WHERE’S THE BEEF?

Sanford restaurants known for their succulent steaks

By Heather Turk

Forget about chain steakhouses — you can dine at those back home. Steak aficionados traveling to Sanford hungry for a succulent cut of beef will find several local restaurants that know how to cook a steak to perfection.

Cattle Ranch Steakhouse

Famous for its signature 16-oz. Cowgirl T-bone and 32-oz. Cowboy Porterhouse, this family-owned restaurant has been serving some of the best steaks in Sanford for 38 years. All of its steaks are made from Greater Omaha beef that’s been aged for 30 days and cut on premise with trim to flavor. They are then cooked on an open-flame grill with the restaurant’s dry seasoning, resulting in some of the tastiest steaks in Florida. cattleranchsteakhouse.com

COLORADO’S PRIME STEAK

Renowned for its aged Colorado beef, this family-owned restaurant just celebrated its

30th anniversary in November. Its steaks are hand cut each morning in-house, and its burgers are freshly ground from the steak trimmings. In addition to such popular steaks as the New York strip, the restaurant serves the only natural smoked prime rib in Central Florida, smoked in a custom brick oven over hickory chips. coloradosonline.com

ST. JOHNS RIVER STEAK & SEAFOOD

A former bait and tackle shop, this locally owned favorite is known as much for its steaks as its gorgeous views of St. Johns River. It offers a wide range of USDAcertified Choice cuts of beef, including ribeye and filet mignon. Each steak is dry aged for 21 days or longer and seasoned with the restaurant’s own seasoning, before being grilled on a char-grill and finished with garlic herb butter. While the steaks are plenty flavorful by themselves, guests hungry for some surf and turf can add a variety of seafood items to enjoy with their beef, like a lobster tail or snow crab. stjrss.com
