Red Bull Culture Clash returns to Bristol this month for a battle of genres. Grime, dancehall, dubstep and drum and bass go head-to-head with four crews battling for the biggest cheer from the audience in the form of Elijah and Skilliam’s Butterz Sound, Stylo G’s Warning Sound, DJ Die’s Gutterfunk and Pinch’s Tectonic. It’s only right that Bristol legend Dynamite MC should host the event, having been such a major part of creating the city’s sound. He won a Mobo, Q and Mercury Award with Roni Size and Reprazent, and is no stranger to the vibrant musical output of its residents, commenting: ‘It’s an honour and a privilege to host what will be a mighty showdown’. The event ties in perfectly with the recent release of a 30-track deluxe edition of his multi-genre album World of Dynamite. Australian born, London-based songwriter and performer Josef Salvat heads to Bristol this month as part of a huge European tour for his new album Night Swim. His cover of Rihanna’s hit, Diamonds was what first caught the attention of the world, but it was his own brand of upbeat-yet-melancholic electronic pop and songwriting aptitude that kept it. After releasing his debut In Your Prime EP, which includes the cover, just eighteen months ago, he’s already racked up multiple sold out European tours and a French #1 with his breakthrough track, Open Season (which now has over 5 million combined views). JAYDROP
Bristol’s Jay Jennings, better known as DJ and producer Jaydrop, has had an incredible few years. His early productions in dubstep caught the attention of genre pioneer Plastician, who started giving him support on his Rinse FM show and went on to include two of his tracks on his volume of Dubstep Allstars in 2013. Jaydrop’s more recent experiments in drum and bass found him signed to Doc Scott’s influential 31 Recordings, releasing his True Sound EP on the label late last year. Today you can catch Jaydrop on any Bristol bass lineup worth talking about, plus a never-ending list of gigs and festivals further afield. He’s a resident DJ for local giants, The Blast and has recently shared a stage with the likes of Shy FX, Andy C, Goldie, David Rodigan, Congo Natty and Loefah. This month alone, he’ll play the Outlook Festival launch party at Fabric, three gigs at Motion including The Blast presents DJ EZ, which sold out in just a few hours, before jetting off to play Annie Mac’s Lost and Found festival in Malta. Despite the obvious buzz around this exciting young producer, he remains humble and determined. We met up with the talented 24-year-old for a pint to find out what’s next in store…
How did you get the attention of Plastician when you first started out, and what happened next? I started listening to Plastician on the back end of 2007 during his Radio 1 residency and then followed him when he moved back to Rinse FM. This was well before I had even started thinking about making my own music. So when that time eventually came, it was amazing that he was the first person to be supporting my music on air and in his DJ sets too. Chris [Plastician] was regularly playing my music on his Rinse show, which boosted my profile dramatically. There was talk of him starting a new label to run alongside Terrorhythm, but it happened to be at a time when dubstep started to ‘die’, so that folded. But he still featured two of my tracks on his Dubstep Allstars album, which came out on Tempa. Earlier this year you were running between gigs with Swindle and LTJ Bukem on the same night. Why do you think you’re so in demand as a warm up for all these huge acts? More than often I’ll have two shows in a night, so will be darting around the city. I enjoy doing it because it generally means I get to play two separate types of music that I love. Being a resident for The Blast means I’ve got to support some of my favourite DJs and producers and off the back off that,
I’ve got a lot of bookings for other nights as well. Although it’s fun playing at the busier peaks of a night, when you’re warming up you get to be more creative, which is always a plus.
Drum and bass has taken over for me in the past few years. We’re looking forward to seeing you support EZ and special guest Benga this month. That must be a pretty exciting booking for you? Of course, EZ is the DJ’s DJ. I’m glad that he’s had a massive resurgence in the past few years too. I’ve got quite a few old sets of his and they’re all amazing, especially when they include MC Viper. As for Benga, I’m very excited to see what’s in store for him in 2016. Hopefully he can bring something new to the table. That night sold out in a few hours – it’s going to be special. Dubstep or drum and bass (or both)? Predominantly drum and bass has taken over for me in

the past few years. All of my recent releases have been of 160bpm+ but dubstep was my first love in electronic music. I would almost sway to enjoying myself out at a dubstep night more than anything. What’s been the reaction to your True Sound EP? My debut EP on 31 Recordings was very well received, from what I can tell. I still cannot believe I’ve signed music to one of the most respected labels that has been there since the start of the scene. And to go with that, the support I’ve had from artists that have inspired me and I look up to has been motivating. Are there any other genres you’re interested in working in, or having been experimenting with? Whenever I sit down to create something, I always mess around with different speeds and genres. You can come across something in one genre and then take that to another, sometimes this works well – sometimes! You always look like you’re having such a good time behind the decks. Can you describe how it feels when you’re in front of a live crowd? For somebody who has been going out since the age of about
16/17, I know how much fun you can have in the crowd. I’ve always wanted to be able to give back to the people who are paying to come and see you DJ. When you get people banging on the walls or the booth and people calling for reloads you know you’re doing something right. You’re fairly prolific with your guest mixes and live sets. How much time do you spend in the studio? Guest mixes are a great way to expand your audience. Most recently I was on Youngsta’s Rinse FM show and I also recorded one for the M.I.B Crew who are based in Malta. Production wise, I try to sit down most evenings or whenever I have spare time. It’s having to find time to fit it around the day job, annoyingly. How did you first get into DJing and producing? I bought my first set of decks in about ‘07/‘08 off a good friend of mine for an absolute bargain (cheers Cam!) and never looked back. I started off playing at under-18 nights in Bath alongside my mate, Troy Gunner and Occular. This moved onto playing at a night called Instinct run by my now housemate, who used to sneak me in the back door because I wasn’t old enough! I became a resident there and started to set my sights on Bristol. In about 2010, I started playing
in Bristol at Champion Sound and a few other nights. It was around this time I started producing, it just felt like the natural progression. What’s been the biggest moment of your career so far? Obviously releasing on not just 31 Recordings but all of the labels that have supported me. Gig wise, playing Fabric main room in 2013 was a highlight. What’s next in the pipeline? I’m currently working on some new music, mostly collaborative, with Perverse, SubMarine and Crypticz to name a few. HIGHRISE BRISTOL LAUNCH FEAT. THE MOUSE OUTFIT
Last month, Bristol heartily welcomed the launch of HighRise Bristol, a new, soon to be huge, night representing underground bass music and soundsystem culture, with 12 successful sessions in Leeds already behind them. The impressive line up brought a pleasing concoction of sounds and respected artists to all four rooms of Lakota, including headliners The Mouse Outfit and Gorgon Sound, plus Prince Fatty feat. Horseman, Kenny Ken B2B with Uncle Dugs and Commix. Headlining the main room was Mancunian production team and collaborative live hip hop band, The Mouse Outfit. Consisting of its three core members, Chini, Pitch and Defty, The Mouse Outfit set out to perfect the live hip hop sound with an ever-expanding line up of musicians and local Manchester MCs, including regulars Sparkz, Dr Syntax, Fox, and Truthos Mufasa to name a few. Taking over the stage on this occasion was the full live band, with MCs Sparks, Truthos Mufasa and Black Josh. Playing songs from their new album Step Steadier, as well as old favourites from Escape Music including Sit Back and Who Gwan Test, The Mouse Outfit had the crowd singing lyrics back at them from across the dance floor, balconies and stairwells. It’s yet another sign of things to come for the band, who are fast gaining recognition in the UK and further afield. Their highly anticipated second album, Step Steadier found its way in ear shot across the pond at ABC News and reached Number
9 in their Top 50 Albums of 2015. But despite the rapid growth of success, The Mouse Outfit continue to follow the independent route of self-released and self-promoted music, making listeners respect the Manchester-based collective even more. Nitelife caught up with Defty from The Mouse Outfit before the show to find out more about the success behind the collective and how they transform their unique sound from studio to stage.
The Mouse Outfit continue to follow the independent route of selfreleased and self-promoted music How did The Mouse Outfit firstly come to form? Me and Chini met at an audition for a Neo Soul band in Manchester, but decided we wanted to make something with a bit more energy, so started making music under the name The Mouse Outfit. At the time, Chini was teaching at a music college in Manchester and Pitch (producer) and Adisa (drummer) were both students at the college. After performing together a few times at a hip hop jam in Manchester called ‘In The Loop’, we started doing shows together and working on studio tracks.
Since The Mouse Outfit formed, other bands have followed in a similar style of fusing together MCs with a live band format. Did you start this collaboration with the intention to change the face of live hip hop? We just started with the intention of putting together the most exciting live show that we could. For us, that was going to involve MCs, horns and heavy drums. One of the tracks that influenced these early intentions was called Can’t Help Myself, by TY and the New Zealand funk band The Bamboos. Our sound has changed now and will continue to do so, but it was certainly a track that pushed us in this direction. It seems Mouse Outfit are constantly touring whilst continuing to release incredible bangers, including last year’s album Step Steadier. How do you balance studio life and tour life? This is a tricky one! Quite a few of us have other part time jobs teaching music too. We need to take as many gigs as possible so that this can be our full time job, but the more time we’re on the road the less time we have to make tracks! Sparkz seems to be able to make music anywhere though - I’m pretty sure he made most of his last three EPs on the road between venues. How do you get The Mouse Outfit’s music from studio to stage with a live band? Even though there are live elements on our tracks, we rarely get the band in the studio to make music. It’s generally done by either Pitch or Chini who’ll work alone or with an individual musician, to create patterns or layering ideas. The band then

has a job of interpreting those ideas, but sometimes it’s hard to recreate the studio sound, so that means our live and studio sounds can be quite different. It’s not necessarily a bad thing though because most hip hop shows sound quite similar to the studio sound, but when you come to our shows you’re getting something you really can’t hear at home. We’ve heard you sometimes try a new track with a couple of rappers until you find one that works. What do you listen out for when you’re choosing an MC to collaborate with? Sometimes one rapper’s vocal tone or lyrical content will sit particularly well with the instruments and vibe of that track. Sometimes certain rappers will buzz off different types of beats and be more likely to have that moment of creative inspiration. This technique of trying beats with different vocalists was something we probably did more with the first album when we were working with the rappers for the first time. Now we can hear a beat and get a pretty quick idea of who we want on the track. The Mouse Outfit features a huge number of MCs. Do you get much of an opportunity to have all these MCs on stage at once for a live show? Our Manchester shows almost always involve Sparkz, Dr Syntax, Truthos Mufasa, Fox, Black Josh and Dubbul O. We can’t take all the rappers to all the shows due to costs and logistics, but on our last UK tour our usual trio wasn’t always available, so we were able to experiment with our line-up
a little more. This allowed us to keep the set fresh and play tracks around the country that our fans don’t usually get to see. People often draw similarities between Bristol and your home city Manchester. How do you think Bristol and Manchester’s music culture compare to each other? Bristol certainly feels like our second home. Both cities have a deep heritage in electronic music and are famous for partying hard. We hope we’re continuing that tradition of combining various genres and cultures to create something new. Finally, what’s in the pipelines for The Mouse Outfit this 2016? We’re hoping to put out an EP after the summer and a new album next year, but before that we’ll be releasing an album of remixes from producers like Dub Phizix, Tall Black Guy and Werkha who’ll be putting a spin on some of our older tracks. We’ve also got a European tour in March and a pretty packed summer of festivals, ending the year with another UK tour. We just want to perform as much as possible and continue to expand.

KANO MARBLE FACTORY, 18 MARCH
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few years, you’ve probably noticed that grime has enjoyed a massive resurgence, with artists like Stormzy, Wiley and Skepta lingering near the top of the UK charts. The triumphant return of original grime MC, Kano is far from opportunistic, however. His new album Made in the Manor has been three years in the making and it’s potentially his most exciting record to date... Talking to Nitelife ahead of his Bristol show this month, Kano says, ‘It’s definitely the realest album I’ve ever made. It’s really close to my heart. It’s about me, and I think it shows musically and lyrically.’ Kano’s first album Home Sweet Home is regarded as one of grime’s finest records, earning him a Mobo award for Best Newcomer in 2005. Even 11 years on, many of the tracks feel like they could have been made yesterday.
‘I hadn’t listened to that record for years, until I went on a ten year celebration tour of it last year, and yeah, it doesn’t feel dated to me either, so I understand that.
Jay Z has praised Kano as his stand out UK lyricist ‘I was a kid, man. But I was definitely trying to push the genre forward, push boundaries and experiment a bit, and gladly it’s lasted the test of time. It’s nice to know that it still feels fresh!’ In the decade since Home Sweet Home, Kano hasn’t been sitting on the sidelines. He’s been consistently putting out music and collaborating with important artists, but he’s done so in a way that refuses to compromise his musical integrity, setting up
his own label Bigger Picture Music to allow him to avoid the politics of big label bosses and gain full creative control. He also made his first foray into acting as the lead in Channel 4’s Top Boy. And let’s not forget that Jay Z praised Kano as his standout UK lyricist in 2010. Kano remains at the helm of his creative direction, despite being signed once again to giants Warner on their Parlophone imprint, and has in fact self-directed his last two music videos for new tracks Hail and New Banger – the latter follows Kano around his house as he throws a party for all his friends and family, coming in at a very modest price tag for a music video of £550. ‘We bought quite a few drinks! That was really my house and that was really my friends and family. That was my mum I went to the butchers with to buy the meat.’ If you think that’s impressive, his video for Hail only cost £35,
PREVIEW // 29 which he shot with grime media director and pioneer, Risky Roadz. ‘I was looking through a few treatments of music videos and I’ve never really loved the process. I thought, why not stop complaining about it and just do it myself? We ended up getting a camera and shooting ourselves literally over a few days. ‘People really took to it. There was a time when music videos were about being glossy and having all these nice cars in the background. People call it ‘aspirational’, but it’s not, it’s silly. No one can identify with that. So this video really resonated with fans.’ So what does the grime king think of the state of UK music today? Hail features the ominous rhyme, “They say grime’s not popping like it was back then / Rap’s not honest like it was back then…” ‘A couple of years ago [when I made that track], I felt like we were in a place where people were reaching for commercial success and it was coming across. And when we started this, we weren’t really caring about that stuff. But I think we’ve gone a back to just doing us and not caring, and having a strong British identity. In a lot of ways, our uniqueness is our selling point at the moment. ‘I think the state of UK music today is really good. Right now people are out there making great music. It feels like people are making the music they want to make rather than the music that record labels are pushing them to make. People are keeping it real and getting a lot of attention, which is good for me. I think we’re in a nice place. It just feels like there’s a great energy right now. There’s a lot of new people coming through. It just feels good.’ With Made in the Manor due for release this month, anticipation among fans is high. The album features collaborations with Wiley, Giggs and JME, but Kano also teams up once again with Damon Albarn.
I don’t want to call this album a grime album, it wouldn’t be a true representation The pair have worked together before on Kano’s London Town track Feel Free and Kano features together with Bashy on Gorillaz album Plastic Beach, which led to a world tour with Gorillaz and a ridiculous host of other special guests including Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, and MF Doom, who took turns covering the rap on seminal hit, Clint Eastwood. ‘[Damon] is someone that I respect a lot musically, and he’s my mate as well. When we get in the studio, he’s so sick. I can never second-guess him. He always surprises me with what he likes and what he might bring to the table. We’re different, but I think that’s what makes it interesting us collaborating. ‘For Made in the Manor, he did a little bit on a song for me called Deep Blues. He sang a bit and played a bit and done some production on there.’ The new album drops on 4th March and there’s no doubt that the songs we’ve heard so far are genre-pushing, particularly the rock-tinged tinged Hail, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from Kano. ‘I don’t want to call this album a grime album, it wouldn’t be a true representation. It just comes from me. I feel with my music, you can hear my influences. And grime is a massive influence of mine. But dancehall is as well, and obviously hip hop is. ‘People say Home Sweet Home is a grime classic, but I don’t think that’s a grime album, really. I don’t see it that way. At the time when I was doing Typical Me with an electric guitar, people were like, “how can you be doing that? That’s not this, or that…” Then years later it becomes this thing that people hold in high regard. ‘I’ve always tried to push boundaries, but stay true to what I grew up listening to, which is grime, garage, jungle, dancehall and hip hop. And I feel my music is a blend of it all.’

TODD WILLS Todd Wills Age: 41 Job title: Head of programme at Colston Hall
‘The Lantern is our way of saying, “look we know what we’re doing,” says Colston Hall programmer Todd Wills. ‘It’s our way of saying, as a venue, as programmers, as a cultural organisation, we know what’s out there and we know what’s going on. The Lantern is our calling card.’ Todd is the head of programme at Colston Hall, which means he’s ultimately responsible for booking all the artists in the Main Hall, The Lantern and Foyer space. We have met him on a Wednesday afternoon to find him still shattered from BBC’s 6 Music Festival the weekend before, where Colston Hall was one of the main venues, hosting Underworld, Laura Marling, John Grant and Roni Size, to name a few… ‘6 Music Festival was amazing, although we didn’t have a lot to do with it. It was more of a BBC thing. We discussed some of the programme with them, but I think they had an understanding of what they wanted it to look like. ‘The biggest thing we’ve done so far was the Goldie and Heritage Orchestra show down at Harbourside and the after party here. That was great, hopefully we’ll be able to do something like that again.
It’s a small industry, so the more people you get to know, the more doors open. ‘What often happens with venues of this size is that national promoters will come in and hire your venue. So quite a lot of the time you don’t have access to the artists you want, so if I want to book Primal Scream (and I always want to book Primal Scream), I won’t get to because they will always work with a regional promoter. But we try and make those good nights happen here. ‘The remaining percent of the business is where we look for acts. With Colston Hall, we mainly work with promoters, but with The Lantern – that’s 80 percent us.’ Before moving as a programmer back to Bristol three and a half years ago, Todd worked as programmer in London, including for the famous Vortex Jazz Club. ‘Some of that was really experimental - throwing marbles at urinals sort of stuff! ‘After university I worked in the usual jobs you do when you leave university, trying to sustain myself with doing music, but I was nowhere near! I made music and put records out, but nobody was buying them... ‘And then I started getting into working in arts funding, bits and pieces here and there, or working with musicians to do an arts council funding application. I did this big project linking British jazz musicians with West African drummers. ‘Eventually I quit the day job and it all just snowballed from there. It’s quite a small industry, so the more people you get to know, the more doors open.’ Todd speaks modestly for a man in charge of the programming for the biggest venue in one of the UK’s top musical cities. The Colston Hall and Lantern has events almost every night, across every thinkable genre, as well as festivals and exhibitions. ‘It’s a lot of work. A typical day is trying to fit all my emails, in between the meetings and then worrying about how I’m going to do the work from the meetings after the meetings – it’s really not as glamorous as it sounds! ‘I didn’t get the job here in the first instance. I applied on the off chance because I had moved back here, but I was still working in London. I didn’t even get an interview but I wrote to the chief exec and she gave me some positive feedback.
‘Then, I don’t how long it was, but they contacted me to say that someone had dropped out of the interview process and did I want to come in the next day. So I had to write a presentation on the train back from London, which was a bit unfair, I thought. I came in, did the interview and got the job! ‘What Bristol is great for, far from the way it is in London (I was lucky to have a programming career in London!), is that Bristol feels like a city where you can still do something. ‘If you are interested in this kind of work, it’s not hard to start a night here, it’s not hard to get people to notice that you started a night here, and to make it work. It’s possible that we’re getting saturated with the size of the city and the amount of nights here, but if what you’re doing is good then people will go.
‘I hear there are courses now in doing it and maybe that is a good way to get into it, but you can’t replace good old experience. Just find a venue, or a like-minded person that can help you run a night at a venue, and just get it out there. ‘And like I said, the industry is quite small – you’ll be amazed at how quickly you get to know everyone here. It’s the best feeling when you have an amazing sold out night that everybody loves.’
