~ Important message from your NODA President ~ Nominations OPEN for the Executive Board We Need Candidates! We Need You! New NODA President, [Your Name Here], Begins 2-Year Term January 1, 2016 Dear NODA Members,

This is an election year and NODA members must put together a slate of officer candidates in September that will be voted on by the membership. Those elected will serve for two years beginning in 2016. Members will be electing President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, along with five Directors at Large (DAL). This is my last year as President. I will continue to work very hard for NODA and its goals and interests, but it is time to give someone else an opportunity to give NODA new energy, to help NODA figure out how to stand out in the crowd of competition for each member’s time. It is absolutely necessary that there be some turnover of board members in any organization. Without turnover, there is stagnation. To build a better future, we must learn from the past, but not live in it. NODA must be progressive and figure out how to appeal to members in a way that will encourage involvement in educational events and schooling shows, as well as at the committee and board levels. No one has stepped up to run for President, so we need your help. You do not have to be a current or past board member to be eligible to run for President or any other office.    

Do you want to see and/or be a part of NODA’s successful progress into the future? Do you ever wish that NODA did “X” or more “Y”? Are you unhappy with the current focus/emphasis of the organization? Do you find that you have more complaints about NODA than praise?

If you have answered “yes” to any of the questions above, then please consider becoming more involved with NODA. NODA needs your help to become all it can be.

NODA’s Annual Open Meeting September 27, 2015 Fieldstone Farms TRC 5 to 8 pm Agenda: dinner, short business meeting, election nominations from the floor, and equine presentation Need more information about running for office? Contact me at President@nodarider.org or NODA’s Parliamentarian, Dale Lappert at Parliamentarian@nodarider.org Thank you for your attention, Dee Liebenthal, President Northern Ohio Dressage Association NODA News 2015 page 9

Tips from Jan Ebeling by Cassandra Hummert

I

recently had the last minute pleasure of riding in a clinic with Jan Ebeling at Topline Stables at Walden. Janeen has always put on great clinics, and I am grateful for her passion for bringing talented clinicians to the Northeast Ohio area! The horse I brought to my one-day session was my 11 year old Swedish gelding, Viggo, who I have only had for a few months. Although he is schooling much of the Grand Prix, we have been competing at 4th level and the Prix St. George in order to slowly bring him up to the big tour. Jan gave us some wonderful pieces of advice for our daily work sessions. Below are a few that stood out.

bending the neck. I am really strong on my right side, and have a tendency to overbend the horse to the right. Jan said not only do I need to be conscientious of too much bend, but don’t necessarily correct it by counterbending. Try to keep the horse exactly straight. For Viggo, this is especially It is very important to work the horse’s walk. From the minute you swing your leg over to the minute you hop off, schooling the important in the changes, which can get crooked (usually walk is going to help you in the because I have him bent to the right). For the half passes, point the nose at the wall, but then ride the half pass with the legs as ring. When warming up and cooling down, allow ample time much as possible and don’t readjust the neck. for the horse to walk around, The last great piece of advice was for working the piaffe. and encourage him to stretch Everyone has a different style for teaching piaffe, but Jan wanted into a very long rein, but with a to “trick” the horse into making the steps, by halting and asking brisk marching pace. He should him to square the hind legs with a light tapping leg. After this, of course, Viggo around. When you pick up the was rewarded with a pat and long rein. Joan Harris Passes Away We are sad to say that Joan Harris, former riding coach and Director of Lake Erie College’s Equestrian Center during the 1980’s, passed away on August 13th at the age of 85. She was living in Dereham, Norfolk, UK. Many local equestrians and former Lake Erie College students have fond memories of her and her influence. We are told that she was still teaching in the UK into 2014. If anyone would like to send a card, we have provided the name and address of Joan’s daughter and a link to the obituary. www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/farewell-to-the-horse -worlds-great-and-good-2015-470014 Helen Brandwood Ashdene Norwich Road Swanton Morely

Northern Ohio Dressage Association USDF “L” Program – Survey Hello! Northern Ohio Dressage Association is doing research on the potential interest and feasibility of offering the USDF “L” Program in NE Ohio. Noda’s last “L” program was held in late 2002/2003 and was well attended by both participants and auditors. We need your help to determine if it’s time for another. Program information as well as participant requirements can be found on the USDF Website at: http://www.usdf.org/docs/ education/judge-training/lprogram/ParticipantInformation.pdf Requirements change on April 15th 2016. It is important that you are aware of the changes if you are interested in being a participant. If there is enough interest and a venue available, NODA would like to plan on doing the program in 2017. Depending on how things work out, there is a possibility we could start in the 2 nd half of 2016. If you are interested in being a participant or an auditor, please fill out the form below and email by September 30, 2015, to: Marcia Doyle, marcia-edu@nodarider.org, Snail mail: 1051 Page Rd., Aurora, OH 44202

Open date: 9/9 Close date: 9/23 $ NODA Professional Member Grant Opportunities $ Professionals — Trainers, Instructors Need help financially for continuing education in riding, training and theory of dressage and related subjects? NODA’s Professional Grant Funding can help make this possible. 50% of event cost is reimbursable (up to $200). Symposiums, certification clinics, judging seminars and other educational seminars are all permissible (only riding clinics are not permissible). Just apply to NODA’s board in writing — Tell why you should receive a grant, what function you plan, where it is located, and the cost of the event. Also include how you currently support NODA and how you will give back the content of the program that you attended to NODA. Will you offer a lecture, clinic, or write an article for NODA News? You can receive 50% (up to $200) of the cost of the event. The only requirement — you must be a “Professional” horseperson as defined by the current USEF rule book and be a member in good standing with NODA.

MEMBER PERK! Classified ADs Classified ads are one of the many “perks” of NODA membership. As a member you can run an ad (60 words or less) in our newsletter and website for FREE! An ad will run for two issues and then, if you’d like, you can run another ad! If you’d like to add a photo, it’s only $5/issue. So far this year, NODA classified ads have helped our members sell horses, tack, apparel, and trailers. Ads have also helped trainers find more students and barns to fill more stalls. You can also use ads to help you find something you’ve been searching for– such as the perfect horse to lease or a specific type of used saddle. It’s easy to place an ad – just email the wording to our classified editor Jill Voigt at
