Vice Chancellor’s Message Long before lecture halls were filled, programs were accredited, or degrees were awarded, there was a vision: to build Uganda from the ground up through excellence in healthcare education and practice.

But vision alone is never enough. Dr. Ian and Robbie mobilized resources, attracted exceptional people, and inspired others to build alongside them. Today, more than 5,000 graduates serve communities across Uganda and beyond because they dared to begin.

Every CIU graduate carries a piece of that original vision. For planting the seed, staying the course, and building something that will outlive us all, the University proudly presented the Founders’ Vision Award to Dr. Ian Clarke and Robbie Clarke.

ear CIU Community, On March 27, as we celebrated the achievement of our University Charter, the University leadership also paused to recognize the individuals whose dedication, wisdom, and service made this milestone possible.

Our Charter was never the achievement of a single person or team. It reflects the collective effort of many people who believed in the University’s vision and helped turn it into reality.

Vision

Founders’ Vision Award: Dr. Ian Clarke and Robbie Clarke The University honored two individuals whose vision gave birth to the institution we proudly celebrate today. Dr. Ian Clarke and Robbie Clarke believed that education could transform lives, strengthen health systems, and uplift communities across Uganda and beyond.

Great institutions require more than vision; they require strategy. Professor Moses Galukande understood not only what Clarke International University could become, but how to get there. As one of the first people with whom Dr. Ian Clarke shared his aspirations, Professor Galukande believed in the vision from the beginning. Throughout the Charter journey, he repeatedly provided calm during moments of pressure, clarity amid complexity, and sound judgment when difficult decisions had to be made. Today, as Chancellor, he remains an anchor of the University’s mission and purpose. In recognition of his strategic leadership, wisdom, and steadfast partnership, the University presented the Pioneer Leadership Award to Professor Moses Galukande.

That moment demands leadership that can build systems, shape culture, and establish credibility. Professor Dr. Deirdre Carabine answered that call. As the University’s first Vice Chancellor,

she gave direction and structure to a young institution, laying the academic and institutional foundations that continue to support CIU today. Many of the systems, standards, and practices we rely upon bear her influence.

Dr. Ian Clarke is known for bold ideas, but bold ideas require capable people to bring them to life. Professor Carabine accepted the demanding task of leading a young university through its formative years and positioning it for sustained growth.

The University recognized Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor Rose Clarke Nanyonga, for her exceptional leadership in guiding CIU to one of its defining achievements, attaining the University Charter.

Management noted her relentless commitment to meeting every Charter requirement with discipline and purpose. Where gaps existed, she insisted on learning. Where uncertainty arose, she made thoughtful decisions. She built a coalition of champions who carried the vision forward and strengthened the systems

Stewardship & Service Award: Ms. Evelyn Grace Ayot The Registrar’s office is often one of the least visible yet most essential offices in any university. While others build vision, the Registrar builds order, credibility, and continuity.

As CIU’s first Registrar, Ms. Evelyn Grace Ayot has dedicated more than eighteen years of service to the University. Through every stage of growth and every challenge, she has remained a constant, protecting standards, preserving institutional memory, and providing steady leadership when it mattered most. Throughout the Charter process, she was one of CIU’s strongest advocates, unwavering in her belief that the University would achieve its rightful place. To generations of students, she has been far more than an administrator.

She has been a mentor, a mother figure, and a trusted guide. As Patron of the Alumni Association, she continues to strengthen relationships long after graduation. For her loyalty, resilience, and exceptional service, the University proudly presented Ms. Evelyn Grace Ayot with the Stewardship & Service Award.

Community

Stewardship & Service Award: Mrs. Elizabeth Merab Wafula Mrs. Elizabeth Merab Wafula’s contribution cannot be measured simply by years of service, but by the character, warmth, and unwavering commitment she has demonstrated throughout her time at CIU. Known affectionately as “Mama,” she has remained a dependable presence through every stage of the University’s development. She has preserved our institutional memory, upheld our values, and touched countless lives with compassion and generosity. Students, alumni, faculty, and staff describe her as a mother, mentor, educator, motivator, people person, and source of inspiration. Those words reflect the remarkable impact she has had on generations of the CIU community. In recognition of her exceptional loyalty, integrity, and service, the University proudly presented the Stewardship & Service Award to Mrs. Elizabeth Merab Wafula.

Celebrating Ms. Florence Githinji’s New Leadership Role

e are immensely proud to feature our Quality Assurance Manager, Ms. Florence Githinji, in this magazine following her distinguished appointment as the Vice President of the Ugandan Universities Quality Assurance Forum (UUQAF). Florence has been a pivotal force at Clarke International University, consistently championing the high standards and academic integrity that define our institution. Her transition into this national leadership role is a testament to her deep expertise and unwavering commitment to “striving for excellence in higher education,” reflecting the very values we nurture here at CIU. In her new capacity, Florence will collaborate with stakeholders across the country to strengthen institutional frameworks and inspire progress within the sector. While she continues to lead our internal quality initiatives, her role at UUQAF ensures that CIU remains at the forefront of national educational benchmarks. A Chartered Legacy, A New Cabinet: CIU Welcomes new Guild Council O n 11 June 2026, CIU gathered in a spirit of celebration, gratitude, and expectation as the historic Fourteenth Guild and First Chartered Guild Council formally handed over leadership to a new administration.

The ceremony was a colourful and well attended occasion, bringing together students, university leaders, guests, and representatives of the many nationalities that make up the CIU community.

There was much to celebrate, for the departing Council had served during a truly significant chapter in the University’s history. It was under their tenure that Clarke International University attained Charter status, a milestone that gave special meaning to the occasion and earned the former Guild President, His Excellency Okello Robert, the affectionate title of the Chartered President.

As the audience reflected on the work of the outgoing Council, several achievements were remembered with appreciation. Under President Okello Robert’s leadership, the Guild strengthened unity among students across all faculties, improved relations between students and staff, and secured support from KCB, Centenary Bank, Safe Boda, and Faras. His executive team, including Vice President Her Excellency Nalwada Sumaya and Prime Minister Right Honourable Wesley K. Michael, helped establish a culture of service, initiative, and responsible representation.

The former cabinet also left practical improvements that touched student life. Honourable Kevin Anena, Minister for Gender and Social Welfare, advocated for the increase of food coupons from eighteen to twenty five, introduced smart Guild uniforms, and #MakingADifference

supported students through emergency sanitary towel donations. Honourable Katumba Rodney Patrick enhanced financial transparency through a receipt authenticating printer, while Honourable Julion Mugoowa expanded student organisations by supporting the growth of groups such as the Red Cross and the Developers Club.

The ceremony also recalled the cultural and institutional advances made during the term. Clarke International University hosted the South Sudanese Inter Universities Cultural Gala through the efforts of Honourable Christopher Mabor, Minister for External Affairs. Honourable Martha Muwanguzi helped advance student sports leadership and the launch of the Private Universities Students Association Uganda. Parliament passed important policies on mental health and examination malpractice, while the judiciary, under Chief Justice Mr Afema Denis, introduced a confidential Student Feedback App to protect student privacy.

Amid the music, colour, and warm expressions of appreciation, the outgoing leaders presented the responsibility of service to the new Guild Council.

Khamis Alhaj from South Sudan was welcomed as the new Guild President, with Dalia Aforki assuming office as the new Guild Vice President. Their leadership reflects the diversity and international character of CIU, where students from many countries are represented within one student body.

The incoming Guild Council enters office with ambitious plans for the welfare, representation, unity, and development of students. The handover was therefore not simply a farewell to a successful administration, but a graceful passing of responsibility from one generation of leaders to the next. With the foundations laid by the Chartered Guild Council and the promise carried by the new leadership, Clarke International University looks ahead to another chapter of progress, inclusion, and service.

Inspiring Leadership: Hon. Hajjati Minsa Kabanda Motivates Nursing 360 Graduands at CIU

n June 10, 2026, CIU had the distinct privilege of hosting Hon. Hajjati Minsa Kabanda, Member of Parliament and Minister for Kampala Capital City, as the chief guest for the historic Nursing 360 Training (Cohort 1) Graduation Ceremony. Organized in partnership with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council, the event celebrated the dedication, resilience, and growth of the very first cohort of this intensive 12-week program.

Drawing from her own remarkable journey as a registered nurse who once ran a small socialenterprise clinic in Kisenyi, Hajjati Kabanda shared an inspiring story of service and leadership that left the graduands deeply motivated. Her trajectory from frontline healthcare provider to a prominent national political leader served as a powerful reminder of the limitless potential within the nursing profession. She challenged the graduates to embrace excellence, rise above obstacles, and step out into the world as the compassionate leaders and change-makers of tomorrow.

As a fully chartered institution, Clarke International University continues to solidify its legacy of student empowerment, community transformation, and resilient leadership. By equipping healthcare professionals with cutting-edge clinical frameworks and advanced technical expertise, CIU remains dedicated to bridging critical gaps and shaping the future of public health and innovation across Uganda.

CIU also offered 100% 50% sobat scholarships to the minister during her swearing as the MP for kampala central.

CIU and Partners Chart a New Course for Healthcare Excellence at the 2nd National Soft Skills Conference

A

s Clarke International University (CIU), we are proud to stand as a lead partner in the wake of the successful 2nd National Soft Skills & Self-Care Conference 2026.

This landmark event, hosted by the Little Winnie Foundation at the Pope Paul Memorial Hotel, brought together hundreds of professionals under the vital theme, “Soft Skills & Self-care at the Heart of Quality Care.” With the endorsement of the Ministry of Health, represented by Dr. Joseph Okware, the conference cemented the reality that technical medical expertise must be balanced with human-centered competencies like empathy, resilience, and effective communication to truly transform Uganda’s healthcare system.

The two-day deliberations delved into critical subthemes that CIU is deeply committed to, including nurturing caregiver resilience, mastering clinical communication, and fostering emotional intelligence in patient care.

Through plenary sessions and panel discussions, we joined forces with esteemed partners like the Uganda Heart Institute, WHO Uganda, and Makerere University to address the systemic gaps that lead to compassion fatigue. This collaboration emphasizes our shared belief that a health worker’s wellbeing is the foundation upon which quality patient outcomes are built, moving the conversation from theoretical advocacy to practical, systemic integration.

The conference culminated in the Ndeeba Declaration, a bold roadmap featuring six concrete commitments to ensure accountability beyond the event. Among these is the activation of the LWF Fund to subsidize training for frontline workers, the rollout of accredited regional roadshows starting in July 2026, and the development of a practical Soft Skills Toolkit. Furthermore, the establishment of the Soft Skills Leadership Awards and a dedicated Policy Advocacy Working Group ensures that compassionate care is not only recognized but also protected through continuous dialogue with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council and other regulatory bodies.

Looking forward, CIU remains at the forefront of this movement as we prepare for the 3rd National Soft Skills Conference, scheduled for 22nd–23rd April 2027. The upcoming theme, “From Policy to Practice: Soft Skills as Standard Care,” will challenge us to review the progress of our current pledges and deepen our impact across all districts. We invite all stakeholders and healthcare professionals to join us in this journey, as we work tirelessly to ensure that empathy and self-care become the non-negotiable standards of healthcare excellence in Uganda.

When Care Meets Commerce: CIU’s Entrepreneurship Exhibition

T

he CIU campus transformed into avibrant market place of innovation for a joint Entrepreneurship Exhibition on 22nd May this year. In a brilliant display of cross-disciplinary collaboration, students from the School of Business & Technology and the School of Nursing & Midwifery came together to showcase and sell original products they developed entirely from scratch. The groundbreaking event proved that when healthcare insight merges with strategic business acumen, the results are both highly marketable and deeply impactful for the community.

The exhibition served as the grand finale of a rigorous entrepreneurship course designed to push students well past theoretical classroom learning.

Rather than just writing traditional business plans, these future professionals were tasked with building real, tangible ventures from the ground up. By pairing the empathetic, problem-solving mindset of nursing and midwifery with the techsavvy execution of business and technology, the students successfully broke down academic silos to address real-world consumer needs.

The energy on campus was electric as faculty, peers, and external visitors moved through a buzzing marketplace filled with student-led stalls. Step-up student CEOs handled everything from live product demonstrations to inventory management and real-time cash flow tracking as they actively marketed their creations. The diverse array of items for sale included organic skincare and wellness kits crafted with clinical expertise, practical lifestyle goods engineered for sustainability, and innovative digital platforms designed to streamline service delivery.

This successful exhibition represents a vital shift in how higher education approaches career readiness by proving that the future of industry innovation is inherently collaborative. By encouraging nursing students to think like entrepreneurs and business students to deeply understand healthcare and community wellness, the university is actively shaping versatile graduates ready to lead and transform their respective fields. Congratulations to all the student entrepreneurs who put their hard work and creative brilliance on display and proved they are ready to make a tangible difference in the market.

A Night of Cinematic Magic: CIU Hosts yet Another Silent Movie Night

T

he Rock Arena was transformed into a unique sanctuary of cinema and sound on Friday, March 6th, for an innovative Silent Movie Night & Disco organized by the CIU Guild Office.

Breaking away from the traditional loud cinema setup, the Guild Office introduced a personalized, high-fidelity experience where every attendee utilized wireless headsets to enjoy the film. This creative initiative allowed the student body to “Lead, Innovate, and Transform” their Friday night, blending the nostalgia of a big-screen movie with modern, immersive technology. As the film played, the arena was filled with the rhythmic crunch of free popcorn and a captive audience lost in their own private sonic worlds.

Once the credits rolled, the Guild Office kept the energy high by transitioning seamlessly into a Silent Disco, where students and guests toggled between multiple music channels to keep the party going until midnight.

The event was a massive success, showcasing the Guild’s commitment to fostering a vibrant campus culture and proving once again that #CIULife is at the forefront of unique student experiences.

n the evening of April 11th, the atmosphere at Clarke International University (CIU) underwent a seismic shift as the CIU Rock Arena was transformed into a high-octane hub of music and urban culture for the Club Canvas event. Organized by the renowned Swangz Events, the night was a masterclass in production, featuring towering light rigs and a bassheavy sound system that quite literally made the floor shake. The “Club Canvas” concept merged the raw energy of a club with creative, live art installations, creating a vibrant playground that resonated perfectly with the campus community and set a new standard for university social events.

The energy remained unmatched throughout the night as a curated lineup of performers and DJs bridged the gap between local campus talent and mainstream appeal. Beyond the entertainment, the Rock Arena served as a unique networking hub where students

from different universities could connect and celebrate together. The seamless execution by Swangz Events ensured that despite the massive turnout, the focus remained on the immersive experience, with interactive segments allowing attendees to become part of the creative process rather than just spectators.

As the final tracks played, the consensus was unanimous: the event was a landmark moment for CIU’s campus culture. Hosting such a high-caliber production demonstrates the university’s commitment to a holistic student experience, balancing academic rigor with worldclass engagement. For those in attendance, the memory of the electric atmosphere and the shaking floor of the Rock Arena will linger long after the stage is gone, marking April 11th as a definitive night in the university’s history books.

A Spectacular Display of Spirit at the 2026 Chancellors Cup

C

larke International University recently vibrated with athletic prowess and school spirit during the annual Chancellor’s Cup, held on April 16th and 17th. The tournament brought together four formidable teams Lead, Innovate, Transform, and MakeaDifference each embodying the core values of our institution. The atmosphere was electric as students and staff cheered on their respective sides, but ultimately, the yellow jersey reigned supreme.

We extend a massive congratulations to Team Lead, our official Chancellor’s Cup Champions, whose coordination and determination on the field were truly unmatched.

While Team Lead took home the trophy, the competition remained fierce until the final whistle. A huge shoutout goes to Team Transform for securing a hard-fought second-place finish, showcasing incredible resilience and skill.

We also recognize Team Innovate and Team MakeaDifference for their spirited participation and the high level of sportsmanship displayed throughout the two-day event. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the incredible energy of the tournament; events like these continue to strengthen the bond of the CIU community and remind us of the power of teamwork and healthy competition.

Community day 2026: Service, Synergy & Celebration at CIU

IU once again proved that its heart beats for the community through a two-day “Community Day” activation. The initiative kicked off on Friday, March 6th, with “dirty hands and clean hearts” as the CIU Guild Cabinet and Rotaract Club descended upon Katongole Market for a massive pre-event cleanup. Beyond sweeping stalls and clearing waste, our student leaders spent the day sensitizing local traders about the importance of environmental hygiene and mobilizing them for the free medical services to follow.

This grassroots effort set the stage for a Saturday defined by the CIU spirit of #MakingADifference. The main event on Saturday, March 7th, transformed the campus into a bustling hub of health, hope, and high energy. While the music played, lives were being touched through a comprehensive medical camp hosted in partnership with industry giants. Major medical partners including C-Care (IHK), UNCDA, Kisugu Health Center, the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), and the UPDF provided critical services

ranging from HIV and Hepatitis B screenings to Breast and Prostate cancer exams. The impact was bolstered by corporate partners like Paxtel and DTB, alongside others like Standard Chartered, Absa, and Sanlam, who provided financial literacy and insurance services, ensuring a holistic approach to community empowerment. The day was far from just a clinical exercise; it was a vibrant celebration of the diverse cultures that make CIU a continental melting pot.

The Cultural Competition saw spirited performances from the Baganda, Southern Sudan, Eritrea, and India, with the Northern Uganda community ultimately taking home the trophy for their exceptional showcase.

Between the rock climbing, bouncing castles for the children, and dental check-ups by Tells Dental Services, the event seamlessly blended professional service with family fun. At its core, Community Day 2026 was a powerful reminder that at CIU, we don’t just educate; we Lead, Innovate, and Transform the society we call home.

From Classrooms to Change - Makers: Honoring the Legends and Leaders of CIU’S Class of 2026 T he 16th Graduation Ceremony of Clarke International University (CIU) was a historic and celebratory event, marking a monumental turning point as the university hosted its first graduation since receiving its official Charter. Under the inspiring theme of “Lead, Innovate, Transform,” the Class of 2026 affectionately known as the “Charter Class” was honored for their resilience and academic excellence.

The atmosphere was one of profound thanksgiving, with Chancellor Prof. Moses Galukande describing the day as a season of harvest. He emphasized that the granting of the Charter is the university’s greatest milestone to date, serving as a state-sanctioned “stamp of excellence” that confirms CIU as a self-governing, world-class institution whose degrees now carry global prestige and credibility.

In a stirring address that challenged the graduates to look beyond their certificates, Vice Chancellor Prof.

Rose Clarke Nanyonga reminded the congregation that while a degree is evidence of learning, being a changemaker is evidence of applying that knowledge. She urged the new alumni not to wait for opportunities to come to them, but to have the courage to build new doors for others to walk through.

This call to action was further reinforced by the university’s commitment to industry relevance,

highlighted by the historic appointment of its first Professor of Practice, Dr. Charles Olaro, and a strategic global partnership with SEAMK Finland. These initiatives ensure that CIU graduates are not just academically proficient, but are “Industry-Ready” leaders prepared to navigate the complexities of the 21st-century global economy.

The ceremony was also a touching tribute to the pillars who have built the institution’s legacy. A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Mama Wafula, the university’s longest-serving staff member, who received a standing ovation for her decades of selfless service and motherly care. Recognition was also given to founders Ian and Robbie Clarke for their visionary spark, and Prof. Deirdre Carabine for her pivotal role in the Charter process.

A Night of triumph: CIU Celebrates the official Charter in grand style A

fter the colorful and emotional 16th Graduation Ceremony earlier in the day, the atmosphere at Clarke International University shifted from academic solemnity to pure celebration. As the sun set, the CIU community gathered for an unforgettable evening to commemorate our most significant milestone yet: the attainment of the Official University Charter. The event brought together the full spectrum of the CIU family, including the University Management, students, and alumni. We were especially honored to have the Clarke Group CEO, Mr. Sean Clarke, and his wife join the festivities, adding to the sense of shared achievement that defined the night. It was a moment to exhale and reflect on the years of hard work, late nights, and rigorous standards that led to this historic recognition.

The evening was a true “thank you” to everyone who played a part in this journey. Amidst a spread of plenty with great food, drinks, and a lively atmosphere the university took the time to formally recognize the “Charter Heroes.”

Special awards were presented to the dedicated staff and partners who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to navigate the Charter process. Their commitment has ensured that CIU now stands as a self-governing, world-class institution, providing a future-proof education for all who walk through our gates. As the music played and stories were shared between alumni and current students, the sense of “Lead, Innovate, Transform” was palpable.

T Leading the Change: Reflections on the “Becoming Her” Impact Session at CIU Vivian Kayaga Business Development Office

he atmosphere at the Clarke International University (CIU) Main Hall was electric on April 22nd, 2026, as we hosted the “Becoming Her: Women of Impact” edition. In a powerful collaboration with the CIU Manifest Association, the event served as a beacon of empowerment, bringing together students and professionals to explore the multifaceted journey of womanhood and leadership. The session was rooted in our core values to Lead, Innovate, and Transform providing a platform where wisdom was passed from seasoned trailblazers to the next generation of African leaders. ` The facilitators delivered a masterclass in intentional living, beginning with Dr. Lydia Esther Buzaalirwa, who emphasized that true growth is a disciplined process rather than a destination. She urged the audience to be protective of their influences and to shun the temptation of shortcuts, a sentiment echoed by Dr. Murungi Charlotte, who focused on the holistic development of the self.

Dr. Charlotte highlighted that resilience and mental clarity are the engines of success, reminding participants that staying teachable and accountable is the only way to remain grounded in an everchanging professional landscape.

Adding to the depth of the discussion, Evelyn G. Ayot and Miriam Matovu spoke on the pillars of character and faith. Evelyn reminded the ladies that diligence and the way we treat othersregardless of their status are the ultimate determinants of our destiny. This was beautifully complemented by Miriam’s practical wisdom on maintaining a resilient mindset and trusting in divine guidance. As the event concluded, it was clear that “Becoming Her” is not just about professional titles, but about building a legacy of integrity, hard work, and unwavering hope. This collaboration focuses on a “Demographic Exchange,” designed to leverage Finland’s advanced strategies in automation and workforce sustainability to empower Uganda’s vibrant, youth-driven economy. By examining how Finland manages its ageing population and labour shortages, CIU aims to adapt these high-tech solutions to optimise local resources and transform our youthful population into a primary economic asset.

The partnership places a heavy emphasis on integrating work-based learning with academic excellence, particularly within CIU’s core strengths of Nursing, Public Health, and Business. With SEAMK’s expertise in applied research and entrepreneurial studies, including specialised fields like AgroFarm Engineering, CIU is set to enhance its curriculum to better address business succession and the scalability of small family enterprises. This alignment ensures that CIU students are not only academically proficient but

are also prepared to navigate the complexities of global leadership and ethical business practices. CIU and ACN Forge Historic Alliance to Combat Uganda’s Counterfeit Crisis

C

IU has officially signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Anti-Counterfeit Network (ACN), establishing a strategic consortium to tackle the “existential threat” of counterfeit goods. As a valuesbased institution with 16 years of excellence, CIU is the first academic body to partner with ACN, leveraging its recently chartered status and its prestigious Research and Ethics Committee (REC) to provide the academic rigor needed to fight this growing trade. The partnership aims to fill a massive data gap in Uganda, where current estimates suggest the country loses billions annually to illicit trade, yet lacks the “pre-operative evidence” required for effective government and public intervention.

The collaboration places a heavy emphasis on public health, investigating the “missing links” between substandard products and rising medical conditions such as cancer, leukemia, and reproductive health issues. Expert discussions during the signing highlighted the harrowing impact of fake anti-malarials on pediatric oncology and the presence of heavy metals in counterfeit cosmetics linked to fibroids. By utilizing CIU’s strong leverage in the healthcare spectrum and its new PhD in Public Health program, the consortium will build a localized stock of knowledge to address these health risks, transforming CIU’s campus into a hub for applied research that directly impacts the lives of Ugandan citizens.

Beyond research, the partnership offers significant institutional support and academic incentives, including a 50% scholarship for ACN staff and their sister organizations within CIU’s School of Business and Applied Technology

(SOBAT). This operational synergy ensures that the fight against counterfeits is integrated into the curriculum, with guest lectures and “Open House” events scheduled to begin in the upcoming August semester. CIU’s innovation wing, The Foundry, will also work alongside ACN to explore technologydriven solutions in agriculture and supply chain integrity, fostering an environment where students can turn their research into actionable, grant-funded projects.

The leadership of both organizations underscored that this is not just an academic exercise but a monumental community partnership, as 58% of products consumed in Uganda are estimated to be counterfeit. Leading the future: CIU and C-Care forge strategic innovation alliance I

n a sun-drenched room filled with the next generation of Uganda’s medical elite, a quiet revolution was signed into existence. It wasn’t just a contract; it was a manifesto for a “borderless” Uganda.

As Clarke International University and C-Care Uganda joined hands to launch the Health Innovation Nexus a powerhouse collaboration between The Foundry (CIU) and C-Care Uganda marks the end of “secondrate” medical standards. By merging the intellectual fire of Clarke International University students with the clinical muscle of C-Care’s 30-year legacy, the air was thick with the realisation that the traditional ways of teaching and treating are no longer enough. The launch of The Foundry a high-octane innovation hub marked the end of the era where African healthcare waited for the West to lead.

Dr.Milka Singh The Deputy Vice Chancellor Clarke International University set the tone with a stark warning about the speed of the modern world. He invoked Moore’s Law, the principle that computing power doubles every 18 months, to remind the audience that if technology is moving that fast, our human ideation must quadruple just to keep pace. For Dr Singh, the classroom can no longer be a place of repetition. He spoke of a “triple pyramid” of learning that moves from basic understanding to deep knowledge, and finally to the rare air of wisdom.

He illustrated his point with a fascinating story of a simple water bottle lid—a minor engineering tweak that cost millions but saved a company sixty million dollars by defeating counterfeiters.

It was a masterclass in the idea that small, disruptive changes in “process and product” are what will ultimately save lives in the health care sector. The energy shifted as the CEO of C-Care Uganda , Azhar Sundhoo , took the floor. For him, the partnership is a vehicle to take Ugandan excellence across the borders of East Africa. His vision is one of radical simplification and decentralisation. By leveraging

Artificial Intelligence and the raw data from C-Care’s vast clinical network, he aims to move healthcare away from the crowded city centres and into the “last mile” of rural communities.

The goal is a world where technology makes the most advanced clinical outcomes accessible to a farmer in a remote village just as easily as a patient in a high-end Kampala ward. Dr Ian Clarke , the pioneer whose name is synonymous with the university, brought the room back to the “mental grit” required to sustain such a vision. In a moment of raw honesty, he confessed to being “mediocre” in his university classes, but argued that success in a resource-poor country isn’t about being the smartest it’s about having the “risk” to push forward when others sit back.

He recalled the early days of scrubbing floors to maintain standards, a testament to his belief that “resource-poor” should never mean “second-rate.” Hechallenged the young leaders in the room to reject the typical “it will do” attitude, reminding them that the AI tools available in Kampala today are the same as those in London or New York. The only barrier left, he insisted, is the mental one. Finally, Dr David Jolly Muganzi , the director of The Foundry, gave a face to this new era. A medical doctor who spent seven years self-studying AI and public health, he is proof that the modern practitioner must be a polymath.

He shared the story of winning global awards in Washington D.C. while studying at a small local university to prove a singular point: world-class talent is not dictated by geography. Under his leadership, The Foundry isn’t just looking for software or gadgets; it is hunting for “virgin thinking.” It is a place where students are treated as a “think tank,” tasked with solving the most complex clinical puzzles.

Clarke Farm and CIU: Opportunities to advance coffee training in Uganda.

C

larke Farm is part of Clarke Group which also owns Clarke International University (CIU). Clarke Farm is a 2,200-acre farm in Kyenjojo District, Western Region, with the main crop being coffee.

Other crops include trees – Eucalyptus and pine, indigenous trees planted for shade, fruit trees such as mangos, macadamia, vanilla, maize, Irish potatoes and beans. There are also laying hens and goats. The farm is regenerative using products from one section of the farm to sustain production in other sectors. The maize flour, milled on the farm from the maize, feeds farm workers (sometimes up to 800 people), while the maize bran feeds the chickens. Stalks from the beans and maize are used for mulching the coffee and the chicken manure is used for compost, which is used when planting coffee seedlings.

The coffee is ‘wet processed’ with the outer skin and pulp being removed; the pulp is mixed with chicken manure, maize cobs (after shelling) as part of the compost. Timber from the trees is used for building

the cottages of in the ‘Coffee Lodge’ for agrotourism, while the sawdust is sequestered in the compost.

When the chickens are off-layed, they are sold to the local community while the eggs are also sold locally adding protein to their diet. Fruit from the mango trees is used at the Coffee Lodge for juice, while Macadamia is roasted for local consumption or sold for export.

The farm carries out operational research with Arabica coffee being grafted onto Robusta rootstock to produce a hardier and more productive variety.

New varietals of coffee such as Excelsa and Liberica are also being trialled. Since the coffee seedlings are produced in the nursery and the cherry is handpicked, processed, dried and graded for export on the farm itself, the farm can control every stage of the preparation of the coffee. This allows us to experiment with various methods of processing to produce the highest quality coffee. This also provides an excellent opportunity for training and research on

all aspects of coffee production.

CIU can add to this platform by designing courses in coffee agronomy and training in the coffee value chain.

The aim is to train students in a modular fashion, from basic practical coffee agronomy to farm management, to more specialist training in line with government TVET programs progressing from the level of Certificate to Diploma and higher-level qualifications. The combination of practical training on the farm, plus the opportunity for operational research lays a foundation for more theoretical and specialised training. The goal is for Clarke Farm in combination with CIU to become a centre of excellence for training at all levels of the coffee value chain.

It is also hoped that we can partner with institutions abroad to provide opportunities for training and research in the coffee value chain and for exchange students and to investigate the production of other coffee byproducts such as cascara prepared from the coffee pulp or beverages prepared from the mucilage. Expertise in coffee roasting is lacking in sub-Saharan Africa, so Africa sells green beans while the vast majority of roasting is

carried out in the western countries where the coffee is consumed. For example, this results in Ugandan coffee being sold to Italy as green bean, roasted in Italy and sold as ‘Italian coffee’. This is a major area in the coffee value chain which needs to be addressed, and we can start by passing on the skills of the Master Roaster to young Africans.

Clarke Farm and CIU provides an ideal platform for the development of a Coffee Institute of excellence not only for Uganda but for sub-Saharan Africa.

CJS Flag Competition We have done so much to celebrate our 10th anniversary!

One of our favorite initiatives was a school-wide competition to design a Clarke Junior School flag. The contest was open to all CJS students, and we were blown away by the creativity on display.

A massive congratulations to our winners, Malaika and Inell in P4! They designed a vibrant, colorful flag that beautifully incorporates all of our school houses, with the CJS logo proudly at the center. We have officially brought their design to life, and the flag now flies high every week—a brilliant, lasting symbol to mark our milestone decade.

Clarke Senior School: Building Values, Leadership, and Sports

larke Senior School officially opened its doors in February 2026, welcoming a pioneer group of 40 students across Senior One and Senior Two. Now in our second term, we are steadily building a culture rooted in values, leadership, and sports hallmarks of the Clarke tradition.

World Environment Day On June 5, 2026, our students joined the global community in celebrating World Environment Day. With enthusiasm and teamwork, they planted flowers around the school grounds, symbolizing growth, care for the environment, and a commitment to sustainability.

Football Match June 18 marked our very first football match against Kakungulu Memorial School. Though we were defeated 4–0, the experience was invaluable. For our students, it was not just about the scoreline but about stepping onto the pitch, engaging with another school community, and igniting a passion for future matches. This debut has motivated us to train harder and embrace the spirit of sportsmanship.

Boarding Life Boarding life at Clarke Senior School is vibrant and active. Every Saturday begins with a cross-country walk,

followed by fitness exercises. Last week, students enjoyed basketball, while this weekend brought the excitement of water polo. These activities foster teamwork, resilience, and fun essential ingredients of holistic education.

Student Leadership On June 19, we held our first-ever student leadership campaigns and elections. Congratulations to our pioneer Head Girl, Sapphire Ainomugisha, and Head Boy, Marck Wendy. Their election symbolizes not just prestige but a commitment to service within the school community.
