New Kids on the Block take fans back New Kids on the Block reformed They have a concert cruise and Popular late‐'80s boy band has Donnie W.: You can criticize, but last year for successful tour new tour coming up this year thoughtful perspective on past you don't know the whole story

NEW YORK (CNN) ‐‐ Twenty years ago, when the New Kids on The Block were wearing their hair almost as high as their fame, the music business was a vastly different animal. There was no "American Idol." No such thing as a download, legal or otherwise. People collected posters, not ringtones. But it appears something has carried over from that distant era. Something loud, something jumpy, something ready to roar: Blockheads (or to those not familiar with boy band lingo, fans of New Kids on the Block). As a "look who's laughing now" to those who thought reuniting for a new album and tour was a ridiculous idea, the group's past followers came out in droves last year to see Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Jonathan Knight and Danny Wood give some new choreography a whirl at concert venues around the world. "I think a special thing happened out there on the road," Wahlberg said. "I think the fans came back not quite knowing what to expect but determined to have a great time. And we came back not quite knowing what to expect [but] determined to have a great time and determined to put on a great show. And I think we all got there and became teenagers again. It was pretty cool." So cool that the band has announced a whole new set of North American concert dates they're calling the "Full Service" tour. The 34‐stop trek kicks off in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 28 and winds up in Houston, Texas, on July 18. Tickets go on sale Friday. But before the tour, New Kids on the Block will hit the high seas ‐‐ along with boatloads of Blockheads ‐‐ for a three‐day concert cruise in the Bahamas in mid‐May. "The cruise is the one area where we've completely lost our minds," Wahlberg said. "We're going to have to answer to thousands of fans on the boat. It's going to be insane." But perhaps not as insane as things might've been if this were still the '80s. The band members ‐‐ now 40ish, and all but one of them fathers ‐‐ concede that they've mellowed considerably, and so has their 30‐something female fan base. "We didn't just go completely bonkers and stop being adults," Wahlberg said of the 2008 tour. "The fans didn't hang out in front of the hotel, singing songs for 20 hours straight. They just got hotel rooms and hung out in the lobby and met us for drinks at the bar." Cheers to that. New Kids on the Block recently hung out with CNN and talked about surprising the skeptics, the boy‐band stigma and how the music business has changed in the 15 years since they disbanded. The following is an edited version of the interview.

CNN: What's the biggest change you've noticed in the music business? Joey McIntyre: The music business has changed incredibly. There used to be 50 record companies. Now there's only three, and it's just getting smaller and smaller. But then again, you have the Internet, so anybody who has music can get it out there. Jordan Knight: We also come from an era where getting on stage and performing, really honing the craft of performing on stage, was important. So lucky for us we have that background, and even though record sales are down, concert ticket sales are up, and that favors us, because that's what we mainly like to do. We like to perform. CNN: When you left the spotlight, bands like 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys moved in and flourished. Was it difficult for you to watch them take the torch and run with it? Donnie Wahlberg: I found no bother in other boy bands taking the spotlight for a number of reasons: A, I was not interested in that spotlight myself. B, it was their time. C, we weren't even in a band anymore. I was doing other things ... McIntyre: It sounds like a comedy skit where we're furious over it! Wahlberg: Yeah, like "Damn it! Why are they being so successful?" McIntyre: "We've got to find a way to ruin it!" Wahlberg: When we came out, there was MTV, and that was it. And there wasn't room for another band like us. ... And when we went away, the music business changed. Suddenly, there were all these different avenues and outlets. ... So you could have three, four, five boy bands, and they could all be very successful. And that was more fascinating to me than anything else. Anybody who was as successful as those guys were ‐‐ be it Backstreet or 'N Sync ‐‐ it takes so much hard work to be successful. I can only respect [that]. We had a backlash on us, so to come out as a boy band after us and to have the perseverance to succeed and overcome a lot of doors that were closed from people hating on us ... they deserve credit for that. And we deserve credit now for coming back and overcoming hurdles that are there now for us. CNN: What are the biggest hurdles? Wahlberg: The whole concept of us coming back, honestly, was met with skepticism by a lot of people. ... All the record companies thought when (other boy bands) were thriving, that was the time that we should come back. But it was their time; it wasn't our time. ... The fact that 90 percent of the people who discussed this with us thought it was crazy or thought we'd do a barnstorming tour at best, that in itself is a hurdle, because we had to walk away. We had to all make a commitment to do this. We all had things in our lives that we were doing, that we were committed to. ... But we believed, and fortunately the fans believed and came back in bigger numbers than we ever imagined and made a lot of people look wrong. It even surprised us. CNN: Boy bands traditionally get a bit of a hard rap, don't they? You're often dismissed as overly choreographed, a little bit cheesy. Wahlberg: I think it's easy to criticize things that you maybe don't quite know the story on. But the reality is, we're in the music business. John Mayer might be able to play the guitar better than any of us ... but we all signed record contracts. We've all made a decision to make our career in this business. So to scoff at people because they do something different or don't do what you would do is silly. Fortunately, we haven't really found that this time around. I think people have come to understand that maybe we're a little bit different ... a little bit more of a grass‐roots band than people ever gave us credit for. We weren't picked out of thousands of people. It was a very real story, how we came together. CNN: Which one of you has changed the most? Knight: I don't think any of us have really changed. We've matured; we've mellowed a bit. We have more wisdom, but personality‐ wise, we're all the same and it's good to see. And that's what made us in the past, and that's what makes us now. Danny Wood: I think the change you would see (is when) each of us (is) individually at home with our kids and our family lives. But when we get together, it's all still the same. Wahlberg: Jon has a British accent now. Danny won't take commercial airliners anymore. Jordan only greets fans with gloves. (They all laugh.) It's a joke!

EXCLAIM!

New Kids On the Block’s Donnie Wahlberg By Greg Pratt Oh, sure, it’d be easy to write this one off. But there’s more than meets the eye here: after all, when a teen boy band get back together after a 15‐ year hiatus and are playing arenas, something big is up. Armageddon? A comeback disc, The Block, full of songs written to such a degree of catchiness it sounds as if machines have constructed and performed them? A music industry in flux and an economy in crises combining to leave people wanting to have fun, comforting music? I have no fucking idea, but Donnie Wahlberg, taking a bit of a break from his acting career to hit the road with New Kids On the Block, is reaping the benefits. Yup, this boy band from decades past is back, and, somehow, they’ve made it work. What are you up to? Just getting ready to do the daily routine: soundcheck, meet about 300 fans, stretch out, get dressed, get ready, go on stage. Sounds easy to meet 300 fans in a day, and while it is joyous, most times it takes a toll on your lower back leaning to hug 300 people in a day. But, no complaints, right? No, I’d rather get swept back from hugging people than getting kicked in the balls [laughs]. Right. So why did you decide to reunite now? [Pauses] I don’t know. I guess it’s hard to say. First and foremost, music was a big part of the inspiration. I think everyone in the group, deep down inside, knew there was a chance one day we may do it. But I don’t think anybody was giving it much consideration. The only thing I ever thought serious about was not giving into any of these quick flash‐in‐the‐pan reunions, for a “bands reunited” TV show or anything like that. I refuse to take part in that, even a True Hollywood Story, I would never participate. Much like when we younger, it was other people trying to force their agenda on us and telling the story, really, to service themselves and not to consider us and who we are first. I initially heard a song, when I was shooting a movie with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino… Which must have been great… Yeah, I’m sort of at this zenith in my acting career, working with two of the greats — ever — and holding my own and having a great time. Most people would think that being at the bottom and being down and out is when a reunion would be a great time. For me, I think it’s the opposite. I always thought the better I was doing, the more appropriate it would be to get back together with the guys. Do you feel like you guys got too much bad press in your first run? I certainly don’t think we’re the best band in the history of the world but I certainly don’t think we were the worst. We were certainly over‐praised a lot, in many instances, but I think we were under‐appreciated equally as much. You mentioned when you guys were younger, people pushing their agendas on you. Do you look back and feel that you were taken advantage of because you were younger? Well, I wouldn’t say taken advantage of. Obviously we were put in a position to do really spectacular things. I can’t give you a woe story, like we were robbed by everyone and swindled and stuff like that. That’s not really what happened. So many people just threw another idea at us and another idea and they all throw it with the mindset that this doesn’t last forever. It’s not an incorrect thing to say, either. “This won’t last forever, guys, get all the money you can while you can.” It’s just that we didn’t always feel that way. You know, we’re on a plane flying to Tokyo and they need T‐shirts in Kmart in the next two minutes, somebody’s gotta approve it. If we’re not there to do it, someone’s gonna do it… so many things were just overlooked. We thought, if the group runs its course and we’re just a teen band that never does anything else, so be it. We’ll make a few less million bucks and try to maintain some dignity. But it was hard to do that throughout the course of the group. It was hard to stay on top of that stuff. Do you feel you did end it with dignity the first time around? I do. We went out on our terms; we made possibly our best album, in ’94, Face the Music. We felt great about it. We were performing at a high level just to smaller crowds, but we felt we were really at our best. That, at the end of the day, was a beautiful thing to experience. We always preached that it’s not about the success and how many records you sell; it’s about being good to your fans and giving it your all. We always preached that, but it’s easy to preach that when you’re playing to 70,000 people in one night. But to be playing for 1,000 people and giving it your all after being that successful, I really felt proud of the group at that

point. And had that not happened, I probably would not have ever gotten back together with the group. Do you want more musical credibility? Is that something as a band you wish you had more of? Well, you know, credibility, what is it? The more time passes, the less credibility matters in the world. We judge people’s credibility on TMZ.com these days. What I’ve found is the more you look for credibility, the less you recognize the people who do appreciate you. Our most well‐received album from the critics was our smallest‐selling album; that’s not to say that it’s a disappointment. Look, sure, everybody wants to be respected and appreciated but I’ve learned it’s really about self‐respect. When I get off the stage every night, I know I left it all out there for the fans; I gave them everything I’ve got. One thousand miles away from my kids, my personal career is on hold to do this, to make music and perform again, to really try to put a final chapter on this the way we want to do it. Who are your fans now? Is it 15‐year‐old girls like it used to be, or is it the same girls it was before, 15 years later? Certainly for the most part it’s the old fans grown up. I thought 30‐to‐40‐year‐old fans we’d have locked up, that would be our audience. What I didn’t realize was there were so many fans who were five or six years old who loved us when we came out the first time. Those fans are 25, 26, 27, 28 years old now. They are a huge portion of the crowd. So can fans expect more albums and tours? We’ll see. We’ll go out in the summer and after that we’ll have to figure it out. I know that… [pause] Well, we’ll see. I really can’t say right now, I have no idea. What about your acting career, you kind of have that on hold right now while you’re on the road? Well, I executive produced and starred in a pilot for an American network, TNT, and I’m going to go shoot that series after the summer touring. So I’m still doing all my other stuff, just managing it around the New Kids. I guess I’ve got a hell of a part‐time job with the New Kids.

New Kids on Block reignited and headed to Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids by Lorilee Craker | The Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS ‐‐ There's nothing warm and fuzzy about Donnie Wahlberg. The New Kids on the Block singer and actor has played no fewer than a dozen cops ‐‐ good, bad, dirty and deranged. His last movie, "Righteous Kill," had him slamming thugs into walls alongside Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro. He does not suffer fools gladly, onscreen or off. That's why the other big piece of his career, as a member of late‐'80s, early‐'90s heartthrob boy band New Kids on the Block, is at first hard to reconcile, maybe even for him. "We've had so many offers from so many people over the years, but I've always protected the asset," Wahlberg said in a phone interview from New York, where he was touring with NKOTB. "I was the last holdout, and I was against any reunion that didn't come from us. There were always people coming to us who wanted to take advantage of the group and the brand. We have gone out and proven we could do this on our own terms." Those terms: To release an album and promote it with a tour that would provide "redemption" for the band and its fans, he said. "The Block" debuted in September 2008 ‐‐ their first since 1994's "Face the Music" ‐‐ and featured such sundry contributors as Lady GaGa, Ne‐Yo, Akon and The Pussycat Dolls. "Instead of us coming out with a greatest‐hits album, just dusting off the old stuff and making lots of money, we wanted to make an album that mattered to us," Wahlberg said. "We made a fun album, with songs that are very personal and very serious. Over the years, I've often thought I'd like to experience the group with that feeling of self‐respect ‐‐ instead of just the fame and hysteria."

USA

SAY NOW

At 15, Wahlberg was the first of the Kids recruited by producer Maurice Starr, who was behind Bobby Brown's New Edition. He wanted to create "the first white boy band," and when auditions were held in Boston in 1984, 500‐plus teenaged boys tried out. Wahlberg drafted his little brother, Mark, best friend Danny Wood, school chum Jordan Knight and his brother, Jonathan. When Mark dropped out (he went on to head Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, which scored a No. 1 hit with "Good Vibrations"), Starr replaced him with 11‐year‐old Joey McIntyre, and the band was born. It wasn't until 1988's "Hangin' Tough" that radio stations perked up ‐‐ and fans went berserk. By 1990, NKOTB was the most swooned‐after band in the world, and Wahlberg's face ‐‐ along with his bandmates ‐‐ adorned T‐ shirts, lunch boxes, dolls, trading cards and a Saturday‐morning cartoon. During their five‐year reign, they packed arenas and sold more than 80 million albums worldwide, setting the tone for boy bands, such as 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, to follow. Somehow the frenzy wasn't overwhelming to the teamster's son from Dorchester, a working‐class Boston neighborhood. "I've always sort of had the ability to stay calm in the middle of the storm," he said. "We had nine kids, grandparents, relatives, a dog and a cat ‐‐ 15 loud individuals ‐‐ in one house with three bedrooms. The chaos never bothered me." Wahlberg, 39, may have been chill with the bedlam of 1990, but he never expected the pandemonium to have a Part 2 when the band ‐‐ whose members are now well into their 30s ‐‐ reunited for this tour 19 years later. "We didn't plan on going back into the hysteria, because we didn't know there would be hysteria," he said. Ah, but he shouldn't have underestimated the zest of grownup girls who never forgot their first teen‐idol crushes. Women who toted his likeness on their lunch boxes are returning in droves to see him, Joey, Jordan, Jonathan and Danny show off the "Right Stuff" on stage. Wahlberg still may not be warm and fuzzy, but he has a soft spot for those Kids' devotees who have held the torch all these years. "I have a whole new appreciation for our fans," he said. "For them, we set out to do a tour that's competitive with anything out there, and so far (concert goers) have never said they were anything but blown away by the show." The Kids are (still) all right

If it’s been a few years since your head hit your New Kids on the Block pillowcase and you can’t remember where you put your stash of NKOTB trading cards, here’s a quick refresher on who’s who — then and now. '80s teen idol Debbie Gibson; appeared on third season of Joey McIntyre Danny Wood VH1's "The Surreal Life'' and later on "The Surreal Life: Fame Age: 36 Known as: The baby of the band (some would say the cutie), joining just before his 12th birthday to replace early member Jamie Kelley Back then: He and the rest of the band were sued for pain and suffering in 1991 by three fans and a mom after a stampede at one of their gigs caused 17 fans to be taken to the hospital. Since then: Had a solo hit in 1999 with "Stay the Same''; played teacher Colin Flynn on Fox's "Boston Public''; acted in theater, including "Wicked'' on Broadway; came in third on the first season of "Dancing with the Stars.'' He's also the only member of NKOTB who has played the Resch Center before. He was part of the cast of "Dancing with the Stars — The Tour'' there in 2007. Once said: "I'm moody. I get rude sometimes. … I get so anal about stuff.''

Jordan Knight Age: 37 Known as: Most often the group's lead singer and the unofficial "hot one'' Back then: He was involved in an incident at an Atlanta bar in 1990 after his bodyguard allegedly assaulted two people. Since then: Had a 1991 solo hit with "Give It to You''; released "Love Songs'' in 2006, which included a duet with

USA NKOTB

Games'' Once said: "The question should be: What haven't I seen merchandised by the New Kids? … The dolls didn't bother me, but there were these other stuffed dolls that looked nothing like us. I didn't like those.''

Donnie Wahlberg Age: 39 Known as: The bad boy of the band – the one most likely to use profanity on live TV Back then: He fell through an unlocked trapdoor in the middle of a concert in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1990. A year later, he was arrested after allegedly setting fire to the carpet outside two hotel rooms in Louisville, Ky. Since then: Carved out a respectable acting career in films like "The Sixth Sense,'' "Righteous Kill' and several "Saw'' movies as well as TV's "Band of Brothers'' and "Boomtown''; regular on the celeb poker circuit and at Boston Celtics games; older brother of Mark Wahlberg (formerly of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch); reportedly a driving forcing behind the NKOTB reunion Once said: "There were times that some of our songs were crap, and, deservedly so, they were criticized.''

Age: 37 Known as: The one who worked the hardest and was the most dedicated and consistent Back then: He injured his ankle when he tripped over a stuffed animal thrown on stage by a fan on the band's first European tour. He flew back to Boston for treatment. Since then: Released a couple of solo R&B/pop albums; dabbled in acting; founded Damage Records; appeared on MTV reality show "Totally Boyband''; taken an interest in tattoos Once said: "We were famous at a time when fashion was the worst, and the music and the style of production was not that great. To watch it, I cringe. Not at everything, but at a lot of it.''

Jonathan Knight Age: 40 Known as: Jordan's older, quieter brother. He was also the first to jump ship from NKOTB. Back then: Suffered from panic attacks Since then: Mostly stayed out of the spotlight; dated teen idol Tiffany in the late '90s; pursued a career in real estate Once said: "Sometimes back then, it got real scary, especially at airports. The most I got were some scratches, but those crowds could get out of the control.''

New Kids on the Block impress Van Andel Arena fans with old favorites by Beth Heinen Bell | The Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS ‐‐ With all the screams echoing from Van Andel Arena Saturday night, you'd think it was 1990 all over again. Then again, maybe it was in the minds of the 6,500 women ‐‐ plus a handful of men ‐‐ who turned out to welcome pop sensation New Kids on the Block back to the music scene. "We got to touch their hands. We're the luckiest girls ever," squealed Missy Post, 29, of Muskegon, as the last strains of NKOTB's encore, "Hangin' Tough," faded away. "Oh my god, I'm like, 9 years old again!" Although it has been 15 years since the pop sensation's height of fame, the Kids gave fans what they came to see ‐‐ a marathon, 2 1/2hour, 22‐song set. Now well into their 30s, the former teen idols didn't seem to mind dusting off the songs that made them famous, including "Step by Step," "Cover Girl" and "You Got It (The Right Stuff)." Members Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood and Donnie Wahlberg, showed up in decidedly more adult outfits than they wore in their heyday. Yet they still played the boy‐band role onstage, showing off dance moves that evoked raucous screams from the crowd. They also trotted out a few tunes from their "new" album, "The Block," which came out last fall. And judging by the many people singing along to the new material, the group's fan base still finds the Kids appealing. "Even as old as they are, they still can move like they used to, and they put on a great show," said Angie Negron, 29, of Chicago. Negron has spent the past few weeks crisscrossing the Midwest to attend NKOTB concerts. Saturday's show was her seventh of this tour, and she plans to attend at least one more before calling it quits. Negron said she has spent "probably over $4,000" on tickets and VIP passes alone. "My husband's about to divorce me, and my mom says I'm crazy," she said. "But I've been a fan since I was 9, and there's probably not any other band in the world I'd waste that much money on.

They're all so awesome." Saturday's show marked exactly one year since the guys of NKOTB announced on NBC's "Today" show that they were reuniting. It was a milestone Wahlberg ‐‐ the band's unofficial emcee for the evening ‐‐ brought up several times throughout the show. "It's kind of incredible, after all these years, that you guys would be here," he told the audience. "This is the heart of America, for real. For you to be here for us ‐‐ that means so much to us. I'm feelin' the love right here." Wahlberg and the rest of the crew made sure the audience felt that love, too. With several butt shots on the larger‐than‐life video screen, gratuitous crotch grabs and a bared chest here and there, NKOTB made no secret of the fact that this show was for women ‐‐ the fans who made them famous in the first place. (Van Andel Arena was in one the fact, too, and converted several of the arena's men's restrooms into women's for the evening.) Still, the fans ‐‐ many of them drinking beverages they weren't legally allowed to purchase the last time NKOTB came to town ‐‐ ate it up, even throwing a few bras onstage to show their appreciation. "This was, like, the best concert ever," said Megan Lapasky, 30, who drove two hours from New Hudson to see the show. "I used to roller‐skate around, listening to them. They were hot back then, but now they're like the hottest guys I've ever seen. (The show) was worth every penny and every mile I drove." First, JabbaWockeez Dance group JabaWockez kicked off the evening Saturday with an action‐ packed, 20‐minute blend of hip‐hop, spins, pratfalls and even some Michael Jackson moves. The original winners of MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" pulled off a medley of several hit songs, including singer Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." The ensemble received its loudest applause with a dance version of ‐‐ what else? ‐‐ New Kids' "You Got It (The Right Stuff)." E‐mail the author of this story: yourlife@grpress.com

Sorry to all for my lack of posting a blog in such a long time. Spring is here and I’m loving being able to get outside in the fresh air. Kids have been around the block: Grown‐up band finds teenage fans 'trippy'

By: Jim Abbott Joey McIntyre is on the road again, but not with Dancing with the Stars. "I'd like to get that a little lower down on the resumé," McIntyre says, laughing, in a phone interview from his Los Angeles home. "Not that I'm not proud of it. I have a great sense of humour about it. I learned a lot from that show." Yet in a career that includes a leading‐man stint on Broadway and a role on TV's Boston Public, it's not the thing for which he most wants to be remembered. No worries. That undoubtedly will be New Kids on the Block, the boy‐band‐that‐begat‐all‐boy‐bands that is once again inspiring screams on a well‐received reunion tour stopping at the MTS Centre Thursday evening. Without Dancing with the Stars, it might not have happened, McIntyre says."The manager for that tour, Jared Paul, is our manager now," he says. "It's how we started working together. I saw how he worked and how he put that tour together. I thought he was capable and knew the animal enough that if we wanted to make it happen, he could facilitate it. That was definitely part of turning the ignition." Now that the engine is running, McIntyre says that the experience is fun, if occasionally weird. At 36, McIntyre is about 10 years older than many of the original fans who are returning to see him and other no‐longer‐kids Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood. Teenagers learning about the group from Click Click Click and the Ne‐Yo collaboration Single off the 08 album The Block are also in the mix.

"We've had a hit video with a lot of airplay, so there are these young teenage fans," McIntyre says. "I see these teenage girls looking up, screaming, and it's trippy. It's a range of emotions. "It can feel rock 'n' roll and it can feel weird at the same time. It depends on the moment. I don't know if our fans are brainwashing the next generation or they really like us, but they seem to be having a good time." That goes for the Kids on stage, too. "Yeah, it is fun," McIntyre says. "I think our fans our happy and even the critics had to give it up a bit, too." Whether it's rehearsing for a tour or putting together an album, being in the New Kids has always involved diplomatic compromise, McIntyre says. On stage, "we didn't want to run around like banshees, like we did in the day. But we didn't want to sit on stools and sing the songs. So there's more choreography now than back in the day. There were arguments and stuff, but we really hit the right vibe. "There were plenty of days when it was like, 'Oh man, how's this gonna come together?' Because we're all the bosses, you can't really bark at the boss." That relationship goes back to the group's formation, which was organic compared with the boy‐band formulas at work from the 1990s to the new era of Disney‐spawned pop stars. "We're special in the sense that it wasn't this big cattle call," McIntyre says. "It wasn't American Idol; it wasn't Making the Band. "We all have a lot of character but as performers, to come together and be on the same page is the biggest challenge. The more you do that, the more you're going for the same goal, the bigger the payoff. We were able to do that in a big way." So does McIntyre feel a sense of déjàvu when he watches the screaming fans of Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus? "My son is only 15 months, so I don't have any kids that would be following it. As far as the hysteria is concerned, I can identify with that. I don't know any of their songs." On the business side, however, Jonas Brothers' reality is vastly different, he says. "We had 10 Top‐10 records, but a lot of people said it flew under their radar because our audience was so young. Now, it's like the media has changed the way it's marketed. People respond much differently now than they did in 1989." Will there be another New Kids album and tour? "This could very well be the last hurrah, which would be great," McIntyre says. "But we enjoy the process and I think we love to do what we do. Personally, I would never close the door."

Fresno Bee

New Kids on the Block coming to Fresno Valley fans haven't lost their obsession with the group. Today, NKOTB is in full "comeback" mode with a national concert tour (which stops Thursday at Save Mart Center), a CD released last summer ("The Block"), and, of course, girls ‐‐ now women ‐‐ screaming their lungs out like it was 1989. Chavez learned about the New Kids from her big sister Marlinda. Back then the two of them never got to see the band in concert. They'll be front row when the concert comes to Fresno this week. "We'll probably both be crying," Chavez says. The sisters from Turlock already saw a show in Sacramento in October and will follow the band to Hollywood two days after the Fresno show. After a few Jordan Knight‐less months, they'll see NKOTB again in July in Concord. "It's kind of like living a childhood dream," says Chavez, now 28. "I wanted to go when I was younger, but couldn't. Now that I'm older and have a job, I can pay for my own way ... and I still get to act crazy." Chavez never gave up on NKOTB, though her favorite member, Jon Knight, pretty much disappeared during the group's hiatus. She'd listen to old cassettes in the car, or watch Jon's brother Jordan on "Surreal Life." But when the group announced its reunion last April, Chavez says, the fever struck again. She and her sister even had a New Kids on the Block day in the medical billing office where they work. Vikke Rix of Fresno was 13 when New Kids hit it big. But she was already hip to the band before its breakout single "The Right Stuff" in 1989. She's been smitten ever since going to a free concert on the Fulton Mall in September 1988. Now 33, she's seen NKOTB in concert 17 times. The Fresno show will be the fourth since their reunion. "A lot of people don't understand it," she says. "My family, they're confused." Her oldest son jokes about his mom "stalking" the band. For her, it's more about connecting to her past. SACRAMENTOBEE – nkotb are back & playing at the Save Mart Center, to the delight of their many fans in the Valley.

Carrie Chavez was 8 when she caught the fever. Jordan, Joey, Donny, Jon and Danny ‐‐ if you're like Chavez, we don't need to say more. You know exactly who we're talking about. Twenty years ago, New Kids on the Block were an obsession for young girls everywhere. Girls like Chavez, 8 at the time, knew every word to "Hangin' Tough" and "You Got It (The Right Stuff)." They collected sweaters, buttons, posters, VHS tapes and anything else bearing the face of their favorite New Kid.

"My whole childhood was wrapped around them," Rix says. "My whole teenage life. We used to babysit all the neighborhood kids to scrape together money [to buy] blankets, pillow cases, bracelets, earrings, shoelaces ‐‐ whatever they came out with. And I still have it all." On the younger end of the fan spectrum is Devin Mendoza. She'll turn 21 next week, then she'll see NKOTB a couple days later. If you're trying to figure out the math there, don't bother. The "Hangin' Tough" album is only five months older than she is. "I'm a sucker for the five‐member boy bands," she says. "My friends make fun of me for it. 'Devin, you weren't even born, why do you like them?' I'm true to my boy‐band roots." When Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync brought boy bands back in the late '90s, then‐fourth grader Mendoza was hooked. She kept hearing the comparisons to New Kids on the Block, so she checked them out too. She was hooked again. So while most fans will be in the Save Mart Center on Thursday night reliving their youth, Mendoza will be experiencing NKOTB fever for the first time: "My parents' friends are totally jealous that I'm going to the concert and they're not."

GreenBay Press Gazette Kendra Meinert column: NKOTB get female fans in touch with their inner little girl Not all concert crowds are created equally. Some are nondescript. Some are serious. Some are scary. But as far as undeniably happy and fun, it's tough to beat the New Kids on the Block fans Tuesday night at the Resch Center. These were the women who grew up with the boy band in their crazy, star‐adoring youth and circled back for irresistible seconds some 15 years later. Green Bay native Kelly James was in sixth grade when her 18‐year‐old aunt — "cool aunt'' Muria Shafel — took her to see NKOTB at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 1990, at the height of the band's fan feeding frenzy. It was a dream come true for James, whose bedroom was pillowcases to comforter NKOTB. For the record, she was a Jordan Knight girl. "I thought he was the cutest one. He had dark hair like Rick Springfield and Steve Perry of Journey. I think that was my rock star thing,'' said James, a teacher in Chicago who made the trip home during spring break for Tuesday's show.

And yep, Shafel came with her, too — a birthday treat. "Now that I'm older, I'm taking her,'' James said. Shafel's daughter, 15‐year‐old Jordan, made it a three‐generation outing and found it all a little "crazy.'' Sarah Spychalski and Cassie Burg, both of Lena, and Gypsy Tingle of Green Bay were part of a pack of eight who showed up in homemade T‐shirts each with a giant letter to spell out "WE (HEART) NKOTB.'' "It brings me back to my childhood,'' Spychalski said. "What 10‐year‐old girl in 1990 didn't like New Kids on the Block? And now we're almost 30!''

nkotbthing.com “Hangin' Tough” At The Nkotb Concert

In a matter of hours I went from shooting the Chrism Mass at the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in downtown Green Bay to shooting the New Kids on the Block concert at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon. I went from quiet prayer to screaming fans. I was actually pretty excited to shoot the concert but I think my wife was even more excited. My wife, Niki, was a big New Kids on the Block fan back in the day. She even went to their concert at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee in the late 80’s, when she was grade school. She swears that Joey pointed at her in the crowd and smiled. She was a big fan or what I call obsessive. Before heading over to the arena she asked me to blow a kiss to Joey but I just laughed and said no thanks. When I arrived at the Resch Center I saw a lot of throw back images from the hot pink pumps to the over‐size NKOTB buttons to crimped hair‐dos. It was classic. I must say that I’ve never heard women, and some guys, scream so loud. The place was rocking as NKOTB sang their trademark songs and performed their trademark dance moves. I’ve photographed a lot of concerts over the years and this one will probably go down as one of the most entertaining. So even though my wife didn’t get to the concert she was the first one to see my images. Joey included.

Photos, blog: New Kids' second time around is a blast ASHWAUBENON ‐‐ You can take the girl out of the New Kids on the Block pajamas, but you can’t take the NKOTB out of the girl. Even if she’s pushing 30. And driving a minivan. And pregnant. And bought a “Step by Step’’ baby onesie at the merch booth for $25. Because when Joey dropped to his knees mid‐“Please Don’t Go Girl,’’ when Jordan stepped in front of the stage fan with his white shirt undone to croon “Baby, I Believe in You,’’ when Donnie sang about his quest for a “Cover Girl’’ … well, it may as well have been 1989 all over again. (Except for maybe that choreography where they all grabbed themselves in sync. A classic move or what happens when New Kids grow up?) But it was definitely girls’ night out Tuesday at the Resch Center, where 3,691 fans screamed themselves into a frenzy at the sound of the bubble‐gum pop of their youth come to life – extra sweet and with fresh gloss ‐‐ nearly two decades later. Any guys in the house? Guys? You mean not counting the seven masked MTV dance champs of Jabbawockeez, who opened the show? They were few and far between in the sea of lighted tiaras, blinking pompoms, flashing pins, glittery homemade T‐shirts, neon pink jelly bracelets and the occasional airborne bra, but the ones who were there gave new meaning

to the notion of “Hangin’ Tough.’’ No matter if you were an old‐school NKOTB fan in a “Before Justin There Was Jordan’’ T‐shirt or a newbie in a “Blockhead in Training’’ tee, the return of the late ’80s/early ’90s boy‐ band extraordinaire – Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and Jonathan Knight – was worth getting giddy over. Like the hyped video‐ screen intro said: “15 years ago. They walked away. One year ago. They shocked the world. Tonight. The party continues. Are. You. Ready?’’ From the moment they rose from a platform within the stage, it was a lovefest. Every slow‐motion dance step, every hip shake, every electric‐slide move drove ’em wild. And why not? From oldies “You Got It (The Right Stuff)’’ and “My Favorite Girl’’ to the more mature R&B stylings of “Grown Man’’ and “Dirty Dancing’’ off last year’s “The Block,’’ the two‐hour show was choreographed to perfection and executed with such vocal sheen that it dared you to make an aging Kids jokes. There was no weak link in the chain of five. Jordan Knight can still unleash the soaring Bee Gees‐esque vocals on ballads like “I’ll Be Loving You (Forever).’’ McIntyre, in a fedora, white shirt and undone bowtie, is the baby with the soul of an old song‐and‐dance man. Wood busted out some serious street moves. Elder

statesman Jonathan Knight, at 40, remains “the quiet one,’’ content to be part of the collective rather than step out into the spotlight. And then there’s Wahlberg, the extrovert, the host of the party, the mouth. After leading the crowd in an excruciating scream‐a‐thon, he commanded a mass “shake that a‐‐’’ for the video cameras. He gave them props for coming out on a Tuesday night when they could’ve stayed home to watch “American Idol.’’ He even put on a cheesehead‐style baseball cap. “I’ve got to be one smooth cat if I can make this frickin’ cheese cap look good.’’ Throw in enough costume changes to rival a Cher show, four female dancers to sex things up, a surprise rendezvous on a revolving circular stage with a piano at the back of the arena for a sweet sing‐along of fan ode “Tonight’’ (and a small army to get the guys back to the main stage), and it was a night of nostalgia that felt fresh. Yeah, they’ve been around the block a few times. But so have their fans, many whom haven’t seen them live since they were in middle school. For them, as the song goes, “First time was a great time, second time was a blast.’’ Coming in Thursday’s Weekend section: Fans at the show ’fess up to their NKOTB heyday.

Sturgis Journal The Farr Side: Return of New Kids is more than old times Sturgis, Mich. –

The boy band of boy bands, New Kids On The Block, still have the right stuff. Just ask my nieces, Kaitlynn and Alexis. Although neither were around to witness the NKOTB madness that was the late ’80s and early ’90s, both caught on quick as to why they were so popular. After a rousing dance number from JabbaWockeez, winners of MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew,” the five guys (they’re not kids anymore) appeared on an elevated stage amid screams from eager fans — some who’ve waited more than 15 years for this moment.

It was cool to revisit the phenomenon, at least from the girls’ aspect. Don’t forget, many of those adoring screaming little girls have all grown up. Some even shared the concert with their daughters. My nieces, though, are a part of the new generation of NKOTB fans. Last summer, the guys released “The Block” after a 15‐year hiatus. I’ll never forget Alexis telling me last summer, “Uncle David, I like that new group, New Kids On The Block.” That was shortly after she watched their video for “Summertime.” For a moment, I could see the phenomenon returning, although pictures of 40‐ year old men on sheets and pillowcases might not be a good idea now. Donnie, Danny, Joey, Jordan, and John looked well, but more importantly they sang well, too. They haven’t lost the magic or pizzazz. They opened with “My Favorite Girl” and then segued into “You Got It (The Right Stuff).” It could have easily been sold as a “greatest hits” concert, but it was more than that. They performed several tracks from “The Block,” an R&B‐infused album relevant to today’s sound and style. The new songs “Single,” “Click Click Click,” “Grown Man,” and “Twisted” were well‐received by old fans on the block, as well as new ones. The tight choreography was as in sync as ’N Sync, the boy band that came later, but to which New Kids were often compared. Danny Wood even threw in some daring break‐dance moves that only the likes of Ben Gay could fix. After all these years, he still has it. The guys made their way to a smaller carousel‐like stage at the rear of the arena for “Tonight.” It was my favorite part of the show. Other highlights included “Cover Girl,” “Please Don’t Go Girl,” “I’ll Be Loving You Forever,” “Step By Step,” and of course, “Hangin’ Tough.” Yeah, it had been 15 years since NKOTB ruled, but since then we’ve seen several boy bands come and go, including Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees and ’N Sync. Somehow, though, I knew we hadn’t seen the last of the New Kids. David T. Farr is a Journal correspondent. E‐mail him at farrboy@hotmail.com.

New Kids in on the joke, and loving it New Kids on the Block perform at the MTS Centre tonight

Near the end of New Kids on the Block's much‐anticipated reunion concert at the MTS Centre last night, singer Jordan Knight stood atop the two‐level stage, ripped his white shirt open, and clutched his naked chest while crooning Baby I Believe In You. His shirt fluttered in the winds of a hidden generator. If a single image could define the Boston‐based quintet's show that would be it: sorta cornball, sorta cheesecake, but always with a wink and a nudge. The lights went down for the headliners at 8:30 p.m., and a video screen flashed on. "Fifteen years ago... they walked away. One year ago... THEY SHOCKED THE WORLD," the screen blared, as thousands of fans screamed in anticipation. In fairness, the NKOTB reunion and its hastily assembled 2008 album, The Block, was at least surprising. Twenty‐three years after their manufactured debut, the original boy banders are now circling 40. Most thought the reunion window was long closed. Their fans are likewise all grown up. Outside the arena, instead of the line of bored parents in minivans we saw back in 1991, there were bemused husbands waiting for slightly inebriated wives. But therein lay the charm. Don't get me wrong: as a musical performance, the reunion concert was a mess. It was like show designers threw every concert cliche against a wall, and decided it all stuck. There was a momentum‐killing "dance cam" bit, where the show stopped so Danny Wood could scan the crowd to find grooving fans. There were also four badly‐used female dancers and a memorial video featuring Tupac and Heath Ledger. (It ended with images of the Kids' own departed family; it should have started there too.) The singing was... uh, not great. Original "cute one" Joey McIntyre's voice is strong, and Jordan Knight can still manage that piercing falsetto. But even with a

fortress of backing tracks propping him up on Cover Girl, Wahlberg's voice struggled, cracked, and fell flat. (I'm sorry, Donnie. I still love you. Call me?) But few in the audience were there for great musicality. They were there for a nostalgia party... and they got it. Two hours, 23 songs, and a handful of costume changes of that, in fact. If you consider that the New Kids are in on their own kitschy joke... and their gleeful on‐stage hamming suggests they are... then the show was nothing short of genius comedic entertainment. Though the Kids' dancing was slightly stiff, the choreography was tight and deliciously familiar, especially on show‐closing hits Step By Step and Hangin' Tough. (They performed the latter in Team Canada jerseys.) They flew into the air for a "pose off" snapshot at the end of Click Click Click. McIntyre won; his prize was a Canadian flag cape, which he frolicked in while declaring it was "okay as long as it doesn't touch the ground." They even stayed true to the archetypes they created. Jonathan Knight, "the quiet one," tried very hard not to be seen or heard; bad‐boy Wahlberg (along with McIntyre, the clear crowd favourite), grabbed his crotch and drew "I want to have?" on a dry erase board supplied by a fan. And playboy Jordan Knight... well, see first paragraph. It was silly. It was tongue‐in‐cheek. It wasn't art, but it was what those of us from the original NKOTB generation wanted: a frivolous night of fun, savored with the men who first taught us that boys were cute sometimes. That's all it needed to be. Concert Review New Kids on the Block: April 9 MTS Centre 3 stars out of five

I can actually finish my thought here and not be sweating to death trying to get it all in a hundred and forty characters. Aaahhhh, this is nice. Hmmm… Let me take a moment and collect my thoughts‐ what a novelty. Well, let me see… We had another amazing show in Saskatoonia that’s what I like to call it‐ I add an (ia) to it). I was hit by a recurring thought as I looked into the eyes of a girl in the front row. How will I ever explain to each of you what it means to be able to do what I do for such an audience? It’s such a blessing. It pushes me to do more. To want more. To be all the things I think I can be. And I thought of how I ‘get off’ on meeting people that to me really ‘get it.’ There is a diverse group of people that we attract and it mirrors the diversity of this group. And when you find those moments with people when you are on the same page‐ whether its a look or a comment or a joke or a story‐ and you really connect… Well, it’s like sex to me. It’s that good. And it turns me on and it makes me want more. Now put that in your twit and smoke it. ‐jm

Regina Leader-post The Kids are back

Danny Wood says the biggest challenge of the New Kids on the Block's reunion tour has been leaving their families at home. Photograph by: (Getty Images), (Getty Images)

The concept of boys singing and dancing to music written primarily by others was not pioneered by New Kids on the Block. But in terms of cultural impact and historical relevance, it might as well have been. The Boston‐bred group, back together after a 14‐year layoff between albums, is widely cited as the pre‐eminent teen act of the 1980s. At one point, their audience approval ratings threatened even those of Madonna and Michael Jackson, the era's two biggest pop stars. The New Kids had danceable tunes, a parent‐approved message and good‐looking members, which resulted in album sales in the neighbourhood of 80 million copies. For a period of two years, Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Danny Wood and Donnie Wahlberg were stars of the stage and kings of the road, netting $100,000 per gig from merchandise sales alone ‐‐ the equivalent of an additional $15 from each ticket holder. And yet, despite of the group's trail‐blazing past, Wood was casually uninterested in talking about the glory days.

"It's not like we were frozen in time since 1990," Wood said curtly during an interview with Canwest News Service, in a thick Boston accent. Wood, 39, might not be the best spokesman for the group. He isn't one of the big three ‐‐ Joey, Jordan and Donnie ‐‐ nor does he appear to play an integral role in the group. However, a YouTube video finds Wahlberg name‐checking Wood as "the soul of the group." Big words indeed coming from Wahlberg, the acknowledged New Kids leader. Wood, who was unaware of the video, had this to say about his best friend's comment: "I don't know why he said that. But I think it's because I'm the stability. I'm dependable and reliable." Soulful, even. New Kids on the Block is currently on tour, hitting some Canadian dates. This is the dawning of the age of the New Kids Version 2.0, and Wood, who has four children of his own, said the band is feeling stronger than ever. "I don't think stamina is an issue. Last week we did five shows in a row, and at one point on this tour we do six in a row. I don't think we even did that back in the day. We don't have no issue with the stamina ‐‐ everyone is in good shape. It's more the sacrifice of it. We all have families and kids in school. That's the part that kind of stinks." Recording sessions in 2008 resulted in The Block, the group's sixth album and first since 1994's Face the Music. It was an immediate success upon its release, hitting No. 1 in Canada and No. 2 south of the border. Times have changed considerably since the New Kids last tasted fame, but the Internet has made things easier, not more difficult, on groups of their ilk, Wood said. "Last night in the second row, there was this girl who had a button with my face on it and she was crying. She was 16 years old, so obviously someone had to tell her about us. The good thing about how the music industry is now, you can get to people's music really fast. The younger generation might like one of the new songs we have, but they can go back and listen to all our older stuff." What helped the group back in the day was one of the smartest marketing campaigns in history, a blitz of memorabilia as unnecessary as anything George Lucas has put his name to. New Kids sleeping bags, dolls, food, clothing ‐‐ you name it, Wood and his buddies were on it. Some of it was even too much for the band, Wood said. They won't make the same mistake this time around. "I always remember this stuffed animal doll that we had," he said. "It was horrific. It was this two‐foot tall doll that didn't look like us. It was kind of creepy. We actually got them pulled out of stores when we saw them, that's how bad they were." Star Phoenix Kids have been around the block By Stephanie Classen, The StarPhoenix In the early 1990s, the New Kids on the Block had the right stuff. But after 20 years out of the spotlight, is that still the case? If the shrieking, shaking fans at Saturday's NKOTB concert in Saskatoon had anything to say about it, that's a definite yes. The five‐member Boston boy band hit Credit Union Centre for the umpteenth show of their reunion tour and the enthusiastic crowd happily lapped up every nostalgic, over‐the‐top minute. The Kids ‐‐ all pushing 40 ‐‐ put out a new album in 2008 but are smart enough to know what the people want. They want the old songs, the old dance moves and the old boy band conventions. The first three songs of the night ‐‐ Call it What You Want, My Favourite Girl and You've Got It (The Right Stuff) ‐‐ all pre‐date 1995. And the choreography to accompany them felt as familiar as a pair of worn‐in, fluorescent leg warmers. With a live band and four sexy backup dancers, the Kids blew through a catalogue of their best‐loved hits including Please Don't Go Girl, Games, Tonight, Cover Girl and I'll Be Loving You (Forever). They also played a few of their new tunes ‐‐ most notably the 2008 hit Summertime ‐‐ but those songs, with their use of dated urban slang, were forgettable. The show was pretty straightforward: Lots of hip thrusts, strobe lights and requests to "Scream!" But it also had a few genuinely odd moments. A video tribute to "those we've lost" was heartfelt when pictures of the Kids' family members and former manager were shown but completely random when the celebrity faces of Aaliyah, Kurt Cobain, Frank Sinatra and, inexplicably, Heath Ledger came up. Sure, they needed to buy time to change outfits and get to their stage at the centre of the arena, but it felt like a cheap gimmick. Vocally, the concert was just OK. Jordan can still hit those high falsettos, which is great but only if you liked them in the first place. McIntyre, just 11 when he joined the group, is by far the most listenable of the bunch. His voice has retained a boyish quality without sounding whiny and prepubescent.

Wahlberg, the crowd pleaser, knew the way to the audience's heart was simple: Say "Saskatoon!" a few thousand times and pull down his pants ‐‐ a la Marky Mark ‐‐ to reveal maple leaf underwear. The remaining two members didn't get nearly as much face time. Jonathan, who left the group due to anxiety in 1994, still seems ill at ease with being on stage. Maybe that's why he didn't get any solo time. Wood, who spent most of his time in NKOTB videos lifting weights, did get to sing a little bit, but still spent more time flexing. Overall, the night, including a Step by Step and Hangin' Tough encore, gave the fans exactly what they wanted. It might not be the right stuff for 2009, but the Kids are perfect for a trip down memory lane, 1991 style. The New Kids decided to forgo an opening band, opting instead for dance crew Jabbawockeez, winners of the reality show America's Best Dance Crew. While the choice felt like a ploy to prove NKOTB was still with it and hip, the half‐hour routine was no less entertaining. The seven‐man hip hop dance group performed an intricate set, complete with several costume changes and a sense of humour to match their slick, in synch dance moves. Without the help of wacky facial expressions ‐‐ the crew members all wear nondescript white masks ‐‐ the Jabbawockeez still got lots of laughs. During a segment called The Rules of Masculinity, the most important one being "Manly men don't dance," the dancers performed a hilarious, spot‐on version of Beyonce's Single Ladies. The crew seamlessly transitioned from moves set to Jackson 5, Kanye West and even Vanilla Ice. A short routine featuring original choreography from the New Kids' You've Got It (The Right Stuff) got the biggest cheer. sclassen@sp.canwest.com

Santa Barbara independent NKOTB’s Danny Wood on Reunions, Fans, and Stardom The Indy’s Lisa Engelbrektson Gets Under the Skin of a New Kid By Lisa Engelbrektson

Midway through the North American leg of a tour to support their recent comeback effort, Danny Wood of New Kids on the Block (NKOTB to those in the know), spent a few minutes talking shop before abruptly, and angrily, hanging up on The Independent. Before the volatile ending, however, Wood had a few enlightening things to say about getting back together with the New Kids, life between the group’s dissolve in 1994 and now, and the boys’ largely female fan base. Just don’t ask him what it was like to experience public scrutiny (allegations in ’92 of lip‐syncing, which were later denied, come to mind), because according to Wood, the past is inconsequential. So how is the New Kids’ reunion going so far? “I think a year ago we did a reunion tour,” Wood explained. “Now that we went to Europe and are back with a new record, I think the reunion is over. We’re back.” The five founding members of NKOTB, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight, and Wood officially rejoined forces in April of 2008 and now find themselves back at it after a breakup that technically lasted about five years longer than the group’s official career. “Musically, it’s the same as it was before,” said Wood. “Everyone does their own thing, but better.” While some of the boys cut solo records, launched acting careers, competed on USA Santa Barbara independent

Dancing with the Stars, or stayed out of the spotlight entirely during the time off, one has to wonder what it is that’s making things work now. “Maturity,” Wood explained. “And the 15 years apart.” Though Wood himself has taken on a solo career, he didn’t do so until recently. “I’ve been keeping busy. I have four kids and some other businesses,” he explained. “I’m involved with Halcyon Jets, where I’m VP. It’s a private aviation company. … It’s fun. I’ve been involved since the beginning.” But don’t assume the boys on the block tour via Halcyon. “We tour on busses,” Wood pointed out. “It’s more comfortable and we sleep better.” It’s fitting, perhaps, because one of the most famous images of the New Kids is of their tour buses, always surrounded by female fans who would wait hours for the band to pull into parking lots all over the nation. And so far their fans don’t seem to have grown out of the custom. “We pulled up [in Lousianna] at 9 a.m. this morning and girls were already here,” said Wood. “It’s fun; the girls are calmer.” In fact, Wood had nothing but praise for group’s largely female fan base. “We have some younger fans, [but] the core is between 25 and 35. Older fans are bringing new fans along, and the younger audience is liking our music. We run into a lot of older fans who are now independent women, successful, and in positions of power. It’s very cool.” After such a complimentary nod to the women who, as girls, bought their albums, concert tickets, lunch boxes, posters, dolls, and other miscellany merchandise, it was somewhat surprising to hear just how quickly Wood’s mood went south from there. Considering the stigmas attached to the boy band enterprise, it’s certainly no small feat that the New Kids have reemerged so prominently some 15 years after their split. Still, one has to wonder about the backlash associated with such a reunion and how music critics as a whole are reacting to the “new” New Kids. But instead of addressing the issue, Wood became irrational, demanding to know why I hadn’t read the Washington Post’s article on their recent show at Madison Square Garden. He vehemently claimed that the band is being taken very seriously in the music arena, and was then cut off by his publicist. So much for shining a light on what it’s like to grow up under a highly critical public eye. In the eyes of the New Kids, the music, the fans, and the adoration has stayed the same—and the media, for all intents and purposes, can make of it what they will. 4•1•1 The New Kids on the Block will open the Santa Barbara Bowl’s 2009 concert season this Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m. with special guest Jabbawockeez. Talented Ottawa rocker helped young bands launch careers Well‐liked musician was a master of many instruments By Lynn Saxberg Ottawa musician/producer Kirk Ellard was a hard‐rock bassist with the look of a grizzled biker, but his musical tastes leaned towards catchy melodies and sweet harmonies. Ellard, who died of cancer Tuesday at the age of 38, was a big fan of the Beatles, Brian Wilson, Billy Joel and even New Kids on the Block. Thanks to his industry connections, Ellard made it to the New Kids' recent concert at Scotiabank Place, and met the group backstage after the show. He was thrilled when singer Donnie Wahlberg gave him the ball cap he'd worn on stage.

It wasn't his first New Kids' show, noted his elder brother, Keith Ellard, who accompanied Kirk to the concert. "He had seen them at Skydome when he was 16 ‐‐ he looked like a 30‐year‐old biker at the show with the 12‐year‐old girls," laughed Keith, describing his brother as a boy who'd had a growth spurt and was shaving by the age of 12. TWAR An @reply Twitter war.

Origins: In the early morning of April 14, 2009, NKOTB member Jonathan Knight (@JonathanRKnight) challenged Joey McIntyre (@joeymcintyre) to an @reply war. Jonathan Knight tweeted to his fans during a break in the middle of the concert. Donnie Wahlberg (@DonnieWahlberg) did the same. When the concert was over, the smack talk began with Joey saying "While Jon was smokin' on the bus I was smokin' on stage." Jonathan soon replied "Joe was smoking cause his fire went out!" The smack talk continued until Jonathan playfully teased Joey by saying, "Lets battle it out tomorrow on tweetstats! May the best man win!" Jonathan dubbed the war a "TWAR": "Good one Joe But I love you too much for our epic twitter war! I see the headlines now, NK's go to TWAR! Not gonna happen!" At 1 am PST, when TweetStats.com reset, the war was on. Joey was in the lead at almost 2k @replies within two hours. Not long after TweetStats.com crashed. Alas, we may never know the winner of the TWAR but we have had fun playing. The only person(s) who has suffered because of this incident would be those that manage the TweetStats site and their server. Poor thing was burned up with all the activity. Disclaimer: This was all in fun and in no way reflects any disharmony within the group because there is none. JonathanRKnight: "Good one Joe But I love you too much for our epic twitter war! I see the headlines now, NK's go to TWAR! Not gonna happen!" A few hours later: "Before this Twar gets outta hand, I was kidding!"

More from Mac Often when we are performing the slow jam medley, I think of all the legends that came before us‐ Temptations, 4 Tops, Jackson 5, New Edition. At that moment in the show, the lights are dim, mostly spot lights so it’s very moody and I think of all the tours and road shows that have come before us. There is something so special about the sound and moves of those groups‐ the whole thing really takes me back to the soulful 60’s and 70’s‐ a classic time of showmanship that is a lost art. It’s a privilege to, in our own way, carry that torch. I wonder, in this day and age of instant everything, will the flame go out or will we be lucky enough to see it passed along. ‐jm

NKOTB Tickets on the Cheap By Brett Gillin in Heads Up

If you're toying with the idea of seeing New Kids On The Block at Cruzan Amphitheatre on May 31, you should buy your tickets this week. For $10, it's harder to find an excuse not to check them out. Seriously, even if you hate boy bands and all they stand for, can you honestly say you wouldn't get at least $10 worth of laughs at the expense of the aging band or their 30 something fans reliving their elementary school days? I thought not. Check out Live Nation for $10 through April 26th. After that, they go up to $15, which might be pushing it.

Jordan Knight... about 20 years ago • •

• •

Myka says: That picture is Jordan NOW, not 20 years ago. Even more reason to come to the show. Jenny says: Ok, seriously. Myka is 100% correct. I took a similar picture ‐ at 2 different shows, one last October (that means 2008 was the year, not 1988) and one a month ago (that means 2009 was the year, not 1989). Unless you are just a total pop music hater, the show will give you your $10 worth many times over. They may be aged 36 ‐ 40 but their show kicks a$$. It is certainly better than Britney's. Ask Myka. Katie says: Like Myka said, that pic is Jordan in 2009. I think 30‐something women could not find a better use for $10 than just to see THAT for 5 minutes. And the rest of them are looking just as good. Wonder what Brett Gillin looks like? Malina says: Wow, you obviously haven't done your research if you thought this was Jordan 20 years ago. Nope, he is THAT hot now...in 2009! These guys may be aged, but

only in numbers. They move like they are in their early 20's still and put on a very high energy and entertaining show. How many 39 year olds can break dance still? Well guess what, Danny does, EVERY night in the show. I'd like to see you even attempt that! • Brett says: Wow, you totally busted me on this one. You're right, I didn't pour hours into researching when the photo was taken. I grabbed the photo off Flickr and trusted the caption under said photo. That being said, he certainly looks great for being nearly 40. I guess toiling in obscurity for 20 years leaves plenty of time to hit the gym. .Have fun at the show. I'll be the bitter 700 pound bridge troll break dancing all over the lawn.

Santa Barbara Independent New Kids on the Block at the Santa Barbara Bowl Concert Season Kicks Off with High Energy Pop Reunion

Though they’re all pushing 40, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood, Jordan and Jonathan Knight, and Donnie Wahlberg spent Friday night proving that the New Kids On The Block are still young enough to break‐dance and harmonize their way back into the limelight. The group’s high‐energy show was reflected in the mainly‐female crowd that danced and screamed throughout the opening night concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Hundreds flocked to see the group play old favorites, as well as new hits. Many carried with them heart‐shaped signs professing their love for band members, while the New Kids tried to prove that they’re all grown up. Jabbawockeez kicked off the night America’s Best Dance Crew‐style, complete with a 10‐foot‐tall white mask (their trademark symbol) acting as their backdrop. They danced to songs ranging from Sir Mix‐A‐Lot and Vanilla Ice to Michael Jackson and Beyoncé Knowles. But the crowd didn’t truly start to feel it until the lights dimmed and the big screen projectors were fired up. Much like a soap

opera, words appeared on the screens, giving the crowd a brief history of the band from their start in 1984 to the present. The monitors then flashed an “Are you ready?” and the New Kids rose from the stage in a cloud of smoke, kicking straight into “Call It What You Want” from their Step By Step album NKOTB started with the classics, but quickly moved into newer songs from their latest album, The Block. Their song “Grown Man” even featured the Pussycat Dolls’ lead singer, Nicole Scherzinger, projected on the screen behind the singers. Half‐way through the concert, when a fan threw her panties on stage, Wahlberg picked them up and proceeded to unfold the bunched‐up bundle to reveal a thong. “I think you lost something,” laughed Wahlberg. “Oh you want me to keep it?” he then quipped to a frenzy of female screams. “Do you want me to smell it?” asked Wahlberg. Another wave of screams erupted in response. “Okay. Anyone who doesn’t want to see me sniff these should look away on the count of three.” After an elongated count‐down, Wahlberg put the underwear up to his nose and inhaled, causing the sea of fans to go crazy. With that, Wahlberg tucked the underwear into his pocket and continued his talk with the crowd. Throughout the entirety of the concert, fans could be heard yelling “Oh my God, oh my God” and professing their undying love for each member of the group. And while most of the Bowl has seating, the crowd remained standing for almost the entire length of the show. Ending the set with “Hanging Tough” and part of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” (while sporting Boston Celtics jerseys), the New Kids undoubtedly broke a couple hearts by night’s end, but promised they would return as part of their summertime tour.

Deborah Gibson, NKOTB’s Jonathan Knight Inspire New Electric Youth By Rya Backer

This past weekend, MTV premiered “Camp’d Out: I’m Going to Performing Arts Camp,” which featured three young hopefuls vying for stardom … in an Upstate New York summer‐camp performance of “Carousel.” And it looks like Debbie — sorry, Deborah — Gibson has followed suit with her own haven on the other side of the country, called Deborah Gibson’s Electric Youth. According to its Web site, the camp is “committed to offering the highest level of performing arts camp for serious young performers available in the industry.” Last night, Gibson and Ryan Black’s 88’s Cabaret hosted an Evening of Electric Youth with Deborah Gibson. It was described as “a benefit event for the Gibson Girl Foundation,” which offers scholarships to her various performance clinics. Many a performer showed up, including other teen idols of past and present: Jonathan Knight of New Kids on the Block (who also sang alongside Gibson), Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys and Nolan Gerard Funk of “Spectacular.” But the star of the show appeared to be Gibson’s stylist. According to photos of the event, Deborah Gibson’s evening saw four costume changes.

NKOTB Contest Reveals Tink! & Flies Winners To NYC by Ron Callari

In an effort to capitalize on the buzz created by "tink!" Jordan Knight and other members of the New Kids on the Block band will be flying two "contest winning" fans to NYC. The viral social media experiment originally initiated by Knight on Twitter appears to have formulated a life of its own as NKOTB fans have been tweeting themselves silly trying to figure out just what tink! means. Jordan KnightMy previous blog and poll details how Jordan surprised himself when he realized that a simple tweet could stimulate tens of thousands of tweets from his tweetin' fan base and start trending on Twitter for over a 4 day period. And with each new tweet, you could almost hear his female fans screaming across the twitterverse for more and more! I personally was inundated with over 1000 "hate" tweets by fans who didn't take lightly when I described Jordan Knight as an "aging boy band troubadour"in my previous blog. One sassy tweep that goes by the handle "@ShyPerversion" actually "twitter slapped" me each and every time I issued a new tweet that referenced tink! I have since learned my lesson by "tinking before I tweet!" So I can speak from experience that his followers come from a hearty stock. They may have been in hibernation for the last decade while NKOTB were regrouping for their comeback, but they're wide awake now and willing to beat down all naysayers who don't talk 'nice' about their favorite boy band (now men in their mid to late thirties.) However one does have to wonder if Elizabeth Hasselbeck from The View is a fan what that means for the future of NKOTB (I'm just saying...) Perhaps this video will illustrate my point... Donnie Wahlberg probably describes his followers best when he proudly claimed in one of his recent tweets that he "doesn't need CNN and Ashton Kutcher's million tweeps because he's got 50,000 soldiers who are fearless and come armed with love." In any event if you want to get involved with the "New Kids on the Block contest" will send two lucky winners to NYC May 8, 2009 to watch them perform on the Today Show. To qualify, fans are requires to send an email to: jk.todayshow.contest@gmail.com with responses to the following questions. Jordan Knight talks more about the details on this video Insider's tip: Before sending in your submission, go to Twitter's "search page" and type in "tink." Then review all the tweets that talk about the contest and what the fans are thinking! Might give you some ideas of where the collective mindset of the NKOTB fan base is going! More rules and information can be found on their official website. Good luck, and visit my previous blog to vote for what you think tink! Could possibly mean? Or send your ideas to my twitter address: http://twitter.com/roncallari. I answer all of my tweets! Just don't "twitter slap" me any more, as I am digitally bruised from my last fracas with the wild ladies of NKOTB!

Wahlberg on the C's bandwagon Is Donnie Wahlberg psychic? We'll find out as the Celtics make a run for banner 18. Wahlberg's prediction: "First of all, they're gonna beat Orlando in five or six. Then we're gonna hope that K.G. comes back, and even if he does, Cleveland is gonna be really overconfident. . . . We're gonna steal one of the first two in Cleveland, then LeBron's gonna sprain his ankle and the Celtics are gonna beat them in five. . . . Then we gotta see if we can beat the Lakers. We gotta get me back in LA and have me like, uh, take Phil Jackson's hearing aid so he can't coach the Lakers properly. Then we can win the whole series. I think we can do it." the gang in green. Sunday, he hosted a party at the Hard Rock Cafe for local hip‐hop artist Jimmy Marsh, the first artist signed to Wahlberg's Donnie D record label. Guests at the party included fellow New Kid Jordan Knight, UFC pinup Rachelle Leah, who told us she's been friends with Wahlberg since the two met in Vegas a few years ago. Wahlberg finished the good‐will tour by surprising all 63 students at the Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester with tickets to the New Kids on the Block show in June. "There was a lot of screaming. I've had a headache all day," joked Beth Griffin, the school's director of development. Wahlberg was connected to the school through hedge fund hotshot (and Celtics co‐owner) Jim Pallota, an academy donor.

Last weekend was crazy. Here’s some proof Hello blog readers. this past weekend was crazy. friday i went out to coachella and shot. it was surpsingly nice weather, and i got to watch a beatle play (but not shoot photos of him, unfortunately). the shots from coachella or of these bands, in order: the airborne toxic event, the hold steady, the black keys, conor oberst, stage right crowd, biggest jungle gym ever, leonard cohen (amazing), and morrissey. it was a fun day. .

Then Saturday night was totally different. New Kids On The Block at the palladium. it was 30 year old women (and me and josh) screaming their (our) lungs out and singing ‘please don’t go girl’. it was pretty amazing

Just saying hey! get at me tonight my army!!!!!! show is going great. halftime. speak soon. While Jon was smokin' on the bus I was smokin' on stage. The show was killin' as always, but some of the crowd had that laid back Kelowna thing happening. They had a campfire sing along vibe. Joe was smoking cause his fire went out! I sense I just started an epic twitter war with Joe! You might wanna track down the video just after pose off. It's the most Chippendale‐ish I ever felt. Me&Donnie doing syncronized swing. Oy NEVER DOUBT ME!!!!!! I always deliver. Always. Lets talk people..... holla at me. I'm liking this 28K and climbing to heights unseen!!!!! The soldiers are speaking. May the best man win! Jon Knight you can borrow my army tomorow and go for #1 status. Soldiers hit Jon up on the tweet tomorow! Show him the power of ddub army. Tomorow‐ listen to your inner voice. Listen to the universe. It talks to you. But you gotta be ready to receive the message. Trust. ddub Smart move. Way to stick to what you're good at. Stacey‐ I am definitely feeling the acting itch. I'm feeling some TV while also setting my eyes on more Broadway a bit further down the road MsCrys, I am not afraid to tell off a "fan" if it's just bad manners. Sometimes you gotta get real, but you can "check" ppl w/out being mean Mandyva, no one does interactive like we do. There is no wall between us and you so we want to dramatize that on the tour. Oh snap! Correction‐ I wouldn't "tell off" a fan. I'd just be honest and that might hurt them. I wouldn't be mean. Maybe once or twice:) What am I talking about?!! I'm like Ghandi with you guys. A saint among mortals!!! Do you have to "follow" someone to reply directly to them? Someone asked me if the world was ending what would I want to accomplish and what popped in my mind was Broadway. There ya go. My mysoace page is like a dead slug underneath an old musty door matt. I want to originate a role on Bway‐ it's a different journey that way. Thanks for the love on that subject. 1. Pulling into the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. pronounced like, well I have no idea Today‐ I will stay out of my own way. I will understand that it is the journey that counts. You know & you'll see. I want to know what the user name NKOTB looks like. Let's make him like a sport mascot. Any ideas?

Can't wait to share with you guys NKOTB always comes first. My solo stuff will never conflict with what we do. It's something to share and raise money for Komen foundation. Writing emails.I know I said I'd fill you in on my solo set, but I don't want to give it a way BUT it will be cool in more ways than 1. K‐ a hint for solo set‐ its the perfect thing to have on a hot day By the way‐ 25 thousand followers! Thanks, man‐ I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Its either Woodblock‐ which is closer in letters to Woodstock‐ only 2 different. So chill on calling it Blockstock‐ its MY idea! :( but LGT! Fine! Its BlockStock! Sh*t!

Morning, running around with my kids and headed to the beach. XOXO That Tiwsted Helena video is killer! When I was recording my vox I was inspired that way. And our live show‐u can see the similarities. Wow! "Twisted" was always a little darker 4 me than others. Relationships, people, needs, wants‐ we act out in twisted ways. I felt that singing If you ask me Twisted is the dark horse of the CD. Many great jams, much love, but people have a visceral connection to Twisted. Something not twisted was the amazing walk I just took with my son. nothin like him reaching out 4 my hand n' taking me where he wants 2 go. Timberland and James Fountleroy wrote it. Not sure what they meant. Thats the great thing about art. Its whatever YOU want it to mean. Blockstock shout out!

So proud of everyone exercising. Keep it up!!And so everyone knows, I am not a pilot. I am VP of Sales and part owner of Halcyon Jets The new "90210"? These guys are supposed to be juniors in highschool??! They look 25 and they get hotel rooms like it going to McDonalds Admittedly I'm too rigid when it comes to the "realness" of tv‐ it is fantasy I guess, but come on. I like my drama spot on. Get down with "Tudors" on Showtime.

Jordan's sense of humor has a sweet spot‐ very funny, but not obtuse. Brothers don't know everything about eachother. Its Knight not Jonas. Hi MacSupporter. I see you:) Ran my 4 miles and went to the gym. I have some meetings today. Check out www.halcyonjets.com and you can read a little about my day job. And remember everyday you have a choice that no one can take away from you. What kind of attitude are you choosing today? To be clear, when I am home I wake up to the 4 most amazing kids. They love me beyond any way I could describe. So my attitude is blessed.

Thats a user name. Wow...I cant believe it but my own band is getting me hyped on Twitter about the Today Show. I think I'm gonna enter and try to fool Jordan! iPhone just passed a billion apps. I was the billionth. I'm a little slow on the draw at times. These apps are cah‐razy!!! Get at "koi pond" met with a songwriter yesterday...its official i guess‐ where when how and why? We'll see‐ aaahhh the ego shattering writing process. Blaahh !0 songs record.
