Award-winning facilities & technologies

Graduate approval

NMIT employs an impressive range of experienced, industrysavvy teaching and support staff from a wide range of countries. The NMIT staff professional development programme ensures staff skills and methods in teaching and learning remain current with international best practice.

With over $43 million invested in recent years in a range of modern teaching facilities, NMIT is well placed to deliver on its promise of a world class education. Whether it’s our award-winning Creative Industries building, or the very latest Maritime simulation software suite, you’re learning at the cutting edge.

Our graduates are proof of our culture of achievement and excellence. Courses are constantly monitored for graduate feedback and consistently achieve targeted rates of satisfaction - the kind of feedback that tells us NMIT delivers for its students.

Studio spaces

Live action learning Learning is never confined to the classroom at NMIT. Our Adventure Tourism students are constantly outdoors in one of the three National Parks on our doorstep, developing the skills they need to be relevant in the very busy tourism job market. NMIT’s Creative Industries building is not only known around the world for its award-winning timber frame design. It’s also an inspiring hub of creative activity allowing our arts, music, design and writing students to create together in wide, open art studios, galleries, performance suite and design spaces using the latest digital equipment.

Hands-on Te Ringa raupa-

Local projects Our students get involved in local projects such as building a unit for the Nelson Women’s Centre, an enclosure for Natureland Zoo or helping service some of the NMIT fleet vehicles.

Virtual realities Welcome to the future - using the Oculus Rift, the worldleading virtual reality headset, along with Microsoft Kinect (adapted to work with computers controlling robotics and 3D scanners) our Bachelor of IT students are creating fully immersive recordings for augmented reality solutions.

6

Turning up the heat Our Chef and Cookery students feel the heat of a fully commercial kitchen setup, providing restaurant quality meals for the Rata Room restaurant’s paying customers, delivered to the tables by our Hospitality students who rapidly learn the value of great service.

Captain on deck Having invested over $1 million in our brand new, state-of-the-art maritime simulation suite and training equipment, our maritime students learn to pilot three different vessel types in real time, using the very latest software available worldwide.

At NMIT, the focus is ‘hands-on’ learning - which is why your curriculum is full of real world learning experiences and cutting edge technologies.

Live in the lab Many of our students learn in high tech working environments - like the marine hatchery laboratories at Nelson’s internationally renowned Cawthron Science Institute, where they’re improving the science of aquaculture - a vital local industry.

Caring on the cutting edge Experiencing realistic clinical scenarios is the newest way to learn, and NMIT’s $1 million nursing facilities upgrade (including the very latest in patient simulation) allows tutors to test students in real time with a comprehensive range of medical situations - that’s one very sophisticated mannequin.

Nelson Campus NMIT’s main Nelson Campus is located in Nelson’s vibrant city centre. On campus you’ll join around 4,000 other students who study annually at NMIT.
