Christmas classics restore the magic of the holidays Many of these stories do more than entertain – they restore our faith in ourselves and each other. Take a moment to relax in front of the TV this season with friends at home and on screen.

N

o matter how you celebrate, the holidays are a busy time of year and they can seem more hectic than joyful. But for many, a key part of their Yuletide traditions is taking time out to relax while watching beloved Christmas movies. There are all kinds of Christmas films, but the true classics are often stories about restoring faith, redemption and coming together. Such movies harken back to days when the holidays were about celebrating peace on Earth and good will toward each other, not the latest gadget or the trendiest toys. Few songs conjure up these feelings while capturing that sense of nostalgia like “White Christmas.” In fact, the

movie that first introduced it to the world, “Holiday Inn” (1942), celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. Bing Crosby stars as singer Jim Hardy opposite Fred Astaire as Ted Hanover. Laden with Irving Berlin holiday tunes, the movie follows a heartbroken Hardy as he opens a rustic inn and learns to love again. It was loosely remade with “White Christmas” (1954), in which Crosby teamed up with Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen to save a struggling inn by putting on an elaborate Christmas show. With these two classics and the biggestselling single of all time to his credit, Crosby has become virtually synonymous with the season – but

so, too, has legendary actor Jimmy Stewart. His portrayal of a desperate George Bailey in Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) has made the film a perennial favorite. After Bailey wishes he’d never been born, a guardian angel shows him what the town of Bedford Falls would be like without him, making him realize just how much he means to his loved ones. The life-affirming story strikes a chord with viewers year after year as we remember to focus on the positive and come together in tough times – an important theme in the wake of the recent financial crisis. On a lighter note, this year also marks the 65th anniversary of “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947).

Edmund Gwenn stars in his Oscar-winning role as Kris Kringle, an elderly gentleman who takes a job as a Macy’s department store Santa in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Insisting that he is, in fact, the real Santa, Kringle is forced to

stand before a judge to prove it. The sweet tale epitomizes what it takes to truly have faith as no one has concrete proof of Kringle’s claims. The outcome is as uplifting as any holiday movie, as little Susan (played by a young Natalie

problem might be choosing a favorite version of the movie, which has been remade time and time again, from a 1908 silent film to a beloved Muppets version and a 2009 animated 3D Disney movie – not to mention countless TV adaptations. Charles Dickens’ story of a miserly Scrooge who learns the error of his selfish ways on Christmas Eve reminds us that giving is, indeed, better than receiving. For of all the nostalgia of classic Christmas movies, many contemporary films have made their way into viewers’ hearts as well. “The Polar Express” (2004) is one of the most visually stunning examples of a modern-day holiday classic. On Christmas Eve, a young boy doubts the existence of Santa Claus, only to be whisked away by train to the North Pole in this computer-animated fantasy. Many of other releases have become classics

On the Cover thanks to their lighthearted approach. In 1983, “A Christmas Story” became an instant favorite with the story of young Ralphie who, like so many kids at Christmastime, sets his sights on one coveted Christmasmorning prize: a Red Ryder BB gun. Clark Griswold’s (Chevy Chase) dreams for a perfect family holiday go awry in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989), as he comes to learn that what he has means so much more than any picture-perfect Norman Rockwell Christmas. Funnymen Tim Allen and Will Ferrell also made the jump from TV to movies thanks to some modern-day holiday classics. Allen’s 1994 hit “The Santa Clause” found him taking up the mantle of Santa after an unfortunate Christmas Eve accident, whereas Ferrell’s “Elf ” (2003) sends him to New York to find his biological father after growing up in the North Pole. Bill

Murray and Billy Bob Thornton have even conveyed jaded takes on the holiday season with their bad-boy Christmas comedies “Scrooged” (1988) and “Bad Santa” (2003), respectively. With an abundance of Christmas movies to choose from, it’s difficult to believe there’s room for more, but each year new movies pop up, hoping to capture the hearts and imaginations of young and old. Hallmark Hall of Fame is the force behind the holiday romance “Christmas With Holly,” premiering Sunday, Dec. 9, on ABC. Toy store owner Maggie (Eliose Mumford) falls for a man who’s been raising his six-year-old niece since his sister passed away. That same day, ABC Family premieres “The Mistle-Tones,” starring Tia Mowry and Tori Spelling. Singer Holly (Mowry) loses out on a spot in a legendary vocal group when the part goes to the best

7. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, 1989

2. The Muppet Christmas Carol, 1992

3. Home Alone, 1990 Laugh out loud as young Kevin McCallister shows a couple of burglars he’s no helpless child in this holiday comedy. When his parents accidentally leave for their Christmas vacation without him, Kevin fends off crooks with booby traps.

9. The Polar Express, 2004 Enjoy a holiday adventure in this film based on the classic Chris Van Allsburg book about a skeptical boy who’s transported to the North Pole on a magical train. Tom Hanks lends his voice to the computer-animated film, which employs cutting-edge motion-capture technology.

4. Elf, 2003 Will Ferrell pokes fun at the lighter side of the holidays in a Christmas comedy with real heart. The “Saturday Night Live” alum portrays Buddy, an average-sized person who was raised as an elf after he climbed into Santa’s toy bag as an infant.

A crooner’s Christmas: Buble’s special is music to NBC’s ears The rocker’s memoir, “Rod: The Autobiography”, was released earlier this year to critical acclaim and staggering sales, and his new Christmas album, “Merry Christmas, Baby,” promises to be one of the holiday’s hottest stocking stuffers. The rocker will perform these tracks in a special holiday-themed instalment of PBS’s “Great Performances,” which will feature guest appearances by Buble, Mary J. Blige, CeeLo Green and even a virtual Ella Fitzgerald. Shelton needs no introduction to country fans, or to many NBC viewers. This awardwinning country superstar – and coach on NBC’s hit reality series “The Voice” – has had 11 No. 1 hit singles and won countless awards. Take some of the biggest names in music today, add in a fan-favorite crooner and sprinkle generously with Christmas magic. The final result? A new Christmas special from Michael Buble.

“A

Michael Buble Christmas” was a big hit last year on NBC, and Buble is following it up this holiday season with “Michael Buble: Home for the Holidays.” The new, one-hour special is scheduled to air Monday, Dec. 10, on NBC, with an encore airing on Friday, Dec. 21. “I’m so excited to be back on NBC for another big Christmas special,” Buble said. He’ll be joined on stage by the legendary Rod Stewart, country star Blake Shelton and rising star Carly Rae Jepsen. And since a Christmas special can never have too much star power, the world’s most recognizable little red monster will be making an appearance, too. “Sesame Street’s”

own Elmo will be joining Buble in the musical fun, and it’s a pretty safe bet that he’ll be a hit with audiences young and old. “I think the show really captures the joyous spirit of the holidays,” Buble said of this year’s special, which was filmed in his hometown of Vancouver, B.C. Among the classic seasonal tunes old and new that Buble and friends will be singing are “Let it Snow,” “All I Want for Christmas is You,” “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Winter Wonderland.” Last year’s “A Michael Buble Christmas” may have been a hit with TV audiences, but it was an even bigger hit with Buble himself. A longtime dream of his was to record a Christmas album, and

in 2011 he proved that dreams really do come true. “Michael Buble Christmas” went multi-platinum and sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide, making it the second-best-selling album that year. That album is being rereleased this year, complete with a brand new track titled “The Christmas Song.” Buble might be joined by some of music’s top names, but they have their own Christmas albums – and new TV specials of their own – as a treat for fans, too. Stewart is a legend in rock ‘n’ roll music; he’s a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has been a fixture in the music industry for half a century. He certainly has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.

Cookies take center stage in Food special

T

he holidays can be a magical time of year, one that is infused with the familiar scents and flavors that have become synonymous with the season, such as cinnamon and cranberries. But for all the good will and warm sentiments, it can also be one of the most stress-

ful times of years. It’s not easy to fit everything in – the shopping, the baking, even the additional expenses – but a little inspiration and some planning can go a long way in helping you enjoy the season’s joys. From gingerbread to sugar cookies, baking and decorating cookies have long been holiday

traditions for many families – and the Food Network knows it. As part of its festivethemed weekend programming this month, the Food Network is adding a new one-hour special to its roster. “All-Star Cookies,” premiering Sunday, Dec. 9, features clips of its all-star chefs baking up some specialty

cookies that would be perfect for any cookie exchange party. Giada De Laurentiis, Paula Deen, Ina Garten and even the “Sandwich King” himself, Jeff Mauro, are among the Food stars whose cookie recipes might inspire viewers to bake their own batch to give, enjoy or leave for Santa on Christmas Eve.

The cookie special will be particularly timely for those looking to participate in a cookie exchange. The concept can actually be a big time and money saver: you and your fellow guests need only make a big batch of one recipe each, then you trade your way to a whole assortment of cookies to enjoy or freeze until

your next get-together this month. It’s also an inexpensive way – and a fun excuse – to spend quality time with friends and family all at once, without it being a formal affair. So tune in to “All-Star Cookies” on Dec. 9 for inspiration and more ideas to add to your holiday recipe collection.

Gingerbread Cookies 3 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 tbsp cinnamon 1 tbsp ground ginger (fresh preferred) 1/2 tsp ground cloves (fresh preferred) 1/2 tsp kosher salt 3/4 tsp baking soda 12 tbsp-1 cup unsalted slightly softened butter (cut into 12 pieces) 3/4 cup molasses 2 tbsp milk (whole milk preferred)

Making gingerbread treats – like these ones, as seen on “Sandra Lee Celebrates: Magical Merry Christmas” – can be fun for the whole family

In a food processor bowl fitted with steel blade, mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, salt, and baking soda until combined. Scatter butter pieces over flour mixture and process until mixture is sandy and resembles very fine meal. With machine running on lowmed speed, gradually add molasses and milk;

mix until the dough is evenly moist and forms a soft mass.

parchment-lined cookie sheets, spacing them 3/4-inch apart.

Scrape the dough onto your work surface; divide in half. Work with one portion of dough at a time. Roll out dough between two large sheets of parchment paper until it is 1/4-inch thick. Leaving dough sandwiched between parchment layers, stack on cookie sheet and freeze until firm, 15 to 20 minutes. (Make-ahead: Instead of freezing the dough, refrigerate it for 2 hours or overnight.)

Bake cookies until the center is set and dough barely retains an imprint when touched very gently with fingertip, 8 to 11 minutes, rotating cookie sheet from front to back halfway through baking time. Do not over bake.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Remove cookie sheets from oven and leave cookies to cool on sheets for 2 minutes, then remove with a spatula and move to a wire rack to allow the cookies to cool to room temperature.

Remove one dough sheet from the freezer; place on work surface. Peel off the top parchment sheet and lay it back in place. Flip dough over; peel off and discard second parchment layer. Cut dough into desired shapes; transfer to

Once cookies are cool, decorate as desired. Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature, or freeze them in a doublewrapped container. Stored at room temperature, the cookies will keep for up to one week.

pressive centrepiece, or a display of meaningful pieces that represent the season to you. Use your tree as a showcase

Gold and black popped up a lot last Christmas and should be back again this year. Frosty blues and whites continue to be hugely popular. For the more adventurous, some of the hues that struck a chord in the fashion world this year are also making their way to ornaments, including jewel tones and teal. A Christmas tree lends itself well to displaying some unique pieces. It can also make a bold statement about a family’s interests by including movie characters and even sports teams – after all, if the family wears their team colors with pride, why can’t their tree wear them, too? native to plastics – are growing in popularity and help add a homemade, old-fashioned element to seasonal decor, along with Mother Nature’s own branches and pinecones. Tired of your dated tree decorations? Simply cover the tree with LED white lights and keep it ornament-free for a naturalist look. Finally, don’t create unnecessary trash by throwing out your old decorations, either – reuse them. Breathe new life into old ball ornaments by placing them in a large glass bowl or vase to add a splash of color without spending a dime. Some flat ornaments might lend themselves well to being used as unique gift tags. And a little paint or even some decoupage can help some tired-looking ornaments make a career comeback and find their way back to the top branches of your tree.
