ALAN DUGINAN

KIRK MCKOY

On April 29th 1992, four LAPD officers were

aquitted of all charges against the rodney king beating. Though caught on video tape, the Venture County court system found the officers not guilty of police misconduct against the nearly fataly wounded Rodney King. This triggered the gnarliest city wide riot. LA was filled with chaotic looting & violent acts of arson.Nineteen Ninety does not claim owership of any of these photos. The rest of the photo set can be seen on the Los Angeles Times’ website: www.framework.latimes.com/2012/04/19/photos-from-los-angeles-riots

In The Flesh

By JKB Fletcher

“Whether it be of a human body or a goldfish, the images are captured up-close to exaggerate abstraction. The images represent flesh in the form of an ambiguous landscape and are painted on linen with oil paints. The themes to this series relate with simplicity, beauty, nature and sensuality.

At a glance these works look like photographs but up close you can see that these are actually hyper realistic paintings. JKB Fletcher was born in England and currently resides in Melborne. With the use of perspective, sensuality and lighting he emphasises on reality while provoking thoughts and sensations of physicality and beauty.

RICHARD SAJA

W

hile randomly lurking the through the endless seas of the internet I found one of the most contemporary works of art I’ve seen. Richard Saja a New York designer has sought out a very different yet effective method of expressing his creative side. These are embroidered works on top of very detailed 18th Century styled toiles. With every stich Saja makes he comes one step closer to contemporary perfection. He often depicts his characters doing very traditional tasks but dressed in very whimsical outfits. His use of bright colors and elaborate get-ups, Saja creates pure eye-candy.

When did you start this embroidery work? I’ve been doing this for about 12 years now but it keeps changing, evolving as new projects present themselves.

How did you come up with this idea? It came to me as I woke from sleep.

Got any inspirations?

Piero Fornasetti, from the 70s.

Do you also do the background illustrations? No. I think the concept only holds together when I’m embellishing someone else’s illustrations.

Where can we perhaps purchase some of your work? I’m repped by Snyderman/Works Gallery in Philadelphia and the design work can always be found at Future Perfect in NYC.

MUSIC the darkest shade of blue edgar the beatmaker Archy Marshall aka Zoo Kid switched it up on us and has now put forth a rap album. Odd, we know but it’s actually banging! This dude is talented. It’s pretty impressive to see him incorperate his signature jazzy rock sound into his tracks. And his flow is pretty solid supprisingly. Below is a link to his page where you can stream the album: www.edgarthebeatmaker.bandcamp.com

BOOKFIEND DOOM Good Ol’ Metal Fingers aka Dr. Doom did it again with his new track labeled “BOOKFIEND” produced by New Jersey’s own, Clams Casino. The beat follows Clam’s stylized sound and Doom’s lyrics on point as always. This is the first of many Doom collaborations that are to be released in the next coming months. If you want to listen to more of Clam Casino’s work you can visit his sound cloud: www.soundcloud.com/clammyclams

KILO KISH

FRIENDZONE

More like A+. This chick can friggen sing. Lakisha Kimberly “Kish” Robinson aka Kilo Kish is a vocalist, song writer and all around artist that makes the smoothest new age, expirimental R&B. Born in 1990 and coming straight out of BK, she’s perfect. Kilo has released three albums by herself and two with her former band Kool Kat Klub. She’s worked with The Internet, as well as The Jet age of Tomorrow. Her sound can be described as mix between Uffie, the Internet and Lilly Allen. Her relaxing phycadelic pop tunes can be heard on her soundcloud: www. soundcloud.com/kilo-kish

This group is rad. Made up of two really talented producers, Friendzone is the epitome of electronic hip-hop mellow music. James Laurence and Dylan Reznick, the two members of Friendzone hail from the talented filled Bay Area of Oakland, California. It seems that anything spawned from that part of the world is destined for greatness or gang violence but whatever. This awesome album is downloadable on their bandcamp for only 5 bucks! Streaming is free as always. Definately don’t sleep on them. Their bandcamp can be found below, enjoy: www.friendzone.bandcamp.com

So, twitter has a music app now that allows you to stream your favorite artists off your phone. The app uses Rdio or Spotify depending on which account you prefer using. Once you sign in to your twitter account it automatically links your followers and following. The interface is pretty simple and the idea of a social network having a music app is groundbreaking. The downside is that Rdio and Spotify are the host apps that provide twitter the music so if you dont have an account with either of them this music app befomes pointless. You can sign up for a free account on these sites but of course there are limitations in usage.

ROB BLISS

Featured

here are Rob Bliss’s concept art for Chritopher Nolan’s Dark Knight (2008). He was commissioned to design and give inspiration to the designers behind the opening bank robbery scene. Released only recently, these sketches have only been seen by a select few. Though these are just concepts one can only admire Rob’s dark ingenius work and try and invision his idea’s on the joker. These creepy clown hoard of phsycopaths really gives the Dark Knight a new feel. Originally Rob had not

intended for these concepts to reach the surface but I think we can all say we are glad they did. Rob shows us this gang of misfits blindly following the Joker and his wild and diabolical antics. Rob really thought out of the box these works. He followed Christopher Nolan’s idea of a contemporary Batman tale with new age villians that seem ultimately probable in this twisted day and age. With that he also worked in classic ideas that follow the nature of the character, The Joker. Now we are just left to think what if Christopher Nolan decided to use ALL of these clown minions. The story line would be very different maybe for the better maybe for the worse. The world will never know. All we will know is these concept designs are entertaining and beautifully rendered. You can see more of his work as well as more concept art as well as sketches and various digital designs that Rob put together for the Dark Knight on his website below.

Independent

filmmaking is a field of passion, creativity, and hard work. Film makers and their crew work collectively to create and perfect their final cut and project, some in hopes it will lead them to a major breakthrough amongst large film and entertainment companies. Troma Entertainment, co-founded by director Lloyd Kaufman produces independent films and strives to promote the world of independent art as a whole. The 38 year old entertainment company based out of Long Island, New York is giving some small time film makers a chance to screen their work to a major audience with Tromadance, a film festival held in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The festival held at Asbury Lanes, screened an extensive catalog of both feature and short films over April 12th and 13th. Kaufman started the festival 14 years ago, after submitting the film Cannibal: The Musical to the Sundance Film Festival with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. After paying to submit the film and never even getting a “fuck you” letter, the trio took their film to Sundance, rented a room, and had a single feature film festival at the same place and time. After the event turned out to be a success, Kaufman and Parker decided to to make a festival where you did not have to pay to submit a film or pay to attend. “It’s everything that Sundance isn’t” said Kaufman. Tromadance has it’s own committee who selects the films that will be screened, meaning Kaufman has no involvement in selecting what will be shown.

Jeremy Newberger & Seth Kramer

Among the films screened this year was Évocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie, produced by Ironbound Films out of Garrison, New York. The documentary showcases the life of Morton Downey Jr. and his talk show that peaked in popularity during the late 1980’s. Directors and Ironbound founders Seth Kramer and Jeremy Newberger were both in attendance at Tromadance for the showing of their film as well as a short Q&A with the audience after it’s screening. The two spoke very passionately about the film, noting that it had just started as a pet project between them and their third partner Daniel Miller. “He was a crazy T.V. icon, we all watched it, we were all glued to it. It was an absolute passion project, we all love the show. We had to reflect our High School childhood.” said Newberger. After running into Kaufman at the Tribeca Film Festival, (and seeing him thrown out on The Morton Downey Jr. Show) Tromadance approached Ironbound to screen the film. “It was a no brainer, it’s also a similar circus to the Troma fan base” Newberger remarked. After the screening at Tribeca, the film was picked up by Magnolia and premiered in theaters in major cities earlier this year.

The fourteenth annual Tromadance was also met with an original Troma screening of Return to Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 1. “We did that because Troma is kind of famous and because it would draw more eyeballs t the new film makers. It’s a work in progress showing” said Kaufman. Included on the list of Tromadance guests was the cast of RTNH Vol. 1, including actress Tara Miller and first time Tromadance attendee. Miller became involved with Troma while attending Hoths University. One of her friends interning at Troma suggested she come in for an audition. While recalling the event, Miller said, “I had never done any film work or anything big, so I just sucked it up. I composed my own monologue, went in a super weird witch outfit, delivered the monologue and got an on spot call back. I went back about nine times and got the role. I ran outside to call my Mom and the rest is history”. Miller plays the only female cretin in the newest Tromasterpiece. She is initially part of the glee club, but transforms partway through the film, wreaking havoc on the residents of Tromaville. She will reprise her role in RTNH Vol. 2, but nothing is set in stone about any future Troma films.

Tara Miller, Troma Actress

Tromadance will return to Asbury Lanes in 2014 to screen an entirely new catalog of independent films. The atmosphere, the love, and the passion of each attendee is felt through the entire building, bringing together people of all walks of life. The Tromadance film festival is something you have to attend to really appreciate, so keep your eyes open for next years festival. You can follow Troma on all major social media networks and submit your own independent film for Troma review on www.Tromadance.com!

Quasimoto aka Madlib has

released a new album. For those who are unfamiliar with who Madlib is, he’s the beatmaker behind Madvillainy. The infamous Loop Digga has returned, no pun intended. And can I just say, FUCK YES. It has been 7 years since Quasimoto released an album, but this gem is well worth the wait. Once again Madlib destroys the soundwaves with his signature laid back hiphop instrumentals as well as his classic quasimoto flow. Yessir Whatever’s release date is on the 16th of June however, the album can be found on Stones Throw’s website below. They are offering digital downloads only at the moment and pre-orders for the CD or Vinyl. Both the CD and the 12 inch have a peelable sticker as seen above that reveals another work of art underneath Lord Quas. Yessir Whatever consists of 12 tracks. Currently Madlib is on tour and will be playing a 21+ DJ Set at 1015 Folsom in San Francisco CA, on the 7th of June. Featured to the right is what the actual album looks like and the backside cover art by Jeff Jank. Here on Stones Throw you can stream previews of Yessir Whatever:
