Continued from Page 3 on at the end of a race. You have to motivate yourself to turn your legs over faster and to stretch your stride and do things that aren’t comfortable. The goal is to get everyone running faster and pushing what they believe their limits to be. We are continually training the team to get closer and closer to those limits. To do that, you have to train the students and their minds to run fast. We believe running fast is an attitude and a mentality.” With 17 runners out this year, Coenen said he also is guided by the tradition of Coach Hummel. “I was a freshman at Woodbine when Coach Hummel stepped down from coaching,” Coenen said. “I didn’t get a chance to compete under him but I did feel the impact
of his passion, dedication and style. It is a proud tradition to live up to. I think the boys are up to the task and we look forward to getting out there and competing in the Black & Gold.” Coenen said the strengths of the squad this year is in the long sprinting events where he plans to “put a big focus on the 4x400 meter relay,” which he considers critical to longer-term success of the WHS program. “Woodbine has traditionally been strong in the 4x400, the 4x800 and the medley relays,” he said. “We are going to work hard to earn some State berths in the relays. But we might be looking at better chances in the shorter relays and hurdle events.” Coenen believes strongly that the secret to a successful WHS team is
learning the basics of running efficiently. “It is all about pushing yourself to the next level,” Coenen said. “I will stress a lot more focus than the team is probably used to. Focus is the key. I love track – it is what I do. This is the most important thing in the year to me. I plan to focus on the little things that create great runners.” And, he said that philosophy is showing some early gains for the team. “We are making major leaps in practice in both running performance and distance,” he said. “For example, Kyle Kuhlman was a 100/200m runner before and he is now working up to 400-meter events. For his size, this shows a solid commitment to form and performance. The boys have done an

excellent job of embracing the quarter-mile this year as ‘our’ event and it is going to pay off come May.” He said it is the one race that is used the most in track competitions with nine slots at that distance. The 200-meter is the next most popular with eight slots at that distance. The next critical category is the 800meter with seven slots to fill. “For the 400, the movement must be clean and efficient,” Coenen said. “The runners are starting to understand what it takes to hold yourself to higher expectations and are seeing more potential in themselves. This is one of the areas where we will really excel. But, you have to be able to run in all three distance areas to be a winning team.” He added that Woodbine has

Continued from Page 4 always been pretty strong in each of those main areas with Coach Hummel leaving a proud tradition in the 4x400 events. For spectators, Coenen said the most exciting and fun heats to watch are the 4x100 events. “It is just exciting to watch,” he said. “It is fast and everyone is always close and a lot of things happen in a short amount of time that can drastically affect the outcome of the meet.” For individual performances, Kyle Kuhlman returns as a State Qualifier and looks to be strong in the open 100/200. “Kyle needs to expand his repertoire to be in the 400-meter, too,” Coenen said. “He is one of our strongest runners and we will rely heavily on him as a team.” Matt Monahan has improved a
great deal so far this season, Coenen said, especially in the sprint relay events. Mason Mentink is the team’s 400-meter hurdling ace, Coenen said, noting that this is a very tough event that requires competitors to be in excellent physical shape to be successful. Josh Matusik will be a major factor in any of our loaded relays with his efficiently graceful stride. Also on Coenen’s radar is Tristan Hatterman in the middle distance category. He also is working to mentor freshmen J.C. Probasco and Talon Delaney in the sprints and hurdles. “Our main goal is to win Highway 30,” Coenen said. “I don’t like getting beat by people who where purple. Logan and Boyer Valley are consistently strong programs that are moving in the right direction. We’re going to have
some work to makeup coming out of the field events and we hope we can make up the lost ground on the track.” He said Woodbine will host the annual Hummel Relays April 23 that will bring six teams to the school. With Woodbine’s 46-yearold dated track, the number of teams willing to compete here are limited. “It would be nice someday to run on an all-weather track here at home,” Coenen said. “Several other programs around us have eightlane all-weather tracks which is the minimum for hosting conference events. We have six lanes. We want to create an experience for teams coming to Woodbine; to make it the level of experience it used to be for teams to compete here back when our crushed brick oval was state of the art.”

Coenen said one of the best parts of coaching in Woodbine is the support of the community. “It is kind of neat how active and supportive the community is for the school and its programs,” he said. “It’s nice to see those names from the past coming back to compete and the number of people cheering on the kids. It is especially nice for me – like coming full circle (from my student days here). Coenen’s assistant coach is Jason Strong. Together, Coenen said he looks for great team performances from this year’s boys’ track and field team. We’ve got a lot of young boys this season and we hope they each can develop roles that help our team see more success. Hopefully we can stay healthy and stay committed to the process. If we do, good things are going to happen for us come May.

running mood,” he said. “We have a solid nucleus to build around. We have all of our girls back including from our state-winning distance medley relay team.” Smith said seniors Shelby Hall, Justina Royer and Melissa Smith anchor this year’s squad. Other seniors out this year that were not competing last year are Shelby Dick and Shelby Vandemark. On the season, Smith said IKM/Manning will be the toughest team to beat in the conference. “IKM/Manning has a lot of their depth back and they have more girls out on the team – that will make them a tough competitor,” he said. “Griswold and Treynor both also have some very good runners. Those teams are almost always
strong. Tri-Center also has a very good cross-country team which is a good base for track.” Smith said he and the team are both looking forward to setting some school records this year. “Hall was fourth at state last year in the 800-meter,” Smith said. “She really wants to beat the school record in that event. She is two seconds away from that record, which was set in 1975.” He also noted that the winning medley team of Hall, Royer, Kaitlyn Pulscher and Shelby Behrendt are all back and he is looking for some strong performances out of the group. With 21 girls out for the team, Smith said this is the largest group

The team has already participated in some early meets and Smith said he is pleased with his team’s performances in those events. The first was an Iowa State University hosted indoor event that was open to every school district in the state and allowed the Woodbine team to compete against teams and individual athletes from across the state. “More than 400 schools participated in that event with literally hundreds of competitors – it allows our girls to experience the full range of talent in the state and how they compare,” Smith said. The next meet was the March 17 Conference Indoor meet at Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, in which the team also performed above par, Smith said. The first outdoor meet was scheduled after press time for the sports tab on March 29 in Audubon. Smith said the girls’ team will compete in 13 meets this season,
not counting the state meet. “That is about the same number of meets as in the past,” he said. State competition is a very likely prediction for this year’s team,” Smith said. “We will probably qualify as events, not as a team,” Smith said. “We qualified for six events last year, which is quite a few for us. I think there is a very strong likelihood that we’ll qualify for even more events this year.” The WHS girls track program comes from a proud and long history of success and commitment to the sport. “Our girls’ track tradition and history is very rich,” Smith said. “We won state three years in a row in the 1970s and Debbie Esser went on to become a World Class international runner. In the 1990s, our teams also dominated the state meets. Woodbine is pretty well known for its track program and successes. That all goes back to legendary Coach Hummel.”

Smith said he got his is start in coaching from Hummel. “In 1989, I became his assistant coach,” Smith said. “I worked and learned from him until 1997 when I became the head coach. He was very passionate about this program and I have the responsibility of keeping that spirit alive in the program.” Team managers for the girls’ track team are Cassi Barry, Annie Klein and Bailee Meyer. The assistant coach is Teresa Smith, Rod’s wife, which kinds of make the program a bit of a family affair for him. “My family has been highly involved in girls’ track with me since 1998,” he said. “My wife is my assistant coach because she wants to help me out and she and I just know how to work together to get the most out of the girls – we know how each of us wants things to be done. And, with Hall being my niece, it rounds out the family aspect nicely.”

The rest of the team are two freshmen girls and a junior – Whitney Ronk, Karlie Heefernan, and Megan Pauley “Those girls have never even played golf before but they are eager to learn and master the skills of the game,” Marshall said. “The players enable us to field a competitive team – something the program has not always been able to do.” Marshall said he doesn’t actively recruit students to the team in deference to WHS’s proud tradition in track and field for both boys’ and girls’ programs. “The girls talk to each other and we do look for girls not already involved in other activities that have an interest in golf and work them into the program,” he said.
On the boys’ side, there are five returning letter winners – Davis Hackman (senior), Joe Brown (senior), Jay Radloff (Senior), Chris Johnson, (Sophomore) and Patrick Glackin (Junior). “Hackman was a state participant last year and I am looking forward to the experience and maturity he brings to both the game and the team,” he said. “Brown and Hackman went to the conference tournament last year and placed third and fourth, respectively. We are excited to see where they place this year.” To get to the south section of the conference, Marshall said individual team members need to be rated in the top 20 players of all the teams. For the entire team to compete, they need to be rated in the top three.

“That is very possible for us – we have the talent and the ability to manage the course to make this happen,” he said. Marshall said Hackman and Brown are the best on the team at managing their overall game. “Those two know how to work the ball around the course really well,” he said. “They will teach the others guys how to do that.” For the girls’ team, Marshall said Jessica Allen has the potential to be very competitive, individually. “Allen is a very solid player and I know what I will get from her every time out on the course,” Marshall said. “For Schlinz, the sky is the limit for her. She has improved a great deal from last year.” Marshall said the top four scores are used to determine team winners and that this year’s teams should be highly competitive on the links. One of the biggest strengths the WHS golf teams have, Marshall said, is the maturity to keep the scorecard numbers low. “We don’t want big numbers on the score card,” he said. “These kids all know how to recover from a poor shot. They have learned how to manage that and move on to the next shot.” For example, he said Hackman “was able to see what it takes” to be

a champion golfer by participating in last year’s state competition. “Hackman learned and experienced what it takes to manage the course last year,” Marshall said. “He has taken that experience and built a solid core game around it. He is in mid-season form right now.” And, Marshall said he wishes all of his players had the mind control over the game that Brown does. “I wish all my golfers had Joe’s mentality,” he said. “He has no negativity at all about his game. He’s always ready to get on to the next shot. It is his mind set that makes him such a tough competitor.” For the season, Marshall said boys’ teams from West Monona and IKM will be tough but that Woodbine has a good chance of matching their skills. “West Monona has everyone back from last year which will make them hard to beat,” Marshall said. “ On the girls’ side, Marshall said it is the new players who will help keep the team competitive. “We have a lot of new faces and they have a great attitude to learn the game,” he said. “Nothing gets them down – they are very solid as

Continued from Page 8 a team. Our goal this year is not to finish last every week. Last year, we lost every contest. This year we are positioned better competitively. Last year was our school’s first time in years to even field a girls’ team and that was an important milestone. And, I am good with beginners – they don’t have any bad habits we have to break first.” A practicing strength for the
team, he said, is the integrity and spirit the players bring. “At practices, they do a good job of taking care of themselves,” he said. “They actually know the different parts of their games they need to work on and they take the responsibility to work on those areas. It’s easy for players at this age to just focus on how far they can hit the ball. Our kids know they have to work on their touch, chips

build their careers.” High School tournaments are nine hole with a solid score on the boys side of high 30s to low 40s as being top finishes and for the girls’ players, a score in the mid-50s will get players into top spots. “Our goals are to work well as a team, focus on our individual games, and practice to win,” Marshall said. “I’m looking forward to a solid season.”

Page 11 Spring Sports Lo-Ma Golfers ready to tee up for the 2012 season April 4, 2012
The Logan-Magnolia High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams are ready to hit the course in order to fine-tune their game for the 2012 season. The golf teams took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather as they began practice during the week of March 12. The main goal of the season will be to become more consistent, not only with each golfers swing, but in scoring from meet to meet. The girls’ golf team saw seven golfers show up for the first day of practice. Sophomore, Molly Weber, is the only golfer who returns with varsity experience as she lettered on last year’s Regional qualifying team Other golfers who will be looked at to contribute at the varsity level are, juniors, Staci Baker, Sydney Hammitt, Jade Larson and Erin Schramm; sophomore, Denisha Dobbs and freshman, Sarah Stueve.
For the boys’ team, 16 golfers are looking to fill out the varsity and junior varsity rosters for the season. Seniors Alex Cohrs and Cole Davis and junior Clayton Lundergard, return with varsity experience from last season. As a team, these three golfers will lead the way as the Panthers’ try and improve on last year ’s scoring average. Improvement on the team’s average score will allow LoMa to be more competitive from meet to meet. Individually, Davis will look to continue his strong play which earned him medalist honors on more than one occasion last year, highlighted by a first place finish at the Western Valley Conference Championship in Denison. By Judy Adair In his sixth season as head coach, Joe Cooper is counting on a strong group of seniors to lead his team this year. Nate Fender, Grady Killpack, Ethan Pitt and Dominic Snyder will be the seniors in that role. “We have a well rounded team and have potential in all areas,” Cooper said. “It’s a very tough conference and district, but I’d like to finish in the top four.” It has been the trend over the last few years to have one or two state qualifiers. One of the goals for this group of tricksters is to better that. Coach Cooper has all events filled this year except the long jump. Early indications are sprints should be strong this year. The West Harrison girls’ track team returns 13 letterwinners from its 2011 team, including several runners from the middle distance races. Five of those returners are seniors but the Hawkeyes also have some youth to go with their experience as well. Coach Rick Barker said that will be helpful to his team
this season. The group that Barker counted on in the middle distance races last season that is back in 2012 is: Maddie Gerdes, Annemarie Davis, Charlee Ryan, Maggie Thomas, Alexis Pettid and Sonia Rutkowski. The runners that were a part of the sprint events and will lead the team again this year in that area are:
Amanda Ruffcorn, Emma Pruett, Miranda Felton and Sam Schulz. According to Barker, the Hawkeyes also have a solid option in the throwing events with Marissa Knott and Miranda Bertelsen and Emilee Earlywine contribute to the team in the distance events.

West Harrison Boys’ Track Team returns strong nucleus Coming off a high finish at the state meet, the West Harrison boys’ track team returns a solid nucleus from that team in 2012, including two runners that ran on its winning 4x400 meter relay. That relay win allowed the Hawkeyes to edge five different teams, including fellow Western Iowa opponent Treynor, in the battle for third place in the team race that was not decided until the last
event. Tyler Birdsall and Jake Roden ran the middle legs on that relay and Birdsall also opened the runner-up 1600 meter medley relay team and ran on a third-place 4x200 meter relay team for the Hawkeyes. West Harrison has seven seniors but also has talent and solid numbers in its younger classes, including athletes like Birdsall and Roden. “We have 20 returning lettermen
but also have some newcomers that will contribute,” coach Gregg Beam said. “We finished top five of all but two meets last season and want to continue that success.” Lane Peasley, Lyle Nichols and Colton Loomis were all alternates for the state meet for West Harrison and will look to build on the experience they gained in 2011 while taking on bigger roles this season. Peasley ran in the state meet in
2010. The Boyer Valley boy’s golf team comes into the season on a rebuilding year. The Bulldogs will be looking to replace three of the top four golfers from last season’s squad, but fourth year coach Gary Neilsen has faith in his squad they can compete. “We did lose quite a bit of experience from last year’s squad,” said Neilsen. “But we have some young guys that show some promise. With the leadership of our top guys, we can make something happen as a team.” Neilsen will be looking for some big things from senior Luke Elder, who will be coming back as the number 1 and his fourth year on
varsity. Another big returner will be junior Michael Christensen. He will also be looking for some quality play from junior Tyler Hoffmann. He came up for districts last season and will be looking to continue off of that success. He feels that having quite a few people out, it will help his team to stay competitive and work towards earning their spots, but also hurt the team with no experience and no certainty as to who will fill each spot each week. Neilsen thinks the Western Valley Conference will be tough this year, but that his team can get up and compete with the top 3 of the south division. He also feels
that IKM-Manning and West Monona will be at the top of their game this year. “I feel that there are some good quality teams in the conference and our division this year,” said Neilsen. “I won’t let them accept second place and want them to work towards the best. Realistically, we will be shooting to finish top 3 in our division and reach our conference championship meet.” The big thing that Neilsen wants to accomplish this year is to develop some consistency as a squad and something to build on for next year.
Boyer Valley Girls’s Golf team has experience The Boyer Valley girl’s golf team comes into the season looking to make a splash in the conference. The Bulldogs will be looking to replace three golfers lost from last season’s squad, but fourth year coach Gary Neilsen feels they fill a quality squad this year. “We do have experience with our returners this year, including our top returner Codi Block,” said Neilsen. “But we will be looking for some younger girls to step up this year. We will need some leadership from Block and the other two returners.” Neilsen will be looking for some big things from senior Codi Block,
who will coming back as the number 1 in her fourth year on varsity and after qualifying second for regionals last year. Two other juniors, Megan Behrendt and Whitney Klein, will also be key components to Boyer Valley’s success this year. Both are returning with significant experience on varsity last season. Having Codi coming back off a strong year will be a big lift for his team. “Having someone with that experience and success can only rub off onto the other girls,” said Neilsen. He knows that will help overcome the youth and inexperience his team has. He feels that the Western Valley
Conference isn’t very deep this year, but the top teams will be competitive with each other. He also feels that the conference championship is wide open and having a full squad will help his team compete for that. “It’s tough to say what will happen with the conference this year,” said Neilsen. “I feel we can compete and make something happen. Not every team will have a full squad, which gives us an advantage.” The big thing that Neilsen wants to happen this year is to have the team develop something they can build on as the year goes along as well as for the future.
BV Boys’ Track team shows great depth early The Boyer Valley boy’s track team returns quite a bit of depth this season and is looking to have a very successful season. Jay Petersen comes into his 10th season and likes what his team has to offer.
“We have good experience and talent throughout the team, especially in the lower grade levels,” said Petersen. “That will provide plenty of competition in practice for the guys. That competition will
help in everyone performing at their top level at each and every meet.” Petersen will be looking for some big things from senior distant run-

Neilsen thinks the Western Valley Conference will be tough this year, but he knows his team can compete and have a successful year.
He also feels that IKM-Manning and West Harrison will be competing for the top spot with his team as well. “I feel that this team can be competitive and be at the top in most events and win every meet,” said Petersen. “I won’t let them accept second place and want them to work towards the best. ence will give us an advantage, especially early in the season. This will help us start to build to having a successful season.” The big thing that Neilsen wants to accomplish this year is to keep the competition high and make sure they are competing at a high level in each event and scoring a lot of points.
Boyer Valley Girls’ Track team looking to make a big impact Stacy Pippitt is coming into her first season as head coach and is looking to have a productive season this year. The Bulldogs have 12 letter winners coming back from last year’s squad to help lead the charge. “We have good experience and talent coming back which will provide for a fun and productive year,” said Pippitt. “We have quite a few girls coming back, many that quali-
fied for state last season and will be looking to make a bigger impact this year.” Pippitt will be looking for some big things from seniors Nisha Hull, Melissa Kroll and Codi Block. All three girls qualified for states in multiple events last season and are looking to do the same this year. She likes having depth and experience on her squad which will help provide for some quality results.
She also feels that the team can break some school records this season. Pippitt isn’t sure what to think with the Western Valley Conference this year, but knows her team can compete and be towards the top. She likes her team’s chances to work towards a conference championship. “I feel that this team can be competitive and can prove something
this year,” said Pippit. “This may be my first season at the helm, but the girls are ready to continue to work hard and strive to be the best they can be. They are ready to have fun, break some records and go as far as they can in the postseason.” Pippitt is striving to continue off the success of last season for the team and send as many girls to state as they can, but also have some fun along the way.
Missouri Valley Boys’/Girls’ Soccer -- First Time in History! Missouri Valley will be fielding boys and girls soccer teams for the first time in school history this year. With help from the Missouri Valley Soccer Club for equipment and uniform purchases, the Big Reds will play a full varsity schedule. Jason Dulberg will head up the girls program and Victor Contrarez will guide the boys. Both coaches have been coaching in some capacity since 1986, including stints at Iowa Western, other area schools and even running teams in Europe. The girls team will include seniors Katie Rohe and Mercedes Fox. Also, juniors Mia Feldman, Breezy Weaver, Shelby Marley, Brett Clausen, Jodi Roth, Ayla Sulley, Bobbi Hiatt, Kyrin Davis will be competing, along with freshmen Morgan Mentzer, Jessica Buss, Kim Niebur, Lynsey Endriss and Carlee Osborn. “With the numbers that I have, they will all see varsity minutes,” Dulberg said. “The varsity starters
will have to earn their position. We will be rotating, but want to be in good condition to be able to play a lot.” Dulberg expects his team to carry a positive attitude and put forth a great deal of effort. “The ladies are so excited and ready to go and we are hoping to come in with a bang, ” added Dulberg. Dulberg plans on playing a highpressured defense and relying on their conditioning. Some weaknesses Dulberg foresees are direct and corner kicks and set pieces. The Lady Reds will be competing in the Western Iowa Conference against Riverside, A-H-S-T, Tri-Center and Underwood. Dulberg expects all the conference games to be tough. He also sees other area teams including Glenwood, St. Albert, Thomas Jefferson, Denison-Schleswig and Harlan to be tough. “Our team is planning to win this year,” Dulberg said. “We will work to
be good and will get better in playing the better teams. Hopefully, we will keep improving and keep pushing to be the best we can be.” The Lady Reds travel to Creston April 2nd for their first contest. Contrarez will have 15 boys competing for playing time on his roster including senior defenders Devon Jensen and Ryan Carlson and midfielder Logan Reinig. Juniors on the team will be midfielders Caleb Wilson, Jacob Pagel, Nathan Phillips and Zach Boggs, goalies Scott Voss, Lucas Goff and Zach Chapin, and striker Logan Oliphant. Sophomores include defender Justin Chapin and mid-fielder Cyan Seamann. Contrarez plans to rely on Wilson’s abilities to help lead the team. “Caleb really stands out, works hard, is explosive and is a good athlete,” Contrarez said. Discipline and a hard work ethic
are two characteristics that Contrarez feels his team will use to its advantage. “I don’t know what we have for skill level yet, and I know it will be a challenge, but these kids are coachable and work very hard.” Contrarez sites a lack of exposure to the high school level competiton as a weakness for his squad and also its team chemistry. “We will be defensive-minded,” Contrarez said. “It’s easier to overcome better skilled opponents by limiting their scoring opportunities.” The Big Reds hope to be competitive in its first year, but are also working on building a program for the future. Contrarez thinks Underwood will have one of the better teams in the Western Iowa Conference, but feels all the teams will be tough to contend with. “We want to to win at least one-half of our games,” Contrarez added. “I want the kids to have fun, but also to learn and be competitive.”

Missouri Valley Boys’/Girls’ Golf team ready for the links Jamie Wieme returns for his sixth season as the head boys and girls golf coach for Missouri Valley this year. He will be assisted by John Torrey. The boys team has 11 golfers out, including five returning letterwinners from last year’s squad. These are seniors Dan Waterhouse, Matthew Brown and Eric Ford, junior John Wohlers and sophomore Brady Kruckman. “We will be young with a lot of guys competing for varsity positions, which will hopefully result
in lots of improvement,” Wieme said. Wieme is hoping his team will show good improvement throughout the season and peak at the right time. “It would be nice to see the boys work their way back up towards the middle of the pack in the Western Iowa Conference,” added Wieme. The girls have only seven members on its team including returning letterwinners, seniors Janelle Smithson, Tierney Robinson, and Conner Marsh and junior Taylor
Gardner. Smithson and Gardner were both ranked in the top 50 high school golfers in the state last year. “We have a lot of girls with varsity experience who fell three strokes short of advancing out of our district for the second year in a row,” Wieme said. “Hopefully, they will be fired up to make a run at it again this year.” Even though the girls squad is small in number, Wieme feels the girls he has have a lot of valuable experience that will give his team good depth. “The girls finished
second in the Western Iowa Conference last year and third at districts,” Wieme added. “Hopefully, we can finish at or near the top of those again this year.” Wieme believes that both the Treynor boys and girls teams will be tough again this year. He also thinks that Audubon, Underwood and Tri-Center will show great improvement. Both the boys and girls teams play host to Logan-Magnolia March 29th to open the season.
Missouri Valley Boys’ Track team returns several strong runners The Missouri Valley boys’ track team did not qualify any athletes for the state track meet last spring but returns several athletes that played a key role for the Big Reds last season. “All of our kids that return from last year ended the season in quality fashion,” co-coach Ryan Victor said. Victor mentioned a couple of competitors in each discipline that
stood out from a year ago. Missouri Valley received contributions from Baron Norman and Tory Watson in the sprint races, Devon Jensen and Jacob Pagel in the middle and long distance races and Taylor Herman and Jordan Buss in the throwing events. The Big Reds also have nine other returning letterwinners from the 2011 varsity squad. Those student-athletes include: Austin
Stirtz, Caleb Wilson, Clayton Ferguson, Kyle Lorenzen, Logan Reining, Michael West, Ryan Carlson, Sam Schmitz and Scott Voss. Victor talked about a group of six newcomers that may figure into the equation in meets for the Big Reds in 2012. That group is comprised of: Drew Pauley, Justin Chapin, Reed Kirlin, Lake Mobley, Sage Lloyd and Cody Cunard.
In Western Iowa, Missouri Valley will have to deal with teams this spring like West Harrison and Treynor, who both finished in the top ten in 1-A last season. Victor said there are other solid teams around the area as well, however. “All the teams in our conference and area are quality track teams,” Victor said. “They will be good competition for our athletes.”
Missouri Valley Girls’ Track team has mixture of experience/youth Eleven letterwinners return from a Missouri Valley girls’ track team that did not qualify an event for state but still has three athletes that competed in Des Moines in 2010. Courtney Cunard and Hailey Hellstrom were a part of the distance medley relay team that ran on the blue oval at Drake Stadium two years ago and Jodi Roth competed in that meet as well.
The athletes on the track team have had plenty of success this season in volleyball and basketball, along with the cross country team qualifying for state. “We have a mixture of experience and youth so it should be an eventful season,” coach Scott Cihacek said. “We should be fairly solid in the sprint events as well as the throws.
“Our Juniors and seniors will need to step up as they did in other sports, so we can achieve some high goals.” Three of runners on the state qualifying cross country team played key roles as a part of the track team last season as well. Breezy Weaver ran a multitude of middle and long distance races in track last season and continued her
strong ways with a 24th-place finish as an individual in Fort Dodge this fall. Paige Pauley and Mia Feldman also finished in the top 100 at the state meet. “I think all of the area schools will have some areas that they will excel in,” Cihacek said. “I am looking forward to the first outdoor meet this week.”
