I would like to announce a few changes for 2013. Nonney Oddlokken will be stepping down as creative director of the magazine. When I first bought the magazine over 2 years ago, I was new to the industry and desperately in need of guidance. Of course, I wasn’t aware of this small fact. Nonney came on board and helped me to re-brand, and turn the Nola Wedding Guide around with her creative vision and passion for pure artistry. She believes in the power and magic of creativity and artistry and is willing to fight or go to any length to capture it. She has an incredible spirit and is a true artist in every sense of the word. I will be forever grateful to her and Ole. With a daughter in college and the challenges of her photography business always looming, she thought it best that she step down at this time. She has handed the creative ball off to me and my goal is to keep the magazine at the level that she inspired. It will not be easy, but with the incredible inspiration that she has infused into our pages over the last two years, I will continue down the path of artistic freedom that she cleared for us.

[ a warning for all brides ] I
am alarmed and concerned at what the wedding industry in New Orleans has become. When I started in the industry many years ago, there was a real sense of magic and honor about just being involved in the wedding industry. To be a part of someone’s wedding day is a privilege that should never be taken for granted. Greed, financial gain, and out of control egos have contributed to making the wedding industry in the New Orleans area less than it was. It has become less and less about the bride and more and more about money and material wealth. These are some examples of what the industry has become: Wedding vendors have become rock stars with the sanctity of marriage being lost on them. Vendor cliques have been formed that exclude and demean everyone not special enough to be included. A so-called wedding photographer was almost jailed for not giving multiple brides their pictures. A vendor in a specialized field is taking 6 – 10 weddings per weekend knowing that each bride is not getting what they are promised upon booking. Wedding bands have failed to show up to play music at weddings
Expect the service that you pay for. Don’t settle for being someone’s 5th wedding of the day. If the person that you are considering cannot be at your wedding due to a prior commitment, then find someone who can. Don’t allow your vendors to drink all night at your wedding. Make sure that the wedding band you hire has the same people in it all the time and has great references. Expect and demand professionalism of all of your vendors including the way they dress, their language, their communication with you, etc…If a vendor is not returning your phone calls, find one who will. You are simply not important enough to them. Do not always settle for the least expensive option when shopping for wedding vendors. Make appointments with vendors that intrigue you on all levels of the price spectrum to see the difference in their work. You can then discern whether the extra cost is worth it or not. Your wedding day should be one of the greatest days of your life and fill you with great thoughts and memories that last a lifetime. I want that to be your experience! There is some good news:
Reception halls are charging brides for a premium bar and pouring inexpensive alcohol into premium bottles
There are still many great, experienced, professional wedding vendors in this city who respect the sanctity of one’s wedding day! Do not settle for less!
The list goes on. It is more important than ever that all brides be extremely diligent in your wedding vendor hires.

hen Christine Champagne was in the market for a new business venture, she knew that she wanted to open a franchise. She felt like a proven formula would increase her odds of success. As Christine researched Gigi’s Cupcakes, she fell in love with the product and thought the timing was perfect. She thought that the advantage of the Gigi’s Cupcake franchise was that it would appeal to our local market, which has always had a strong hometown bakery bond. Evidently, she was right. Christine has just celebrated her first year doing business as Gigi’s Cupcakes in Harvey and has had a tremendously positive response from the local community.

Gigi’s Cupcakes was founded in 2008, in Nashville, Tennessee by Gina Butler. While pursuing a singing career, Gina cleaned houses by day and sang at night. She would occasionally bake for her clients and family and they would rave about her delicious cupcakes. Under the urging of her brother, she started her own bakery. Success was immediate. In just 4 years, Gigi’s Cupcakes is the fastest growing cupcake franchise in America operating over 80 stores nationwide. We recently sat down with Christine to ask her about her business and how she is enjoying working in the wedding industry.
NWG: What types of services can you provide? We cater to all types of events - weddings, showers, bridal luncheons, or corporate parties. We deliver, with a four-dozen minimum, so we can make things easier for you during your event. We definitely have an attention to detail. We can personalize your cupcakes both with decoration and flavor, with over 100 varieties to choose from. We also have monograming. We offer cupcakes as an alternative for your wedding cake and can decorate with feathers, pearls, flowers and more. We will certainly work with you. You may also give the cupcakes as favors at your wedding. The advantage of doing cupcakes over the traditional wedding cake is about a $4

way. She was meticulous about every detail. She was just so happy with us, from the flavor choices to the pricing to the cupcake wrappers. Her fiancé was so sweet too. He even wanted to drive our delivery van! NWG: Is there anything that you want our readers to know about you or Gigi’s Cupcakes? Well, our motto is, “spreading love, one cupcake at a time.” The relationships that we build, coupled with the consistency in our product, makes for an enduring recipe. We are very family oriented and treat our customers as such. My daughter worked here while she was pregnant for my grandson and we had a customer who would always come in and talk to her. After she had the baby, the lady brought in a quilt and a teddy bear that she handmade. She always asks about my daughter and grandson when she comes in. It’s like she’s part of our extended family. I also have the best staff! I am very happy with them and proud of them. I have an A team!

NWG: What is the largest or strangest order you’ve received? The largest order we’ve had was for 1200 cupcakes for a “Cupcakes and Cocktails” event. The most unique order we’ve had so far was for a little girl’s birthday party. She wanted 25 pair of stiletto heels cupcakes.

NWG: What separates you from other companies that offer cupcakes for weddings? Our customer service is first and foremost. The customer comes first. Brides are already pretty emotional at the excitement and stress of planning their weddings. We want to lessen her stress. We recently had a bride that lived in San Antonio, but was having her wedding here. She had just had a tasting at another cupcake bakery and she ended up in tears. She said that the owner had set up the appointment with her, but the person that she met with at her appointment was not the owner and didn’t have any knowledge on her situation. As she went through with the appointment, she noticed that every cupcake had a lemon taste to it, including the frosting. It just was a completely bad experience for her. he idea of a wedding registry once involved kiosks and long lines in department stores, but those days have swiftly come to an end. Technology has reinvented the way modern brides think of wedding registries forever. The steps that a bride takes, from announcing engagements to choosing a style of china, can now all be done online. Brides now have access to international stores and the convenience of linking all registries into one, central location. Timelines One should start the registry process about 6-12 months prior to the wedding. When beginning, it’s a great idea to send out registry announcement cards. These cards will help your guests to get an idea of what types of gifts you’re expecting, and to better manage their time in choosing one. Below is a registry timeline to help you with organizing and making your registry experience more efficient for everyone. Websites A few websites to help you with the registry process are: myregistry.com, weddingchannel.com, theknot. com, giftregistry360.com and amazon.com. Most of these sites contain options that allow you to create your own wedding page, send registry updates to social networking sites, and consolidate all registered stores into one. When choosing registry locations, be sure to check the exchange/return policy. This important step can save you trouble if you have to return any duplicate or broken items that you receive. Theknot.com offers an interactive checklist, which makes it virtually impossible for you to forget wedding registry essentials. The convenience of these websites is also shared with your guests in that they don’t have to leave the house to purchase a gift. Smart phones now have applications like “Gift Registry 360 Scan & Add,” which has the capability to scan and add items instantly to the bride’s registry.

Send registry announcements and let your family and friends spread the word. 1 month: If you are moving, be sure to update your shipping address at all of your registry locations. Do a final update of your registry. 3-4 weeks post wedding: It’s thank you card time and most registry sites will include a tracker so that you won’t forget anyone.
Organizing Your wedding registry should be comprised of several categories, including: kitchen, bathroom, home improvement, décor, and appliances. Websites will help you narrow down and organize your needs by providing suggestions and subcategories. From these subcategories, it will be easier for you to decide on styles and other specifics. Consult with your fiancé on registry items and decide as a couple on the wants and needs of your future home. It can be tempting to choose only lavish, expensive things to furnish your new life, but it’s important to be considerate of your guests’ budgets. It’s okay to choose some big-ticket

Spending time with my mom and my best friends planning for my big day was my favorite thing about planning. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Derek and I participated in the day for the engaged but he left the planning up to my mom and me. What was your first dance song? Our first dance was to “Angle Eye’s” by the Jeff Healy Band. VEAL CHOP JILL:
2 (12-14 ounce) veal chops, on the bone ½ cup all-purpose flour Salt and black pepper 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 cups arugula Lemon halves
Slicing down with a knife, butterfly the chops. Spread the “wings” on either side and pound out until very thin. Coat with flour, shaking off any excess, and season with salt and pepper. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet and spread out each veal chop to brown, turning once, about 3 minutes in all. Set on a baking sheet and finished cooking in a preheated 425-degree oven, 10-12 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the uncooked sauce by combining all ingredients in a mixing bowl. To serve, top each veal chop with arugula and then spoon on the sauce. Garnish with lemon halves and drizzle with olive oil. Serves 2.

“I want professional photos of my wedding, but my brother’s friend’s cousin’s daughter’s babysitter just got a really nice digital camera and she’ll take photos of us and give me a disk of all the images for only $90. She has a website and a Facebook page, so she is legit.” Here is an analogy for you: have bad hair. It’s too thick, and a bad ashy brown color. My brother’s friend’s cousin’s daughter’s babysitter, Jackie, will cut, weave and blow-dry my hair for $90. My other option is going to Jeff, the hair stylist at the salon across the street. He charges me $250 for a cut, weave and blow-dry. I decide to try both.

I’m sitting in Jackie’s laundry room waiting for her to gather her things when I realize she’s going to wash my hair in the utility sink. Leaning over the sink while kneeling on a folding chair proves a little difficult; she gets shampoo in my eye and water drips down my neck into my shirt. We go into the house and she sits me down in her dining room; her husband is sitting on the couch watching NASCAR and drinking a 40. He leans forward to grab a bag of chips and I notice his butt-crack. I remind myself that since Jackie only charges $90, she probably can’t afford to rent a station in a salon, and so I divert my eyes and forgive her. She begins to cut my hair. It seems to be taking quite a while. She looks a little nervous. I remember that she’s still fairly new to cutting hair. I rationalize that she’s still better than I’d be at it. Plus, she has like 500 fans on her Facebook page, and that has to mean something, right? Jackie disappears to mix my color. She’s gone for a long time. I get nervous that she doesn’t know what she’s doing. What if she screws it up and my hair falls out? I start to wonder… maybe there is a REASON why she only charges $90. Is that

the only way she can get clients? Then Jackie weaves a beautiful blond into my hair. I try to forget about my nerves and begin to get excited. A cut and color for only 90 bucks, I can’t wait to show everyone my hair! She finishes up the blow-dry and I turn to the mirror to discover that my hair is really yellow and brassy. The cut is uneven and boxy. I take a deep breath and calm myself down. Well, it looks better than it did before, I guess, and I only paid $90. The next day I meet up with some girlfriends for drinks. No one says anything about my hair, and I’m afraid to ask what they think because I know it just looks average, or maybe even bad. I feel disappointed. $90 seemed like such a great deal. I suppose it’s only a deal if the value is greater than $90. Two months pass and I find myself sitting at Jeff’s station in the salon across the street. The receptionist offers me a cold drink and the most recent issue of People magazine. Jeff comes over, introduces himself and asks me what I’d like to accomplish today. We talk for a few minutes about the specific color of blond I’m looking for. He asks me questions about how I style my hair, what I like, what I don’t like, and tells me a little about what’s in style right now. Jeff seems as excited as I am for my new look. I look around to see all the latest flat irons, blow- dryers, collections of brushes and combs. Jeff rattles off instructions to his assistant while examining my hair and she’s back in a jiffy with 4 bowls of color. As Jeff begins to weave in and out of my hair with light blond and medium honey and chestnut brown I close my eyes and listen to the calming music on the satellite radio. I feel relaxed and confident. I trust him. I sit with my hair under the dryer and once again I’m offered a cold drink and a magazine. Jeff comes over to inspect the progression of the

The difference was the experience and the quality. The $250 that Jeff charged me included a cold diet coke, a comfy chair, state-of-the-art equipment and supplies, experience, knowledge, and a quality product. It included a feeling of pride and excitement that lasted until it was time to return for more. The $90 Jackie charged me included cheap dye, dull scissors, a wet shirt and a butt-crack. When I thought about it later, I thought, well wouldn’t it be great to find someone who was somewhere in between, you know, someone who is amazing and cheap? But the problem is there is no such thing as in between. When someone offers quality, they have to charge for it, they have to cover the cost of running the business, continuing education, supplies, marketing and they have to cut themselves a paycheck. Otherwise they are not running a business.

color. He exclaims how perfect it looks and brings me to the shampoo station. There is a big cushy leather recliner. I put my head back and he begins to wash. The shampoo smells like mint and lavender and he spends an extra few minutes on a mini scalp massage. Jeff dries and styles my hair with ease. When he’s finished he spins my chair around and I hardly recognize myself in the mirror. I look like I belong in a fashion magazine. The cut frames my face perfectly. It’s sassy with a hint of modern, just the right amount to suit my style. The color shimmers as I turn my head. It seems almost as if there are thousands of shades of blond intertwined throughout the locks of hair. It reminds me of what my hair looked like when I was little, after spending all summer in the sun. I feel proud. I meet up with some friends for lunch the next day. They must have commented on my hair 10 times. One of them demanded Jeff’s phone number and asked me how much he charged. “$250, I told her. She replied, “Well it looks a-MAZE-ing, what a great deal.”
So if you find yourself presented with what seems like a “great deal” for a wedding vendor that tells you that their competitors’ prices are exorbitant, ask yourself if the $90 is worth an experience with Jackie. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that aerobic exercise should be between three-to-five times per week. Depending on intensity of the workout, each session should last between 20 to 60 minutes, and performed in no less than 10-minute durations of time. They further recommend that for higher intensity workouts keep your heart rate between “55/65 percent – 90 percent of maximal heart rate, or for lower intensity workouts, a range of 55 – 64 percent of maximal heart rate.” A general rule to calculate your maximal rate is 220 – your age.
Top Five Reasons People Exercise s you plan a wedding, I feel it is always a great idea to plan how you are going to incorporate exercise into your life and marriage. As you try to fold into a program that works for both of you, remember that exercise is a very individualistic choice. Even in marriage we all have different goals, health status, time available, and motivations to stay or become fit. What I want everyone to know is that no matter what, it is vital that you carve time in your week to exercise.
Now that you know how easy it is to effectively exercise, let’s take a look at the reasons and avenues people take for exercise. The top five reasons are: Work – Although the amount of people getting the appropriate amount of exercise is decreasing, there was a time when manual labor was the bulk of the workforce. Now as more tasks are done with computers and equipment, there is less of a need for these types of jobs. But, for those who do, exercising through work is excellent. Health – Exercise is the best-kept secret for preventative medicine. It provides protection against many of the diseases that plague our society. Recreation – If you are having fun and exercising at the same time, you can easily fill your requirements. Recreational exercise is a very good stress reliever and helps to refresh the mind. Competition – Many choose exercise because they are competing in specific sport. Whether you are on a sports team, training for a race or participate in an organized “pick-up” game, learn how to build your exercise so that you peak when its time to compete. Appearance – Exercise for appearance is among the top reasons people exercise. Although you can’t selectively shed fat from your belly, butt or thighs, you can use calisthenics and strength training to firm up muscles. This will make you look thinner and better. One of the biggest hurdles people need to move past is the mental side of getting motivated. It is easy to come up with reasons why you can’t exercise today, but just know that putting off exercise today can significantly impair your health today, tomorrow and certainly down the road as you age. The most important thing to know, however, is that exercising is easier than you think. I recommend you mix daily activities, formal workouts, and sports play to get cardiovascular training along with the strength and flexibility training needed for health. And for best results, do some stretching nearly every day and some strength training two or three times a week. The older we get, the more we need these supplementary activities. And as the years roll on, most of us will also benefit from some simple exercises to improve balance and prevent falling, a major health problem for seniors.

ith every season, comes new inspiration in design and fashion. The season dictates the type of materials and textiles used and the shapes and cuts of garments. The change of season also brings a new palette of colors to creatively combine and coordinate. Pantone, the world-renowned authority on color, recently released its Spring 2013 Fashion Color Report. These will be the predominant colors for the entire fashion world this season, including wedding fashion. Since Pantone is the standard language for color communication, from designer all the way down to consumer, most bridal dress shops will carry dresses in these colors. You may want to consider this report when selecting bridesmaids, mother of the bride/groom and flower girl dresses. These will also be the colors for linens and other textiles such as plastics, so you will probably encounter them when searching for table linens, chair coverings and tabletop items.

[ wedding dress storage ] It was love at first sight, the perfect fit for your perfect day - your wedding dress. Although you wore it only once, if you take as much care in preserving your wedding dress as you did in choosing it, then it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for years to come-symbolizing love and family. Here are a few tips to keep your beloved garment as beautiful as the day you wore it. 1.
You can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time.
2.
Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.
3. If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hard-to-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper. 4. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. Stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). Store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places. 5. For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid-free cardboard “dress shaper� and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. Stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Gretna, LA Wise Bride: No, you should register only once but make your registry large enough so that your friends and family will have lots of choices for all of the events you mentioned. Q: My future mother in law has offered to pay for our photographer, which is extremely generous. However, she is insisting that we use one that she has in mind. I have had my heart set on another photographer who is more expensive than the one she has picked. How do I tell her that I want this other photographer and essentially ask her to put out even more money? - Jessica M. New York, NY Wise Bride: That really is a kind gesture on your mother in law’s part. However, this is your wedding and you should hire only the vendors that you are absolutely sure about. Communication is the key. Simply explain that you sincerely appreciate her generous offer, but you really want to use another photographer and list your reasons why. If she is agreeable, offer to pay the difference in cost. If not, go with your photographer and pay for it yourself. You will be happy every time you open your wedding album.

If you do not see a cancellation clause in the contract, inquire with the vendor about their cancellation policies and get something in writing to protect yourself. Making Your Presence Felt Definition: An unplugged wedding is one in which all guests are required to turn off all cell phones, cameras, and video recorders.
A
s the husband of a professional wedding videographer, I have heard my wife scream out in frustration on many occasions while editing her weddings. As I enter her work area, she would invariably show me the source of her pain. When the bride and groom share their first kiss as husband and wife and turn to make their way down the aisle, the crowd is cheering, the bride is smiling ear to ear, and the couple is elated as electricity fills the room. My wife’s camera is perfectly positioned to capture every beautiful detail of their celebratory walk down the aisle. It is a magical, once in a lifetime moment. And then it happens - a woman steps out of the congregation into the aisle, completely blocking the view of my wife’s, hi-definition state of the art video camera. With her video camera in hand, the woman shakily begins filming. My wife, who was carefully chosen and paid by the bride and groom due to her expertise, now has a beautiful shot of the back of the woman as the bride and groom make their way down the aisle. As the guest backs her way down the aisle in front of the bride and groom, she only stops when she bumps into my wife’s tripod and camera. “Oh, excuse me,” she says smiling directly into the camera as the bride and groom walk past, in the background. The moment is gone forever. I have seen it happen too many times to count. Frustration ensues. Are You Really There? There have also been many moments where a smiling bride on the altar will turn to make contact with her family and friends only to find them all staring at the viewfinders of their cameras, video cameras, and cell phones. They are all eager to capture the ceremony on their various devices. The assorted beeps and chirps from the devices are easily heard in the hushed atmosphere of the ceremony. The guests are all attending the ceremony, but are they really present? Unplugged weddings are growing in popularity as more and more brides seek to truly connect in a meaningful way with their family and friends, during their weddings. As the world grows more and more connected through the use of technology, we are also becoming less and less present as our attention is diverted from real world situations. A wedding ceremony is an intimate time of love, when guests should seek to be fully invested in the moment as opposed to

their viewfinders. Rather than attempting to document every detail of the event, enjoy the event. Be present, smell the air, notice the little things, live the moment in real time. Uncle Bob Wedding industry insiders even have a name for the aggressive amateur photographer getting in the way at weddings: Uncle Bob. Uncle Bob has ruined many professional wedding photos with the flash from his camera, kneeling in the aisle and blocking the view of the vows, and even standing on pews. The professional photographer is busy attempting to do the job he/she was paid to do and often runs into very awkward situations with Uncle Bob. It is not the photographer’s job to act as a referee and call out obvious intrusions on his workspace. Escaping all of this is the true beauty of an unplugged wedding.

Share Your Photos Should you decide to have an unplugged wedding, make sure that you share a few images with your guests within a couple days of the wedding — for a Saturday wedding, Monday or Tuesday is ideal. You can share them via email, your wedding website, or Facebook. Speak with your photographer beforehand to make sure that this is possible. Sharing even five wedding pictures with your guests so soon after the wedding is a way of saying thank you for abiding by your wishes. As soon as all your wedding photos are available, make prints to include with each thank you card. If possible, also make wedding photos available to guests online.

Tech Geeks By no means am I suggesting that unplugged weddings are for everyone. Admittedly, these days, asking someone to part with their cell phone or camera is like asking them to cut off a limb. If you are a bride on a budget that has chosen a smaller photography package, you may be counting on getting some pictures from your guests. It is simply an alternative to what has become the norm in the wedding industry.

Our subtropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Brittany Reynolds & Donnie Thomas III D
onnie Thomas III is the owner of the Crystal Plantation reception venue in Kenner and is about to get married. He is engaged to marry Brittany Reynolds on May 4, 2013 at St. Joseph Church on Tulane Avenue in New Orleans. Brittany is from Kenner, attended Archbishop Chappelle High School, and went on to graduate at LSU. Donnie is originally from Laplace where he attended Riverside Academy and then Southeastern Louisiana University. We recently caught up with them to discuss their upcoming nuptials.
NWG: Describe your courtship after the first date. Donnie: We made it official that we were exclusive on August 24, 2005, just days before Hurricane Katrina hit. During the storm, Brittany was in Baton Rouge at LSU and I evacuated to Kentucky. We could only communicate through texts for a while. I then moved to Baton Rouge where I found a job, and actually moved into an apartment around the corner from Brittany’s apartment. That’s when the relationship really blossomed. Then, I moved to Hammond to go to SLU for the next 5 years. We would travel back and forth on the weekends and holidays to see each other. NWG: How did he propose? Brittany: He asked my parents first. He took them out to dinner and surprised them. They gave him their blessing. He then told me that he had a Friday night off (which is extremely rare since he works weddings on the weekend) and that he was taking me to dinner at my favorite restaurant. He told me to get dressed while he was going to a dealership to look for a new car and that he would pick me up after. Donnie had my brother text him when I was upstairs
NWG: How did you meet? Donnie: It was July 16, 2005 and I was the DJ at the Crystal Plantation at the time. Brittany’s friend worked with me as a server and had Brittany pick her up from work. We started talking and decided that we would meet up later that night to hang out as a group with the rest of our friends. We were actually trying to get Brittany’s friend and my friend together, but WE ended up talking to each other all night. NWG: Describe your first date. Brittany: It was Donnie’s birthday and we went to a steak restaurant. It really wasn’t romantic or anything, but it was fun. We had become friends since the first night that we met. It was kind of a last minute date, just to see where it would go, if anywhere. There definitely was a spark there.

Donnie: We decided to have our reception at Chateau Country Club instead of the Crystal Plantation because I wanted all of my employees (and friends) to have a good time and not have to work that night. They have supported me for a long time and I wanted it to be special for them too. NWG: Any advice for future couples? Donnie: Give yourself enough time to plan everything. Being the owner of a venue, I see so many last minute weddings thrown together. Pay attention to details and get what you want.
getting dressed. He then called me and told me to look out of my bedroom window, which looked out over the front lawn. He had spelled out “Marry Me?” in Christmas lights on the lawn, and was standing next to it, all suited up and holding a dozen roses. I asked him on the phone, “Is this a joke?” and he told me to come downstairs because he had to ask me something. I was so surprised and I started crying and ran down the stairs in my robe with my hair wet. He was down on one knee with the ring in his hand. I hugged him and kissed him and must have said yes a thousand times.
NWG: How has the planning gone so far? Brittany: It’s been fun and overwhelming. There are so many choices! Donnie helps out a lot and because he is in the wedding industry, he has so much insight on what to do. Donnie: I helped with the limos and the rehearsal dinner, and also with most of the logistics such as setting up meetings. NWG: Tell us about your vendors. Brittany: Well, I got my gown at Town & Country on St Charles Ave and my bridesmaids dresses at Bridal Boutique by Mae Me. n the wedding world, one’s fashion focus is usually on the bridal gown, bridesmaids’ dresses and the mother’s dresses. We tend to neglect the male aspect of wedding fashion as many women are simply out of the loop when it comes to menswear. We present you with a look at the current trends in men’s formal wear on the national and local levels. When it comes to tuxedos, the classic, fitted silhouette look reigns supreme. Gone are the days of the baggy trouser and oversized jacket. The “European” look, slimmer cut pant and jacket, is definitely the chic way to go. The jacket with one button is trendier, while the two buttoned jacket is the most popular.
Of course, vintage looks still make a splash: the classic ivory coat with black pants and the full dress tails. These looks should be reserved for the truly formal occasions that occur after 7p.m., and should be worn by the groom and ring bearer only. Accessories As far as accessories go, we are seeing a nod to the classic as well. Vests are matching the tux instead of matching the bridesmaids’ dresses, exuding a debonair, timeless look that is not competing with the women’s wear. The bowtie has made a fierce comeback. According to Kevin Rome of Rome’s Tuxedos, “The biggest change that we are seeing is the bowtie and cummerbund replacing the long tie and vest.” Accessories are also where you can add your personal touch. Cufflinks with your favorite sports team are extremely popular here in the New Orleans area. Colored ties are commonly matched with the tan or grey suits. Colored or patterned socks are another way to make a statement.
Grey is In The hottest thing right now in menswear is the grey tuxedo. You can do the entire tuxedo in grey or just the grey jacket over black or brown slacks. There are two main kinds of grey tux: the light grey or heather, and the dark grey or steel. With these two suave looks, you can perfectly combine fashion and elegance while being a little more daring and outside of the box. Typically, the traditional black tuxedo is to be worn to events after 5p.m., while the grey tuxedos can be worn both day and night. They also bring out the man’s best features, and aren’t as contrasting to the wearer’s skin tone as the black tuxedos. They are also elegant enough for a church wedding and comfortable enough for an outside event.
One great thing about men’s formal wear is that it is slow to change fashion wise. When a new trend comes about, it stays around for a while. When you look back at your wedding photos in a few years, your husband will look as timeless and elegant as he did when he walked down the aisle.
The tan tuxedo, or destination suit, is very popular for the spring and summer both here in New Orleans and for destination weddings that take place on the beach or outdoors. It is very versatile and has both day and evening functionality. “Men’s formalwear designer, Jean Yves has teamed up with Allure Bridals resulting in the newest collection of grey and tan tuxedos to hit the market. “What’s unique about this collection is it has a very small bead of satin on the edge of the lapel, which lends itself to a bowtie or a long tie giving it a suit look,” says Joey Hunter with John’s Tuxedos.

Living in New Orleans, a city that is full of talented musicians and singers, creates a vast and diverse pool of artists from which to choose your ceremony music. They vary from genres that include classical and contemporary, to specific artists like pianists, harpists, string quartets, vocalists, choirs and jazz ensembles.

Before deciding on music for your ceremony, you should consider several factors. The ceremony venue, your budget, and the mood you’d like to project are all critical to making a wise decision. Other aspects to keep in mind are the venue size, and your particular musical texture preferences. Likewise, it is essential to confirm that the musicians or singers are comfortable with your theme and their ability to render it. Do you want to set a fully romantic tone? Or are you partial to a fun out of the ordinary theme? Is religion going to be a central part of the ceremony? Parts of the wedding ceremony to consider for music include: the prelude, the processionals of the bride and the wedding party, the interludes, the recessional and the postlude. These parts of the ceremony are very reflective. It is important for the interlude music to compliment the mood of the ceremony. A traditional example for the bride’s procession is Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus,” also known as “Here Comes the Bride”. A classical suggestion for the wedding party’s recessional is “Canon in D” by Pachelbel. However, a couple of traditional reflective songs include, “Ave Maria” by Schubert, and “Meditation from Thais“ by Massenet. The contemporary bride may consider “From This Moment On” by Shania Twain. The playful bride may choose “When I’m Sixty-Four” by The Beatles. When attempting to select specific songs it may become a bit overwhelming. One way to ease that stress is to solicit your fiancés input. He may have a

certain track or idea that is part of his family’s tradition. Although you may feel a need to choose every song, the good news is that you don’t. Allowing your musicians or singers the freedom to choose from within your genre choice gives them the freedom to perform at their best. Communicate with them and let them know what you would like. Let them do their job. After all, they know what they perform best. Nonetheless, when choosing your musicians or singers, be sure to request a demo CD and listen to the samples on their website. It is also a good idea to schedule a consultation before making a final decision. Bea, from Studio B Music adds, “The consultation is a huge part of getting a read on the couple’s want. There is nothing that takes the place of a face to face meeting.” Also, if you are planning to have the ceremony in a church, consult the coordinator or officiate as there may be rules regarding the ceremony music. All plans are finished and it’s time to walk down the aisle. The brief moments during the processional can define your wedding and should be accompanied by the appropriate music. The music you choose will greatly affect the mood and remembrance of the ceremony.

that will help you choose a wedding photographer
Y
ears after your wedding day, you will look back on that day through the eyes of the photographer that you choose. Choose wisely and your memories can be unbelievably vivid, vibrant, detailed and leave you breathless as you re-live the day. You will feel as if your family and friends surround you as you are transported through time to experience those magical feelings all over again. Choose unwisely and you will have a sinking feeling every time you look at your wedding album. You will wish that you had made the effort, spent the extra money, or knew what questions to ask, in order to get a better photographer. Unfortunately, the advent of digital photography has brought forth a slew of bad photographers onto the wedding scene in the New Orleans area. They are charging low prices and using social media to lure brides. Hiring an experienced, hard working, professional photographer is harder than ever. The great news is that we have some great photographers here in the New Orleans area. The questions below will help you to find them. 1. Get recommendations and referrals from friends. 2. Meet in person to view the photographer’s work. If they say, “We don’t meet with clients in person, all of our work can be viewed online.” This will give you an idea of how important you are to them. Move on to

someone who is excited and eager to meet with you. 3. Ask to see a complete wedding, preferably their last one, including outtakes. All photographers will show you only their best work at first, but also ask to see the most current work they have done. 4. Ask about their experience level. How many weddings have they shot this year? May I see your last wedding? If their last wedding was 6 months prior, then you know that they aren’t working very much. There is probably a reason why. 5. If your chosen photographer or their assistant cannot be present at your wedding, do not hire them. Some greedy photographers are booking four and five weddings in one day and hiring amateurs to shoot the wedding for them. The quality will not be the same. 6. Ask how much time your photographer needs to shoot your pictures? Time is money. Right after the ceremony is not when you want to be standing around getting your picture taken. Everyone is waiting for you at the reception and valuable time is being wasted. Hire someone that can work quickly and still get great shots.

7. Help your chosen photographer by communicating your shot list to them beforehand. Let them know what is important to you. Communicate with the bridal party as well, to let them know where and when they will be taking pictures on the wedding day. Locating bridal party members at the wedding is a costly task. 8. Strongly consider having an unplugged wedding. (see page 84 for details) 9. If possible, try to get a second shooter for your wedding day. Most photographers will have an assistant that will work with them. If they don’t, they can usually hire one for a small fee. 10. Ask what the photographer will wear to your wedding, as professionalism is a dying art in the wedding industry. Their answer to your question will help you to get a sense of their understanding of wedding protocol. 11. Make sure that you have a completed and signed contract from the photographer that states everything that you would like to happen that day. Make sure that the date and times are correct.

12. Ask that you be given a copyright release on all of the photos taken on the day of your wedding. With the advent of digital photography, it is not uncommon for a photographer to take 1200 pictures on your big day. You should be given a C.D. with all of the pictures to use as you wish. Get it in writing. 13. Get it in writing! Anything that you deem important or essential, make sure that you have it in writing and signed by the photographer. 14. Ask about the amount of time that it will take to receive your photographs. Do not be overly anxious to receive your wedding album. I would rather wait a bit and have the best photos that the photographer can produce rather than rush them into an inferior product. 15. When meeting with a photographer, try to gauge their personality. Does it mesh with yours? Do you feel comfortable around them? Are they outgoing? All of these things are important in getting great pictures on your wedding day. You must realize that you will be spending your entire wedding day with this person. Make sure that you would like to be around them.

[ second line parade ] If you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line”. The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band. Photography by Louis
