Religion Episode of Commons Creates Steady Path For Future Discussion BY LOIC MARCON 2017 “Our curriculum and extracurricular activities have longstanding dedication to the moral development of LickWilmerding students.” This is the mission of the Patterson Ethics Initiative, a group of adults in the LWHS community who convene to discuss issues revolving around ethics and morality. With the help of history teachers Rebecca Hong and Eileen O’Kane, BME teacher Erin Merk, and science teacher Anton Krukowski, the Initiative revamped and re-evaluated their goals. They wanted to focus on building an ethical community. In order to achieve this goal, the Patterson Ethics Initiative decided to work in conjunction with Lick-Wilmerding’s student inclusion chairs Taliah Mancini ’15 and Yanni Velasquez ’15, to try and bridge the gap between students and adults in the community and to create a safe space for discourse about important topics. As a result, Taliah, Yanni, and the Initiative formed Commons, student-only ethics forum meetings. These meetings are student run; the students in charge are the students who are part of the Ethics Council. Students were chosen for the council by the
Patterson Ethics Initiative and later those students sent in applications and nine were chosen. Commons are going to occur every once in a while and will be led by different groups of students in the Ethics Council; they will each lead discussions about a variety of important subjects. The first Commons meeting was held on Friday, February 27, 2015 during tutorial. Led by Raayan Mohtashemi ’17, Kate Chaloemtiarana ’16, and Velazquez, students discussed religion through three guiding questions: 1) For those who are religious or who practice religion, how comfortable do you feel sharing and expressing your beliefs in LWHS’ environment? 2) For those who are not religious or do not practice a religion, in what ways have you encountered religion at LWHS? Did you feel comfortable with these interactions?
3) How can LWHS better host an atmosphere where people of differing religious ideals can express their beliefs comfortably and safely? Approximately 20-30 students attended, representing all four grades. The conversation lasted the entire hour. Commons aims to promote and empower honest, open-minded discussions. The goal of February’s discussion was to resolve misunderstandings. Facilitators highly stress the importance of keeping the conversation going outside of Commons and keeping it on our minds in the real world. Hong speaks about the purpose of Commons. “The hope is that Commons will help foster authentic dialogue in the student and adult community through structured and facilitated discussions on difficult pressing issues. Through greater dialogue, we hope to support a more inclusive community.”

THE event: Find Your Voice On April 25, 2014 LWHS parents, students, alumni, faculty, and friends gathered in the Ehrer Theatre to hear presentations and music by Rebeca Mauleón (parent), Samuel Carl Adams 2004, and Nathan Chan 2011. Each of the three guests gave a 20-minute presentation, and then sat down with LWHS Head
