New Mexico Healthy Soils Program

The Healthy Soil Act was passed in 2019 and prompted the New Mexico Department of Agriculture to create the Healthy Soils Program. The purpose of the program is “to promote and support farming and ranching systems and other forms of land management that increase soil organic matter, aggregate stability, microbiology and water retention to improve the health, yield, and profitability of the soils of the state.” NMDA accepts two types of grant applicants: eligible entities and individual applicants. Individual applicants have until April 26, 2024, to apply for FY25 funding. NMF&LB policy supports the NMDA’s voluntary Healthy Soils Program.

NM STATE FAIR “SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, & ENVIRONMENTAL DAY”

We went by! Great to get a project pack!

Deveri Mathews, AGvocate Roosevelt County Farm & Livestock Bureau

STAKED PLAINS ROUNDUP

NMAITC attended the “Science, Technology,& Environmental Day” at the New Mexico State Fair this year.

Tamara Fitzgerald Ludwig, a NMF&LB Foundation Board member, volunteered to share her passion for agriculture with others. “We had many visitors by our booth, such as teachers, students, volunteers, and AGvocates,” said Shae Devers. Each class received a pack of materials to do an activity called “Living Necklace”. Be sure to check out the lesson on our website at: www.nmaitc.org!

Thank you Beverly Allen, at Chevron - Permian, for sponsoring the classroom kits.

Thank you Belen FFA, SODA FFA, Valencia FFA, and Valencia County 4-H members for participating in a volunteer day to help put our kits together. Your help was “AG”ppreciated.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

150 kits handed out. Over 3,000 students!

Britney attended the Staked Plains Roundup in Hobbs, on September 7th and 8th. Over 500 4th grade students attended the two-day event sponsored by the Western Heritage Museum. The event featured 7 learning stations:

Branding

4H

Small animals

Roping

Equine science

Butter making (NMAITC)

Bull/bronc riding & bull fighting

The day wrapped up with a special Hoop Dance performance, and a great rodeo demonstration from the NMJC Rodeo Team!

“Sharing with the students the importance of agriculture, and having them experience making their own food is “dairy” rewarding.”

Britney - NMAITC Senior Program Coordinator
