Westfair 2011

Sunday, July 17, 2011 9F

Something’s cookin’ on the fairgrounds Westfair offers not one, but two new cooking competitions during its 2011 run. Iowa is known for its exceptional meat production, and Westfair is calling all fans of barbecue and grilling to show the judges their best recipes. “We Got Smoked at Westfair” The “We Got Smoked at Westfair,” a barbecue contest sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, will welcome up to 30 teams to participate in four categories on Friday, July 29. Judging will be held on Saturday, July 30, at noon. Judges will determine the winners in the categories of chicken, ribs, brisket and pork shoulders. Competitors will present their entries to six judges, each of whom are KCBS certified, plus a table captain. “This is really not about sampling for the public, but more for bragging rights and major money,” said Ann Vorthmann, Westfair Board member. “It’s up to each team, if they choose, to give out samples, but some will after the judging.” Cash prizes of $350 will be awarded to first-place winners in each category. Prizes will be awarded from first- through 10th-place. The Grand Champion overall will win $1,000 and the Reserve Champion will win $500. Entry fees range from $75 per category to $200 to participate in all four categories. The Thrill of the Grill The Iowa Farm Bureau’s Cookout Contest wants both young grillers and old pros to show off their skills on Sunday, July 31. Registration will be held at 8 a.m. with judging scheduled for 11 a.m. Iowa residents ages

13 to 18 are welcome to enter in the youth category, with adults registered in their own competition. “We’re excited to partner with the West Pottawattamie Farm Bureau on this new event,” said Laurie Stanton, Open Class superintendent. “Our goal is to have local amateurs bring their favorite grilled and smoked meats recipes to Westfair. They will battle for the bragging rights of winning at the county fair and the opportunity to compete at the Iowa State Fair.” The Cookout Contest offers a variety of categories: pork, beef (limited to chuck or round primal cuts includ-

ing ground chuck or ground round), lamb/goat, poultry, turkey and a combo/specialty, which presents two or more selections of the Iowa meats category/venison or any other domestically, raised product, excluding wild game. An entry fee of $20 is required for each category. A separate, free showmanship category is open to all contestants no matter which meat categories they have entered. Entry forms and rules for both contests can be found at WestfairEvents.com or by calling (712) 322-3400.

Entertainment for everyone Young and old alike will delight in the free entertainment presented on the Westfair Lawn from Thursday, July 28, through Sunday, July 31. In response to public demand, Jeff Klatt’s Runaway Saws returns to display his expert skill in creating one-of-a-kind sculptures from tree trunks in less than one hour. Performances will take place periodically from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 28, and Friday, July 29, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31. “Shenaniguns! Wild West Comedy Show” will keep the audience laughing with their familyfriendly one-liners, silly slapstick and cornball comedy. This wacky bunch has entertained at Cuzin Grumpy’s Pork Chop Revue fairs, festivals and theme parks across the country since 1979. They even performed at Donald Trump’s birthday party! Don’t miss the antics of Sheriff Hoppalong Casually and his sidekick, Deputy Leon Jones, as they take on dimwitted desperados, Bad Bob and his bumbling baby brother, Bubba Bob. Performances will be held Thursday, July 28, and Friday, July 29, at 6 and 8 p.m., and Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31, at noon, 2, 4 and 6 p.m. It’s been proven that pigs are highly intelligent animals. Not only are they smart, they’re talented! Cuzin Grumpy’s Pork Chop Revue proves that these porcine players can make a crowd laugh. See these “hams” on Thursday, July 28, at 3, 5 and 7 p.m.; Friday, July 29; Saturday, July 30; and Sunday, July 31, at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. Little cowboys and cowgirls will delight in a pony ride at the fair! High heels, hunks and hysterics It’s “Ladies Night” on Thursday, July 28, when the eighth annual “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” overtakes the Westfair Amphitheater. The evening will begin with shopping from 6 to 7 p.m. A variety of vendors including jewelry, clothing, cookware and candles will set the mood for a night of fun. Uptight from a tough day? Enjoy a mini-massage to get your night off to a great start! At 7 p.m. comedian Austin Anderson brings his wacky view of everything from Facebook to marriage. At 7:30 p.m., comedy will get a dose of estrogen when Heather James takes the stage. The signature cocktail of the year for “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” will be revealed at 8 p.m. when the male servers/exotic dancers shake up more than the martinis. Dr. Jodi Hedrick, D.O. Mid-City OB-GYN, follows at 8:15 p.m. with a discussion of women’s health topics. This “girls only” event is open to women ages 21 and older.
