BLUE turning GREENER The Blue Room Theatre has a long-standing commitment to producing theatre sustainably. To reduce our carbon footprint further we’ve now adopted a policy with a range of green initiatives for conserving energy and reducing waste. If you’re reading this on screen you’ve already contributed by choosing to receive this brochure electronically rather than in hard copy. From now on our brochure will only be mailed to you in hard copy if you specifically opt-in by contacting mail@blueroom.org.au . So that we can measure our environmental impact effectively, and set targets to reduce it, we would also love for you to complete a survey when you visit us and tell us how you travelled to the theatre. If you are keen to get involved in other ways, please contact Karen Connolly via info@blueroom.org.au.

Welcome to The Blue Room Theatre Season One, 2012 I am very pleased to present our new Season of productions following hot on the heels of Summer Nights as part of FRINGE WORLD. As I write this we are meeting with artists to help them prepare submissions for Season Two – The Blue Room Theatre is always a bustling hub of artistic adventures. Season One features two significant partnerships: Melbourne-based Nicola Gunn’s production of Hello my name is presented in association with Theatre Works, Victoria; and Yirra Yaakin will co-produce the final weeks of this Season, coinciding with NAIDOC Week, presenting workshops and performances by and for independent indigenous performing arts practitioners. We welcome back producers who have been travelling with previous Blue Room Theatre productions: Humphrey Bower, fresh from his Australian Performing Arts Market performance of Wish, will present a redevelopment of his awardwinning solo Skin; and returning from the Italian

premiere of his play Horse Head, Damon Lockwood will produce and feature in his latest darkly comic offering, I (Honestly) Love You. Other Season highlights include Luminaire, a character study of light by cutting edge theatre makers Renegade Productions; the new psychological drama Red Silk written by Lois Achimovich and directed by nationally renowned Aarne Neeme; a new collaboration between Dawn Pascoe and Nicky Candy, incorporating aerial skills, in a highly physical telling of the tragic tale John Gavin; and film writer/director Wade K Savage makes the transition to stage with Les Affreux, a thriller of a theatrical debut. Hope you enjoy…

Kerry O’Sullivan, Acting Executive Director

Renegade Productions presents

Luminaire

Luminaire

13 – 31 mar

“Beauty is prejudice.” Luminaire is about seeing the forest for the trees; it tells the tale of two characters reminiscing on times of beauty, destruction and etch-asketch. Not your ordinary theatre experience, Luminaire considers light as a third performer on stage, exploring a range of experimental techniques and effects to create lighting sculptures and ‘lumiscapes’ that punctuate a vivid narrative. Luminaire marks Chris Donnelly’s return to Perth theatre from national and international tours – including award winning shows in the UK, New Zealand, and a Helpmann-nominated tour of Australia – to re-join his award winning Renegade comrades (The Blue Room Theatre Judges’ Choice 2011). Treat yourself to a night of indulgent storytelling with ground-breaking use of chemiluminescence designed to take your breath away.

Red Silk Productions presents

Red Silk

13 – 31 mar

In the 1960s Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Sexton was the highest paid poet in the US. To her many friends and lovers she was beautiful, witty and engaging. But there was a dark side to her life, alluded to in her writing. Considerable controversy surrounding the revelations of abuse in her family, and her later psychiatric treatment, mirrored the experiences of many women. The controversy did not cease after her death.

Red Silk

Martin (Luke Hewitt) has referred his patient, Anne, to another psychiatrist, Ted (Dan Luxton). When Martin calls Ted and Anne for a meeting, his motives are unclear. Anne describes it as a nice collegial discussion between the two men with herself as the subject. But the agenda is much more sinister than she could imagine. Perth-born stage and screen actor Roz Hammond (Muriel’s Wedding; Best Female Performance, Dublin Fringe; The Librarians) returns to The Blue Room Theatre after twenty years away to play the pivotal role of Anne in a fictional view of what may have happened in that room.

JOHN GAVIN

17 APR – 5 MAY

Nick Candy & Natural Wings present

John Gavin

In the early hours of Easter Saturday 1844, John Gavin became the first European to be executed in our Swan River Colony. He was tried, convicted and hanged within three days and buried without ceremony in an unmarked grave in the Fremantle sandhills. He was 15 years old. A daring new collaboration between aerialist Dawn Pascoe and actor Nick Candy will produce a dynamic retelling of this landmark West Australian story. “God grant that awful example made on so young a lad, may ever be before the minds of all of us young or old.” Highly skilled aerial theatre, dramatic reconstruction and physical performance will re-animate John Gavin and his twisted adolescent dreams. The story will flip and spin, trample and tumble into your lap leaving you wondering which way is up, which was my seat, and did that young boy really deserve to hang?

Night Train presents

SKIN

24 APR – 12 maY

From the makers of Wish (Winner, The Blue Room Theatre Members’ Choice 2011 and Blue Stone Award for Outstanding Individual Performance) Skin – two tales of transformation – promises intimate, visceral, stripped-back storytelling theatre dealing with identity and difference, on our doorstep and in our own backyard. A hairdresser on holiday in Vietnam undergoes a surprising metamorphosis. “He stripped down to his underpants, listening to the duet for piano and ceiling-fan, and wondering what was coming next.”

SKIN

An actor in search of inspiration at a remote salt-lake in Western Australia gets more than he bargained for. “Dreamtime not once-upon-a-time; Dreamtime still here.” Humphrey Bower is a multi-award-winning actor, writer and director. Originally performed at La Mama in Melbourne, Skin received nominations in Green Room Award categories Best Solo Performer and Best New Writing for the Australian Stage.

“Are you there? It doesn’t matter. I already know you are. I know you are listening to this. Do you think you got out? Do you think this is where it stops? I can see you. Hello my name is

12 – 30 JUN

Nicola Gunn in association with Theatre Works presents

Hello my name is

Hello my name is wants to get to know you in a non-threatening, conversational type way. It’s warm like a spring day and unexpectedly fun like a game of table tennis. It is set in a community centre, which is just a room we’ll call a community centre. We hope you can join us. Melbourne-based creator Nicola Gunn, a UK Stage Award nominee (Best Solo Performer, 2011 Edinburgh Fringe), makes emotionally and visually evocative work with subversive humour about the complexities and mysteries of everyday life. “Delivered brilliantly… her performance gleefully jumps the line between genius and madness... A real delight for the discerning, and so good that you might walk out.” - THREEWEEKS, Edinburgh This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding advisory body, the Besen Family Foundation, Maximised by Chunky Move, Dancehouse, La Mama Theatre and Theatre Works.

This series of monologues is the first collaboration between emerging writer Michelle White and Deadly Award winning co-writer/performer Karla Hart, drawing from the pair’s own real life experiences. A raw, emotional and at times irreverent look at race, identity and what it’s like to actually want to be proud of identifying as Aboriginal. Contains coarse language.

THEATRE SIGNS THE WAY

MEET THE ARTISTS

The Blue Room Theatre is proud to be partnering with Sign Language Communications WA, a division of the WA Deaf Society, to present a series of Auslan interpreted performances this Season (check individual show pages for dates).

It’s not a big theatre. A solo performer on stage can fill up the room. You can feel their emotions in the unlit spaces of the theatre. And in the light you can see their words and the energy on their skin. From the front row you could reach out and touch them if you wanted to. But you wouldn’t.

Our thanks go to the team at SLC WA for helping us make these events possible.

Satisfy your curiosity about the methods in the madness of theatre making at our Meet the Artist nights. Find out more about the people who create your theatrical experiences: about the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How; tell them in person why you like what they do; or find out how to stage a production yourself! The 2nd Wednesday of each show (check individual show pages for dates) is Meet the Artists night. The bonus is, these intimate, 20-30 minute post-performance gatherings are available to attend at no extra cost. Strictly limited capacity. Book early at www.blueroom.org.au.

The Blue Room Theatre Seasons As well as being a place for adventurous Perth audiences, The Blue Room Theatre (est.1989) is a vibrant membership-based resource and service organisation for independent performing arts workers: supporting play readings and professional development; providing affordable rehearsal space and admin resources, and an auspice service for small independent companies. Our core activity is The Blue Room Theatre Seasons (est. 1994), two seasons of eight productions over 10 months of each year, presented in our heritage building in Northbridge which contains two intimate, flexible performance spaces. A different peer panel selects each Season, with each show offered a three-week run with technical, producing and marketing support; a small development and professional fund; and 90% of their box office sales.

The ‘Best Production’ winner at the annual Blue Room Theatre Awards also receives a slot in a following Season or the equivalent amount of in-kind development support. Season shows have gone on to festivals and independent seasons around Australia and overseas in cities such as Adelaide, Melbourne, New York, Sydney, Toronto and Delhi.

Season applications are called twice yearly. See www.blueroom.org.au for details. ‘Like’ us on Facebook, or become a member (see back pages) so you never miss an application round. For more info contact Associate Producer Renee Newman-Storen: renee@blueroom.org.au.

Own a piece of the action In providing a continuous, diverse program of contemporary performance, The Blue Room Theatre contributes towards the cultural, social and economic ecology of Perth, WA and Australia. To continue and improve on doing the best we can for you, we rely on funding and philanthropic donations. Every ticket you buy directly supports WA’s independent professional theatre makers. And our Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status means any donation over $2 is 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
