he results are in! I’m happy to present the Best of Pajaro Valley 2020, a showcase of the top businesses, organizations, events and people from last year. As I said when voting began, these awards are not the Pajaronian’s— they are yours. For a month the Pajaro Valley community had the chance to vote for its favorites and determine the best of the best. In some categories, community staples continued to reign supreme. In others, up-and-coming businesses landed at the top of the community’s list. Every year we like to carry a theme for our Best of Pajaro Valley, and this year was no different. It’s the end of an era and the start of another. The Star Wars franchise closed out its new trilogy in December with “Rise of Skywalker” and at the same time Watsonville is seeing a new, young wave of business owners and local leaders emerge. Our theme for this year, Best of Pajaro Valley: The Rise of the Millennial, was a way for us to showcase the steady changing of the guard currently ongoing in our youth-heavy city. As such, this year our top award, Favorite Local Millennial, was our way of ushering in the young leaders that will be fixtures in this community for the foreseeable future. As excited as I was to see the nominations start to roll in and the nominees rake in the votes, it pales in comparison to the excitement I have now knowing the winners and awaiting feedback from the community. Do you agree with the results? Do you have a suggestion for next year’s awards? Send them my way. I want to hear every suggestion and every critique—maybe even a few words of praise, too—so we can continue to make this yearly showcase into what it should be: awards of the people, by the people, for the people. Congrats to the winners!

Best Construction Company Granite Construction Incorporated Granite Construction has a national workforce of 7,200 and a combined revenue of $3.4 billion annually. Deeply embedded in their nearly 100-year history is a culture of hard work, honesty and getting the job done right. Granite’s roots are traceable to California construction license No. 89, one of the first 100

licenses. Hard work and unfaltering tenacity led them from quarrying granite rock, the stone that built the west, to paving the first roads into Yosemite and now to helping rebuild Ground Zero. Granite is—and will continue to be—part of a story much bigger than itself. The work they do today will have an impact on countless future generations—and they don’t take the responsibility lightly. They follow a comprehensive approach to sustainability, one that reduces their environmental impact and fosters positive community interactions in all aspects of their business.

Do you take pride in being a Millennial? Yes, I take pride in being a millennial, or an old millennial at this point. I feel grateful to be part of the generation that had the distinct honor of closing one Millennium and ushering the beginning of another. I am thankful for all the contributions made by the generations that came before us, and despite the uncertainty of the world we currently inhabit, I’m happy that these are “the interesting times” that we were chosen to live in. And I, like many millennials, am thankful to have been shaped by things such as the rise of the cell phone and the internet, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Titanic, 9/11, The Real Slim Shady, the Great Recession, and both the election of both Barack Obama and Donald Trump. I am proud of who I am today, even though I recognize that we can always be better.

What are the biggest issues facing your generation? The biggest challenge facing millennials today is the lack of a level playing field. This is especially true for millennials of color and those that grew up in poverty. Speaking for myself, I have always been startled by my parent’s unshakable faith in the potential of this nation. Even today, with a federal government openly expressing its disdain for immigrants like my parents, my mother and father continue to be thankful for the life they were able to build in this nation. This is a difficult reality for me to reconcile. My parents worked in the agricultural industry for decades where my father eventually rose to become a top organic berry grower for Reiter Affiliated Companies. But I was also witness to the price both my parents paid with the deterioration of their knees, their back and their joints. I also saw them work in an industry that did not provide them with health insurance, vacation time or a wage that reflected the arduous physical labor associated with helping to create a thriving

multi-million dollar industry. But my parents willingly accepted these challenges and made the necessary sacrifices because they believed in the adage that hard work would eventually pay off. But in 37 years of life I’ve experienced, that no longer seems to be the case anymore. Public education, which was always meant to be the great equalizer in any society, will require this nation’s youth to go into deep debt to access higher education. Additionally, to be sick or poor is an expensive prospect in this nation, especially in unaffordable communities of color that continue to invest heavily in the fastfood industry and car-centric city designs. And finally, the chances of achieving the American Dream of owning a home in the city where you were born and raised fade each year with the rising in the cost of living throughout the Central Coast and stalled wages. Unless you have $100,000 or more in cash for a downpayment, it’s very difficult to purchase a home in the Pajaro Valley.

How do you envision the future of the Pajaro Valley? I am uncertain as to what the future of the Pajaro Valley may be. There is no point in denying the dangers of climate change because they are a reality now. I worry about the future of our fertile land, our oceans and those that may have to endure these extreme conditions. I also worry about our inability to find common ground anymore, with groups adhering to rigid ideologies that do not allow for flexibility to adequately address the imperfections of being human. Important issues such as immigration, gentrification, public education, health and many others may never be addressed because we are unable to consider other perspectives, lived experiences or fears and hopes. In my year as Mayor, I came to understand that the vast majority of people, regardless of sex, race, religion, national

origin, etc., are humble and hardworking individuals trying to provide for their families and themselves. Life is a constant challenge for all of us, but despite the absurdity found in this world, we should strive to connect with as many people as possible and truly work towards building community.

Of your accomplishments from 2019, which are you most proud of? In 2019, there were many accomplishments I was proud of. There are far too many to consider. But there are two that will always stand out in my mind. The first was having the honor of serving as Mayor for my hometown. I did my absolute best to represent and uphold the values that make this city great. I enjoyed the journey, I was able to laugh at myself and cry with my fellow residents, and I grew as a person. I will never forget the support I received from the community and I will cherish the memories. Until a few months ago, it was the highest honor of my life. Which leads me to the accomplishment that I am most proud of from the past year. In December 2019, my wife and I have found out that we would welcome our first child into this world. There was a time when I wasn’t sure if this would be possible, and in the emptiness of that uncertainty, I chose to dedicate myself to public service and improving the quality of life for all who reside in the Pajaro Valley. Today, I continue committed to purpose for the foreseeable future, but hopefully, I will pursue it with a heart filled with even more love.
