ADDING TO THE SQUARE

SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND INFORMATION CENTER AREA: 5000 SQ.M. ORCHHA, MADHYA PRADESH SEMESTER VI THE SITE NESTLED WITHIN THE TEMPLE COMPLEX OF RAJA RAM MANDIR AT OCHHA, WITH ABUNDANCE OF HERITAGE AND CULTURE TO ITS SURROUNDING i.e. CHATURBHUJ TEMPLE AND PALKHI MAHAL, SEEKED A DESIGN SOLUTION WITH A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF HERITAGE POTENTIAL AND OPTIMUM USAGE OF SPACES FOR A GROWING SMALL TOWN WITH DAILY CONFLICTS BETWEEN THE SPACES TRAPPED AND IDENTITIES LOST: WITH OBSCURE INTERFACES AND DIMINISHING CHARACTER. THE STUDY AND SITE ANALYSIS’ INFERENCES SHOW THAT ORCHHA’S HERITAGE STRENGTH IS UNEXPLORED BY THE AUTHORITIES WHICH WERE POTENTIALLY UNTAPPED DUE TO LACK OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND EMPLOYEMENT OPPORTUNITIES, LOST FOR THE LOCALS DUE TO WEAK ORGANIZATION SKILLS. HENCE THE PROPOSAL WAS INTENDED TO TAKE CARE OF THE DEFICIT AND BEHAVE AS A MAGNET FOR THE TOURISM AND CATALYST FOR GROWTH

In India, the deities, prayers, rituals, customs are part of the everyday life as is any economic or social TWEAKING THE MASS TO ADJUST SPACES activity. Yet the importance or fragility of its built or natural heritage is often not understood by the Indian on the street because of lack of awareness, discontinuity in traditional environment-sensitive practices and high pressure of increasing population. Orchha is one such typical example in India. Being one of the many historical heritage towns of India with an irreplaceable wealth of medieval architecture, which is very much a part of the fabric of the town. It has to a large degree, stood still in time witnessing ravages of time, desolation and neglect and some degree of unimaginative development and conservation efforts. Conserving the built heritage of Orchha is necessary to safeguard the architectural inheritance EXTRUDING TO FULFILL AREA REQUIREMENTS of the region and to foster tourism which is a major economic activity of the town and it can grow with proper planning through a more sustainable and environmentally conscious development of basic tourist facilities. Also, the intervention should GUEST HOUSES speak about the cultural heritage of the area by reviving SKILL DEVELOPMENT CENTRE the lost architectural style of ADDITION OF BRIDGING MASS the medieval town not only by TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE STAFF HOUSING replication, but by bringing the CANTEEN spatial essence with modern interpretations and providing it a new language altogether without overpowering the existing monuments. PIT STOP

MULTIFACILITY HUB AREA: 5500 SQ.M. KANDIVALI WEST, MUMBAI SEMESTER V IN ADDITION TO THE EXISTING RAILWAY AND ROAD NETWORK, NEW METRO LINES ARE PROPOSED FOR CONVENIENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT SOLUTION IN MUMBAI. ONE OF THE PROPOSED ROUTE IS METRO 2 WHICH LIES ADJACENT TO THE SITE THE OBJECTIVE OF THE BRIEF WAS TO EXPLORE THE IDEATION OF AN ARCHITECTURAL INTERVENTION OF DIFFREENT USES AND IDENTIFYING THE USE OF AN APPROPRIATE FORM FOR GIVEN FUNCTION IN THE BACKGROUND OF A DENSE URBAN AREA FOR THE PROPOSED METRO STATION AT LINK ROAD JUNCTION NEAR DAHANUKARWADI. THE DESIGN PROPOSAL HAD TO BE SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS AND THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONCERNS OF THE LOCALITY, UNERSTAND THE VALUE OF URBAN LAND, AND TO BECOME SENSITIVE TO THE CHANGING FUNCTIONALITY OF THE AREA ADJACENT TO THE ROAD LOCATION: DAHANUKARWADI, KANDIVALI WEST HIGH RISE TOWERS LOW RISE BUILDINGS CHAWLS

HEAVY TRAFFIC WAS OBSERVED DURING THE WORKING HOURS AND PEAK TIME.THE TRAFFIC FLOW WAS MORE TOWARDS SOUTH DURING THE MORNING AND IT WAS MORE TOWARDS NORTH DURING THE EVENING.

TRAFFIC HELPS IN DECIDING THE ENTRY AND EXIT POINTS THE METRO LINE ON THE SITE WOULD INCREASE THE DENSITY OF IT ALSO TELLS ABOUT THE MASSING PEOPLE AND DECREASE THE USE OF OTHER PUBLIC TRANSPORT. IN THE SURROUNDING AREA. THE FOLLOWING IMAGE HELPS US TO UNDERSTAND THE SPATIAL LAYOUT OF THE SITE.

A BROADER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SURROUNDING STRUCTURES WILL HELP IN MAINTAINING THE SKYLINE OF DAHANUKARWADI.

EXPLORING THE HERITAGE POL DOCUMENTATION HAJA PATEL NI POL AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT SEMESTER IV

AS PART OF THE DESIGN STUDIO, THE CLASS VISITED THE POLS IN OLD AHMEDABAD, WHERE THE SITE WAS LOCATED. WHILE MEASURING THE SITE, THE STUDENTS CAME ACROSS THE VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE OF THIS AREA. ALONG WITH UNDERSTANDING THE SOCIAL AND COMMUNAL ASPECTS OF THE POLS, THE CLIMATE RESPONSIVE STRUCTURES WERE STUDIED THAT HAD STARTED DEVELOPING SINCE THE 1400S. THE INTRICATE DETAILING OF ELEMENTS, PLANNING OF AN INDIVIDUAL STRUCTURE AS WELL AS A POL WAS STUDIED. THE DOCUMENTATION WAS FOCUSED ON EXTRACTING AND REPRESENTING THE ARCHITECTURE, DIFFERENT TYPOLOGIES, CULTURE AND HERITAGE OF A POL HOUSING THROUGH THE MEANS OF HAND DRAFTED INTRICATE DRAWINGS AND MODELS.

COMMUNITY CENTER AREA: 3600 SQ.M. AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT SEMESTER IV THE AREA IN WHICH POLS ARE SITUATED ARE RAPIDLY CHANGING AND BECOMING URBANIZED. CONGESTED WITH TRAFFIC AND CHAOS, THE ESSENCE OF SOCIAL LIFE IS REDUCING EVERYDAY WITH EVER DEPLATING PUBLIC SPACES FOR THE PEOPLE TO GATHER THE VISION WAS TO ENHANCE THE LIFESTYLE OF THE PEOPLE LIVING IN POL AND OFFER THEM A PLACE TO RELAX, SOCIALIZE AND ADMIRE THEIR CULTURE. THE PROPOSAL HELPS THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY TO HAVE A BALANCED LIFE AND SPACE THAT CAN BE USED FOR HEALTH CARE, DISPLAY THE LOCAL TALENT, HELP WOMEN TO RUN SMALL BUSINESS AND SOCIALIZE. ADDING TO THE LIFESTYLE OF POL COMMUNITY AND SHALL POTRAY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SHOWCASING ‘AN ARCHITECTURE FOR PEOPLE, BASED ON THEIR SOCIO-CULTURAL FABRIC’

THE FOCUS OF THE PUBLICATION WAS RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION OF NON TYPES. THE PROJECT LOOKS AT A CERTAIN BUILDING TYPES IN MUMBAI WHICH CAN ONLY BE IMAGINED AND MADE IN MUMBAI AND ARE ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE TO THE URBANIZATION OF MUMBAI. THEY ARE IN MANY WAYS MARKERS IN TIME AND SPACE THAT RECORD A CERTAIN SLIPPAGE, ANOMALY, IN THE GENERAL SETS OF LOGICS OPERATING WITHIN THE URBAN FIELD. SOMETIMES THEY ALSO PRESENT A POTENTIAL IDEA, OR A TYPE, THAT CAN BE DEPLOYED WITHIN THE CONTEMPORARY URBAN CONTEXTS. IN THIS INTENSE FIELD OF EXCHANGE WE HAVE NOTICED THE EMERGENCE OF CERTAIN BUILDING TYPES THAT OTHERWISE WOULD APPEAR ABSURD AND ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE IN ANY OTHER URBAN CONDITIONS. AND THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY A SINGULAR CONDITION, UNIQUE IN THEIR PRESENCE AND CONCEPTION.

THE PUBLICATION INTENDS TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES AND RECODE THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT REGULATION CONTROLS 2034 OF MUMBAI. IT REDEFINES HOW THE LAWS CAN BE USED TO BENEFIT THE DEVELOPERS AS WELL AS THE ENVIRONMENT. IT ALSO FOCUSES ON RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION OF DIFFERENT STREET TYPES. THE DCR IS PRIMARILY ABOUT DEVELOPMENT AND SPEAKS ONLY OF THE ROADS. STREETS, ARE NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF DEVELOPMENT. THE ONLY MENTION OF STREET IS WHEN IT IS TALKING ABOUT THE URBAN VILLAGES AND EVEN THEN, IT TALKS ABOUT THE CODES FOR ROAD WIDENING. AUTOMOBILE. BUT WHAT ABOUT PEDESTRIANS? THE COMPETITION SEEKS THE CREATION OF A MIDDLE SCHOOL (AGE GROUP 5-12) THAT COMPLETELY NEGATES THE PRESENT DAY ‘BENCH-TABLE-CHALKBOARD’ IDEA OF A CLASSROOM AND A REGULARIZED BUILDING TYPOLOGY OF A SCHOOL. THE COMPETITION SEEKS IDEAS FROM PARTICIPANTS TO CREATE A FUN BUILT ENVIRONMENT FOR A MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT UNDERSTANDS THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF EACH CHILD YET BEING VERY COLLABORATIVE IN NATURE. THE SCHOOL SHOULD STRIVE TO CREATE A NEW PEDAGOGICAL SPACE THAT EMPHASIZES ON PEOPLE-ORIENTED DESIGN IN BEHAVIORAL TERMS AS THEY INTERACT AND USE SPACES.

SUN PAVILLION AREA: 800 SQ.M. UTTAN, MUMBAI KESHAV SHRUSHTI TRUST . COMPETITION THE COMPETITION IS DEDICATED TO THE GLORY OF SUN AT KESHAV SHRUSHTI CAMPUS, UTTAN. THIS CONSTRUCT WILL BE A THE CULMINATION POINT OF A JOURNEY THAT VISITORS UNDERTAKE THROUGH A NATURE TRAIL AND OFFER A MOVING, POTENT AND IMPACTFUL EXPERIENCE AT EXIT. THE CHALLENGE IS OPENENDED ON THE PHYSICAL NATURE OF THE CONSTRUCT BUT SEEKS A SPATIAL SOLUTION THAT EFFECTS A SHARP DISCONNECT FROM THE PRECEDING ACTIVITY TO EVOKE AWE, WONDER AND A MOMENT OF QUIET CONTEMPLATION IN THOSE WHO PASS THROUGH IT.
