Anant National University (AnantU) Anant National University, also known as AnantU, is India’s first design university offering programmes in design and architecture. The institution presents design as a solution to the challenges of humanity. It highlights the contribution of the heart, head and hand as symbols of attitude, knowledge and skill to make the solution elegant and sustainable.

Heart: This represents a significant commitment to the issues that make us human and is reflected in activities, projects and initiatives related to sustainability, climate change, poverty alleviation, heritage preservation, rural livelihoods, etc.

Head: This represents a deep commitment to the cognitive component of design, which, in addition to the interdisciplinary approach to design education, is reflected in extensive theoretical contributions through seminar courses.

Hand: Represents activities performed by our hands and emphasizes the idea that getting our hands dirty is necessary to learn and grow. It is evident in the activities in the makerspace, in study-based courses and in the institutional culture of learning by doing.

Bachelors of Design at AnantU Bachelor of Design (B.Des) is a comprehensive undergraduate programme that seeks to challenge today’s physical, material and functional reality to create innovative and sustainable life. The aim is to prepare designers for the future, to meet the demands arising from new realities driven by technological disruptions. Anant National University offers this programme in six different disciplines i.e. Space Design, Product Design, Communication Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Interaction Design and Transdisciplinary Design.

The first two semesters of the bachelor’s programme at AnantU are the Foundation year, in which both architecture students and design students learn and explore together. This rigorous programme ensures students are well-versed and thorough with their understanding of fundamental design concepts.

The Foundation Year includes courses such as Elements of Design, Theory of Design, Technical Drawing, Visualization and Representation, Design Principles, Materials: Properties and Processes, Design in Context, Human-Cantered Design, and many more inputs including RSP. After the Foundation year, the students choose their field of study and then begin their path to becoming a specialist designer.

Product Design at AnantU The Product Design programme at Anant National University teaches a strategic problem-solving process that drives innovation, builds business success, and leads to a better quality of life through innovative products, systems, services, and experiences. The programme promotes impact through design. It trains designers not only to solve today’s problems, but also to propose new ways for the future.

The programme informs designers about prevailing global problems and encourages them to develop innovative solutions. It facilitates personal development and allows students to explore practical design solutions through hands-on learning modules. This improves students’ cognitive ergonomics, shape study, CAD skills, understanding of materials, research methodology, etc.

The programme’s emphasis on team participation shapes students’ ability to work collaboratively. The degree of difficulty and the degree of complexity of the projects increase as the next semester begins. And with a gradual increase in the level and understanding of broader areas of product design, a student enters his/her professional career.

Project in a Nutshell The Graduation Project is a final academic project for a student that marks the end of the academic tenure at Anant National University. It is the highlight in the field of design on a topic closely related to disciple of study. The duration of the final project is 4 to 6 months, during which the student must carry out a completely new project, be it a client project or an individual project, where a professional result is expected with real scenarios and implementation possibilities/capabilities.

The Graduation project is an opportunity for the student to demonstrate their expertise as an individual design practitioner. It must reflect the thought that is manifested through creativity and innovation. The project must lead to the creation of new knowledge and exposes the student to real scenarios and helps to understand the limitations the industry. This helps to understand the role of a designer in the industry, which is not just limited to the design, but also coordinates with various departments to make the best of it. It also helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses.

There are many brands that are in the process of designing different types of bags in the market. These bags, which focus on different customer segments like fashion, leisure, work, etc., come in different sizes but in most cases, it can hold many essentials within compartments but have very little internal organization available.

My role in this project is to design everyday commuter bag organizers. The outcome of this project is driven by a curiosity to understand the unique lifestyle of the men and women who work in an urban environment and in order to provide them with the best possible bag organizational solution that is comfortable to use. An intense process of questioning every design decision, the needs and requirements of the client shaped this project.

This project was a long process involving research, ideation, form study, exploration, prototyping, etc. The end result is a collection of organizers that understands its user and adapts to their needs. Most importantly, more than the result one has to experience the journey and for me this journey was an excellent opportunity.

Why this Project ?

Product design is about the passion to help people with creative, distinctive, aesthetic and useful product solutions. Product design is engaging, understanding and creating a perfect blend between users’ needs and its solutions. For my final graduation project, I was hoping for some incredibly challenging project that would push me to my extreme limits and help me learn, get inspired and explore some whole new directions in the stream I wanted to work in.

As Roy T. Bennet once said “You learn something valuable from all of the significant events and people, but you never touch your true potential until you challenge yourself to go beyond imposed limitations.” which for me was taking up the task of graduation project and with all the exciting challenges that came across me with it. I believe that this project ended up helping me grow as a designer and also as an individual.

If we look around, bags are currently one of the most common products that we see around us almost everywhere. The bags are designed to make it easy to carry our daily essentials anywhere, longer. But these bags have very little internal organization. Most travellers know the difficulty of packing everything in a bag and then digging in the bag to find what they are looking for at that particular moment. This includes wallets, phones, makeup, chargers, hard drives, etc. Few of them come through, few of them start carrying multiple bags and few carries multiple pouches to keep things in one bag in place. This could create uneven loads within the bag, which can lead to shoulder and back pain and discomfort.

Current Scenario What’s the Reason In an urban setting, you’ll see most people juggling with their bags on their way to work, while travelling, or at a market or on the street. Especially those who work in a “regular” office have become accustomed to carrying multiple items such as books, documents, laptops, lunch boxes, other technology products, personal care products, water bottles, etc.

In this fast-paced world, people are unaware that a shortage of internal organization in the bag can cause things to get mixed up inside the bag and create uneven loads inside the bags, which can lead to neck,shoulder, back and lower back pain. On the other hand, in a busy city, finding things in a bag with little or no internal organization can sometimes be a hassle and waste of time. A survey conducted by Pilot Pen Australia of almost 1,500 Australian women in order to discover what women carry in their bags, it turns out that 34.5 % of women spend 81 days over their lifetime searching in their handbags, spending at least five minutes searching around trying to find keys.

Many travellers access their products in a bag in a very awkward posture trying to find things in the bag, which can lead to sprains in the body.

Women Women have too little or no space in the pockets of their clothes and are therefore completely dependent on bags. The bags that are commonly used by women have a huge compartmental space, but the bags are usually not organized enough, so all the items in the bag become easily disorganized.

There is not enough room in a shoulder bag or purse for a water bottle. Few bags don’t have special provisions for sensitive electronics. Small items can be easily misplaced and wired items get tangled. Also while switching bags, they have to empty the entire bag and then rearrange it with all the necessary items in the other bag, which takes time and energy.

Men Men are comparatively less reliant on bags for organization, but face similar organizational problems. Because their essentials can easily slip into their pockets, there are certain things that require a bag. It’s easier to pack all items in one bag, but it can get messy at times. Also, not all bags have adequate structural support, so they don’t retain their shape. Few bags do not have enough structural support for electronic items such as hard-disc, tablets, camera lens, etc.

Women tend to rely more on bags than men, so women are more likely to experience organizational issues than men. But both do have some similar bag organization issues.

Project Brief To Design bag organizers for professionals working in urban cities, with smart, elegant and adaptable design, optimized for their daily usage and functionality.

Deliverables This project category includes commonly used bags, including casual bags, work bags, etc. This involves the study of bag details, forms, materials and style.

Study of Indian and international markets. The aim is to understand the overall design language of bags, bag organizers and similar product ranges and their prices.

Design with a broad understanding of functionality and utility. The target audience of users are professionals working in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. The final output of this project is to make 2 - 3 organizer designs as a collection.

Scope I believe this project has high potential for functional innovation and to understand the process and what is required to make the best suitable organizer for the needs of professionals I followed a variety of research paths.

This project offers an opportunity to explore both potential markets with a deep understanding of user issues through interaction. This project will allow to study and understand the existing organizers, their structure, material, etc. this project will give a chance to introduce us to the real working environment and challenges, leading to a deep understanding of ergonomics and user centric designs.

Methodology Empathize The design process is a method to be creative, productive and precise. Design thinking is a process related to solving problems in a strongly human-centric way.

There are five stages of design thinking, but they aren’t always sequential or necessarily follow a specific order, and they can iterate and refine our solutions through the process.

Empathy: Empathy is a crucial starting point for successful design thinking solutions. The designer needs to know who they are solving a problem for, and a deep understanding of the consumer is the most important input to ensure success. Understanding the consumer’s requirements, lifestyle, desires, etc., which helps to understand the situation clearly and also identify opportunities.

Define: The second phase of the process is about clarity and definition. After gathering all consumer insights, initial research and interviews, a creative brief is prepared with strategic and creative inspiration. A solid brief allows designers to orient themselves, once the articulation is clear we can move on to the ideation phase.

Ideation: After a deep understanding of the target audience and a well-formulated briefing at this stage, a designer starts developing possible solutions. Creativity is unleashed, which then leads to established design paths that offer a solution. It starts with brainstorming, mind-mapping ideas to creating final forms and concepts which then lead to concept prototyping.

Prototyping: This phase is all about experimenting and exploring ideas into tangible products. Understanding the audience is key to testing the solution, to reveal any gaps, flaws, or limitations in the concepts. During this phase, proposed solutions may be improvised, redesigned, or sometimes even discarded through a series of revisions.

After deciding on the final solution, the next step is to test it.

Test: After all the creative and overwhelming process its time to take reviews and feedbacks from the target audience, to finally understand the product and its benchmark on how well is has addressed the problem.

So, after all the testing and feedback sessions the final product is then taken to the real market or sometime even reconsidered to take for further improvements and changes needed in the product.

The method proposes a great combination of audience interaction, design thinking, prototyping and user testing as the most important and natural part of the phases. The aim of this process is to arrive at desirable and realizable solutions. When offering a solution, the main focus must be on the technical implementation and feasibility in order to ultimately lead to a market-ready solution.

What is a Bag ?

A bag is a pouch like structure which was a common tool in the form of a non-rigid container. Bags have been around for thousands of years and have been carried by both men and women.

During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution era, many new manufacturing methods and techniques were invented. New materials emerged and were used to make bags, leading to new models and designs.

Bags and purses have been a practical item for both men and women’s daily use, since the dawn of civilization. They used to carry money and other necessary items as our clothes did not have pockets back then.

In the 20th century, art and fashion movements came and went in rapid succession, and with them the handbag evolved. However, the emancipation of women was the most influential factor in the design of the bag. As more women became employed and more mobile, their bags had to meet an increasing variety of practical needs. So, all different kinds of bags were created.

Bags and purses came in a variety of designs for different purposes such as bags with clasps, leather pouches and purses with long drawstrings. With the exception of a few rare shoulder bags, these were all worn attached to a belt or girdle. The introduction of pockets in late 16th century led to men’s bags slowly disappearing. From then on, handbags belonged almost exclusively to women.

Types of Shoulder Bags

Tote Bag A tote bag, on the other hand, is a large, unfastened bag with double handles. Often referred to as a “tote bag,” this bag is usually made of sturdy materials like nylon and canvas with leather handles to carry heavy loads. A tote bag is usually carried over one shoulder with its two short straps. It has a simple structure with minimal pockets.

Tote bags also come in different materials, colours and sizes, making them extremely versatile and can be carried on different occasions. It ranges from a classic tote bag which is ideal for weekend errands, to a sleek leather tote that can comfortably carry documents from one meeting to the next. Another universal feature of a tote bag is its two long straps with a larger strap drop and an open top. They are usually square or rectangular in shape and have a large and wide bottom. Some have zipper closures included.

Market tote – The Market totes are the classic, simple and practical.

This usually has one slot and best for carrying groceries.

Travel Tote – Similar to the market tote, the travel tote is a large bag, but unlike the classic that only has one slot, this one features a lot more slots that’s suitable for storing all of your travel essentials with ease. These are usually crafted from leather and are meant to be strong and durable for them to be the best and most practical carry ons for your travel.

Work tote – These totes sometime have features of electronic pockets for keeping laptops and tablets. They are also usually made up of leather or faux leather.

Foldable totes – A foldable tote on the other hand folds easily, doesn’t take much space, and often features a zippered pocket big enough to store different items. These bags are made in tall styled with soft cloth or leather so they can be folded down. Fold over bags is made in a huge variety of sizes and styles, but the foldable top is always the same.

Boat tote – Boat tote got its name for the bottom being shaped like a boat. These bags are usually made out of canvas, but are also available in other materials like cloth and nylon. Quite similar to the classic, this features a few extra slots to give the look and feel of a bag more than a tote.

Diaper tote – Diapers and other essentials can usually be carried in every bag, but they can usually be worn across the body and feature a number of pockets and slots for all of your baby essentials including the bottles and more. These totes are crafted from cloth and are usually really soft and colourful with fun prints on them.

Promotional Tote – These inexpensive, durable and simple bags are usually made out of non-woven water-resistant materials. As the name suggests, these are a great starter point for companies that have never gone down the promotional totes path. Usually meant only for promotional purposes these bags have a single slot, the same as the classic tote.

Messenger Bag A messenger bag is a type of sack, usually made of a fabric (natural or synthetic) and worn over one shoulder with a strap that crosses the chest and supports the back at the lower back or side, or it can be worn on one side and are usually secured with a buckle, clasp, or zipper.

Messenger bags are now a street fashion icon, some types of messenger bags are called carryalls and a smaller version is often referred to as a sling bag. The building material is more diverse in terms of texture, smoothness and durability, etc.

It has a signature large front flap and doesn’t have a solid frame which remains floppy. It usually has fewer compartments and is often less structured than a briefcase or laptop messenger bag. Available in different styles and colours.

Bucket Bag According to the name, bucket bags have the shape of a bucket. Some of these bags are open at the top, which isn’t very secure, but there are also some that have a drawstring closure. These bags usually have shoulder straps and are worn as a shoulder bag. The bucket bag offers plenty of storage space and can store a large number of items such as smart phones, wallets, toiletries, books and more. This bag is often taller than it is wide, but the sides aren’t as firm as other self-standing bags.

Crossbody Bag In the 17th century both men and women wore small cloth or leather bags on their bodies. They were designed more in the 17th century. Back then, these bags were known as utility bags because they were used to store small tools, mail, money, etc. Crossbody bags are available in all colours, styles and sizes .

The crossbody bag is a small bag that is strapped across the body and rests on one side of the hip. These bags often feature adjustable straps that allow to carry the bag higher or lower on your body depending on the preference and comfort level. This customizable option can be found on most of the best travel crossbody bags.

Hobo Bag The hobo bag is characterized by its crescent shape, relaxed stance and long handle designed to be carried on the shoulder. This bag is usually large and made of a soft, flexible material that tends to sag when placed. This bag is called a hobo bag because it looks just like the pack on a stick. The hobo bag has been part of the fashion world for almost a century. Featuring a recognizable profile, it features a large pocket with a wider centre opening and handles made from the same material as the rest of the bag in a pattern throughout. Ideal for casual wear, the baggy silhouette of this bag makes it stand out even more with its bohemian style.

Satchel Bag

Satchel refers to those large and sturdy handbags that have a flat and wide bottom. The bag in most cases the opening is covered with a flap and usually comes with two handles. But it also does not have to come with a flap and two handles, as there might be one handle or no flaps. It may also come with a long shoulder strap which can be hung on a shoulder if need to. Since satchels are a larger type of handbags, they are commonly used for carrying bulkier items like laptops, books, files etc. both men and women wear satchel bags either for school, work, or travel.

Briefcases are usually carried with a handle, but many now come with a shoulder strap that allows the user to carry them two different ways. In the past, briefcases were associated with employees to carry important documents. Modern briefcases come with extra pockets and internal padding that help protect laptops and tablets. While you can still find suitcases with just one large interior, many suitcases now also have features that help people stay organized, like dedicated compartments, accordion-style dividers, dividers, and small interior and exterior pockets. Today you can find briefcases in a variety of materials including fabric, leather, vinyl, plastic and even thin metal. Briefcases often come with a small lock, giving people a chance to keep their important items a little more secure. Modern briefcase types include the laptop briefcase, which is designed for laptops and tablets, and the messenger briefcases and also briefcase satchel which come with a shoulder strap.

Daypack A backpack is arguably the most popular type of backpack. That’s because they’re affordable, roomy, and incredibly versatile. You can use them for school, college, office, hiking and even travel.

They are usually quite simple but roomy. The main compartment is front-loading and will have a volume of around 20-40 litres. Few might have extra pockets to organize your smaller items, but for the most part you get a roomy main compartment and an external pocket or two. The downside of this type of backpack is that it doesn’t retain its shape when half empty and it mostly lacks internal organization. In addition, they are usually not waterproof.

Laptop Backpack That being said, laptop backpacks tend to have a slightly smaller main compartment compared to regular college backpacks. They hold about 5-10 litres less than a similarly sized backpack. Most laptop backpacks are specialized for everyday office use. That’s why they have padded straps and soft back panels for comfort, they’re minimalist and look professional, and they hold their shape when half full or empty. They are also equipped with many pockets and compartments to organize chargers, tablets, headphones, keys, pens and notebooks, sunglasses and other everyday items.

Leather Backpack Compared to regular backpacks, leather backpacks are heavier, have less internal space and are not as comfortable. However, many people still prefer to carry them over regular backpacks mainly because of their good looks. Leather backpacks are incredibly durable and the signature vintage style looks amazing.

Tote Backpack In short, tote bags are regular tote bags with two shoulder straps on the back. More often, people choose them just for their unique looks, not their practicality. Although the main compartment is quite roomy, but this bag does not contain too many smaller compartments and pockets to organize all those smaller items. Compared to normal backpacks, tote bags are less comfortable because the shoulder straps are not heavily padded. Tote backpacks are a pretty solid option for an everyday backpack. They are really affordable, attractive and quite roomy inside.

Sternum Strap

Shoulder straps help evenly distribute your load between both shoulders. Most shoulder straps are adjustable to help correctly position the backpack on your back. One of the main differences between men’s and women’s backpacks is the width between shoulder straps. Shoulder straps help distribute the load evenly over both shoulders.

Most shoulder straps are adjustable to properly position the pack on your back. One of the main differences between men’s and women’s backpacks is the width between the shoulder straps.

The chest strap or sternum strap is a strap that fastens across the chest to relieve tension in the shoulders. It is a bridge between shoulder straps that improves load stability. The sternum straps also help prevent shoulder straps from slipping and heavy backpacks from swinging from side to side while moving or walking. Chest straps are also commonly seen in many everyday backpacks designed to carry heavier loads, such as personal item backpack or school backpack.

Hip Belt A hip belt, also known as a waist strap, is a padded strap that goes around the top of your hipbone to distribute the weight of the pack from your shoulders to your hips.

Hip belts are most commonly found in outdoor and travel backpacks designed to carry large, heavy loads.

Types of Backpack Shoulder Straps Straight Straight shoulder straps are more often found in fashionable backpacks where prolonged use of heavy loads is not a priority. Most bag manufacturers design straight shoulder straps that are adjustable to allow the wearer to position the backpack on their back where is comfortable, but that’s where the ergonomic features end.

Although padding is typical, straight shoulder straps made from single pieces of nylon, canvas, or leather with no padding are also commonly seen.

Curved The backpack’s curved shoulder straps are designed to mimic the body shape for a more ergonomic fit. It’s common to see advanced padding and materials like EVA foam, dual-density foam, and mesh lining for breath-ability combined with curved backpack straps to maximize backpack comfort.

One-piece The shoulder straps are made from a single piece of material and are connected to a “bridge” at the top of the pack. Some one-piece shoulder straps are designed so that the bridge section of the backpack straps acts as a grab handle. These types of backpack shoulder straps are commonly seen on travel backpacks and outdoor backpacks where fit is important.

Types of Backpack Access When we talk about “Access Types,” we describe the different ways a person can get into a main compartment to access his/her belongings. There are dozens of main compartment access designs, but these are some of the most common.

Top Access Top entry packs allow access to the main compartment from the top of the pack. Few top access packs have what is called a flap, which is the top of the pack that allows you to close or buckle the pack. While most top access backpacks usually only open with a zipper. While many lid backpacks close with a zipper, others can also be tied or fastened with a drawstring.

Drawstring Drawstring openings use a drawstring to tighten and close the pack instead of a zipper or buckle. This type of backpack opening is used almost exclusively on top access backpacks and is often combined with a drawstring cover.

Roll Top Roll-top backpacks feature additional fabric at the top of the bag that “rolls up” and compresses to close. Roll-top backpacks waterproof the inside of a bag better than a zippered or drawstring opening and are popular with outdoor backpacks for this reason. Another feature of roll-top backpacks is the ability to compress or expand the main compartment as needed.

Monali work as a managing secretariat in MCHI. She is married and is a mother of a young daughter. she aspires to balance her work life and personal life efficiently and also find some time from her busy schedule for her passion. She loves to design outfits and often design and make outfits for herself and her family. If possible she would like to perceive her passion as a full time job in future. She is the backbone of her family. She is currently going through some medical treatment. She loves travelling and exploring new things.

On a regular day Monali start her commute by getting an auto till the station and then travelling by local trains from Kalwa to CSMT on the peak hours and later after reaching CSMT station the takes long walk to her office. This entire journey takes around 2.5 - 3hours in one go. She uses three different types of commutes daily. She normally carries a tote bag for her daily commute. It is a nightmare to keep the items organized. No matter how much one try to keep it organized but in the end everything is a mess. What she does not like is that it is very difficult to find something in the bag when everything is mixed up.

Currently she is working on her final Graduation project. She was doing internship and education simultaneously. But when she was doing internship she used to commute to her work place on foot and required to carry her all gadgets like laptops, books, tablet, hard-drive, chargers, etc. to her work place. The distance of their work place was almost 20 minutes. And she used to carry backpack for the same. The small items which were carried inside her bag used to get mixed up. Whenever she needed anything she need to take off the backpack completely and then search for that particular item.

Sachin is a Singer by profession and work as a freelancer and he also perform his own shows. He is a self-taught singer has a singers club where they regularly practices. He also teaches other interested people. He is also into instruments as he love playing some of them. He has a get going personality.

Routine Sachin, is a freelancer so there no fixed regular routine. He usually starts his day at around 10 in the morning. he starts with his regular singing practice and managing his events or show if they. He himself draws his entire show. He is mostly comfortable with old songs comparative to the new songs. He usually commutes with his two wheeler wherever he needs to go or sometimes also hire a car to transport his items at the show’s venue. He uses a backpack to carry all his stuff. He regularly carries a tablet, notepad, mics, connecting wires, chargers, etc. But the problem he faces is that the wire and other items gets tangled into each other due to lack of organization in the bag.

Whenever he need some item he has to search for it and then has to spend time on separating tangled things.

Market Study In the current segments of organizers for shoulder bags and backpacks, a number of brands on the international and national market were analysed. This study was conducted to understand what is happening in terms of function and usability. Provision of information on product variations and innovations. The pockets are very tight it should have more room for broader things.

Reflections This project was a challenge and it actually turned into a somewhat complicated and detailed project.

It’s important to understand the project brief and questioning the right things.

The process of generating different ideas and letting the imagination run wild, the process and the limits that arise after working within the set limits and from there, transforming the product design into a feasible product execution.

This trip was a great joy and taught me many new things. The entire journey was about asking consumers the right questions and understanding their needs, ideologies and requirements. Studying the best-selling product, styles and colours helped me to understand and analyse consumer choices.

Working on this project has provided me with deep learning related to design process, communication and practical skills. This project helped me explore different avenues of exploration. When I consider the understanding and knowledge I gained through this project, it completely changed the way I look at design. This project provided me with a good l earning opportunity and made me think and design practically.
