I T ’ S A BOUT Y OU ! Every employee in every department has one goal - to provide each patient with first-rate, professional care.

At Mee It’s All About You Dear Susan, The Friday following Thanksgiving our family was traveling south on the 101, returning to our home in Ventura after a holiday in the Bay Area. Our 2 year old daughter is on a ventilator and receives nutrition through a g-tube. When stopped for gas in King City, we had an unfortunate accident and her g-tube came out. We always travel with extensive medical supplies, but this time overlooked the needed syringe of saline to properly replace and inflate the replacement tube we had. We were fortunate enough to find Mee Memorial was just a short way from our location, and immediately headed there. When we spoke to the staff they very quickly brought us into the ER and offered whatever assistance we needed. Dr. Stubblefield assisted my wife in the replacement of the g-tube and was extremely patient, helpful and supportive during a stressful situation. The nurses and other ER staff were equally professional and helpful.

My wife and I would like to extend our thanks to your facility, your staff and medical professionals. What could have been a very serious matter for our family was dealt with quickly and we were able to resume our trip. Please pass on our thanks and appreciation to Dr. Stubblefield, the ER staff on duty Friday afternoon, and your excellent facility in general. Regards, Family from Ventura, CA

From the President Dear Community Members and Visitors, With 2015 in the rear-view mirror, it is time to look forward to the excitement and uncertainty that changes often bring with each New Year. The Chamber has a long-standing tradition of supporting and promoting businesses of all sizes in the King City area. I began serving on the Board of Directors in 2011 and since then my understanding and true appreciation for this town have grown exponentially with each passing year. Despite a challenging economy, businesses continue to develop and flourish with the support of community members and organizations like this one. I am honored to serve as President of the Chamber and will continue to be an advocate for positive change and progression. We strive to bring community leaders together to create solutions for businesses, as well as supporting the great standard of living that our residents have come to expect. The Chamber has an array of events planned that are sure to get our community energized. We appreciate input from members and encourage you to share your comments and suggestions. Thank you to all who support the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Office of the Mayor Hi, Welcome to the City of King. Whether you’re a resident, a visitor or just passing through I hope that you take the time to enjoy all that we have to offer. We’re spoiled with great weather year-round, clean air, and plenty of recreational and social activities. Personally I think we have the best of all worlds. There are great things to do in town. Plus, a short drive brings you to Monterey, Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo. As much as I enjoy visiting those areas, I’m equally as happy to see them in my rear-view mirror as I head back to my home of King City. A partial list of what this small city has to offer: • 9-hole public golf course • Beautiful county park complete with camping/RV hook-ups and the Monterey County Ag & Rural Life Museum • An airport, home to the Tutima Academy of Aviation Safety • Parks & Recreation Center with pool and racquetball court • Tennis Courts • Numerous sports fields • Movie theater • Farmers Market (May – October) • Some of the best Mexican food outside of Mexico • Monterey County Wine trail tasting rooms • Highly active service & social clubs • Monterey International Wine Competition • Fairgrounds with newly remodeled facilities; home of the annual Salinas Valley Fair

Once in a while I overhear someone saying there’s nothing to do in King City. They simply must not be looking. In addition to the above, just outside of town we enjoy leisure activities at Pinnacles National Park, Lake Nacimiento, Lake San Antonio, San Antonio Mission, and Fort Hunter Liggett Military Reserve. I could go on, but you get the point. I am honored to have served as the mayor of King City since 2010. As with any city we have our issues. But we have a wonderful core of caring people and I continue to be optimistic about the future. I encourage you to get involved and enjoy all that the city has to offer. And if you’re ever looking for an idea of something to do, just give me a call.... Thanks. Robert Cullen, Mayor City of King

King City History The City of King is located on Highway 101 in the Salinas Valley, 155 miles south of San Francisco and 277 miles north of Los Angeles. The population in the city has been relatively slow. In 2010, the city’s population was 12,874 residents and in 2014, the population 13,211 residents. The city is multicultural and family oriented rooted in a strong agricultural economy. Agriculture is the dominant industry in the City. Thirty-eight (38%) percent of the City’s population is employed by the agricultural sector, followed by other major employers including education (11%), manufacturing (9%), and retail trade (8.5%). Agriculture contributes over $4.38 billion per year to Monterey County’s economic output. Fort Hunter Liggett, located 26 miles from the city, also plays a role in the city’s economic base. The Training Center at Fort Hunter Liggettwww.liggett.army.mil can be accessed north of the city at Jolon Road. The City was incorporated in 1911 as “City of King” and is a Charter City. The City of King derived its name from pioneer Charles H. King, who was born in New York State on May 3, 1844. In 1884 King purchased 13,000 acres of the Spanish land grant and founded the King Ranch. His crops succeeded beyond expectations in the area, causing the railroads to take note. In July 1886, the Southern Pacific completed rail lines to what became known as “King’s Station.” The City is currently working on reestablishing passenger rail service via a multimodal transit center on a site near the original train depot. King City carries its own hospital, airport, golf course, four swimming pools, a theater, college extension, a skate board park, racquet ball courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, basketball court,

its own newspaper and a radio station. These are only a few of the great things that the City of King embraces! A few nearby attractions include the Pinnacle National Park, Mission San Antonio de Padua, Monterey County Wine Country and Corridor, San Lorenzo County Park, and Robert Stanton Theater.

Shopping, Dining, Entertainment and Recreation There is no shortage of fun and exciting things to do in King City. Although we are a small town of about 13,000, our residents cherish a unique flavor of life in our close-knit community that makes us different from any place in the world. If you want malls and big box stores, you won’t find them here. We are a rural agricultural community that has most of what people need for everyday life, including a variety of stores in our King City Center and Broadway Plaza shopping centers. Our downtown provides stores with supplies including many family-owned stores that offer food and goods favored by our largely Mexican population. Our long-standing L.A. Hearne Company on Metz Road supplies products with a Western theme from clothing to goods for ranches and farms. Businesses along Highway 101 cater to travelers, many of whom are headed to Pinnacles National Park, America’s newest national park. The Garden House gift store off of Canal Street is a treasure as is A Little Bit of Country on San Antonio Drive. When looking for a place to dine, you are in luck if you desire Mexican food. Numerous downtown restaurants offer an array of authentic food found in various areas of Mexico. You won’t want to miss the tacos at Tacos La Potranca de Jalisco, the beef and chicken chimichangas at Guadalajara Restaurant, the shrimp tostadas at El Lugarcito Restaurant, the guacamole at El Sinaloense and handmade ice cream at La Michocana. Our new The Cork and Plough restaurant downtown features food and wine grown in our beautiful Salinas Valley, an area often referred to as the Salad Bowl of the World. For one of the best salad bars around, try California Gourmet Pizza. Another ethnic favorite is the Vietnam Restaurant across the street from our high school. A nice array of fast food choices and coffee shops are available near the freeway. If you are in town on a weekend, you are likely to find a chicken BBQ going on somewhere as a fundraiser for the many worthy causes our town supports. For entertainment, King City offers a three-screen King City Cinemas in our Town Square. Live theater productions are regu-

larly produced by The Stage Hands theater group which has been offering quality performances for more than 25 years. The Monterey County Dance Theatre does marvelous productions featuring young dancers twice a year. Sol Treasures, our local non-profit cultural center, offers a wide range of activities including backyard concerts during the summer, an art gallery and a delightful gift store featuring hand-crafted items. Tours of local wineries are available within a short drive. Each year in May our Salinas Valley Fair welcomes thousands of people for four days of fun and learning. The two landmark red barns on the fairgrounds offer large venues for rodeo and barrel racing events year-around. Recreation occupies many of our residents all year with programs for soccer, baseball and basketball for all ages through our King City Recreation Department. The recreation department also runs our four-pool swimming complex complete with a water slide open during the summer months .Great hiking and outdoor adventure are easily accessible at Pinnacles National Park, just a 45-minute drive to either the east or west side entrances. As well, the Los Padres National Forest and our San Antonio and Nacimiento lakes offers outdoor experiences and a splendid array of wildflowers in the springtime. San Antonio Mission is a great place to explore in the hills to the west, adjacent to Fort Hunter Liggett, a training ground for our military. San Lorenzo Park, within walking distance to King City, is referred to as the hidden jewel of the Salinas Valley with its amazing Agricultural museum, displays of vintage farm equipment, historic school house, Irrigation Museum, campground and marvelous RV park all located next to the Salinas River. Our city parks feature a skateboarding area, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, playgrounds, racquetball courts and ball fields. Overlooking San Lorenzo Creek is a nine-hole golf course. The more you visit and stay in King City, the more you will experience the unique flavor of our town.

Education Hartnell College

Hartnell College started teaching in King City in the 1990s. At first it was housed at the Gleason Center and, thanks to major funding by local donors, moved to its current location on 2nd & Broadway in 2002. Current Dean Renata Funke, oversees the programming of courses for all of South County; support staff provides one-stop services that include assessment, cashiering, counseling, some financial aid assistance, and tutoring. The King City Center offers classes Monday-Saturday and is well positioned to work with local employers, collaborate on grant projects with community agencies, and provide a hub for job training, preparation for university transfer, and lifelong learning.

King City Union School District

King City Union School District is a K-8 public school district with an enrollment of approximately 2600 students. Currently we have three K-5 elementary schools: Del Rey, Santa Lucia and King City Arts Magnet. Chalone Peaks is our middle school with grades 6-8th and the Phoenix Academy for grades 5th - 8th is our community day school. Our district has partnered with Harmony at Home and Monterey County Behavioral Health to bring counseling services back into our district. As we are fully engaged in Common Core State Standards implementation, we continue our belief that all students can learn and achieve! Please visit the district website for more information: www.kcusd.org

Monterey County Dance Theatre Monterey County Dance Theatre (MCDT) was originally the Pauline Hall Dance Studio founded by the late Pauline Hall in 1958. Pauline presented the FIRST Nutcracker Ballet in the Salinas Valley and one of the first in California in 1959. The early productions were presented in operetta format with Pauline’s recorded voice telling the story over the music to small audiences. Bringing Nutcracker into the Salinas Valley and the rural town of King City was no small endeavor. At that time, quite unlike today where Nutcracker has become well known and popularized, it was quite the opposite few knew the story or music. Pauline staged full productions of the ballet in 1964 using her innate determination, natural talents and her own funds! The 50th Golden anniversary of the first performance of The Nutcracker Ballet in Monterey County was marked by her daughter Jan Harkness in December 2009 with a new staging of the Christmas classic by the students of the Monterey County Dance Theatre (MCDT). MCDT proudly continues the legacy of Pauline Hall, retaining the Nutcracker in their repertory. They studio also co-produces a spring ballet and a summer dance recital for studio dancers and our community. Past spring ballets include Cinderella, Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty. The MCDT shares the same vision that art and dance can flourish anywhere if students are provided an opportunity to see, to learn, and to participate. Many MCDT students have gained acceptance with

premier schools such as San Francisco Ballet, Ballet West, Joffery Ballet of New York, University of California Irvine, North Carolina School of the Arts and Contra Costa Ballet. Pauline opened the creative door for her students and the legacy continues with MCDT. For more information about classes and productions visit their website at www.MontereyCountyDanceTheatre. com.

Pinnacles National Monument The Pinnacles, a geological marvel, offers hiking, camping to thousands. More than 23 million years ago, molten rock poured over the surface of the land, oozing through fissures as two plates comprising part of the earth’s surface ground against one another. Today remnants of that geological activity can be seen at Pinnacles National Monument, tucked in the Gabilan Mountains just east of the Salinas Valley, accessible by Highway 146. Travelers can get there from Soledad, Greenfield and King City. Huge rock formations, caves, wildflowers, nature trails and animal life greet visitors to the monument, which was created by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. Though the park has access from both its west and east sides, the two roads leading to it don’t meet within the monument, so from either direction, there’s one way in and one way out. Several trails wind their way through the park and give hikers a close-up view of the formations which have made the Pinnacles an increasingly popular destination. The huge rocks, many of them tumbled upon one another, are a fascinating study in geology and offer a marked contrast to the smooth hills which surround them. Trails dip into caves and wind past sheer cliffs, often dotted with rock climbers. Pathways take visitors through the park’s chaparral and offer glimpses of the many kinds of plant life which thrive there: live oaks, buckeye and sycamore trees, California poppies and other wildflowers, owl’s clover, manzanita, greasewood chamise, buck brush and holly leaf cherry. There’s also poison oak, so be careful. Animals that make their home in the park include black tailed deer, gray foxes, bobcats, rabbits, rodents, reptiles and bats. Bird watchers may see the California woodpecker. brown towhee, California quail, turkey vulture and other specimens. The Service has categorized the various trails into degrees of difficulty, ranging from easy to trenuous. Distances covered by the trails range form just over a mile to 7.6 miles. The monument is open all year. Both the west and east sides offer picnicking and rest-room facilities. The east side (accessible from King City via Bitterwater Road and Highway 25) is home to a more elaborate visitors center that exists on the west side. Generally speaking, Pinnacles National Monument is considered a day-use facility. The east-side visitors center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dayuse fee is $5 per vehicle (the pass is good for seven days). For more information about the park, call (831) 3894485, or write to Superintendent, Pinnacles National Monument, Paicines, CA 95043.

Chamber award winners announced

BY SAMANTHA BENGTSON The Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Citizen of the Year, Friend of the Community and Business of the Year have been determined and each were presented with their flowers and balloons on Nov. 16. Early on Nov. 16, the Chamber board members came together to discuss the public’s nominations and determine winners. This year’s Citizen of the Year is Danny Conatser. Friend of the Community is Sharlene Hughes. Business of the Year is Rio Farms. Several Chamber Board members walked down to Hughes’ office on Monday morning and gave her balloons and flowers while congratulating her as the Friend of the Community. Hughes has served on the Recreation Commission and aided in the Wine Down Wednes-

day events that helped fundraise for the King City Pools. Conatser was next on the celebratory track and the Chamber met up with him at Conatser Welding. Conatser was shocked at the recognition but took a few pictures with the Chamber members. Conatser served on the volunteer fire department for several years and was even the fire chief at one point but has relinquished that honor to George Young. The final stop was Rio Farms. All of the Chamber Award winners will be recognized on Feb. 20 at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds. This year’s Chamber nominees will be saved for consideration next year.

Wineries & Vineyards

About San Bernabe Vineyard

Owned by the Indelicato family for more than 25 years, San Bernabe Vineyard is a Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing property by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance – one of the first vineyards in California to carry this honor for stewardship of the land. It is located in King City towards the southern end of the Salinas Valley in the “sweet spot” of the Monterey growing region, with 22 distinct microclimates, well-drained soils, advanced viticulture practices and more than 20 grape varieties under cultivation. San Bernabe Vineyard borders the Salinas River to the east and ascends 1,400 feet up into the Santa Lucia foothills to the west. Vines are planted between 350 and 650 feet in elevation, with beautifully preserved open spaces in the higher hills for wildlife refuge. Approximately 3,045 acres are currently planted under vine and divided into many individual vineyard blocks. Each block has a distinct farming program that ensures its unique set of characteristics are captured and optimized.

Monterey County Wine Company

ABOUT POPPY Poppy, located in Monterey Wine Country, was founded by the Silva Family who have spent over 45 years diligently tending to the land of the beautiful Salinas Valley. In 2003, the Silva family decided to channel their passions into a carefully crafted family wine–Poppy. Founded on the principles of developing consistently elegant and approachable wines, a glass of Poppy is the quintessential California wine experience. By controlling grapes sourcing and operating a state-of-the-art facil-

ity, Poppy combines age-old winemaking traditions with new world techniques that make the California wine industry one of the best. When deciding on a name, the Silva’s wanted something that spoke to the great state of California where their family had settled so many years ago. One day, while looking at wild poppies growing amongst the vines, the name was born. Celebrating the state of California and its golden blooming flowers, Poppy is a proud symbol for our great state and this great wine.

Schied Vineyards OUR STORY Al Scheid first purchased property in Monterey County in early 1972. Monterey wine grape growing was in its infancy and Al was drawn to the region for its untapped potential. Back then, Scheid Vineyards was called Monterey Farming Corporation and it was originally structured as a limited partnership. If you are over 50, you may remember that the tax laws at that time allowed investors to offset losses against regular income. Al, a graduate of Harvard Business School and an investment banker and entrepreneur, was running his own investment company and became intrigued with the idea of vineyards as a tax shelter vehicle – heavy investment on the front end and no income until at least five years into the project. After determining that it was a sound plan and Monterey County was an ideal region, Al scouted for vineyard ground, formed the Vineyard Investors 1972 limited partnership, and found a customer for 100% of the grape production before even one acre was planted. This was soon followed by the Vineyard 405 limited partnership and Al Scheid’s career in wine growing had begun.
