Sir Hiss

Milk Teeth

Taking influences from classic grime, dubstep, jungle, garage, Middle Eastern sounds and whatever else takes his fancy, Bristol’s Sir Hiss is quickly establishing himself as one of the most promising young producers on the underground circuit. If you’ve been anywhere near a soundsystem in the last year, you’ve probably heard his outstanding Taj Mahal, which is already being hailed by some as the release of the year. Due for release this March on Infernal Sounds, the vinyl only two-track EP IFSXXX001 includes his equally brilliant Danny Uzi Vert. Pre orders sold out within half an hour, but limited copies will be available at the launch event at Idle Hands on 2 March. Sir Hiss himself will be on the decks, along with Sub Basics and special guest Gemmy.

Female-fronted pop punk from… Stroud. Noisy four-piece Milk Teeth have defied small town expectations. Signing to rock music giants Roadrunner Records last year, they’ve joined the holy ranks of Slipknot, Korn, Killswitch Engage and more. Last year saw the release of two four-track EPs on Roadrunner, Be Nice and Go Away. The former, aptly showcasing their happier, poppier sounds, with Go Away embracing the more aggressive side of their sonic spectrum. Lead vocalist and bassist Becky, guitarists Billy and Chris, and drummer Oli became friends when Becky moved to Stroud as a teen. Now, as well as touring their own headline shows, they’re supporting the likes of Enter Shikari and Lower than Atlantis around the globe. Becky answers a few questions for us before Milk Teeth visit Exchange this month

THOSE QUESTIONS...

THOSE QUESTIONS...

1. What have you learned today? Answering questions about yourself is a lot harder than it seems.

6. What was the last book you read? Haven’t read a book in years, I’m more of an online article kind of guy.

1. What have you learned today? Hotel soap bars don’t make great shampoo. My hair looks like spaghetti.

2. Favourite track of all time? Can’t pin it down to one as I go through so much music depending on how I’m feeling, but here are a few that stick out: Dr. S. Gachet – Remember The Roller, J Dilla – Life, Wiley – Igloo (Devils Mix), Maurice – This Is Acid and Roy Ayers – Everybody Loves the Sunshine.

7. Favourite thing on TV? Vikings – only thing I watch.

2. Favourite track of all time? Really? There’s no one singular track but one of them is The Background by Third Eye Blind.

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Jakes & Joker – 3K Lane. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Really feeling everything Headland is sending me, he’s a very serious dubstep producer. Blay Vision just dropped his second instrumental album and I can’t get enough of it and, finally, Commodo… Nuff said.

8. Are you afraid of anything? Dead MCs and clanging mixes. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I used to make house back in the day. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Recording a couple of guestmixes and hopefully going to Pho to devour some Vietnamese food.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I want to say photography, but more realistically I would be at home playing video games.

soundcloud.com/sirhissbristol // facebook.com/SirHissBristol // twitter.com/SirHissBristol

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? The Killers – Mr Brightside. There ain’t nobody who can fight that singalong. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? The Distillers because I hear they’re making a comeback and I would sell an organ to see them live. Bad Luck has this song Grow Up, which is a jam and hasn’t left my head for almost two weeks. Our driver out here played this band Lucero the other day, which I’m really into. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? No idea. When I have more money I’m going to invest in a decent DSLR. I love travelling and I hike a lot outdoors when I’m home, so that’s on the list. I wouldn’t mind working down our local rock climbing centre. I’m also into fitness, but I think being an instructor would ruin the enjoyment. There’s a company called Refugee Kitchen that do amazing work, which I would also love to be a part of. I just like being outdoors – if someone wants to pay me to hike all over the world, that would be great.

6. What was the last book you read? HTML and CSS web coding. Not the whole thing, I’m revisiting it after my one-year stint at uni. I always found it interesting and it’s another skill to have. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Recently got into True Blood. The opening titles alone are rad. 8. Are you afraid of anything? Failure mostly. I hold myself up to a high expectation. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I can make a three-leaf clover with my tongue. It’s a useless talent. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? We are currently on tour in America with Enter Shikari and Single Mothers. The shows are great! I’m currently in Florida, so probably chilling in a t-shirt and having a wander.

32 // LOCAL TALENT

DBS MUSIC PRESENTS LOCAL TALENT

GOAN DOGS

Charismatic, upbeat and unique, Goan Dogs are the bouncy, Bristolian band with a cult following stirring in the city and the rest of the UK. Guitar led and pop-rock infused, Goan Dogs mash up vintage sounds with crisp, upbeat tempos to fuse together an inventive blend of psychedelic desert rock. Hailing from Bristol, the boys have become heroes locally and beyond, finding a fan in Elbow’s Guy Garvey, who has described them as ‘Bristol’s finest’ and given them precious airtime on his BBC Radio 6 show. Following their recent single release, their four-track EP Roll the Dice is due for release on vinyl and digital platforms on 30 March. They’re also closing the month with a series of headline shows including Shoreditch’s Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen and Thekla.

We’re all old friends from primary school The five-piece group boasts a tirade of talent with Luke St Leger on lead vocals and guitar, alongside Theo Mackie on guitar, Bill Sherwood on bass, Dan Lane on the kit and Sam Kynan Powell on trumpet, guitar and other miscellaneous instruments. We’re looking forward to a big year from our

LOCAL TALENT // 33

favourite Bristol pooches, so we grabbed the boys for a quick chat about the rise of Goan Dogs.

We used to do more of the desertrock, Americana-inspired guitar sound but we’re using more synths and psyche-pop instrumentation Goan Dogs was born out of school friendships and mutual interests in music. ‘We’re all old friends from primary school’, Luke tells us.

‘We’ve been together as a band for a while,’ says Theo, ‘but have really been focusing on moving forward in our musical careers for the last two years. We’re all Bristol based lads so we’ve really felt the support of the music scene in the city and are so grateful for the opportunities we’ve been given.’ Joking amongst themselves the boys reminisced about their early days playing shows around the city. ‘Bristol has a really thriving music scene’ says Dan. ‘It always has and it’s only growing bigger and stronger as the years go on. It’s a great place to start out as a new band; there is a tonne of support and some really great venues to play, so the gigs are great fun. ‘An old favourite haunt of ours back in the day was The Croft. Back then we had an accordion (played by drummer Dan) and did some really wacky stuff on stage. There were weird props involved and somebody had an umbrella on stage. We

like to think we’ve refined our sound a little since then.’ With major inspirations in Tame Impala, Mac DeMarco, Michael Macdonald, Radiohead and Soft Hair, Goan Dogs have intricately crafted an original, impossibly catchy sound. ‘At the moment we’re trying psyche infused pop-rock. It’s definitely organic and original to us and it feels right. We used to do more of the desert-rock, Americana-inspired guitar sound but we’re using more synths and psyche-pop instrumentation in our music now’ Theo explains. The boys have been working hard over the last year crafting forthcoming EP Roll The Dice, which they will be launching this month with a string of gigs, finishing at Thekla on 31 March, supported by the talented Harvey Causon. ‘We’re really excited to get back to Thekla for our headline show’ says Luke. ‘We’re pulling out all the stops for this one – it should be a blowout. There are going to be lots of props, inflatable dice and Sam will probably take his trousers off!’ Released last month, Goan Dog’s new single Passing Through gives us a taste of what’s to come from the new EP. Accompanied by a much-anticipated video release, Theo explains the concept behind the track: ‘Passing Through is all about making sure that life doesn’t just pass you by. The message behind the song is that you can just go through the motions of life, or roll the dice and take a chance to do things differently. We’re super excited about the single release and the video. We work really hard to make our videos interesting and exciting to watch.’ With big hopes and a promising future emerging for Goan Dogs, it looks likely that they’ll smash through into the big leagues any day. This year could see them take off to new heights and they certainly have the aspirations to support the dream. Alongside plans to play a few of the major festivals and tour their new EP, they’ve already set their sights on writing their debut album. ‘Our biggest goal now is to write, record and release an album that we love and are proud of’ says Dan. ‘After that it’ll be to go on tour and play as many shows as possible! Our four-track EP is a stepping stone and we hope to be playing at some of the big festivals this summer!’ Watch this space, Goan Dogs are a sure thing.

34 // PREVIEW

PREVIEW

DJANGO DJANGO

Ever since their 2012 eponymous debut, London-based quartet Django Django have been making waves in the music industry due to their unique ability to blend countless genres into one dense, electrifying sound. At their best, they flirt with an impressive array of influences ranging from 60s psych-rock to 80s pop, classical to post-dubstep and 90s indie to dancehall. Their Mercury-nominated debut propelled the foursome to the top of festival bills including Glastonbury and Fuji Rock, a far cry from their humble beginnings recording in Dave’s bedroom. The album reached number 33 on the UK album charts in its first week of release, with their 2015 follow up Born Under Saturn peaking at number 15. Brimming with sonic ambition, bassist Jim Dixon, drummer and producer David Maclean, synth operator Tommy Grace and frontman Vincent Neff released their hotly anticipated third album Marble Skies in January this year. An accompanying major UK and European album tour stops in to Bristol’s SWX this month. Ahead of the show, bassist Jim took some time out from his busy schedule to chat to Nitelife about their new album and upcoming tour, as well as what’s in store for 2018. Taking success in their stride, the band went from DIY bedroom recording to completing their second record in a professional studio. Though Jim tells us they felt this cost them some creative autonomy, so the band were eager to regain full control on Marble Skies and return to their self sufficient roots. ‘This time round, having our own studio in Tottenham meant that we had more time to work on tracks. We were able to spend a full day on just a single track and then put it to one side, coming back to it a couple of weeks later. It meant that

Fiona-Garden

PREVIEW // 35

we weren’t chasing our tails constantly trying to cram three songs into five days of recording.’ Marble Skies is unmistakably Django with its sizzling synths, beatful basslines and mixed up sound, though you can tell that the group had a lot more fun with its creative process. The album feels a lot lighter than the last, with its galloping pop songs, playful explosions of sing-along choruses and harpsichord-styled keys. ‘I think that’s a result of us going back to our own space’, explains Jim. ‘It’s filled with our own instruments like Tommy’s synths, percussion, drums, guitars and stuff. It just freed us up a little and we felt more comfortable with the process, so we were able to enjoy it more.’ Naturally, the pop-psychedelic art rockers did learn a lot from working with a skilled studio engineer and have been able to adapt their original working method to create a more succinct album than its predecessor, and clearly their best work to date. ‘There are elements that we took from recording the second record. For example, we had no idea how to mic up drums and amps and stuff like that. But certainly having our own space and being able to come and go when we please meant that it was a happier working environment and it allowed us to be more playful with the songs.’

Working with Metronomy’s Anna Prior on these early sessions really influenced the music As a band, Django Django are impossible to pigeonhole due to their constant toying with genre-bending sounds, ranging from techno, synth-pop, dancehall and rockabilly, to name a few. On paper this might sound like an almighty headache, yet this London-based quartet manage to amalgamate all of these different sounds into a coherent whole with the help of Dave and Tommy – the glue that holds these disparate influences and styles together. ‘We rely on Dave’s style of producing and Tommy to help hold us all together. Dave is a massive DJ and record collector and having him produce the records kind of galvanises all our songs and all those different styles.’ Each track on Marble Skies seamlessly blends into the next like an unspoilt DJ set and this adventurous, genre-blurring approach to music has certainly served the foursome well. However, aspects of traditional rock found in their earlier works are becoming increasingly hard to decipher due to the quartet’s thirst to keep innovating. Guitars rarely take the lead on this new album as the band experiment more with electronics and synthesised sounds.

‘Working with Metronomy’s Anna Prior on these early sessions really influenced the music, as her drumming style definitely pushed a few tracks in certain directions that we wouldn’t necessarily have gone down. I think Tommy was a lot more involved in the initial writing process as well, so a lot of the tracks are really synth driven.’ With four strong creative forces in the band, Jim explains how the band go about incorporating all four of their personalities into a single track: ‘We usually start by writing out a really short narrative or loose storyline, almost like a film synopsis. Or it might just be a lyric that gives us a sense of what the song should be about. Having that synopsis allows us to pin all four of our focuses on one idea and we are able to write lyrics individually and bring them back to the studio where we can patch them together. It seems to work for us – it did take a little while to get used to writing lyrics as a four, but we’ve gotten used to the process.’ Having all met at Edinburgh College of Art, there’s no doubting this talented bunch have creative bones in their bodies and they’re not afraid to start from absolutely nothing, with no preconceptions. By not forcing their tracks into a particular genre or style and not focusing too much on how they think they should sound, the band allow themselves a freedom few artists get to enjoy. ‘We don’t worry too much about whether a certain song is a Django song’, explains Jim. ‘If it sounds good, generally we’ll run with it. As soon as you start thinking about it and try to shape a certain style, you start to second-guess what you should be doing. For all of us, that just doesn’t seem natural.’ The London-based foursome continue to come up with sounds that are unpredictable and playful, as they strive to create new ways of expressing themselves rather than tying themselves down to what’s currently popular. Their philosophy of just going with it and seeing where their sound takes them is akin to the escapist and psychedelic tones in their music, influenced by the band’s desire to remove themselves from the everyday. ‘I’ve always loved going to galleries and museums and just immersing myself in an alien world completely. Writing music in a studio in North London can be pretty grey and miserable at times, so it’s nice to try and remove yourself from that. ‘We all read a lot and watch a lot of films,’ Jim continues, ‘music can completely transport you and affect your mood. Like film, music can pick you up and take you on a journey. We’ve enjoyed forgetting our everyday lives and using music as a vehicle to go somewhere else.’ The foursome are currently working on their live show and promise to deliver brand new eye-popping and crowdpleasing visual spectacles. Jim informs us that they’re completely pulling their set apart and attempting to totally

shake things up in true Django style. ‘Hopefully we’ll have Rebecca Taylor doing a few shows with us’, says Jim. ‘It will be great having her about. As and when we have the chance to get people involved we’ll be doing that. It’s still in the development process, but it’s exciting for us all.’ With their second record Born Under Saturn, Jim admits they found a lot of the tracks difficult to play live. Individual parts were recorded separately, so they rarely came together as a band on stage. This time around, a different studio process has enabled the band to record their songs collectively, resulting in a smoother transition from the studio to the stage.

We’ve enjoyed forgetting our everyday lives and using music as a vehicle to go somewhere else ‘It’s a bit of a backward way of doing things but we generally take the recorded version apart when it comes to playing it live and build it back up. There are so many elements in the tracks on the album, so we have to strip out all the unnecessary parts. ‘It’s almost like two separate processes, meaning that a lot of the times we play the songs live they are different to the recorded versions, which keeps it exciting for us but also for people who come and see us play.’ When asked what else they’ve got in the pipeline, Jim assures us that Django Django always have stuff bubbling away in the background and that they’re looking to put something out later in the year. ‘Hopefully over the summer we’ll keep the momentum going, as we really want to do as many one-off gigs as we can. Most of the ideas that we’ve got at the moment are in their early stages, but over the next couple of months we’ll be putting stuff together and announcing it.’ So, keep an ear to the ground for further updates, crazy beats and melodies from this boundary-pushing quartet. Which far-off land will their music be leading them to this time?

36 // THE INFLUENCERS

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH

MANDI DEXTROUS Make way for Jungletek pioneer Mandidexterous and her energetic 190bpm techno and jungle infused sounds. This DJ and producer has been in the music game for over ten years, and after moving to Bristol four years ago, Mandidexterous AKA Mandi, has firmly planted her roots within Bristol’s eclectic music community. Aside from touring across the UK presenting her ribcagerattling, techno and jungle charged noise, Mandidexterous runs Bristol-based Amen4Tekno Records and is the founder of the ever-expanding sell-out nights, Kiss My Kick Drum. Openly identifying as a transgender woman, this DJ, label boss and promoter abolishes the notion of gender in everyday life and in her music, letting her music break boundaries and conquer the dance floor.

I’m very picky about who I want on the label, so finding new artists can be quite hard label. In the beginning I was more interested in artists who had a similar sound to mine, but it was a difficult task finding anyone. I’m very picky about who I want on the label, so finding new artists can be quite hard. But every now and again, someone will come along and blow me out of the water.

In this month’s Influencers, Nitelife sits down with Mandidexterous, who is now celebrating 10 years as the figurehead of the jungletek movement – an amalgamation of the hardest jungle and techno sounds.

On top of Mandi’s growing musical successes, she is also praised by many for becoming an icon for transgender musicians within the EDM community. However, as we work toward seeing past gender in the music industry, Mandi says that she prefers to remain neutral when it comes to putting her name lineups.

After finding herself entrenched within the techno community, Mandi took the next step by developing a platform for herself and friends to promote and showcase their sounds. In 2011 Amen4Tekno Records was born, featuring a roster of Bristol based DJs, including Fortress, Matt:Scratch, C3B, T-Menace and more.

‘Personally, I don’t like gender and I don’t really feel I fit either side. I’m openly transgender and I’m seen as a female transgender person, but for me I’ve battled with my mental state with it for a long time. I’m very open with it and very supportive of people who have issues or gender dysphoria, so I’m very sympathetic to that and happy to talk to anyone about it.

‘I decided I wanted to create a way to put my music out to the public. It started off as just an internet label on SoundCloud, but then I got some branding together and started becoming interested in other artists who I felt would fit the label. The first artist I signed to the label was Matt:Scratch, who bizarrely enough is someone I live with now.

There’s a lot of student, counter and underground culture within the city. Bristol is like one big sponge that absorbs all walks of life

The Bristol music scene is renowned for its beautifully diverse range of subcultures, sounds and musical practices that welcomes variety to the city with open arms. Mandi reflects on why she fell in love with the new music capital of the UK:

‘It’s mad because there wasn’t really a scene for my music where I originally lived. Even when I played at squat parties in London, I felt people appreciated it, but not like they do here in Bristol. Whenever I go on tour and people ask me about Bristol, I always say it’s the rave capital of the UK, because in my eyes after touring all over the country, Bristol is where it’s at.’

‘And even though I fell in love with Hardtek, the sound wasn’t giving me exactly what I craved. I wanted to hear all the big heavy jungle tunes, but remixed into techno in a really fun, energetic way. With the help from a few friends teaching me the basics on Ableton, I basically merged the two genres together and nurtured the sound into what people know today as jungletek.’

‘It’s actually been quite hard finding the right artists for the

‘We started out with the intention of making an EP, but then T-Menace got involved and the next thing we knew we were making a full album. For me, I really wanted to push the album because I felt I had let myself down with my first solo album, so I wanted to do something special with the boys. The final product is a mixture of collabs and solo tracks from us all. Since its release we’ve had a really positive response.’

‘The thing I love most about Bristol and find most inspiring is just how open minded and susceptible the ravers are. There’s a lot of student, counter and underground culture within the city. Bristol is like one big sponge that absorbs all walks of life.

‘I wouldn’t exactly call myself the pioneer of Jungletek. I pioneer in my particular sound I suppose, but Jungletek was around before I started making it. It’s not really widely known and it’s kind of the off spin from the European hardtek, fast techno sound. I was always a jungle and drum and bass DJ when I was younger, but then I discovered techno and hardtek.

‘Ever since then it has all just snowballed. I started my own series of events called Kiss My Kick Drums, which started out as just an annual thing, but because tickets kept selling out we started to put on more and more events.

recognise now that I rushed that album completely. I felt a bit bad about it afterwards and wanted to work on something new and C3B, whose work is such an inspiration, wanted to collaborate on a project.

‘As far as I go in the music scene, it’s never been a problem for me. I’ve always just done what I thought was right and done it with confidence. I don’t care if people judge me for it, or say bad things to me because of it.

‘There is a nice handful of us now and we all work very closely together. When we go out and there’s a few of us on the lineup, we really like to represent. We’ve got the sound, t-shirts, banners and a vibe about us that promoters find quite interesting. With our branding and unique sound, people know what they’re going to get from us and they know it’s going to be big.’ At the start of the year, Mandidexterous and members of the Amen4Tekno crew C3B and T-Menace released their first collaborative album Please Keep Your Sound System Pumping. ‘I actually spent a very rushed three months at the start of last year putting together my own album. The thing is, I’ve recently learnt how to be more patient with things, so I

‘I have always been very neutral when it comes to putting my gender in front of anything. I’d never put something like ‘transgender DJ’ next to my name on a lineup, for example. I sometimes find I’m put on all female lineups, which is nice in some ways, but in many ways I find it irritating because these ‘all female’ lineups probably won’t be in the main room – they’ll be in Room 2 or they’ll put a male headliner amongst it. I don’t think the female aspect needs to be involved. We’re all artists doing something we enjoy and that’s all that should count, not our gender.’
