The Newsletter of Hindu Temple of Central Indiana (HTCI) Fall 2015

Chairman’s Message Dear Friends: I would like to thank and congratulate the entire Hindu community of Central Indiana for your support during the Kumbhabhishekam of our new temple. We can declare, with great pride and joy, that the Maha Kumbhabhishekam was a grand success. Many individuals from our community have donated generously for Maha Kumbhabhishekam ceremony and, more importantly, many volunteers came forward and donated their valuable time and effort to make certain that it was a memorable event. It is not an exaggeration to say that one can complete the pilgrimage of a lifetime by visiting our unique temple. Without your generosity, time, dedication, and devotion, none of this would have been possible. We hope that you will continue to support the temple, whether it is by donating money or by donating time. Now that the temple is complete, it will not just be a place for worship, but an institution that will serve the community in many ways and through many avenues: it will especially support senior citizens and provide assistance programs for Hindu families in crisis, host summer day-camps for youth, and provide continuing education on topics such as Sanskrit, Bhagavad Gita, and Yoga, and eventually have the necessary infrastructure and capacity to have weddings and receptions. To that end, we still have a lot of work to do. In the next few weeks, continued on pg 3

Seeking Nominations for HTCI Executive Committee and Board of Trustees for 2016-2017 term

we will begin to install fences and other security measures to best ensure that all devotees feel to be safe within the temple complex. Furthermore, certain internal projects will be added to protect temple resources (storage warehouse) and provide maximum protection for our community assets. Finally, we look forward to the next stage of our long term plan, the building of an event facility (function hall) that can be used for weddings, sangeets, and other important events in the lives of our members, and for added flexibility for Temple events. Please attend our Temple’s annual dinner on December 5, 2015, at Hyatt hotel, Indianapolis, to learn about more details on these projects.

Dear devotees: The Nominations Committee of Hindu Temple of Central Indiana (HTCI) is seeking your help in the election of office bearers for Executive committee (EC) and Board of Trustees (BOT). Following are the open positions for which nominations are sought: Executive committee (EC): The EC shall be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Temple and also for upholding and promoting the goals and interests of the organization. Finally, on behalf of the temple, its board of trustees, executive committee, Kumbhabhishekam committee chairpersons and co-chairs, I would like to thank you all for your continued support and encouragement throughout our journey of realizing our dream of having a temple in Central Indiana. And a special thanks to all Sthapathis and Shilpis of Silpakala Nilayam (Chennai, India) for their dedication and hard work in executing our dream of having a temple that is architecturally and artistically sublime. The last ten years have been an incredible time in our lives. Not only were we able to create a lasting legacy of our culture for our children, but we were also able to forge many new friendships and, indeed, many of us have grown closer to one another. This temple has given so much to our community, and it was an honor to have had the opportunity to give back to HTCI. For all of you who helped, who contributed time, effort and money, who worked late nights and early mornings and who gave their heart and soul to our cause, Thank You!

10th Annual Hindu Mandir Executives’ Conference: HMEC-2015

Soles for Souls

The 10th Hindu Mandir Executives’ Conference (HMEC) conference was held in Port of Spain, Trinidad, from October 2-4. It was a historical event for this annually held HMEC conference since this time it was organized, for the first time, outside the American mainland. We are very pleased to announce that we had a representation of 6 devotees from Indiana (Chandra Reddy & Padma Gavva, Kumar & Hansa Dave, and Ram & Madhu Bhargava) for this conference. It was a very well organized conference with a fully packed 2 1/2 day program. Although we knew that Indians came to Trinidad and Tobago 170 years back but it felt extremely good to see that they are still upholding the values of Sanatana Dharma. In addition to warm welcome and excellent arrangements, they served authentic Indian food, organized Indian music and dance programs, and conducted Indian devotional Bhajans and Poojas with utmost reverence, creating a serene and uplifting atmosphere. During the early mornings of Saturday and Sunday there were three sessions on Yoga, Meditation and Bhajan - all organized by them.

Isn’t it a great opportunity to fill our souls by giving away simple soles? ‘Soles for Souls’ is a shoe recycling program that encourages individuals to donate slightly worn shoes to those around the world in need. This organization has been an integral part of the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana for the past two years. The people of our community visiting our temple have donated over 2,000 pairs of shoes and thereby helped raise $1,200 for the temple. For the year of 2015, the target goal has been raised to 3,000 pairs of shoes. If you want to be a part of this noble cause, please bring in any gently used shoes, sneakers, sandals, and loafers of any size to HTCI (No flip flops, crocs, or winter boots please). All you need to do is to scavenge through your house to find the shoes that you no longer wear. As long as they are usable, they can be accepted. Don’t worry-shoes are sent to a cleaning facility before being deployed to the needy around the world.

– Update and Reminder

If you want to increase your contribution towards this great cause or would like your children to help raise shoe donations, or for information on shoe pick up and drop off, please reach out to Kamna Gupta (Chetana HTCI Youth Group) at (317)-313-7916 or email kamnagupta3@ gmail.com. If you need more information about this project, please visit http://solesforsoulsindy.weebly.com/.

Why this conference? What are the objectives HMEC? The HMEC is not just a conference of executive leadership of mandirs and various Hindu organizations but a movement to unite Hindus across North America and Caribbean as a strong vibrant group that would help sustain Sanatana Dharma for decades to come. The objective is to nurture Hindu pride and the Hindu way of life by better interaction, connectivity and networking among various Hindu organizations. These conferences will develop a strong bond between generations of Hindus and mandirs through knowledge sharing and education of Hinduism and by integrating them early into mandir executive leadership. The focus of HMEC is on the second /subsequent generations. Mandirs are the key in this focus while Networking, Shraddha and Legacy are the pillars that will sustain and strengthen Hindu Dharma all the way. This year the theme was “Strengthening the Hindu Family”.

Let’s join our efforts together to help raise the goal of 3,000 pairs of shoes this year for the needy, so that they can have a better quality of life. Sharing and caring for each other should be our motto and why not help spread the word to our friends and family? As it is said, hands that serve are holier than the lips that pray. all temples, and even those groups independent of temples, across the continent. Send an email if you are interested to join the network, or just to say hi, at chy.network@gmail.com. The HMEC conferences are usually held during September-October timeframe and the next one is going to be held in Atlanta during 2016. We are extremely elated to announce that HTCI will be hosting the 2017 HMEC conference in Indianapolis. This is an extraordinary opportunity for HTCI and all the Hindu devotees of Central Indiana and to make our mark in the history of these conferences we need to start planning for the organization of HMEC-2017!

The grandeur of HTCI Maha Kumbhabhishekam

sentiment, love, and emotion to all who truly felt God in their hearts. Wasn’t it indeed an exceptional boon to witness the celestial and magnificent Kumbhabhishekam at our Temple amidst numerous Priests chanting divine Mantras, amidst hundreds of volunteers oozing out selfless service and kindness from the depth of their hearts, amidst overflowing devoutness of the devotees and intense prayers of hundreds and thousands of people? We were all indeed blessed to be a part of ‘Hindu Temple of Central Indiana’s Maha Kumbhabhishekam’ which created a divine history in the heart of the Lord thus consecrating the Temple and the temple-like hearts.

By Sharmila Sanka, Member, “Nivedana” Editorial Committee You have earned enough merit if you are inclined to know about the event ‘Maha Kumbhabhishekam.’ You have earned immeasurable merit by attending the heavenly Kumbhabhishekam. The term ‘Kumbhabhishekam’ resonates a divine vibration when heard. When lived, it intensifies the sound even more. Kumbha is the Head or Kalasa or Shikhara or Crown of the Temple and Abhishekham is ritual bathing. Kumbhabhishekam is performed at a particular destined auspicious time concluded by the Priests with the sanctified waters charged with the effect of performing the Vedic rituals encircled by celestial mantras and bathing the Shikhara during which process, the latent power enters the Deity in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. It is at this time that the mere metal or stone Deity transforms itself into a divine latent energy replete with grace, perennial love and blessings. Kumbhabhishekam synergizes the heavenly powers of the Deity thus paving way for the Deities to be worshipped with devotion.

What a grand event led with simplicity and devotion by hundreds of Volunteers, sponsors, Kumbhabhishekam Committee & Temple Board! Thanks is just not sufficient to convey our feel to all those who spent weeks and months to bring this event to fruition. We are all humbly proud to have a full-fledged temple in Indianapolis. It is the law of Kumbhabhishekam that it has to rain on the day of Temple consecration and the rain which drenched the land that bore our temple was just another exemplary miracle of the Lord and the Devathas to express their joy towards our temple Kumbhabhishekam.

Kumbhabhishekam is one of the greatest events of the Temple opening ceremony which cannot be missed by the able minds and bodies. The Lord attends the Kumbhabhishekam Ceremony no matter what part of the world the temple is built. It is a divine and rare event that very few chosen beings are destined to attend. An event like this is attended by the Almighty surrounded by all the Devathas in the Universe. Like air, their presence is not visible to the naked eye but it is certainly felt deep within. The divinity that emanates from their presence is inexplicable. The surroundings become sanctified with their silent footsteps; the environment breathes divinity; the hearts pang for the divine feel and the humanity reaches out to connect to the higher Divinity.

It is so very true that Garuda bird would come right at the time of Kumbhabhishekam carrying His invisible Lord to bless the temple, and the humanity witnessing the grand event. It was heartwarming to see the Garuda bird taking pradakshina all around the Gopura just when the Kumbhabhishekam started. The skill of every inch of the temple in and out and the graceful beauty of each Deity is inexplicable. Thanks to every hand which took part in this event of grandeur. The people leading this grand scale event were simply amazing and it clearly showed how the Lord had given them the strength needed to fulfill this divine goal. They and their generations are truly blessed with this divine opportunity. As long as the temple is used, the merits keep growing in the accounts of their lives for generations to come.

HTCI Gopura Kumbhabhishekam was a grand sight to see, a divine spark to be felt, a meritorious deed to be part of and above all, a historical moment of happiness, pride and anxiety for, it was not mere construction of abode for a human being but was the abode of the Lord of the Universe. It was a moment of

For a tiny good deed to take place, numerous merits have to be deposited in our ‘Life’ account. To be part of temple consecration like ‘Kumbhabhishekam’, how many merits should we all have deposited in our account? How much grace should we have 9

Significance of Ghee lamp in Pooja

atmosphere is experienced even after four hours.

By Dr. Dhananjaya Jog

Veda mantras mention to use ghee specially prepared from the milk of specific cows. For example, there are some expressions in Vedas on ghee prepared from different types of cows like Kapilaghruta samyuktam which signifies the ghee prepared from the kapilavarna dhenu and Prushadajyam -ghee derived from a cow with black and white dots over its body.

Sajyam trivarti samyuktam vahnina yojitam maya Gruhana mangalam dipam tryailokyam timirapah! Bhaktya dipam prayacchami devaya paramatmane Trahi mam narakat ghorat divya jyotir namostute!! -Yajur Veda This mantra from Yajur Veda depicts the significance of a ghee lamp. The ordinary vahni or fire becomes divya jyoti or divine light when it is offered to the Deity. It is capable of protecting the bhakti or devotion from perdition. When the lamp is lit with ghee, Gods’ eyes descent on the lamp. When you touch the lamp, the whole body beams with health and luster. We then become jyoti Swarupas, the embodiments of Light.

So let us pursue the tradition of offering ghee lamp to the Deities. Vedas say “ghrutam vai hiranyam” and this statement implies the significance of ghee in the world of spirituality! ---------------------------------------------------------------

It is like a prayer to the Goddess Durga who is present in all, in the form of jyoti since every one is a jyoti svarupa. When Shakti and jyoti conjoin, there is an enhancement of divya tatva in the devoted individual. One method to reach the Devis and Devathas who are the custodians of the maintenance of the world and social orders is by lighting the lamp with three wicks dipped deep in the ghee. They then remove the suffering and enhance punya or merit. Likewise, the water before Abhishekham is performed to the Deities is mere water and after the ritual, it turns into tirtha, divine water of immeasurable value.

Dr.Dhananjaya Jog is an agricultural scientist working in Bangalore. His quest is to unearth scientific wisdom in the Vedas, especially in the field of Agriculture. He is a student of Vedaadhyayana Kendra with a desire to examine Vedic mantras to gain more knowledge in the field of Agriculture.

The grandeur of HTCI Maha Kumbhabhishekam.... earned from our Lord? How much should we have yearned for the Lord? “God, you have chosen each of us to play a small role in this great deed and let us be instruments in thy divine mission and thank you Lord for making our lives worthy. Living a human life, what more could we yearn for, than to simply offer ourselves at your divine feet for making us part of the Temple Consecration?”

Agni Puran clearly states that only oil or Ghee should be used to light the lamp for pooja and no other substance to be used. According to the Science of spirituality, the lamp with clarified butter is more sattvik or spiritually pure compared to the oil lamp. There is a great difference between the lamps lit with ghee and oil.

Samasta Lokaa Sukhino Bhavantu!!!

Generally the use of oil is more prevalent than that of ghee since the oil lamp kindles longer compared to that of a ghee lamp. Ghee lamp is more capable of attracting the sattvik vibrations present in the atmosphere compared to an oil lamp. The oil lamp can attract the sattvik vibrations spread over a maximum distance of 1 meter while the ghee lamp can attract sattvik vibrations till Swarga Lok (heaven).

“Temple sanctifies a town; taking part in the temple consecration sanctifies a Life.” Sharmila Sanka is an Ex-Secretary and Board of Directors of Hindu Association of Northwest Arkansas. She currently is an Office bearer of Sathya Sai Center, Indianapolis. Sharmila is a free-lance writer who has written hundreds of articles. She works as a Project Management Office Analyst in Indianapolis. She believes in utilizing precious time for divine and noble causes and that one should always strive to balance one’s life between Spirituality & Materialism, no matter what era we live in.

When the oil lamp stops burning, the predominance of raja particles in the atmosphere is enhanced and lasts for half an hour. On the other hand when the ghee lamp stops burning, the impact of sattvikata in the 10
