Mid-City Stereo was founded in March 1976 by Doug and Twylia Speidel. From a modest start in downtown Norfolk at the corner of Third Street and Norfolk Avenue to their current “superstore” format at 1900 Center Drive, Mid-City has become one of the largest family owned furniture, appliance and electronics dealers in the Midwest. Doug and Twylia are now semi-retired, working three or four days a week helping their three sons — Jeff, Jason and Josh — make a smooth transition into the business. Son, Jeff Speidel manages the appliance department, including the custom kitchen design center. Son, Jason Speidel is in charge of home and car audio, home theatre and Direct TV sales and installation, flat-panel televisions and window tinting applications. Son, Josh Speidel works with the IT team for the Norfolk Co-owners Jason Speidel, Jeff Speidel & Josh Speidel Slumberland franchise and is the warehouse manager. Jeff, Jason and Josh not only manage the “superstore,” but they also work the “sales floor.” They stay in touch with their customers and tend to make friends out of former walk-in shoppers. Theirs is what could be called the “old-fashioned personal service.” The Speidel families’ winning formula at Mid-City Superstore and Slumberland Furniture is simple: Knowledge about their products, competitive pricing and service combine to make the vital difference. Plus, their ability to offer consumers such a wide variety and selection of name-brand products covering 70,000 square feet of showroom space. It’s apparent from the minute one walks into their “superstore” format that the Speidels are comfortable with their winning formula.
