Analysis of Brief

Analysis of brief: • State the brief you have picked • Highlight key words in the brief • Complete a brainstorm • Explain the meaning of key words • 1-2 pages for this section

Investigation & Research

Investigation & Research: • Research existing products and analyse them • Investigate the location of the finished project • How will be finished project blend into its desired location? • Investigate the sizes of the items that will be used to determine the dimensions of the project • It is vital to show evidence of your investigation and research. Include photos/pictures/sketches • When inserting pictures from the internet/furniture magazines etc. into your document make sure to include references • 2-3 pages for this section

Design Number 1:

Design ideas/Solutions: • 3-4 pages with one main sketch on each page and additional sketches as required • List 3-4 advantages and disadvantages of each design • Each sketch should show an improvement/development • Last page of this section should include one main rendered sketch of final design (no need to list advantages/disadvantages on this page)

Sketches/Working drawings: • Orthographic views – front elevation, plan and end elevation • Sketches/working drawings of key joining methods e.g mortise and tenon, finger joints • Cutting list • 3-4 pages for this section

Manufacturing Process:

Manufacturing Process: • Include photos of key manufacturing stages. • Support photos with necessary notes • 4-5 pages for this section Processing the mortise & tenon joint for the frame. The following tools were used: • Tenon saw • Chisels • Mortise machine

Evaluation: Ask the following questions relating to the finished project: • Does the project solve the brief? • If I was to redo the project what would I do change? • What skills have I developed? (e.g. sketching, design, marking out, time management etc.) • Would you buy the project if it was for sale in a shop?

Evaluation: Overall I am very pleased with the finished project. I really enjoyed the opportunity to develop my own design and bring that to reality. Although I found the manufacturing stage challenging I have developed a number of skills as a result. Due to the number of mortise and tenon joints used I can now successfully set and use the mortise gauge which I would have struggled with in 1st and 2nd year. I have also developed confidence using the spokeshave. If I was to redo the project again I would not change the overall design or appearance. I would add extra features such as speakers to the side pieces. However due to time constraints this was not possible. Would I buy this project if it was for sale? Yes

Finally I am very happy to have engaged in a design and manufacturing process which has resulted in a project that I will use for many years.

Tips! • Include as many sketches as possible in the design ideas/solutions section. Try to make these sketches 3D if possible • Include a weekly time scale which outlines the tasks to be completed on a weekly basis • Include a cutting list in the working drawings section • Remember this document is only a guide – the overall standard, length, level of thinking and creativity applied is student driven • Enjoy designing and making your project!
