Friends Supporters 2022

Together, friends lead by example We dedicate this edition of Thoughtful Giving to those who, during 2021, made the choice to directly support the work, mission, and programs of the Northern New York Community Foundation. It is you who stand strong with us not only for this year but for the days ahead. BECAUSE OF YOUR thoughtful giving, our region is better positioned for success. Your gifts are valuable tools that go to work to support basic human needs, educational opportunities, as well as overall quality of life, including arts, culture, and the humanities. LEADING BY EXAMPLE. The Friends listed in this issue stand together and lead by example to demonstrate the importance of community investment and the value of nurturing a culture of civic engagement and care in the broadest way possible, across the region and generations. Because of you, we can also continue and grow our Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge, Youth Philanthropy Council, and LEAD programs. Just like any investments, you expect a return on that investment. I can assure you that your decision has impact both today and tomorrow. The worth of a community foundation lies in the value its supporters assign to it. Our friends have once again demonstrated that.

LEADING WITH STRENGTH. Those listed on the following pages are friends of the highest magnitude. They recognize that a strong community RANDE RICHARDSON foundation translates to a stronger North Country. They acknowledge that, in addition to, specific charitable interests, there is tremendous value in support for the greater good, that ultimately makes all our lives, and those of our neighbors, better. It helps strengthen our nonprofit partners and communities throughout Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties, and positions them to succeed. LEADING WITH COMMITMENT. Friends are one of life’s greatest possessions. I join the board of directors and the Community Foundation team in expressing our deep appreciation for the privilege and trust. Always know that this organization cherishes that sacred bond and affirms that your commitment is valued and never taken for granted. We owe the leaders listed on the following pages our heartfelt gratitude. Know that each story of community betterment is also yours. Your imprint is on the people and places of Northern New York. We look forward to sharing those stories, and our continued thanks in the months ahead.

Thomas W. Burnard

A

lifelong Watertown resident, Thomas W. Burnard was a man of devout faith who was committed to many local causes and organizations that enriched the quality of life in the North Country, especially in the areas of music, theater, and the arts. Born in Watertown in 1941, he graduated from Watertown High School in 1961 and later earned a graphic arts degree from Onondaga Community College. He was a gifted artist and loved to paint and sketch. For many years, he served as the sexton at Trinity Episcopal Church, Watertown, a position from which he retired. Tom was a passionate supporter of the arts and was involved with several local theater groups, where he sang and acted in many productions and designed and built sets. He loved all types of music and, in addition to singing, played guitar and piano. Tom also shared his talents with the Miss New York State Pageant for many years. We join Tom’s son, James, and daughter, Laurel, in expressing our deepest sympathy as we celebrate his life and memory. His family has decided the most fitting way to honor Tom is through the establishment of the Thomas W. Burnard Legacy Fund at the Community Foundation. Tribute gifts in memory of Thomas W. Burnard

John Stewart ‘Jack’ Ducat

J

ohn Stewart “Jack” Ducat cherished his family and valued country and community. Born in 1928, in Worcester, Mass., Jack graduated as a three-sport athlete from Major Beal High School in Shrewsbury, Mass. Following service in the U.S. Army during World War II, he graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, where he earned a degree in metallurgy. He enjoyed a successful career as an engineer for more than 45 years with Kennametal, retiring in 2001. Jack consistently gave back to his community and was active in Massachusetts politics in the 1970s, and later New York. Jack married Elinor Walton O’Hara in 1976. Jack and Elinor moved to the North Country in 1980 and made a life on the St. Lawrence River in Alexandria Bay. He quickly grew to love the Thousand Islands region and especially enjoyed boating. Elinor passed away in 2019. After Elinor’s passing, Jack estabTribute gifts in memory of lished the Elinor Walton Ducat Fund at the Community Foundation to honor and perpetuate her legacy. With John Stewart ‘Jack’ Ducat his wife, Jack was a steadfast supporter of the Community Foundation and its mission that seeks to strengthen the quality for life in the region. He especially valued and appreciated the Foundation’s commitment to St. Lawrence Kenneth J. Eysaman III River communities. We join Jack’s sons, John, Henry Thomas, and James, and daughters Elizabeth and Kathleen Jill H. Johnson Rande Richardson in remembering a legacy of service and a life well lived.

Irene Bowen

I

rene Bowen dedicated her life to education, nurturing a love of reading in the hundreds of children she served through a remarkable career as a children’s librarian at four different public libraries and two school systems. Born in 1925, in Lowville, she graduated from Lowville Free Academy in 1943, and Smith College 1947. She later earned a graduate degree in library science from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Irene’s work with children brought her great joy and she was proud to inspire so many young readers. She later served as a reading instructor for JeffersonLewis BOCES, primarily at Beaver River Central. Irene published four books of fiction for children and aided in the preparation of “History of Lewis County, New York, from 1880 through 1965,” which her father, Tribute gifts in memory of G. Byron Bowen, edited. She shared her gifts of time and talent as a volunteer and board Irene Bowen member for several Lewis County civic and charitable organizations. We are grateful for Rande Richardson the legacy the Community Foundation will steward on Irene’s behalf to support causes that mattered most to her.

Anne O. Valentine

A

nne O. Valentine’s interest in learning as a young woman fueled her passion to return to the classroom for many years as an elementary schoolteacher. She profoundly influenced hundreds of students she taught during a decades-long career in Ticonderoga, Gouverneur, Carthage, Sackets Harbor, and Lyme. Coach Steven W. Fisher

C

oach Steven W. “Steve” Fisher dedicated his life to family, football, and community. For 45 years, he coached the General Brown Lions, retiring from the field in 2014, four years after he capped more than four decades as a physical education teacher. Steve was a staple of the North Country sports community, a staunch advocate for youth sports, and a community-driven mentor to many. He always sought ways to develop talent and bring out the best character in his students and players. Steve was one of the winningest coaches in New York, and in 2018 was inducted into the North Country Sports Hall of Fame. As a tribute to his success and dedication to the program, the General Brown Football Field was named in his honor. Early in his career he coached wrestling and lacrosse and for many years worked as a lacrosse official. In 2002, Steve’s success as a teacher earned him honors as the Central North Zone Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and in 2003, the New York State Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year. Born in 1946 in Brooklyn, a son to Herbert and Esther (Ganz) Fisher, Steve graduated from Northport High School in Long Island. He went on to SUNY Brockport where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education and health. In 1968, he married Alice Reiss, and together they raised three daughters. For more than 10 years, Steve played football for Watertown’s Red and Black. In 2008, he was inducted into the National Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame and was a member of the Red and Black Football Hall of Fame. Steve was devoted to his Jewish faith and was a longtime member of the Degel Israel Synagogue. To honor his life and memory, Steve’s family has established the Coach Steve Fisher Legacy Fund at the Community Foundation. We are humbled by the trust that Steve’s wife and daughters Lisa, Jennifer, and Sarah have placed with the Foundation to ensure Steve’s legacy will forever endure. hanks to thoughtful friends like you, the Community Foundation has been able to continue a program to engage our region’s middle school students in philanthropy. The Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge asks seventh- and eighth-grade students in Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis counties to explore their communities as they compete, through an essay contest, for an opportunity to award a local nonprofit organization one of 20 grants of $500, for a total of $10,000.

“A community is a group of people who turn to each other in times of need, providing support for those in distress while distributing love. My community of Lowville is full of great citizens who want to help others. — Lillian Exford, Lowville Academy and Central School

This is the fifth year of the program, which is made possible by all who support the Community Foundation’s Friends of the Foundation Annual Community Betterment Fund and a leadership gift from an anonymous donor, and corporate support from Community Bank, N.A. The initiative aims to have students explore their view of “community” and select a local charitable organization for a grant award that reflects what makes their community a great place to live. In the past five years, 103 students have been selected from 590 entries to present 99 grants totaling $50,000 to 82 different nonprofit organizations that serve tri-county residents. The Giving Challenge is one of the most important initiatives donors make possible. Program support builds our community’s future and helps ensure we continue to nurture and grow awareness, interest and appreciation for the value and fulfillment of civic engagement and responsibility.
