeyan School in Gyumri, Tekeyan School in Sdepanavan, Tekeyan School in Garbi and Tekeyan School in Artsakh. Another project which has recently been created is the monetary gift paid to the families of the soldiers, who have died defending Artsakh in April of this year. Mr. Arkun pointed out that these monitory gifts are handed over by Gayane Mouradian, Tekeyan’s representative in Armenia, along with a member of Tekeyan Cultural Association’s Central Board of Trustees, if that person happens to be there on a working visit of the Homeland. A short question and answer session was held at the conclusion of the presentation, which was followed by a buffet style light dinner.

The AGBU Nubar Library launches website for its digital collection The AGBU Nubar Library in Paris is proud to announce the launch of its website, offering a wealth of information, photos and documents about Armenians in the Ottoman Empire and the Armenian diaspora. The library's collection primarily concerns the nineteenth and twentieth century and is a vital resource in the preservation of Armenian cultural heritage. The website-which will continue to be updated with digitized materials-is already home to a photo collection of prominent Armenian leaders and of Armenian life in the Ottoman Empire and early diaspora; portions of the Andonian archive of Armenian Genocide testimonies as well as portions of the archives of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Armenian National Delegation and AGBU; digitized copies of the French-language Constantinople-based journal Renaissance published from 1918-1920; a virtual tour of the exhibit Arménie 1915, held in Paris in 2015; and a digitized collection of the library's journals Revue d'histoire arménienne contemporaine and Études arméniennes contemporaines. The Nubar Library houses more than 43,000 printed works, 500,000 archival documents, 1,500 periodicals and 10,000 photos as well as hundreds of manuscripts from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. 141 - Leyla !pekçi By Hambersom Aghbashian Leyla Ipekci (born in October 13, 1966, in Istanbul ) is a Turkish journalist, screenwriter and author. After completing her secondary study at Saint Michel French High School , she continued her education and graduated from Bogazici University -Department of Sociology. She worked for Kadınca (Development publications), 1985-86 , Term Publishing, 1988, Adam monthly magazine (Sun Publications), 1989-90, also served as correspondent for Tempo weekly magazine in 1992, and worked as editorial staff for Rapsodi magazine in 1993, the editor of Aktüel magazine in 1994-95, and the general editor of Esqurie magazine in 1995. Leyla Ipekci has also published articles in Gazetepazar and became a columnist for the newspaper, and worked as a columnist for Zaman newspaper , July 2011- Dec. 2013. After leaving Zaman newspaper she continued as a columnist for Yeni Safak. Leyla !pekçi hazs published many books including "Maya", "Mayan of sinan". " The first Evil", " Fire and Garden", " 5 Times in Istanbul" and others. She received Milliyet Sanat "First Book First Edition" contest first prize in 1988 for her novel "Maya", Writers Union of Turkey's "Author of the Year" award in 2007 and "Best book of the year" award in 2011 by by ESKADER for her "Trial of the second dream". Leyla Ipekci is one of the Turkish notable intellectuals who have signed the “I Apologize Campaign” which was an initiative launched in December 2008 in Turkey by numerous journalists, writers, politicians and professors and called through a form of a signature campaign for an apology for what they considered as the “Great Catastrophe that Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915”. The message shown on the website which people had to sign stated “My conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the denial of the Great Catastrophe that the Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915. I reject this injustice and for my share, I empathize with the feelings and pain of my Armenian brothers. I apologize to them.” On Dec. 20, 2008, Today’s Zaman daily published a long article under the title (Joint committee of historians on Armenian debate) where it mentioned among other facts, the “apology” campaign, which has gathered support from many respected intellectuals, and the reactions to it have shown that there are disagreements not only between Turks and Armenians, but also among Turks concerning the incidents of 1915. There are distinguished figures both in the supporters and opponents of

this campaign. If we have a sneak preview of more than 10,000 supporters: Ali Bayramoglu, Ihsan Dagi, Cengiz Candar, Atilla Eralp, Enis Batur, Omer Laciner, Omer Marda, Leyla Ipekci, Huseyin Hatemi, Oral Calislar, Hasan Cemal and the list goes on. So many people cannot be just labeled as traitors or terrorists and ignored. A number of columnists who criticize the campaign’s wording or timing refrain from being disrespectful towards these people. (1) On April 20, 2011, " Today's Zaman " published another article concerning the Armenian Genocide where it wrote "Armenians who lost their lives in the Armenian displacement that took place in 1915, during the final days of the Ottoman Empire, will be commemorated through a variety of events for a second time this year. Armenians all over the world commemorate this tragedy on April 24 because it was on that day in 1915 when many Armenians who were deported by the Ottoman Empire perished. The first commemoration ceremony held in 2010, 95 years after the incident, lingered on a message that this was a hurt that belonged to both to Turks and Armenians. This year’s commemoration ceremonies will be held in !stanbul’s Taksim Square, Ankara, !zmir, Diyarbakır and Bodrum. Victims of the displacement will be remembered in silence with carnations and candles. During the ceremonies the “duduk,” an Armenian musical instrument, will be played during a reading of the names of victims. The ceremonies are being organized by the Say Stop to Racism and Nationalism! (Dur De!) initiative. Spokesman Cengiz Algan said what took place in 1915 is “a hurt we all share.” “We need to confront the realities that have been hidden by the official ideology for 100 years”. A statement with the headline, “This pain is ours,” has been opened up for signatures. Alex is currently working with AYB School and ARI Literary Agency, and Emily, with School 130 and Dasaran.am. The Gubbins were preceded by Linda Shahinian and Herb Schiff (USA) who came to Armenia for two months, devoting over one month to volunteering at the Scientific Center of Historical and Cultural Heritage. This was their second volunteering stint with AVC.

Lisa Giragosian-Iskikian and Barkev Iskikian (USA) followed in June for a quick 18-day term of professional service in their respective fields of expertise. Lisa, who is a speech therapist, worked with Mission East, teaching workshops in the regions; and Barkev, a programmer and communications systems specialist, mentored and taught students at the Innovative Systems and Technologies Center.
