The Stranglers
Seven-strong, horn blaring, bass thumping, foot stomping Bristol crew First Degree Burns have been blending their unique mash up of genres for 17 years. Today, their sound is an ear-pleasing mix of hip hop, ska and reggae – a blend they call ‘skip hop’ – and consists of Sam (vocals/clarinet), Jalon (vocals), Ben (drums), George (bass), Mike (guitar), Piers (sax) and Nathan (trombone). Known across the UK and Europe for their knock out live energetic shows and infectious sounds, if you’ve have yet to see First Degree Burns live, make sure you add them to your list this summer. September will mark 42 years in the business for The Stranglers. Initially based in The Jackpot, an off-licence run by their drummer Jet Black; the band quickly developed a pub-rock following and were soon swooped into the punk movement, opening for both Patti Smith and The Ramones on their British tours. With hit singles Peaches, Something Better Change and No More Heroes, The Stranglers quickly forged a place for themselves in punk rock history. Former Toy Dolls bassist Baz Warne was invited to join The Stranglers in 2001 as guitarist and co-lead vocalist. We asked him those famous questions…. GARDNA
Over the past few years, Bristol MC and producer Gardna has been quietly helping shape the underground music in the city with his independent label, club nights and live dubwise PAs.
During this time, as well as creating his own music he also set up and runs independent record label, Boom Sound, with Bristol promoters Adam Asbo Disco, Jack Fat Stash and James Wonkavision.
But recently, MC Gardna AKA Luke Gardna, jumped into the limelight with the release of the music video for his new banger ‘Sunday’, in which he co-stars with Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, who plays the badass Arya Stark.
“Working together in the Boom Office on Stokes Croft inspired us to bring together artists who were working on the Boom Artists agency. We started pairing acts together to collaborate and make music and the final product was sounding wicked. I mean, too good to give away... We wanted to release it ourselves, so we did!
The new track, created with Bristol producer Kreed, only dropped officially on 30 May, but has already become a summer anthem for many of us, with the video hitting 40,000 views on YouTube in the month before release. “I’m still gassed about the video now,” says Gardna. “Chris Lucas did such a great job on it. The full EP includes a ‘Monday’ Dub and Hi5Ghost Remix and Dub. The vinyl will get here eventually – they take forever.” This isn’t the first time one of his tracks has gotten this level of attention. Gardna’s 2013 ‘Festival Track’ became the unofficial anthem of Boomtown Fair and was championed on Radio 1 by Rob da Bank. The 21-year-old MC grew up in Midsomer Norton and moved into central Bristol to study music industry management at BIMM, where he’s currently completing his final year.
“Boom Sound is an independent record label promoting underground soundsystem based music worldwide. Running a label is new to me and it’s been well fun so far. My favourite part of running the label is putting on label showcases - we always have a party!” Growing up in Bristol had a huge influence on him musically, he says. With its rich heritage of soundsystem culture, it’s no coincidence that’s the sound he champions now – with his own music and the Boom Sound label. “100% it’s because I grew up in Bristol. For my sixteenth birthday my older brother gave me his old passport, which gave me access to all the raves in Bristol. I was about my beats and my bass music before that happened, but that’s when it all started to change.”
It seems that living near Bristol has had a similar effect on Maisie Williams, who also grew up in Midsomer Norton and went to school with Gardna. “We often cross paths at raves! And she’s been at a fair few of my gigs over the years - so I’d say she’s a fan! “We’d been toying with the idea of doing a video together for a while. I just needed to come up with the right idea and right tune for it. When ‘Sunday’ was finished and I nailed the idea for the video, I just hit her up and it happened. Just like that.” The track samples Johnny Osbourne’s ‘Going To Church’, which inspired the idea for the music video, which is shot in the gothic church on Nelson Street. The video sees a demon-faced Maisie wreak havoc on the church, pouring Bacardis and ‘possessing’ Gardna. “It was super easy working with her. Very natural. I mean, it took 12 hours to shoot the video and rolling into hour 11 she was still ready to roll. We got some of the best shots in the video in the last 15 minutes. Stamina!” With so much under his belt already, it’s hard to believe Gardna is just wrapping up his final year at BIMM. At 21, he’s already achieved plenty of bucket list moments... “Doing the sunset set on Arcadia at Glastonbury

after Rodigan was pretty special. There’s no way I’m forgetting that day! “ The shows over the past month or so have been pretty special too. I’ve done a few live PAs, some wicked Mr Benn live and direct shows alongside Eva Lazaras, and some big room hosting sets with Ed Solo and Deekline, and Born on Road. Love to the crews! “I’m currently on my 22-date summer tour. It spreads over four months with loads of festivals, a few international outings and a couple more club nights in the build up. I’m mostly looking forward to Glastonbury, Eden, Boomtown, Shambala and Outlook. I’ll also be releasing more music; an EP with Kreed and other tunes with Mr. Benn, Mystic State, Jinx in Dub, Aries and more.”

The Full Moon’s Attic bar served up some of Bristol’s favourite homegrown talent along with London’s finest this May, featuring Dub Boy, Eva Lazarus and godfather of UK hip hop – Rodney P. It might’ve been that awkward point in the month with funds starting to look a little low and pay day lurking a bit too far away, but that didn’t stop fans taking to The Attic to appreciate the soulful vocals of Lazarus and witness one of the UK’s most pioneering MCs. The Attic Bar was overflowing when we made our way through the swarming venue to check out Bristol’s very own reggae, drum n bass and soul sweetheart Eva Lazarus. The singer’s set was as vibrant as her fluorescent lime green PVC skirt, with her distinct fierce vocals and heavy beats delivered by Chris Munky vibrating through the dancefloor. By the end of her set, Eva Lazarus had once again succeeded to whip up the Bristol crowd into a frenzy. By the time Rodney P took to the stage, the crowd were ready to dive straight back onto the dancefloor, to enjoy the raw lyrics and positive vibes from one of the founders
of UK hip hop. Opening with his Sound Dimensioninspired and all-round anthem The Nice Up, Rodney P jumped straight into the classic with ease, reminding everyone why this veteran is recognised as one of the UK’s most influential MCs. DJ Shepdog accompanied Rodney P, bringing a constant supply of beats, whilst Da Riddim Killa MC continued to deliver silver tongued verses, simultaneously pouring Jack Daniels into the mouths of the lucky few at the front of the stage. Rodney P visited a variation of material both old and new, including his latest ska-tinged anthem Holes in the Building feat. DJ Die and Indigo Kid, before closing with Dub Pistols collaboration Mucky Weekend and a whole feast of DnB-inspired material, gluing the crowd to the dancefloor. But before all of this, Nitelife headed down to Rodney P’s hotel room, to get to know the MC, find out about the history of London Posse and hear his opinion on the everchanging UK hip hop scene...
London Posse and their 1990 debut album Gangster Chronicles was where it all started for Rodney P, but unlike other hip hop albums coming out of the UK at that time, London Posse created a new foundation and blue print for future MCs to follow, by being the first to MC in their native accents - ultimately changing the face of UK hip hop. “We wanted to do something new and different. It was after our trip to NYC we realised how stupid it sounds to rap in a fake American accent, and that’s when we decided we wanted to bring something different to the table.” “At the time, we thought we were the best rappers in the UK! We thought everyone should follow our lead and years later they did. It’s not as if we started rapping UK and everyone started rapping UK. It took 10 years, but we eventually won that argument. “To be honest, I recognise my position and I recognise we ushered in a new era, but I think that era would’ve come eventually anyway, we were just the ones that set it off.” Over the years Rodney P has maintained a strong sense of
PREVIEW // 25 identity by sticking to his unique style, whilst continually growing as an artist and entertainer. “I’ve had my style for a long time, I do my Rodney P thing; my hip hop, reggae ‘walk like me, talk like me’ thing and that’s what I do. I have no intention of changing it. “I consider life like a learning curve. You will change within your journey, but it’s a natural progression. There aren’t any jagged edges. If you looked at my entire career you’ll see it all makes sense. Hip hop and reggae, that’s just what I do.” The London based MC has never been shy to collaborate with a whole host of artists. Touring with the likes of Dub Pistols, Ghost Writerz and most recently DJ Die and Indigo Kid, Rodney P thrives working with a variety of artists by following one simple rule: “The only question you ever need to ask yourself is ‘when I leave the studio, do I still like the tune?’ That’s it. If the answer is yes then that’s good enough. It just has to be good music that you like.” If you’ve ever been to a Rodney P show before, you’ll know this artist likes to take centre stage and put on a high energy set, often with a bottle of Jack Daniels in one hand and mic in the other. But in order to deliver these verses in style, the MC embraces the energy and vibrations passed back to him from the crowd. “I often do hip hop shows for people who know me, so I’m winning because they already know my music. But sometimes the best shows are when people don’t know me at all, because then you have to work them. “It’s a different kind of energy entirely. But all the love is there still. I’m not coming out on stage all aggressive. Instead I just want to win the crowd over.” Considered a veteran of UK hip hop, Rodney P’s opinions on the history and developments of the music scene are always sought after. Recognising the climate of our current hip hop culture here in the UK, Rodney P is positive the attitude towards the music genre is making steps in the right direction. “The thing I like about UK hip hop at the moment is that it’s all merging into one. For a long time there were lots of different scenes within the UK. There was your backpackwearing High Focus scene, your trap people and various scenes within scenes, and that became quite troublesome and not very healthy. For a long time people boxed themselves into one genre, whereas in the generation I grew up in, we listened to all that shit. But now I think it’s finally getting back to how it used to be and that’s a much healthier place to be.” With the grime scene in the UK making a soaring comeback and the likes of Skepta reaching across the pond to America, we had to hear Rodney P’s opinion on the rise of the homegrown music scene. “When I was in America recently I found out Americans find it strange how grime kids think they’re doing something completely different to hip hop. The way they see it in America, grime is just British hip hop and that’s exactly what I think too. “It might be quite controversial for a traditional hip hop MC to say, but I think grime is the most pure version of UK hip hop that I’ve ever heard. You hear all the genres the UK has produced; from drum and bass, garage and bassline, and these are all the things that have made grime. Plus, the music sounds like a concrete housing estate! “Hip hop is about taking in the elements around you, but a lot of grime kids don’t recognise that, yet American artists do.” Judging from his to-do list, it sounds like Rodney P has been busy working on plenty to keep followers entertained in the upcoming months… “I’ve just come back from America where I’ve been filming a new hip hop documentary and meeting some of the biggest names in hip hop, like Chuck D, Russell Simmons and Rakim, to name a few. It’s all about how the world looks through the lens of hip hop and looking at its image. Not the media’s image of rap, but the true hip hop culture. We’re looking at education, sexuality, power and various topics that we’ve focused really deeply on. That will be coming to BBC Four this September. I’m also in the process of making another documentary called Under the Influence and that’ll be looking at the journey of the UK voice and accent as MCs. “I’ve also got an album coming out on Tru Thoughts that’s nearly finished, so keep your eyes out for that one too.”

MALA ALL NIGHT LONG 17 JUNE, TRINITY CENTRE
Dubstep pioneer, DMZ founder and legitimate legend Mala returns to his favourite Bristol venue this month, this time taking the reigns solo for an all-night long session: Yellow Brick Roadz: Mala All Night Long. “Yellow Brick Roadz is a place where people can come and feel free to be themselves,” he tells Nitelife. “That goes for the artists playing and the audience bringing the vibe. DJs get longer sets, getting the chance to take their time and play in ways they don’t get always get a chance to. Bristol is one of best cities in UK to play in. Trinity is a wonderful venue and RC1 Sound System is so powerful. Perfect combination.” One of the things that Mala is known for is the exclusivity of his dubplates. If you want to listen to Mala, you need to come and see him. You won’t hear a radio edit of a new track two weeks after he’s finished it. You might hear a track at a Mala show and it could be months or years before you hear it again, which, for true fans, is all part of his charm. “It’s what I grew up with - early 90s pirate radio stations and jungle raves. You would have to listen to a certain DJ to hear certain tunes being played. Grooverider had his
exclusives. Brockie has his exclusives. Roni Size had his exclusives. Soundsystem culture has always been about dubplates and exclusives. It’s exciting to go to someone and not know what you’re gonna get. I think the audience appreciate coming out and being challenged by the music they are listening to. It’s part of my culture.”
Bristol is one of best cities in the UK to play in. Trinity is a wonderful venue and RC1 Sound System is so powerful. Mala’s fiercely anticipated new album Mirrors drops this month and is a follow up to his 2014 Mala in Cuba record; this time taking inspiration from the music and culture of Peru, where he spent a month absorbing a local mixture of folk sounds, from local Afro-Peruvian percussionists and
grassroots tap dancers to music from the mountains and Andean sopranos. And judging from the sample track he’s released on Bandcamp, Kotos, featuring native panpipe group Asociacion Juvenil Puno, this is something really worth getting excited about. “It took two years to make. It was finished and mastered last year and finally it’s out this coming June! You can check out malamirrors.com for samples and more info.” The full album drops on 24 June with a limited edition vinyl release of 500 restricted to one copy per customer. This is a significant move on his part, since it became common practice to see Mala records fetching absurd prices online (at one time, his seminal Anti-War Dub was going for £200 on Discogs). “When we released Mala in Cuba, people were buying several copies. The record sold out and a few days later it started appearing on Discogs at ridiculous prices. I’m not going to knock anyone’s hustle but I understand by doing it this way those who really want the record can actually get it at the asking price. The same was happening with

my Return II Space record too. Anti-War Dub is different… Somehow this piece captured a moment in time.” It’s impossible to talk to Mala without asking about the resurgence of true dubstep (we’re not talking Skream’s La Roux mix circa 2010) over the past few years. Whilst remaining discernably underground, dub step is becoming more and more accessible to music lovers of all disciplines. “I play at plenty of places that have nothing to with dubstep. This has been a huge role within my career since day one. But back then we didn’t have the platform. We just had FWD and Rinse FM. Then we started DMZ. We had to create our space within the industry to get the music out there. “I was lucky enough many, many years ago to play at Deep Space, which is Francois K’s Monday night session in NYC. I have played there six times or so now. FK is known for playing house music. I have been the only so called ‘dubstep artist’ to play at techno festivals alongside people like Theo Parrish. I also play alongside legends like Goldie or David Rodigan. I’ve also played on the same lineups as foundation sound systems sounds like Aba Shanti, Jah Shaka, Iration Steppas and Channel One. I love the fact that I’ve never just played at dubstep events. “This is something that’s important to me. It’s expanded my ears and mind. I have met so many amazing people as a result of being open-minded to all people, places and
music styles. No matter who my audience is, I appreciate that they are there. It’s for that reason alone I will play every show as if it was my first and my last. I love the music I play, so I’m going in.” With already a decade of influential producing under his belt, and much more on the horizon it seems, the latter half of 2016 brings another milestone for Mala. Along with the release his new album, September brings the 10 year anniversary celebration of his dubstep label Deep Medi. “Deep Medi is 10 this year and the label is almost at 100 releases too. We have been doing Deep Medi events for a few years now and this year we have taken on bigger venues to create our intimate vibes, like Bristol’s Motion and London’s iconic Fabric, and the shows and feedback have been so positive. “We celebrate our 10 years at Outlook Festival this year, which I’m looking forward to. So this year, like every year, is a celebration of music and people and a coming together of the two - bringing a goodness that we all get to feel and be a part of. Giving thanks!”

This month, Nitelife talks to bar manager and co-owner of The Old Bookshop, Ben Gatt, who has played a big role in transforming the previously struggling North Street into a vibrant, lively and generally cool place to be when the weekend hits.
Old Bookshop. I really dislike this word. What’s quirky to one person may not be to another. Who made you the judge of quirky? For myself and many others, The Old Bookshop has heart - it has a soul. What does a typical work day / night look like for you? A typical day is actually fairly mundane. There’s always chores. Cleaning, moving barrels, moving furniture, staff rotas, emails… I tend to work from morning to night and I’ve been doing this for four years. I have no issue with working hard but I’ve found that to keep on going I need an hour to myself at around 4 or 5pm so I can pop upstairs and have a shower and get dressed up. Then start work over again.
What were you doing before you took over The Old Bookshop? I was working as a kitchen and bathroom fitter/ plumber/ general builder in South Wales. This is how I’ve managed to open my own place, as I had the skills to physically create The Old Bookshop. I’ve always had a keen interest in the bar and music industry. I used to DJ most Saturday nights in Wales and help a friend set up PA rigs in TJs in Newport. When I moved to Bristol, I lived in a rotten old boat outside the M Shed, packed in my job and did bar work in Thekla, The Hatchet and Bierkeller for a year probably the most enjoyable, carefree year I’ve ever had.
What advice would you have for anyone wanting to get into a similar role? In my opinion, it depends on how successful you want your business to be. If you want something that stands out, is unique and of a high standard, you are going to have to work extremely hard. The job isn’t as glamorous as you may think. It actually just comes down to hard work. The responsibility for your business is yours alone. I think in the service industry you have to BE the job and everything that goes along with it. I also feel it’s not good to sit back and think you’ve made it just because you’ve opened a venue. It’s good to improve and move forward, not treating your place like your personal playground. No-one wants to see the owner lying in his pants on the floor in a puddle of vomit!
When did you decide to start doing live music? It was always my intention from the start to put on live music, so from day one really. The position and shape of the stage and what equipment we would put in was one of our planning priorities during the refurbishment of the building. I even brought in a drum kit and made a mock-up of the stage. As a very small venue it was crucial to get this right.
Could you describe Bookshop as a venue in a nutshell? Almost daily I hear the word ‘quirky’ used to describe The
What is the best thing about your job in general? From the start I had a clear vision for the bar and I’ve not deviated from this. My vision has always been to create an environment that I would want to be in, as both a customer and a business owner. I feel I’ve been able to achieve this, so that’s the answer to the question. I’m pretty intolerant of ‘laddish’ behaviour, rowdy groups, stag nights, you get the idea. There’s no snobbery behind this. For myself and many others, if I go out to socialise, listen to music, eat and drink, I want to be able to relax in a warm, open-minded, friendly environment. I’ve got no time for small-minded arseholes. I’ve come up with a saying: “you find your tribe.” Any drawbacks? Yes, quite a few. It’s very difficult to have a 9-5 lifestyle. Very often you’re working when friends are not, such as evenings and weekends. I’m naturally quite a private person and I have struggled with becoming the face of the business. Maybe dressing like a 1920s oddball doesn’t help…
Bookshop was one of the first venues to kick-start the regeneration of North Street – was this your intention? No. I had no idea how things would turn out. We took on the premises because it was the only place we could afford. It had a flat above and most of the planning was already existing, i.e. to sell alcohol and food, and put on live music. There wasn’t much happening on lower North Street when we first opened up; in fact the general attitude from friends was that it might not work out as other businesses in the area had failed. However, I was fairly confident as I felt I was offering something unique. I could see the potential for a bar like The Old Bookshop on North Street.
Can you tell us a bit about your music program? You get some pretty interesting acts in! Generally I book stuff that I like. I’ve managed to get in some great bands that are used to playing bigger venues. The likes of Sheelanagig, Beth Rowley, Phil King, 45s, Marcus Bonfanti, Scarlet Rascal… the list goes on. Our whole concept was to SQUEEZE great bands into a small space to create a super intimate experience. I think I’ve managed to achieve this for a few simple reasons that sometimes get overlooked. In my opinion, we have one of the best PA set ups and sound quality in a small venue in Bristol. The bands can hear themselves well, all my equipment is well kept and of a professional quality. I’m a bit of a sound geek so I take the sound aspect very seriously. I do my best to be a good host and make the band feel welcome and relaxed, often giving them free drinks. If the band is happy and they’re enjoying their sound, it will come across to the audience and make for a better show.
after people within the industry. Typically, if someone comes in who I know works in a bar, runs a venue, is a promotor, etc. I’ll always do my best to look after them as much as I can. A free drink here and there. This is often reciprocated when I visit other venues and bars, but I think it’s important never to expect any perks.
Are you involved in the Bristol nightlife scene in any other way? Other than visiting some fine drinking and music establishments in Bristol, I’ve not really had the time to get involved with much. However, currently I’m pursuing some nights playing vinyl and looking to get involved with some new projects. Maybe ask me again in a year.
Evenings are always quite fun, but sometimes stressful. I describe myself as the oil that keeps the wheels turning. I can tell you who is sat on what table at any time, what they’re eating, what they’re drinking... Always looking out for potential problems, and making sure customers and staff are happy. On weekends I usually operate the sound desk, which I always enjoy. I kind of like the traditional approach to running a bar - I see myself as the host. At the end of the day, it’s called the service industry for a reason - we’re here to offer a service. What are some of the perks of being a bar owner? I must admit that this question makes me feel uncomfortable. I don’t think it’s a good approach going into an industry with a view to the perks you’ll get. However, I have been able to meet some interesting people who I wouldn’t have crossed paths with if it wasn’t for this job. I firmly believe in looking
Do you have any more plans for expansion / new nights / more music events? There’s quite a lot in the pipeline. By August, we should have a creative art space and coffee shop open in the harbour area. From there I plan to do classes, workshops, evening events, theatre, and music. Building work is underway so hopefully it should be done on schedule. Last year, we acquired the lead boat, Grey Gull, from the Leigh Woods installation by Luke Jerram. We’ve got some great plans for the boat. It’s going to be fitted out for events and trailer-mounted so we can take it to festivals and parties, and hopefully get a location for it in central Bristol. Everyone likes drinking on a boat! Now that we’re four years into The Old Bookshop, I feel like I’ve got the time and energy to get involved in some new projects and the Bristol scene.
