A six centimetres long crack was detected on top of a steel vessel from a calcining kiln. It contained cooled water and the kiln is placed in hot and carbonaceous surroundings. The analysis proved that the cracks contained lead and zinc. Lead (Pb) is known to cause stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in the steels.
