Most widely known as the bassist in Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, and Dwarves, Nick Oliveri is seen as a hero amongst the heavy rock crowd, with more than just a few bands to his name. Acting as a contrast to the other styles he’s so well known for, he applies this same punk attitude to the classic singersongwriter formula, resulting in a raw, cathartic live experience. Red Rooster Moving Company is the product of a two-year long metamorphosis that began with ten friends in a van entertaining themselves while traveling long stretches of road across the Southern United States. Since then, the band has seen shifts in musical styles and band names, and has enjoyed a constantly rotating cast of talented musicians hailing from both Eugene and Portland. Most often seen playing on a front porch or around a campfire, RRMCo creates danceable, foot-stomping, good-timing music, drawing heavily on blues, jazz, ragtime and country tunes from the early 1900s.

Bristol DJ Mike Shawe is a self-confessed vinyl obsessive, sharing his love of funk and soul with the people of Bristol for nearly 30 years, holding down residencies at many of our favourite Bristol venues.

In 2005, after a chance meeting over the counter of Bangbang Records, Mike struck up a DJ partnership with Bristol DJ Alex Seal through a mutual passion for vinyl digging and vintage porn, and thus Hot Buttered Soul was born. Playing regularly in Bristol, Hot Buttered Soul spin 60s, 70s and 80s; deep funk, crossover, modern soul, afro, boogie, and everything in between. With an eye for the dance floor they handpick the best sounds from across the spectrum of black music. Spinning only original vintage vinyl 45s for that ‘authentic’ sound and feel. Now a decade on, their Hot Buttered Soul events go from strength to strength, showcasing their open-minded music policy of across the board funky-soulful sounds, both old and new.

Now one of the best-known jungle and drum and bass DJs of all time, Kenny Ken starting DJing in ’89. Inspired by the early warehouse parties, he left his job as a ticket collector on the London Underground to play house and techno. By the early 90s, Jungle music had taken hold and Kenny Ken was soon playing in superclubs like Telepathy and Helter Skelter. Today he still holds the title of the Jungle Soundclash champion after the legendary 1994 grand finale at the Roller Express. As his name became known, he started DJing for ravers’ pirate radio station Centreforce, later going on to host Radio One’s Friday night show Radio One in the Jungle - the first show to give jungle music a platform on mainstream radio. Although primarily a DJ, Kenny Ken began producing his own tracks including massive hit ‘Everyman’, eventually setting up his own labels Mix & Blen and Planet Funk Recordings. Continuing to do his bit for the scene, Kenny Ken teams up with reborn Bristol jungle label Ruffneck Ting for a big night at The Attic Bar, with DJ Dazee, Jinx, Vytol, and Habitat, to name a few.

REWIND // BEST OF LAST MONTH
URBFEST LAKOTA: FLOWDAN MC Flowdan is one of the longest serving grime MCs. Real name Mark Viera, Flowdan is known for his dark and dirty, bass-heavy beats. He started out as a drum and bass MC, before joining garage music collective, Pay as You Go Cartel with his childhood friend, grime MC and producer Wiley. The pair went on to form Roll Deep together – a group whose members have seen a ridiculous level of success as solo artists, including: Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder, Wiley, and Skepta. Now, it looks like Flowdan is next to blow. His collaborations with producer The Bug have helped bring Flowdan back to the public’s attention, but last year’s Serious Business EP gave us a real taste of what he is capable of on his own. So we were very excited to hear that he’s working on a new album due out in the New Year with production from Komodo, Kahn, Swindle, Mazro and The Bug, Flowdan was one of the headliners at Lakota’s all day festival last month, Urbfest, with Benny Page and Ed Solo also taking to the stage in the Lakota and Coroners Court car park. “I like the energy in Bristol,” Flowdan tells Nitelife magazine. “I like that there is a music love – it’s not just a clubbing city, it’s a parties for music city. I rate Bristol for its music.” Flowdan has been part of a major shift in the role of the MC, from the traditional format – master of ceremonies - toasting over other people’s tracks all night, to a solo artist producing compact 40 minutes sets, releasing albums and topping festival line-ups. “There is still such thing as the MC that it just a party host,” says Flowdan. “But I think the evolution of the MC as a solo artist is due to the individual drive of the MC thinking they’ve got more to offer than just being a party host or talking over a DJ set.
I didn’t want to make music until Wiley brought the grime sound to me. “Sometimes it’s culture as well - some people just grew up hearing MCs toasting over various beats so they think that’s how they want to do it.” Flowdan has no doubt that the success and determination of his MOBO award-winning friend Wiley helped encourage him to pursue a career in music. “Definitely the fact that Wiley had the drive to want to do more stuff individually influenced me. “If we didn’t build Roll Deep, I don’t know if I’d be doing music now, because to me Roll Deep created a style of music that I felt comfortable making. I didn’t want to make music until Wiley brought the grime sound to me. “So even though I was an MC from school doing things on drum and bass, I always called it ‘MC’ I didn’t really want to make music until I heard it was possible to do a whole unique sound and a whole unique take on my thoughts and my culture.” That ‘unique sound’ for Flowdan falls somewhere between grime and dup step with strong jungle and reggae influences. “I’d definitely call myself a grime MC, because everything I do is a straight UK take on the mixture of things I’ve been exposed to. When you say grime, you have to think of the UK and that’s why I feel it’s a very personal statement when I use the word grime. And again, if there wasn’t grime, I wouldn’t be expressing in this way.” Although Flowdan is a grime veteran, the resurgence of the genre in recent years has helped put him back in the

limelight. His 2008 track with The Bug and Killa P, ‘Skeng’ completely blew up and is still gathering momentum today. We asked whether he’d had any idea it was going to be such a big thing for him: “Definitely never. I wasn’t too gas to make the song, but I made it and I was very surprised. I did it because I liked the instrumental, but I didn’t know where it was going to go.” While grime continues to grow more and more popular, Flowdan isn’t worried that the genre is going to suffer or get diluted in some way, as has happened with dub step and house – the last big styles of music to blow up in this way. “Grime is still artist-led, so it’s down to the vocalists ultimately where it goes. Whereas dubstep was about producers getting caught up in a style and sound of music,” he says. “Grime can be mainstream, as long as it’s done with integrity and an honesty for the sound. “Because when you can just put a science to a situation it takes away from the beautiful things that a lot of creative people spend time trying to hone and trying to practice when someone just comes along and calculates how it works and just puts a song out. It doesn’t really do much but make money. “It’s not up to me what happens, but for me I like it when things are done for the right reasons, and mainstream isn’t a problem.”

STANTON WARRIORS
Stanton Warriors AKA Bristol’s Dominic Butler and Mark Yardley are back on the scene with their hotly anticipated new album Rebel Bass due for release this July.
But hardcore fans (there are many) can rest easy, because they’re still producing that Stanton sound: a brilliant amalgamation of party-underground music – if you believe such a thing can exist.
The bass-loving Bristolians have been getting us dancing for nigh on two decades now, with several successful albums under their belt, plus official remixes for Basement Jaxx, Fatboy Slim and Gorrilaz.
“You can make tracks that are cool and trendy and that’s all very well, and smash out a club as well,” says Dominic.
And their success shows no signs of slowing. When the DJ duo posted a clip to Facebook of new Rebel Bass track ‘The One’, the video had nearly two million views and thousands upon thousands of shares, likes and comments. “We’ve evolved a bit in our sound,” Dominic says. “But primarily we’re still really hard on our beats, and anything can go on top of those so we’ve got some good vocalists and samples.”

Rebel Bass then, couldn’t be a more fitting title for the new album, as the producers continue to refuse to compromise their sound in favour of what’s cool. “We’ve always rebelled against contemporary sounds – we always do our own thing,” says Dominic. “I think it makes it, a) more fun as a producer and DJ to do something more creative – anyone can turn up and play the twenty latest house tunes, or whatever; and b) when people do
get into it, the reward is better - it pays better dividends.” Already this year, the Warriors have undertaken a massive world tour, plus a Far East tour and North American tour, as well as managing a packed out festival schedule showcasing the new Rebel Bass; but the perfectionists have only recently handed over the finished album. “We kept changing the album, because we were testing different tracks out internationally. We kept tweaking this and tweaking that, and then we did a remix of one of the tracks and realised the remix was better. But we got it to a point where we realised, ‘right, that’s it. This works, tracks are going off, people are asking about them...’” If you missed Stanton Warriors play their (too-rare) Bristol gig at Marble Factory last month, they will be bringing their new tracks

home to Bristol again this September at Tokyo World festival in Eastville Park. And they’ll definitely be one on the line-up not to miss. “We almost get viewed as a band in a way, even though we’re not - we’re DJs,” says Dominic. “But when we DJ we are playing 90 percent our own tracks or our own remixes. I think in this day and age - when anyone can download anything – that’s important. You’re going to get a unique set with us, which a lot of DJs haven’t got the ability to do because they haven’t got the original material. “It’s important because if you’re going to fly all the way to Sydney, for example, and play a big party out there but you’re just standing there playing tracks on Beatport - they can do that themselves – there’s no point flying you all that way. “If people are going to buy a ticket and come to our gig, then they’re going to hear stuff they haven’t heard before. We want to make it worth their effort.”

DJ YODA // GRILLSTOCK FESTIVAL JULY 11-12
DJ Yoda, AKA Duncan Beiny is everyone’s favourite scratcher and cut and paste master. Best known for combining both old and new sounds - from 80s pop to 30s swing - in his How to Cut and Paste series, as well as his entertaining audio visual ‘VJ’ sets; it’s fair to say DJ Yoda has a knack for bringing smiles to the dancefloor. The producer who enjoys incorporating the key skills and disciplines of hip-hop in his sound continues to push music to new realms, with help from collaborating artists along the way. Yoda stepped up his musical technique again this March when he returned with his third album Breakfast of Champions, this time accompanied by a live band. The energised sounds from the Yoda orchestrated band features some of the UK’s finest selection of MCs, including Rex Domino and The Mouse Outfit’s own Sparkz and Truthos Mufasa. Bristol residents can expect DJ Yoda to return to the city again this July when he takes over the Bar Stage at this year’s Grillstock Festival. Nitelife were able to catch a few words with the man himself in the run up to the festival to talk about his latest release, his next How to Cut and Paste series and even the announcement of his own BBQ restaurant set to open in London later this year. You’re famous for your mash ups of old and new. How did you first get into producing music? Both my parents worked in music and my dad literally kept his record collection in my bedroom, so I grew up as a kid surrounded by records. The first bits of music I actually got into were hip-hop tracks and bits of pop music that were hip-hop inspired in the late eighties. All that music has lots of different samples and scratching in, and that’s what inspired me to start making music like that. I thought rather than learning a traditional instrument I could just take bits and pieces of everything I like and make something new out of it.

You’re currently riding the wave of success from your latest release Breakfast of Champions that dropped March this year. This release is something a little different to what Yoda fans are used to. How’s the response been so far? It’s been really nice! That’s exactly why I did it because, like I told you, I’ve never sat down and created a band with traditional instruments. I have all these mixed CDs and albums out, but I’ve never tried to make something from scratch with just a drummer, guitar players, a brass section and a string section and that was the whole idea behind Breakfast of Champions. It was really satisfying to do that and along the way I’ve met some really cool people that I’ll be friends with for life. It’s amazing how a good dozen of us came together for this project. We get on so well too, so it’s been really good fun touring it and really good fun making the album. So is this sound the new you? Do you plan on working with a live band again in the future? I try to do something different every time round. I’m not really one for treading water and I get bored very quickly, hence my style of DJing and running through music really fast, playing all different types of music. I just get bored doing the same thing. I’ll try something different again next, whatever that will be. On the subject of Breakfast of Champions, what’s your idea of the perfect breakfast? I’m a big fan of American breakfast cereals that are multi-coloured. I’d be happy with a big bowl of very sugary, very artificial American cereal any day! Not only are you famous for your mash-ups, but you’re also
recognised for delivering an incredible live show, often with an AV set. What inspired you to start incorporating AV/VJ sets into your live shows? Before technology allowed me to do that, I’d always been throwing in some kind of audio samples from movies and TV shows because that’s just the way I approach sampling. I think it’s cool to throw in everything that you’re influenced by! Then technology improved and allowed you to actually use those movies and TV shows as part of the show, so I just jumped on that because it seemed like a natural progression. Now I just consider it another way of DJing. It’s cool to be able to throw in a bit of a movie I like as well as a song that I like. I’ve read somewhere that you like to make people laugh as well as enjoy the music, instead of just watching a DJ do their thing behind the decks. Yeah well, just watching a DJ in the clubs is sometimes quite miserable and people can forget that you’re out on a Saturday night for entertainment. So yeah, I just kind of enjoy it more when I’m smiling and they’re smiling. You’ve previously collaborated with artists like Roots Manuva and Action Bronson in 2012’s Chop Suey and have joined forces with The Mouse Outfit’s Sparkz in your latest release. Who would you consider working with in the future? Would you keep in theme with hip-hop or branch out? That’s what I’m always thinking about to tell you the truth because I’ve found that the most special moments happen when I’m collaborating. It’s one thing working as a solo producer, but when you actually get to interact with someone and take on their ideas and make a

true collaboration, they’re always my favourite moments. That’s why in my first two albums I collaborated with someone different in every song. I basically sat down and made a list of who would be cool to work with and have one by one been ticking them off. So I don’t know who yet, but it’s something that’s definitely on my mind at the moment and I am thinking about it. You’ve played around with so many genres, time periods and themes in your How to Cut and Paste mixes, what’s been your favourite so far? I think as far as for the love of the music from the gut, the eighties one. Really, the concept behind that mix was the music I listened to when I was a kid. It was music that, if you didn’t grow up with it you’ll probably think it’s quite awful, but because it’s part of my childhood, I liked working with it. Maybe from a technical level I’d have to say the thirties edition, because it was really interesting to try and combine that era of music with the hip-hop stuff that I normally do. But to be fair, I enjoy them all, that’s why I do it. I tend to go through a phase of listening to a certain type of music and then make a How to Cut and Paste mix out of it. I’m just starting on one at the moment – well, I’ve just decided what the next one is gonna be, but I’m not going to give it away!
Bristol is genuinely my favourite city Are you sure we can’t squeeze any hints out of you? Yes! Last week I decided what the next one is going to be, but what happens right now is a great big long period of research and sample taking, but I don’t want to ruin it in case. Ok, we understand if you want to keep your cards close to your chest for now. You mentioned you have to do a lot of research - what does that entail? Once I’ve chosen the topic, I go through as much music as I can and search out stuff online, order videos and DVDs, recycle old minidiscs and VHS and just try and find as many samples as possible. A lot of work goes into it.
Have you got any advice for all the bedroom producers out there wanting to get their music heard? The bit of advice I’d give is so simple but at the same time quite difficult and that would be to stay true to yourself and be honest to your own tastes. I hear people go wrong when they try and do what they think is ‘cool’ or what they think other people will want to hear, but if you are just completely honest about what you love then I think you will automatically come up with something unique. You’re performing at Bristol’s Grillstock Festival this July and recently performed an AV show at The Marble Factory. What do you enjoy about Bristol that keeps bringing you back for more? In all honesty, even though I was born in London and grew up there, I spent years and years talking about how I could move to Bristol because it is genuinely my favourite city. I absolutely love it there and I feel at home whenever I’m there. The whole vibe of Bristol totally fits me. Even when I firstly started selling mixtapes to independent record stores, Bristol was always the best place for me. It’s my favourite place to DJ and I cannot sing Bristol’s praises highly enough.
Finally, what’s next in the pipeline? Well there will be one more single from Breakfast of Champions. I’ve had two singles so far and one more to go and I’ll still be on tour with the band over the summer. The next project will be the How to Cut and Paste mix, but that’s a few months off yet. And what’s this I hear about a BBQ Restaurant? Oh yeah, I’m opening up a BBQ Restaurant in London. Kind of Grillstock relevant as well, if you think about it! All this stuff I’ve been doing has been tied in with food, so like Breakfast of Champions, a whole song about pizza and even songs about breakfast cereal. The food that my music relates to most would probably be BBQ because of this kind of whole American Deep South sound that I’m into, so I’ve got a restaurant called ‘Austen’s Smokehouse’ opening at the end of July in London and I’m very hyped about it.

Like many Bristol promoters, James Koch moved here to study and found himself drifting into putting on music events at various venues around the city, most notably the Icecold nights of the mid-noughties that many party-goers will remember. In 2012, he took over the site of recently closed but well-loved Gloucester Road venue, The Prom with his business partner and good friend James Smailes; and The Galllimaufry was born. “When we took this place on, we were well aware of the heritage and the people that had played here. “It did take a bit of communicating with people and getting a feel for the place and the area to work out what we were going to do with the music side of things. I’m into all sorts of music, and that’s reflected in what we do here.” James also has a keen eye for burgeoning talent and gave a young George Ezra an early platform with a six-week residency at The Galli.

“Ehi was the single most energetic, positive and gregarious person I have had the good fortune to know. Having met him whilst he was working behind the bar during the legendary Fez Club years, we eventually set up Icecold Parties in the midnoughties together. For four years we worked, partied, chilled, and repeated together - at one point it was eight events a week!
“Bristol’s great in terms of trying to support each other and the acts, and sharing information and recommending artists,” he says. “In terms of independents, there is definitely an uplift in Bristol – whether you’re an artist or working in the arts, or you’re just an independent trader, people tend to want to support each other and push each other up, as opposed to fighting over the scraps. “It feels like there is enough to go around. And there is more power in collaboration than there is in just looking out for yourself.” As a photographer, James also helps supports local artists, with regular art exhibitions as well as his own fantastic street photography plastering the walls of the Galli. “I’ve been here 16 years now and Bristol feels stronger and better than ever. There’s got to be a reason for that! It’s a really interesting culture we’ve got here. It’s just good to be here and be involved in a small way and to help that keep going.
“He’d be manning the door one minute, at the bar the next, then tearing up the dance floor - the boy could move! Often we’d retire back to my flat at the end of the night with a few friends. By dawn it’d often just be Ehi and me chatting until he fell asleep on my couch. I guess we kind of burnt out but I’d like to think we made our mark. “Ehi certainly did, on so many people. I’ll miss his smile, bellowing laugh, irrepressible verve for conversation and knack of breaking things down to the truth. “My thoughts are with his family, girlfriend Christina, and friends. Our pal Ingo joked that this will be the biggest funeral since Nelson Mandela. Memories of his life, deeds and spirit will continue forever in others. We’ll never forget. RIP Ehi.”
In his 16 years, James says he has had some wild times, including hanging out with Outkast and vocalist Sleepy Brown.
“By the end of his residency George had outgrown us,” says James. “It was too busy - I was turning people away!”
“Let me put it this way, Sleepy Brown doesn’t get much sleep. He was good fun to hang out with!” James says.
More recently, James has been repping new South West talent Henry Green, who has played seven or eight gigs at the Galli since James first met him in 2013.
“Putting on those nights was fun and it was probably more of a lifestyle choice at the time, to be enjoying ourselves, as much as a profession.”
