To reduce our carbon footprint further we’ve now adopted a policy with a range of green initiatives for conserving energy and reducing waste. Welcome to The Blue Room Theatre Season One, 2012 I am very pleased to present our new Season of productions following hot on the heels of Summer Nights as part of FRINGE WORLD. As I write this we are meeting with artists to help them prepare submissions for Season Two – The Blue Room Theatre is always a bustling hub of artistic adventures. Season One features two significant partnerships: Melbourne-based Nicola Gunn’s production of Hello my name is presented in association with Theatre Works, Victoria; and Yirra Yaakin will co-produce the final weeks of this Season, coinciding with NAIDOC Week, presenting workshops and performances by and for independent indigenous performing arts practitioners. We welcome back producers who have been travelling with previous Blue Room Theatre productions: Humphrey Bower, fresh from his Australian Performing Arts Market performance of Wish, will present a redevelopment of his awardwinning solo Skin; and returning from the Italian

premiere of his play Horse Head, Damon Lockwood will produce and feature in his latest darkly comic offering, I (Honestly) Love You. Other Season highlights include Luminaire, a character study of light by cutting edge theatre makers Renegade Productions; the new psychological drama Red Silk written by Lois Achimovich and directed by nationally renowned Aarne Neeme; a new collaboration between Dawn Pascoe and Nicky Candy, incorporating aerial skills, in a highly physical telling of the tragic tale John Gavin; and film writer/director Wade K Savage makes the transition to stage with Les Affreux, a thriller of a theatrical debut. In the 1960s Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Sexton was the highest paid poet in the US. To her many friends and lovers she was beautiful, witty and engaging. But there was a dark side to her life, alluded to in her writing. Considerable controversy surrounding the revelations of abuse in her family, and her later psychiatric treatment, mirrored the experiences of many women. The controversy did not cease after her death.

Martin (Luke Hewitt) has referred his patient, Anne, to another psychiatrist, Ted (Dan Luxton). When Martin calls Ted and Anne for a meeting, his motives are unclear. Anne describes it as a nice collegial discussion between the two men with herself as the subject. But the agenda is much more sinister than she could imagine. Perth-born stage and screen actor Roz Hammond (Muriel’s Wedding; Best Female Performance, Dublin Fringe; The Librarians) returns to The Blue Room Theatre after twenty years away to play the pivotal role of Anne in a fictional view of what may have happened in that room.

In the early hours of Easter Saturday 1844, John Gavin became the first European to be executed in our Swan River Colony. He was tried, convicted and hanged within three days and buried without ceremony in an unmarked grave in the Fremantle sandhills. He was 15 years old. A daring new collaboration between aerialist Dawn Pascoe and actor Nick Candy will produce a dynamic retelling of this landmark West Australian story. “God grant that awful example made on so young a lad, may ever be before the minds of all of us young or old.” Highly skilled aerial theatre, dramatic reconstruction and physical performance will re-animate John Gavin and his twisted adolescent dreams. The story will flip and spin, trample and tumble into your lap leaving you wondering which way is up, which was my seat, and did that young boy really deserve to hang?

An actor in search of inspiration at a remote salt-lake in Western Australia gets more than he bargained for. “Dreamtime not once-upon-a-time; Dreamtime still here.” Humphrey Bower is a multi-award-winning actor, writer and director. Originally performed at La Mama in Melbourne, Skin received nominations in Green Room Award categories Best Solo Performer and Best New Writing for the Australian Stage.

This series of monologues is the first collaboration between emerging writer Michelle White and Deadly Award winning co-writer/performer Karla Hart, drawing from the pair’s own real life experiences. Access The Blue Room Theatre’s performance spaces and bar on the first floor via our internal lift from the street level box office foyer. Guide dogs are welcome and we also honour Companion Cards. If you require wheelchair access to our theatres, please advise The Blue Room Theatre office during business hours. The Blue Room Theatre Box Office opens one hour prior to each performance and accepts cash, credit card and eftpos; though door sales are often available, they are not guaranteed. We employ a paperless ticketing system, using re-useable plastic “slapbands” for entry to the performance spaces. Tickets purchased in advance must be
collected at least 10 minutes prior to show start time or may be returned to sale. Tertiary students who present their Guild Membership card are eligible for $10 Student Rush tickets only in the 10 minutes prior to show start time and subject to availability. School students (senior high school and tertiary) are welcome at the special price of $15 per student. Receive one teacher ticket FREE with every ten student tickets. Running late? Phone ahead. Some shows will admit latecomers during a suitable break in the performance. Others employ a strict “no latecomers” policy and offer no refunds or exchanges.
Seating in The Blue Room Theatre’s two performances spaces (40 and 60 seats) is unreserved. Adult content features in The Blue Room Theatre Seasons, intended for audiences aged 15 years and over unless otherwise stated. Many shows contain coarse language and adult themes. Please check any warnings at the time of booking. It’s not a big theatre. A solo performer on stage can fill up the room. You can feel their emotions in the unlit spaces of the theatre. And in the light you can see their words and the energy on their skin. From the front row you could reach out and touch them if you wanted to. But you wouldn’t.

The Blue Room Theatre Seasons As well as being a place for adventurous Perth audiences, The Blue Room Theatre (est.1989) is a vibrant membership-based resource and service organisation for independent performing arts workers: supporting play readings and professional development; providing affordable rehearsal space and admin resources, and an auspice service for small independent companies. Our core activity is The Blue Room Theatre Seasons (est. 1994), two seasons of eight productions over 10 months of each year, presented in our heritage building in Northbridge which contains two intimate, flexible performance spaces. A different peer panel selects each Season, with each show offered a three-week run with technical, producing and marketing support; a small development and professional fund; and 90% of their box office sales.
The ‘Best Production’ winner at the annual Blue Room Theatre Awards also receives a slot in a following Season or the equivalent amount of in-kind development support. Season shows have gone on to festivals and independent seasons around Australia and overseas in cities such as Adelaide, Melbourne, New York, Sydney, Toronto and Delhi.
