The Toyota Big Air has been running since 1997 and is now one of the most prestigious snowboarding events on the world snowboard calendar. Every year some of the world’s best snowboarders come to Japan to compete for the title of King of Air. The ranks of previous winners include Shaun White, Nicolas Muller and Antti Autti. Whilst international snowboarders dominate the top rankings there have been strong showings from local Japanese riders like Masatake Yamamoto. Japanese and international tourists join together in the main stadium, eyes focused on the giant straight jump towering over them. Live music pumping from the giant speakers clashes with the voices of the announcers, both drowned out by the screams of the crowds as riders fly from the jump. Flood lights glaring down and big screen TVs showing all the action live. When you combine the best riders in the world with a rock concert style atmosphere you have an amazing spectacle worth seeing. The main event is the jump competition with 16 riders competing for the title. 8 top international snowboarders are invited to compete against 8 of Japan’s best riders for 10,000,000 yen and a Toyota Landcruiser Prado.
