The Woodbine Tigers are ready to return to the eight man field after a winning 2009 season, finishing 6-4. And they’re bringing some strong players and experience to the 2010 season. “I expect to be very competitive this season as we return a solid core of players from our last season’s team,”Woodbine head coach Jason Strong said. Since finishing the 2009 season, the team has been diligent in getting ahead for the 2010 season. The extra work seems to be paying off in pregame practices. “The boys worked hard in the weight room all summer and are showing a high level of commitment to success early

on in practice thus far,” Strong said. Starting quarterback, 6 feet, 185 pound senior Zach Archer will be returning to the field after being named to the All District Second Team in 2009. Archer will be playing double roles, aiding the team on defense as well as a defensive back. And he’s bringing All District company with him. Sophomore Kyle Kuhlman, at 6 feet, 1 inch and 190 will be returning on both sides of the field as well, as a tailback and a linebacker. Senior Spencer Ball, standing 6 feet 2 inches at 240, will be with both teammates on the field while standing in on the offensive and defensive See TIGERS, Page 4

line. Kuhlman and Ball both return as Second Team All District winners as well. Honorable Mention All District teammate and senior Austin Quick (5’9”, 145) will also start for the black and gold as a defensive end and tight end. Others returning to the line for Woodbine include: senior Jacolby Ehlert, 6’2”, 250 pounds, offensive and defensive line; sophomore Josh Metusik, 5’9”, 145 pounds, defensive end; and sophomore Sam Powers, 5’10”, 150 pounds, defensive back. Returning starters aren’t all that are lending strength to the Tiger team. Alton Dickinson,

Gavvon Shafer, Corey Caddell, Mason Mentink, Darin Peterson and Matt Monahan will return to the gridiron as returning lettermen. While returning players are offering a plethora of experience, there are a few holes in the team’s ideals this season. “We should have an explosive offense with many players that have substantial experience the past two seasons,” Strong said.“Defensively, we have to replace all three linebackers from the last season, which is probably the biggest question mark going into the season.” Strong pointed out the team’s strength in the 2010 season will

be their versatility, with several players able to tackle more than one position. Regardless of which position the player enters on the field,Woodbine fans should expect to see action. “We are emphasizing to the players that we expect a physical level of play this season as we try to take the next step and win a district championship and win in the postseason,” Strong said.“I am excited about our potential so far and am looking forward to begin play in what will be a very tough district from top to bottom.” Strong, now in his fifth year will be backed by Matt Mentink and Don Alvis with aid from

managers Anna Kohl and Danny Willis. Action for the Tigers begins Aug. 27 against East Mills in Malvern. The game should prove entertaining for fans on both sides after East Mills finished a 7-2 2009 season. The Tiger’s first district match up will follow on Sept. 3 at home against the Whiting Warriors. Both the coaches and players have high expectations for the season. “Expectations are the highest they have been in the past five seasons,” Strong said.“We will continue to coach hard work, discipline and improvement from week to week as the season progresses.”

The Logan-Magnolia Panthers will enter the 2010 season ranked fourth in Iowa’s Class IA pre-season polls. While that sounds like a positive position to be in, head coach Matt Straight, in his 10th year as head coach, recognizes those rankings are heavily weighted with teams from the local district. “Our schedule will be our biggest challenge this year,” Straight said. “We might have the toughest district in the state IA’s so we will need to be

ready every week.” The season begins with two 2A teams with strong traditions: Missouri Valley and Clarinda. The district schedule, including away games at Treynor, Underwood and St. Albert will be tough. Anchoring the team will be seniors Evan Mikels and Levi Ettleman, who both earned All-State recognition last year. Seniors Marrick Loftus and Nolan Oviatt will join Mikels in the backfield as returning starters. Dillon Miller, Travis Jones, Jacob Winther, Ben Kill and Nate Morton, all seniors, return in the offensive line.

Senior Troy Sodders, who started at wide receiver and defensive back, along with Zach Hatcher, will play a big part in the success of the Panthers this season. Juniors Dominic Snyder, Quin Mann and Nate Fender are two juniors who started last year. Straight, along with assistants Shad Hornbeck, Joe Cooper, John Peschel, Brian Koenig and Jeff Kuhl have been building on the Panthers’ ability to stop the opponents’ game. “Our weakness over the past several seasons has been stopping people with a strong passing game,” Straight said. The key to success, according to Straight is, “To have big plays on offense. Last year we moved the ball and gained a lot of first downs, but it is difficult to put up a lot of points if you have no big plays.” The Panthers begin their season Aug. 27 with a game at Missouri Valley.

Big Reds: Same action, new coach PATRICK DONOHUE OWH NEWS SERVICE Missouri Valley fans can expect the same quality football they’re used to this fall, only this year, they’ll see a fresh face on the sidelines coaching the Big Reds. Ryan Victor takes over as coach following Brian Knott’s 14-year tenure as the head man. Knott built a fine tradition in Missouri Valley, leading the Big Reds to seven state playoff appearances. While Victor may be new to the community, he’s an experienced coach, having coached at St. Peter Claver High School in Omaha, Neb. and Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Neb. Victor has brought in some new schemes and philosophies that may be different for the players, but he’s been happy with how his pupils have adjusted to his methods. “They’re willing to accept new things,”Victor said.“Some of what we’re doing on offense is different from what they’ve done in the past. Acceptance and change is the main thing I’ve noticed. “We’re a little more of a multiple offense. We’re not solely just one style of offense; we have plenty of options.” One option that Mo.Valley fans will miss this season is running back Nick Monzu and quarterback Dustin Nelson. Monzu ran for over 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns last year while Nelson rushed for 880 yards and passed for 846 while accounting for 17 scores. Victor will turn to senior Jole Miller at quarterback. Miller’s workload was limited as a junior, and Victor said he’s been impressed with his signal caller’s poise and maturity. “He brings toughness, work ethic and leadership qualities,”Victor said.“Those are all things you need in a quarterback, especially in a system where we don’t know who our running back is.” Victor hasn’t settled yet on his backfield. He indicated that senior Brian Dougherty and junior Daniel Waterhouse each will get carries at running back. Defensively,Victor said the Big Reds will line up in a 5-2 scheme. Senior Cody West, who was second on the team with 76 tackles in 2009, should provide a strong foundation. “We’re looking for guys who are willing to fly around, hit people and make the plays Missouri Valley has prided itself on in previous years,”Victor said. Adjusting to a new team and community has taken some time for Victor. But judging from preseason workouts, that meshing process could lead to positive results for the Big Reds. “The biggest change is going from a prep school in the city to a smaller one,”Victor said.“We’ve got kids here who are willing to work. They take their football and tradition pretty seriously here. These kids know what’s been laid down for them, and they want to continue that tradition.”

Eight may be Boyer Valley football coach Jay Petersen’s favorite number. The Bulldogs enter their first season playing EightMan football, and it’s a new opportunity that excites the ninth-year coach. “It’s going to be a lot different for us,” Petersen said. “I think that’s the biggest thing to account for. We’re going to be doing a whole lot of stuff differently from what we’ve been doing offensively.” Among players lost to graduation was Ryan Schaben, who rushed for 1,668 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2009. Senior quarterback Adam Hadden returns under center. With Schaben gone, Petersen said Hadden’s role should increase both on the ground and through the air. One of the deeper areas of the BV roster is its offensive line. Juniors Nick Miller and Cole McAllister should proShow That Bulldog Pride!

It’s a whole new ballgame for us. We’re just trying to learn and teach Eight-Man to the kids. They’re enjoying it and looking forward to the season.” The biggest adjustment for the Bulldogs may come on defense. Miller and McAllister will be large factors again, just a year after combining for 124 tackles, but Petersen said his squad needs to get used to playing with three fewer players. “Defensively, when you look at it, it’s pretty easy to figure out why there’s 40-50 points a game (in Eight-

Man),” Petersen. “There’s not a whole lot of 15-yard runs. Once you get past that line of scrimmage, you lose those three extra guys in the secondary and it’s a lot more wide open game.” Regardless of all the changes, the move to EightMan has impacted the Dunlap community positively. “It’s been good, and our numbers have been good with 33 kids out,” Petersen said. “It’s promoted a lot more competition at positions. The kids have been looking forward to this and the community is, too. We’re playing Woodbine, Charter Oak and Ar-We-Va, so there’s a lot of local schools that we don’t have to travel all over the state to play. “This fits our identity very well. Our kids are very much looking forward to it.”

PATRICK DONOHUE OWH NEWS SERVICE Last season hasn’t dimmed West Harrison football coach Craig Birdsall’s optimism. The Hawkeyes endured a difficult 2009 campaign, failing to win a game. But nearly all of their skilled players are back this fall. While last season was difficult for the players and coaches to endure, it helped build some team character. “We started playing better defensively at the end of last year,” Birdsall said. “Sometimes the scores didn’t look

like it, but I think they’ve got a grasp on what it’s going to take to win a game this year.” Senior quarterback Ryan Mauseth returns after throwing for 1,049 yards and six touchdowns last fall. Joe Roden, Ethan Earlywine and Lucas Christensen return in the backfield and will share time at running back. “We’ve got a good senior class and a good freshmen class coming in,” West Harrison coach Craig Birdsall said. “We’ll have a lot of team speed, and we’re hoping to utilize that. Our skill positions are pretty solid. We’re

just hoping to get our linemen to block for them.” While Birdsall is thrilled to have so much experience returning, he’d like to see his backfield set specific personal goals for themselves. “I would like to see some 100-yard games from them; there’s no reason we can’t do it,” Birdsall said. “Joe is a lot bigger and stronger than he was last year.” There’s much to be happy with offensively, but the most pressing needs are on the other side of the ball. The Hawkeyes must make defensive improvements this season to give them-

selves winning opportunities. West Harrison allowed 47 points a game last season, but new defensive coordinator Rick Barker, who came from FremontMills, has worked well with his new pupils. “He coached there for several years and also coached at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, so he’s got a good grasp on the defense,” Birdsall said. “He’s made comments to me that this is the fastest high school defense he’s had.” West Harrison opens its season Aug. 27 against West Monona.
