24 Hour Garage Girls

Manudigital

Headed up by Bristol-based producer and DJ Shosh, 24hr Garage Girls is a growing collective of female garage DJs and devotees. In just a few years, their original concept has grown from raving out of burnt out cars at festivals and raves around the country, to soundclashing against Heartless Crew at Glastonbury’s Shangri-La this year. They’re also just about to drop their first EP and are throwing an intimate Bristol pool party to celebrate – Garage Girls style. Think blinging swimwear, inflatables, water guns and, of course, chest-rattling garage, with Shaun Dean, Mikey B, Ali Monsta and Shosh herself on the decks. The five-track EP, featuring tracks from Shaun Dean, Shosh, Mikey B, Cellardore and King Hydra, will be out for free download in early November. Look out for it on all major online platforms including Juno, Spotify and iTunes. Upcoming shows: 4 November – 24hr Garage Girls Pool Party, secret location

Descended from a family of musicians, French riddim maker, bass player and producer Manudigital first picked up the bass at the age of 13. Driven by his interest in Jamaican culture, style and form, Manu has been involved in the digital reggae music scene for over 15 years. Trained at the American School of Modern Music in Paris, he has worked with major artists like Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and Babylon Circus. Manu later discovered his love for digital equipment while building his own soundsystem, Digital Sound. Since then, he has made various web series (Digital Sessions, Back Inna Days) that took social media by storm and continue to inspire fans worldwide. Earlier this year, Manu collaborated with close friend and DJ legend Joseph Cotton on an album that celebrates the pure tradition of the digital reggae golden era. Since then, they have been touring the album worldwide. Manu is taking a break this month to stop into Bristol’s Trinity Centre to perform as a special guest at the Boom Sound meets Mungo’s Hi Fi show, where you can catch him live on the full Mungo’s soundsystem. Upcoming shows: 4 November – Boom Sound X Mungo’s Hi Fi, Trinity Centre

THOSE QUESTIONS...

THOSE QUESTIONS...

DJ Collective

1. What have you learned today? My housemate told me that there are over 100 names for woodlouse. He calls them cheesy bobs, for instance. There’s even a regional map for it… 2. Favourite track of all time? It changes constantly, that’s impossible. For UK garage, maybeee Right Before My Eyes by N’n’G & Little Nikki (the remix). I just feel like that song has all the best bits of garage combined. And it’s such a simple track. 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? What kind of party winds down at 3am? Only Daniel Bedingfield would get us ‘thru’ a situation like that ;) 4. Who are your top three acts right now? I’m very lucky because Garage Girls enables me to support a lot of artists I personally feel are doing great things right now. Our lineups always reflect that. Lately, I’ve been working a lot with Mikey B and MC Vapour. Shaun Dean and Cellardore are also putting out some great tracks right now… Is that too many?

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Making cakes or writing books.

Producer

1. What have you learned today? I’ve discovered my new MPC and it’s so maaaad!

6. What was the last book you read? No comment….

2. Favourite track of all time? Bob Marley – One Love.

7. Favourite thing on TV? I’m totally crazy about Game of Thrones.

7. Favourite thing on TV? Ricky & Morty and The Great British Bake Off. #GBBO!

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? I would put on Foxy Brown & Spragga Benz – Oh Yeah.

8. Are you afraid of anything? Yes – death!

8. Are you afraid of anything? Failure and SPIDERS.

4. Who are your top three acts right now? Deekline, Major Lazer and Panda Dub.

9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I’ve got a Masters in English and Creative Writing. I wrote a 170-page novel for my thesis about a little girl called Annette.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I would be a fisherman!

6. What was the last book you read? The Child in Time by Ian McEwan.

9. Tell us something people don’t know about you? I’ve got some new projects prepared for 2018 (and a new tour). 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Probably making my best track yet…

10. What are you doing tomorrow? Preparing for my next gig and sending a bunch of emails – boring!

26 // LOCAL TALENT

DBS MUSIC PRESENTS LOCAL TALENT

IDLES

IDLES have long been close to the heart of Bristol’s live scene, so the city’s chest swelled with pride when their 2017 debut album Brutalism received national acclaim and set them up with a headline European tour, not to mention the small matter of being handpicked by Foo Fighters to support them at their London gig in September, and a support slot with The Prodigy in Madrid last month. Routinely labeled as a post-punk band, lead singer Joe Talbot would tell you that they’re not interested in punk – what IDLES are interested in is honesty. ‘Punk is a label that makes it marketable for people. If people don’t know us, which most people don’t, they need some kind of binary – we are not a folk band. ‘I think punk is not an interesting thing anymore. There are political aspects to the album, and there are political aspects to most of the things in our life. I’m definitely not classed as a punk myself. I’m politically minded, but I don’t go to fucking Zara and buy myself a pair of ripped jeans. I’m not interested in labelling myself or living a lifestyle, I’m just being myself. I think Brutalism was for the first time on record us being ourselves.’ Honesty is a motif that prevails throughout everything IDLES do – their live shows, lyrics and studio recordings. The whole of Brutalism was recorded live with a maximum of three takes per track. It’s not touted as a live album and it’s not something easily recognisable on listening, which only speaks to their tightness as a group. ‘We wanted to sound like we do live, because we write for the live experience. The record was a real chore before that. We

were trying to capture our sound for a long time, then our producer Paul Frazer – or Space as he calls himself – decided that if you give yourself a restriction and you don’t have time to time overthink, or breathe, then you hear and you feel the energy more. It does feel a lot more live, and alive, because of that.’ To follow IDLES is to know IDLES, or at least to feel as though you do. On top of deeply personal lyrics (My old man’s a dustman / He’s a sculptor by his trade) and a good chance of exchanging sweat particles with them during a gig, Talbot also personally designs all of their merchandise. The album Brutalism is very ostensibly inspired by the life and death of Talbot’s mother, and so in the most physical way possible, he wanted to symbolise that by having her ashes pressed into 100 vinyl copies of the album, which are available on their online store. ‘It is a very basic, ankle deep, metaphorical gesture. She made that album happen, so I physically put her in the album. We’ve been having discussions about honesty and what honesty is for a long time and, for me, it’s about sacrificing as much as you can to your art. ‘It’s not all of my mum’s ashes, I spread her ashes in Paris a long time ago, but I kept some aside because I knew I wanted to do something creative with them. That’s what she encouraged in me – to be as daring and interesting and honest as possible.’ Although the album was only released in March, it’s been a working progress for years. During the writing of the album, his mum became sick and passed away, an event that wholly shaped the finished record.

‘She brought me up on her own for much of my life. She worked her arse off, she became ill and died. She couldn’t speak – she was disabled since I was 16 – and so we didn’t have discussions about music because I wasn’t a musician before she had a stroke. It was more her being that inspired the album and me.’ The album cover art features a sculpture built by Talbot’s artist father, which is placed shrine-like beneath a portrait of his mother, representing the full circle of his relationship with her.

Yeezus was a massive influence on Brutalism because there was a real bravery to it ‘My dad left my mum when I was six months old, so I thought it would be cool to get my dad involved and come full circle, because I know he had a lot of respect for her. He’s been an amazing father to me – he didn’t abandon me or anything. The point of interest is to make the album as visceral and honest as possible, so my dad couldn’t have been a more appropriate person to get involved with that thing – which is a shrine to my mother and loss and death.’ Despite a year and a half between Brutalism and their last release, IDLES have remained a huge part of the music scene in Bristol and beyond, touring relentlessly and practicing religiously. Initially, IDLES began with Joe and bassist Adam

Devonshire in around 2009. Next, they met lead guitarist Mark Bowen through DJing before he joined the band. Then came Jon Beavis on the drums and finally Lee Keiren on guitar. Eight years on, they are still best friends. ‘It’s very democratic – which is why we’ve taken so long to get to where we are. Democracy takes a lot longer than fascism, does it not? When writing, we’ll come to the group with a part and then we’ll all get involved and write our own parts or write each other’s parts until it’s finished. We try and get the songs finished as quickly as possible so we don’t have time to ponder on it too much. And then we throw them in a set to see if they feel good live. The audiences’ reactions mean a lot to us.’

If there was a time in Bristol where many of the larger stages were reserved for electronic acts, it’s certainly the case no longer. At least some of this shift can be credited to acts like IDLES that have helped close the gap between different musical styles. While the end result could be crudely called guitar music, IDLES embrace the whole sonic spectrum with influences coming from far and wide. In fact, one of the bigger influences on Brutalism was Kanye’s Yeezus. Their 2005 Meat EP received remixes from Slint’s David Pajo and The Vaccines’ Pete Robertson, as well as getting the electronic treatment from alt-J’s Thom Sonny Green and Bristol trio Sly One on a follow up Meta EP.

‘Bristol as a community celebrates each other’s differences, so there was never any tension between genres. We always played with electronic acts and a lot of people like Howling Owl, for example, embrace guitar music and electronic music at the same time. ‘If you look at the lineup for Simple Things, there’s quite a mixed bag of interest. There’s always going to be an air of excitement in Bristol, because people like to stay naive and subversive at the same time, which is cool. ‘Yeezus was a massive influence on Brutalism, because there was a real bravery to it. There were blocks of sound that

After hearing that they’d been shortlisted for the opportunity, the band decided to send Foo Fighters a jigsaw puzzle with an image of bass player Adam in his pants, saying ‘pick IDLES’. They covered up the image on the front and wrote ‘if you build it, they will come.’ And they did. ‘It was a real pleasant surprise, because I was expecting to get chewed up and spat out by this big industry, in an industrial building and feel like a piece of shit. But what actually happened is that it was a really warm reception. Foo Fighters’ fans were really warm and understanding and appreciated that we were just five lads from Bristol.’ On the topic of ‘making it’ as a band, Joe is humble. Which holds them – and fans – in good stead for their next album and the years to come. ‘I think we’ll have made it when we make a really, fucking amazing album’. What that entails? ‘Fuck knows. If I knew, we’d have made it by now. There are things I want to do – I want to play Jools Holland, I want to play on the Park Stage at Glastonbury, I want to tour the world and I want to be a father…

The really important thing for the second album was to not think too much, because when you do, you end up writing for other people

then just cut out and things felt like they were cut and paste together. We were sounding like that already, but we thought that was a bad thing. Then we realised that you can’t want to sound like someone else, you’ve just got to do what you enjoy and are good at. Yeezus came about at the perfect time to show us that bravery is fun. ‘I love all sorts of music. I DJ’d hip hop, garage and grime for a long time. I grew up on hip hop. Lyrics and vocal attack and intonation is a big point of interest when it comes to hip hop for me. I think rappers do their lyrics a lot of justice. And I can’t sing, so that’s kind of convenient for me – I can just shout stuff.’ Joe took the opportunity to showcase some of these mixed influences when he was asked to fill in for Steve Lamacq on his BBC Radio 6 Recommends show this summer, where young South London grime artist DeeJillz shared the hour with Nadine Shah and The KLF. Joe also gave a noticeable nod to the Bristol scene with tracks from St Pierre Snake Invasion, LICE and Taos Humm. ‘I also played a Spectres song but they cut it out! I viewed it as a platform for me to play bands that I know and love, who might not necessarily get played. There’s no point in

me playing songs by artists who are getting played on BBC 6 anyway. ‘I know that the bands are amazing and I knew they’d be loved by listeners, so I thought I’d use that vehicle to push people that I care about. But I wouldn’t do it if they were shit. I genuinely think they’re amazing bands, so why not? It’s what BBC Radio 6 is all about, isn’t it?’

The best part of being in a band is the doing. It’s like a therapy that never gets old It’s hard not to feel excited by the buzz surrounding IDLES. The news that they had been personally chosen by Foo Fighters to support them at their London show felt strangely like an accolade to the people who had supported them since their Welcome EP in 2012.

‘I don’t think people ever make it. If you think you’ve made it, then you’d probably be miserable. Also, if you become obsessed with making it, you’re in the wrong job. The best part of being in a band is the doing. It’s like a therapy that never gets old and it’s really truthful. It’s a beautiful experience most of the time and you get to hang out with people you care about.’ From the outside looking in, at least two of those dreams seem within a few years’ reach. Especially given the fact that their second album will be hitting shelves this spring, while the eyes of the world are already fixed on them. ‘The really important thing for the second album was to not think too much, because when you do, you end up writing for other people. We’re doing pre-production at the moment, but it’s nearly done. It will definitely sound like an IDLES album – we’re not writing any pop songs!’ Asked whether he had any closing words, the lad from Bristol says: ‘I’d like to say hello to my girlfriend Beth, and that I love her – can you put that in?’

GHOSTPOET Obaro Ejimiwe, better known as Ghostpoet, is back with his conscious new album Dark Days and Canapés and a major UK and European tour, which stops in to Bristol’s Marble Factory this November. Recently relocated to the burgeoning creative hub of Margate, Obaro took a break from helping with construction at the site of his new radio station, café and bar to have a chat with us on the phone about the new album and tour. Throughout our conversation, Obaro resists me the whole way, from the notion of a title track (‘that sounds like a rule’), to the existence of trip hop. Though I have little doubt that this questioning nature is what inspires the challenging and moving music that’s, so far, earned him two Mercury Prize nominations. Dark Days and Canapés straight away stirs up emotions on the ideas of privilege, unrest and bystander effect. This is compounded by tracks like Immigrant Boogie, which tells a first person account of a refugee, ‘my two kids and my lovely wife’ on an crowded, sinking boat.

It’s not a political statement, it’s not me putting my flag in the ground Immigrant Boogie, released in April, was the comeback single after his Mercury Prize-nominated 2015 album Shedding Skin and set us up for some heavy listening. However, Ghostpoet is not here to lead us to revolution. Musicians and artists have always commented on present-day society and there’s no question that these are dark days. ‘I don’t like spoon-feeding. I put it out there for people to interpret how they want. I don’t class the album as a sociopolitical album, it’s just a continuation of what I’ve always been doing, which is reflection on social matters. ‘Immigrant Boogie is a reflection of a crisis that we’re all affected by in some shape or form, be it through media exposure or through direct contact through family or friends, and it felt like something I needed to talk about. It’s not a political statement, it’s not me putting my flag in the ground or stating that this is what I’m doing. It was just one of many things I felt I wanted to talk about on the record. ‘In terms of it being the first single, I don’t care about stuff like that. It’s what the label – through discussions with me – thought would be a good one to put out first. That’s as far as it goes in terms of a statement.’ Like all of Ghostpoet’s output, there is an overarching impression of darkness. And, though it’s something that’s always been there, Dark Days and Canapés delves further into a flirtation with deep and dark, gloomy Southern blues. ‘It’s definitely music I listen to a lot, I love the blues. I embrace the rawness of it. With any kind of music or artist that I listen to, I never sit down and try and create a carbon copy, I just allow it to soak into my consciousness. If it comes out in a particular way, it does. It’s definitely in the mix, blues is one of my favourite styles of music so I’m not surprised that it’s in there in some shape or form.’ However, when it comes to an association with the likes of Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead, Obaro wholly rejects the trip hop label he is so often branded with. ‘I’m influenced by all types of music, so I couldn’t pinpoint any of those acts as key influences, they’re in the mix for sure – it’s great music. I love dark music, hence me liking the blues. I like the music that they make because they’re able to create amazing, vast, sonic worlds that are experimental in nature but appeal to a large audience – which is what I’m trying to do long term. So I definitely take that on board and I respect that, but that’s as far as it goes.’ Aside from Ghostpoet’s collaborations with Massive Attack – featuring on their 2016 The Spoils EP and getting Daddy G on his Dark Days and Canapés – track Woe Is Meee – it’s the weighty, explorative soundscapes that parenthesize his music that sees him grouped together with these acts. However, Obaro is quick to point out that this is not an achievement

‘It was the midst of winter, so I was going from an at-the-time quite violent and very moody atmosphere in Margate, to the bustling metropolis of London. Doing that every day was quite interesting. I guess everything you experience or are exposed to affects what you do, be it creatively or otherwise. So I guess it affected me in some shape or form – I can’t put my finger on how.’

limited to those artists falling under the trip hop umbrella. ‘You could say the same thing about Leonard Cohen, you could say PJ Harvey, you could say Nick Cave… I don’t care for genre, I never have and I never will. ‘Don’t get me wrong; being connected to people like Massive Attack and Portishead is an honour. They’re amazing acts that have proved themselves over a long period of time. That’s what I’m trying to do. But I’m trying to be me; I’m not trying to be anyone else. ‘I met Daddy G in a European city somewhere, we were on the same bill for something. He handed me a CD and said, “We’ve

been wanting to work with you, here’s some music. Check it out and if anything takes your fancy, write to it.” So I did and the result was the track in question. It was such an honour to work with them because I’ve been a fan for a very long time, and it was great being able to get Daddy G on my record off the back of starting that relationship. Now thinking back to the trip hop thing – this doesn’t help my cause!’ Although the album was already written before Obaro made the move from London to Margate, during the recording process, he was travelling back and forth to the studio in London every day, which – like any significant change in an artist’s personal life – likely had an impact on the finished record.

Obaro says he made the move to Margate to escape towering house prices in London and find a slower pace within a different creative environment. Now there, he’s in the process of setting up his own cross-genre internet radio station, which will be home to a variety of talk shows as well as creating a new music platform for the area. He launched a crowd funder campaign to get the idea off the ground, and the project is now well underway. ‘There’s been a creative scene in Margate for a long time; it’s only now starting to get a bit more mainstream exposure.

I’m trying to be me; I’m not trying to be anyone else ‘I wanted to do a radio station, and one of the things when I was moving here was that if it wasn’t done by the time I moved down, I’d give it a go. I’ve loved radio for many years, partly because I’m this fan of music and also because I’ve always like the idea of exposing artists to people who listen to my music. ‘So I went about doing it and it’s become something a bit more than I expected. I just wanted a bit of space to start the online radio station, but now I’ve got a space where I can do a café during the day, a bar at night and a radio station within it.’ There will be a soft launch of the radio station before Obaro sets off on his Dark Days and Canapés tour, though he plans to open properly once he’s done touring mid-February and focus on growing the new cultural platform. Bristol is one of the first dates on his tour, where he’ll be bringing a full live band to play with him at Marble Factory. ‘I’ll be coming to Bristol with a full band and we’ll be playing songs from this album and other albums. With everything I do creatively, I put in maximum effort, so we’ll all work as hard as possible and hopefully people enjoy the show.’

32 // THE INFLUENCERS

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH

BOOM SOUND Bristol MC and Boom Sound label manager Luke Gardna – better known as Gardna – is a rapidly growing name on the Bristol music scene. With involvement across so many of the city’s underground channels, Luke is easily one of the hardest working artists currently operating within the city and is looking forward to a bright future, adding more exciting collaborations and projects to his repertoire. After the success of his Gardna X Kreed EP, which came out on Boom Sound last summer, Luke is currently working on an album of his own, whilst just finishing up a jam-packed summer spent touring the country playing blowout shows and festivals with his quickly expanding label. He’s about to put on his biggest Boom Sound show yet: Boom Sound Meets Mungo’s Hi Fi. This month, the full Mungo’s Hi Fi soundsystem and crew will be mashing up the dance at Trinity Centre alongside special guest Manudigital and some of the Boom Sound crew, including Gardna, Kreed, Parly B and more. We caught up on the blower with Luke to have a chat about his new album, The Boom Sound label and smashing Europe, whilst he curled up on the comfort of his own sofa with a posh goats cheese tart.

There’s such a great vibe between us and we’re super into promoting each other’s work Embracing Bristol’s truly independent style of music management, Luke’s label Boom Sound emerged from humble beginnings in Bristol’s own Hamilton House. ‘After a few bad experiences with labels, I decided I’d like to put out music on a label where the artist has full control. Beginning in the Boom Artists office, originally in Hamilton House, we put our heads together and decided to launch our own label. We’re just a big family really.’ The Boom Sound family includes Fat Stash’s Jack Corfield, as well as members of Wonka Vision and Asbo Disco, plus a huge extended family of artists and promoters on the underground dub and reggae scene. ‘Artists are free to come and go as they like, but we’ve got some wicked names down at the moment including Eva Lazurus, Asbo Disco, Parly B and Kreed alongside myself, and we’re taking the crew around the country doing big blowout parties with some amazing headliners like Mungo’s and Gentleman’s Dub Club. It’s all about the family vibe, there’s nothing better than that feeling of killing it at a show with your crew.’ Exceptionally young to be the face of an emerging record label, 22-year-old Luke is managing the label roster with an open, laid back and contemporary approach, firmly embedded with his unbending artist respect, love for the live show and family values. ‘I absolutely love running the label. The feeling of shelling out at a show with your crew, there’s really nothing like it. The parties and Boom Sound takeovers are insane, I just live for the dance and the crowd really goes off. Boom Sound label is a bit of a ‘fam-jam’ if I’m honest. We’re all best mates, it honestly feels just like performing with family. There’s such a great vibe between us and we’re super into promoting each other’s work and helping each other get a foot up, or just collaborating and bouncing off each other.’ Mixing contemporary management style with a respectful nod to vintage sounds, Luke is keen to maintain the elements of original roots music in his production. ‘I really love pressing vinyl. It’s so nice to have a vinyl pressing of your work with some sick artwork done.’ After a packed out summer bouncing between shows and festivals, he finished up the season with a smattering of performances at Bristol’s own Tokyo World, including a guest spot on stage with Gentlemen’s Dub Club for a live preview of their forthcoming track Rude Boy. However, the hard-working artist and label boss will most definitely not be heading into hibernation this winter, with some major plans lined up for the next few months, including his debut album drop.

‘It’s been a pretty crazy summer. I’ve actually just recorded three tunes for the new Gentleman’s Dub Club album, plus we’re gearing up at Boom Sound to do a UK tour with Mungo’s Hi Fi. We’ve got five dates across the country, including a sold out night at Bristol Trinity Centre on 4 November. ‘I’m also really excited to announce that I am working on my first album. It’s just in the early stages at the moment but we’ve planned out the tracks we’re going to use and are now working on getting it down. There’s loads of wicked collaborations coming up on there and I’m so excited to be working with some incredible artists. ‘I just want to focus on making sure more and more people are hearing my music and getting the Gardna name out there. There’s still a lot of work to do and I’m set on promoting my new music to a wider and wider base. It’s all about putting the legwork in. Once the album is done I’ll be doing as many shows, parties and festivals as I can to get my sound out there. The next step will obviously be recording the album, then I’ll

be taking the album around the UK and hopefully smashing Europe!’ Well on his way to carving a place on the forefront of the Bristol live music scene and leading the way for a better future between label management and artists, Luke sheds some light on achieving success for anybody looking to break into the industry: ‘It took me ages to get off the ground and get to somewhere I was happy with what I was putting out on stage. Keep raving, keep working and keep being inspired. It’s really about getting out there and gaining the experience and the inspiration for yourself. Get down to the rave and smash it.’
