A PUBLICATION OF ARMENIAN DEMOCRATIC LIBERAL PARTY, WESTERN DISTRICT COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES

Kerkorian left USD 2 billion to Armenia Chairman of “Hamakhembum” (Consolidation) party Vartan Oskanian on his Facebook page touched upon the will of billionaire Kirk Kerkorian. “Today I have read the will of Kirk Kerkorian. I understood that USD 2 billion was bequeathed, which exclusively will be provided to one or more charitable organizations, which have U.S. tax service’s so called 501(C)3 privilege. The will must be disposed by three mentioned individuals, only one of whom is Armenian. In three years after Kirk Kerkorian’s death (one year has already passed) those three individuals must finish the distribution of that sum. Though there is no limitation on the decision of these three people, except that the decisions should be made on the principle of majority, I, nevertheless, think these persons carry moral responsibility, which derives from the priorities of charitable donations by Kirk Kerkorian especially during the recent 20 years. Kirk Kerkorian made charitable donations in three main directions: American institutions, especially edu-

cational Armenian organizations- educational, cultural, publishing etc. The largest part of his donations- to Armenia. I am sure that this factor puts some responsibility on the persons disposing the will in connection with their choice. It would be right to establish a 5-7 member committee including individuals, who enjoy the absolute trust of Armenians as soon as possible, so that the committee by holding consultations with larger groups, including Armenian government, present a package of proposals to those three individuals. The committee will aim at justifying the provision of large amounts of the will to Armenia, as well as noting the organizations and projects, which should be provided those sums. This issue shouldn’t be left to the mercy of fate. It will also be unacceptable if individuals or individual organizations, separately by their means, with contradicting proposals, serving their own interest, eliminate those three individuals, who dispose the will,” writes Mr. Oskanian.

Polls find Clinton leading nationally and in key states In U.S. presidential politics, not all states are treated equally. In the final days before the November 8 election, Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump are focused on a small handful of so called “battleground” or “swing” states that will determine who will be the next president of the United States. About twothirds of the 50 states generally lean toward one party or the other, leaving a dozen or so states that are up for grabs every four years. The U.S. elects a president through the state-by-state accumulation of votes

through the Electoral College, where the candidate who wins the popular vote in a given state is then awarded all of that state’s electoral votes. There are two minor exceptions in Maine and Nebraska where some of the electoral votes are awarded by congressional district. In the final days of the campaign, Clinton and Trump repeatedly target the same handful of states, which is why both White House hopefuls are making frequent visits to Ohio, Florida and North Carolina and small groups of other states that loom pivotal on election day.

The film recounts the incredible true story of one man’s desperate struggle to not only stay alive but to help save his people from near extinction in the 20th Century’s first genocide. World War I was raging in the Middle East, as the British fought side by side with the Arabs against the Ottoman Empire. In the midst of the chaos, Levon would lead a small expeditionary group on a daring mission to rescue the scattered, destitute survivors of the Armenian Genocide. Along the way, they would risk their lives countless times, endure unimaginable hardships, and cross paths with some of the 20th century’s most legendary figures – like Prince Faisal and Lawrence of Arabia. Extraordinarily rare film footage and photographs, as well as recently rediscovered documents, have been gathered from archives around the world to reveal a harrowing journey that is at once heart-wrenching and inspirational.

Malaga recognizes the Armenian Genocide The City Council of the Spanish City of Malaga has unanimously adopted a statement, officially recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide. The statement describes the events at the turn of the century as a crime against humanity, which resulted in the creation of the Armenian Diaspora. The Malaga City Council has expressed its support for world-spread Armenians. It has also noted that a cross stone dedicated to the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims will be erected in Malaga’s Central Park in the near future.

OUR VOTE IS OUR POWER The Diaspora’s greatest hope for our future is our vote! By John Perron & Tamar Poladian Perron, Esq. claimed he discriminated against a certain qualified female candidate in a Glendale election merely because she was a woman. Well, we know that female candidate and we know that she has formally declared that the allegations are untrue. In fact, she has gone on record to state that her election paperwork was incomplete and that her colleague Ardy Kassakhian was just doing his job as City Clerk by requiring her to revise her documents. We have known the real Ardy Kassakhian for many years. He is still the same decent man who has gained more wisdom, more experience and more knowledge. We do not “live in his district”. We cannot vote for Ardy Kassakhian for State Assembly but we tell every person we know that he is the right person to stand up for us. He is honest and fair and will do the right thing for our children, our families – all of us. He has been endorsed by our political parties and is not just for one side or the other. Ardy deserves the seat at the table because he has earned it. Ardy Kassakhian needs the power of votes - but for those of us who “don’t live in the district” we must raise our voice on his behalf. Endorse Ardy no matter where you live. Be willing to put your money where our mouth is and contribute as much as you can. We have. Our vote is our power and we each hold the power. As a community, OUR COMBINED VOTE IS OUR COMBINED POWER – LET’S SPEAK UP AND RAISE OUR VOICE. LET’S STAND BY OUR CANDIDATES – particularly, Ardy Kassakhian. We will. Remember, the California State Assembly legislates for the entire state. Our state is a powerhouse and our voice must ring throughout the halls of power.

During a recent campaign, we were asked by several people campaign “Why should I contribute to this campaign - I don’t even live in the district?” We were stunned. The answer is easy, and the same no matter where you live. You contribute and support candidates because as Armenians we must get more “seats at the table.” Period. The “seats” and the “table” of course are the seats of power. We are the Diaspora. The Diaspora by its very nature and definition is spread across the globe. Most of our people “don’t live in the district”! Instead our starting point should be, “How do we Armenians get our voice heard.” Over the many last one hundred plus years Armenians have been in California we have given birth to many hopefuls who have earned the right to claim seats at the table and to hold power - power for us and on our behalf. Unfortunately, they have been few and far between- remember our former Governor George Deukmejian; former Majority Leader of the State Assembly Walter Karabian and former Associate Justice of the State Supreme Court Armand Arabian, just to name a few? Armenians must raise our collective voices in unison and then our voice will be heard. Many cultures in America have combined efforts to gain seats of power and they have claimed many victories for their individual communities locally and their combined ethnic community across the United States. We should learn from them. We need to get our seat at the table, without fighting over who amongst us hold the seat. In an earlier article, we wrote that one problem in local elections came from splitting the vote – where you have too many Armenian American candidates sharing the same voting pool, diluting the votes, allowing some other person to win the election. But, that is not the biggest problem. Our bigger problem comes from our lack of support for our qualified candidates, because we “don’t live in the district”. In this election cycle, in the 43rd Assembly District one of our own – Ardashes “Ardy” Kassakhian - is facing an organized effort to besmirch his reputation and body of work. Unless you’ve lived under a rock these past several years, you know that Ardy Kassakhian has dutifully served the citizens of Glendale, California as City Clerk with honor and distinction. Now, he is running for State Assembly against a rival candidate with huge money donors from across the nation who has falsely

John Perron is a political advisor and consultant for nonprofits and business enterprises. John was a candidate for Los Angeles City Council in 2014 and is President of the East Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Tamar Poladian Perron is an attorney and a member of the Glendale Community Police Partnership Advisory Council and Glendale Police Advisory Council. Tamar was the first Armenian Community Liaison for any Los Angeles City Councilmember and Field Representative for Michael Woo in the 13th Council District. She also served as a member of the T.C. Evening with GenEd and film "The Other Side of Home"

Founded in San Francisco, The Genocide Education Project has come a long way in helping educators nationwide teach about the Armenian Genocide. Come learn and celebrate GenEd's activities and achievements and experience the new documentary film, The Other Side of Home, including a visit with director Naré Mkrtchyan and Executive Producer Iliana Guevara. The Other Side of Home is a moving, personal documentary by Armenian-American filmmaker, Naré Mkrtchyan (40 min). Naré travels to Turkey in April, 2015, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, during which 1.5 million Armenians were systematically murdered by the Ottoman Turkish government. Naré meets Maya, a Turkish woman who has recently discovered that her great grandmother was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. Maya struggles to reconcile her dual identity, personifying the painful, unresolved conflict between the two nations and the manifold damage from generations of official Turkish denial of the Armenian Genocide. The documentary follows Maya as she decides to take part in the centennial commemoration of the genocide in Armenia to try to come to terms with her conflicted identity.

Turkish Intellectuals Who Have Recognized The Armenian Genocide

Wikileaks reveal Azerbaijan influencing American electroral politics

134 - Dr. Ömer Faruk Gergerlio!lu By Hambersom Aghbashian Dr. Ömer Faruk Gergerlio!lu (born in 1965 in Isparta province.- Turkey) is a Turkish physician and human rights activist. He completed his primary and secondary education in Bursa, then graduated from (Bursa Anatolian Imam University)'s Medical School in 1990. He worked at Bursa Orhaneli State Hospital , then in 1995 started a training program and passed the TUS exam*and worked as Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis specialist. Since 2000 he is working as a specialist at "Izmit Seka" State Hospital . As a human rights activist and a prominent member of of "MAZLUMDER" ( oppressed) Association, he was elected in 2003 as a president of the association's Kocaeli branch, which is a local branch of the Association which defends the right to life, freedom of expression and women's rights. In 2007 he was appointed to the post by presidency of the General Assembly of "MAZLUMDER" unanimously. He participated in the legal proceedings and explanations of many laws and non-democratic practices. also participated , domestically and abroad, in many conferences , panel discussions and symposiums concerning the human rights and lead a field study concerning "Religious and ethnic discrimination in Turkey". Gergerlio!lu left his position as the president of "MAZLUMDER" Association in 2009 voluntarily. In 2013 , he formed with different NGOs "Istanbul Peace Platform Emissary", and followed closely the political situation in Turkey. since 2007 he is writing weekly columns on politics in Turkey and the world. In his article "Türkiye soykırımı inkârla nereye varır?" about the official denial of the Armenian Genocide by the

Turkish Government , published "in "t24.com.tr - April 18, 2015," Ömer Faruk Gergerlio!lu suggests that Turkey can show no progress, but only save the day with populist policies, unless it ends its denial of the Armenian Genocide. (1) According to " The Gurdian", Dec. 7, 2008, Academics and writers in Turkey have risked a fierce official backlash by issuing a public apology which reads: "My conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the denial of the Great Catastrophe that the Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915. I reject this injustice and for my share, I empathize with the feelings and pain of my Armenian brothers. I apologize to them." Breaking one of Turkish society's biggest taboos, the apology comes in an open letter that invites Turks to sign an online petition supporting its sentiments. The contents expose its authors - three scholars, Ahmet Insel, Baskin Oran and Cengiz Aktar, and a journalist, Ali Bayramoglu - to the wrath of the Turkish state, which has prosecuted writers, including the Nobel prize-winning novelist Orhan Pamuk, for supporting Armenian genocide claims. (2) The apology for the "great catastrophe of 1915", was a clear reference to the Armenian Genocide, a term still too sensitive to use so openly. Dr. Ömer Faruk Gergerlio!lu was one of the Turkish intellectuals who signed the petition. According to “Today’s Zaman”, September 26, 2014, “A group of academics, journalists, artists and intellectuals have released a statement condemning in the harshest terms what they define as expressions that include ‘open hatred and hostility’ towards Armenians in Turkish schoolbooks.. A letter accompanying the text of the condemnation, written by his-

9

torian Taner Akçam, notes that including such expressions as lesson material to teach children is a disgrace. The statement said ‘The revolutions history and history textbooks should be collected immediately, with an apology issued to everyone and particularly to Armenian students.” The signees said textbooks in schools should seek to encourage feelings of peace, solidarity and living together over inciting hatred towards different religious and cultural groups. Dr. Ömer Faruk Gergerlio!lu was one of the many most respected Turkish intellectuals who signed it. (3)

WASHINGTON, D.C. - As concerns are raised of Russia attempting to influence the U.S. presidential election by hacking campaign emails, one purloined record also reveal another country, namely Azerbaijan, doing the same. After reviewing emails on WikiLeaks, the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) discovered correspondence among campaign staffers discussing the legality of accepting donations from foreign governments, such as Azerbaijan, by Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) registrants. FARA is a disclosure statute that requires persons acting as agents of foreign principals in a political or quasi-political capacity to make periodic public disclosure of their relationship with the foreign principal, as well as activities, receipts and disbursements in support of those activities. The Assembly had previously raised concerns about potentially illegal activities of U.S. groups with ties to foreign entities in Turkey and Azerbaijan. The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) and the House Committee on Ethics concluded that 9 members of Congress and more than two dozen staff members accepted a trip that was improperly paid for by foreign corporations in Azerbaijan and Turkey. Azerbaijan's strategy is to influence U.S. policymakers as the Aliyev regime continues to deprive its citizens of basic human rights and freedoms. On October 20, Human Rights Watch reported that the Azerbaijani government has renewed its vicious crackdown on critics and independent groups. Per this report, "Arrests in Azerbaijan increased sharply as activists and other citizens spoke out about the economic downturn, currency devaluation, and inflation in early 2016, and ahead of a September constitutional referendum that expanded presidential powers, Human Rights Watch found."

‘The Promise:’ The Armenian Genocide epic Kirk Kerkorian spent a fortune to make “The Promise,” a sweeping historical romance starring Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale, is the kind of movie epic they just don’t make anymore. It’s a throwback to David Lean’s “Doctor Zhivago” and Warren Beatty’s “Reds,” movies that transposed big, emotional stories against a sprawling canvas, and tugged at the heartstrings while dealing with thorny political periods. It’s risky, but not just in that way. Not only is it one of the most expensive independently financed films ever made, it also deals frankly with the Armenian genocide. The mass killings of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire took place between 1915 and 1922, but decades later, the episode remains politically fraught. Bringing the story to the masses was a mission for Kirk Kerkorian, a businessman of Armenian descent who once owned MetroGoldwyn-Mayer. He died in 2015 as the film was going into production. “This was personal for him,” says Eric Esrailian, one of the film’s producers. “He always wanted to make an epic film with the best actors available that wouldn’t just be a history lesson.” His vision wasn’t cheap. “The Promise,” co-written and directed by Terry George (“Hotel Rwanda”), cost nearly $100 million to make before tax breaks. Kerko-

rian provided all of the financing through Survival Pictures, a company he set up with Esrailian. The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, has yet to close a distribution deal. Esrailian thinks the subject matter may be scaring some buyers away. There’s a reason for that fear. Officials in Turkey continue to deny that systematic killings of Armenians took place. “I’ll just say that there are some studios that have business interests in Turkey, and you can form your own opinion,” says Esrailian. There were no public protests at the Toronto premiere, but there is already evidence of a propaganda campaign to discredit “The Promise.” The film’s IMDb page has received more than 86,000 user votes, the bulk of them one-star ratings, despite the fact that the movie has had only three public screenings. That’s more user reviews than appear for “Finding Dory,” the highest-grossing film of the year. The filmmakers say reaction on social platforms has been equally intense. “The day after we screened the movie, 70,000 people went on IMDb and said they didn’t like the movie,” says Mike Medavoy, one of the film’s producers. “There’s no way that many people saw the movie after one screening. There aren’t that many seats in the theater. ”

“The Promise” centers on a love triangle involving a medical student (Isaac), a journalist (Bale), and the Armenian woman (Charlotte Le Bon) who steals their hearts. All three find themselves grappling with the Ottomans’ decision to begin rounding up and persecuting Armenians. “Some critics blamed us for being oldfashioned,” says George. “But that’s what we set out to do. We wanted as wide an audience as possible.” This isn’t the first attempt at a movie about the Armenian genocide. In the 1930s, MGM planned to adapt “The Forty Days of Musa Dagh,” Franz Werfel’s novel about the massacres and deportations of Armenians, starring Clark Gable. That production was abandoned after the Turkish government threatened to launch a worldwide

campaign against it. Studios may have a reason to be cautious. The film business is an increasingly globalized one, with major movies depending on foreign revenue to make a profit. When Hollywood has dramatized the genocide, the blowback has been fierce. Atom Egoyan has the scars to prove it: His 2002 film “Ararat,” which depicted a Hollywood director trying to make a film about the genocide, was the focus of a vast campaign targeting the film’s distributor, Miramax, and Disney, its parent at the time. The studio received so many negative emails that its website crashed. Egoyan warns that the controversy is just starting. “It’s going to be a tough ride,” he says. “The denialist lobby is very wellorganized.”

Giving voice to the voiceless Zepure Jerahian’s first major solo exhibition sheds light on the plight of refugees “It’s all in their eyes,” painter Zepure Jerahian says, referring to her portraits of refugees. “Look into them, and their stories come alive.” This year, as the Syrian civil war continued its free fall into a cauldron of unimaginable barbarism, Jerahian felt a growing moral obligation to chronicle the plight of Syrian refugees through the language of art. “Yes,” she says, “one can participate in relief efforts and perhaps feel better for having contributed to efforts to help ease the suffering of the victims, but something remains unsaid; I think the tangibility, the humanness of the experience of victimhood, gets lost in the sheer enormity of the cataclysm.” “We hear these astronomical numbers — over 5 million Syrian refugees, half of them children,” Jerahian continued. “And reports of indiscriminate bombings and massacres keep blaring into our living rooms. It all leaves us with a feeling of helplessness. We tend to get desensitized, as

though the tragedy were beyond human comprehension. That’s why my personal response has been to freeze images of that tragedy in time: to give it color, immediacy, palpability, by drawing portraits of refugees. Each has a story to tell, and each speaks to an irreducible truth.” Jerahian did extensive research in order to form as full a picture as possible regarding the human toll of the Syrian conflict. She learned about refugee camps in Jordan, the struggles of over a million refugees in Lebanon and elsewhere, the exodus of masses upon masses from Aleppo and other Syrian cities toward the mostly unwelcoming arms of Europe and America. Yet the more Jerahian delved into the subject, the clearer it became to her that the Syrian civil war was only the latest wedge in a larger, global picture of displacement. She learned that currently there are over 65 million displaced people worldwide, with a whopping 54 percent of them originating from three countries: Somalia, Afghanistan, and Syria.

Thus Jerahian began to draw portraits of refugees not just form Syria, but also Burundi, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Honduras, Cambodia, and elsewhere. She also drew Yezidi and Armenian victims, spreading her subject-matter net as far back as the Genocide of the Armenians. “My overarching goal has been to raise awareness,” she says. “I think the true function of art is to convey the visceral: to transform facts into a truth that speaks directly to the heart.” Jerahian’s series of paintings is titled “Unheard Voices: Refugee Women and Children.” In these ferociously vibrant, gorgeously hued, and in-your-face portraits, victims of displacement languish silently in their limbo, as festering scars on humanity’s conscience. The eyes — whether brown, black, blue, hazel, or green, and whether in tears or as dry as the scathing condemnation of the marginalized — are the most salient elements of these compositions. Perhaps, ultimately, the power of these paintings lies in the fact that as we we’re drawn into the eyes of the victimized women and children, what we catch is a glimpse of our own souls.” “We’re extremely proud to exhibit the works of Zepure Jerahian,” said Stepan Partamian, director of the Armenian Arts Gallery and added, “With her dynamic, deeply moving paintings, Zepure brings a fresh context and urgency to the subject of

displaced people. What comes through in these beautiful compositions is a genuinely universal perspective of compassion and solidarity.” “Unheard Voices: Refugee Women and Children” will open at the Armenian Arts Gallery on Friday, October 28, at 8 PM. Zepure Jerahian will be present at the event. The exhibition will remain open on Saturday and Sunday, October 29 and 30, between 5 and 10 PM. Armenian Arts Gallery is located at 1125 S. Central Ave., Glendale, CA 91204.
