Case Study 1 Hazelwood School Designer: Gordon Murray + Alan Dunlop Location: Glasgow, Scotland

Emotions Expressions & Experiences - A Systems approach

Built: 2007 Theme: Visual, sound, tactile clues

About the project Hazelwood is a state school for the teaching of life skills to children and young people with severe and highly complex needs. It sits in a park land setting within a clearly defined neighbourhood and building conservation area, to the south of Glasgow. The design focuses on creating a safe, stimulating environment for students and staff.

Inference: In this project, the natural and artificial components enter into a dialectical relationship, maximising the input of multi-sensory information to the users. In addition to this, it provides a space full of rich surprises and changing spatial experiences, always in close relationship with the natural realm and its elements. Also, the provision of a general, intuitive framework for the creation of space, ensures the orientation of the senses and cognitive impulses. Case Study 2 Novo Nordisk Corporate Centre Designer: Henning Larsen Architects Location: 2880 BagsvĂŚrd, Denmark

Emotions Expressions & Experiences - A Systems approach

Built: 2013 Theme: Light, Shadows, and Slow Dynamics

About the project The corporate centre is inspired by the complex insulin molecule. The helix structures of the molecule have inspired the round shape of the building and the spiralling, inner staircase with dynamic, white balconies in the atrium. It has aimed at creating synergy between employees across professional fields and between employees and guests from all over the world.

Play of light by creating skylights at various angles

Artificial lighting system

Inference: The architecture is characterized by clean simple lines with play of light- natural as well as arti ficial. This play of light intrigues the sense of peace and clamness in oneself. Helical structure, circular shape, movements and flows, colour temperatures, skylights that poetically disperse daylight into the space, ornamentation, tectonics, rhythms

Design brief and program requirements CLIENT BRIEF TECTONA GRANDIS FURNITURE is a brand which has emerged with a view to introduce sturdy, visually appealing yet contemporary furniture for the current market. It is a reflection of their passion, creating 100% teak wood furniture and products to ensure a strong yet classy finish to the products. They believe in creating something which is simple yet significant. PROJECT To design an exhibition space to display furniture with very few extra elements. A space that is pleasant and welcoming, simple and crisp. PROBLEM STATEMENT To design an exhibition sapce with an idea of creating space inside a space. A space which contains small spaces planned in a way so as to not to break the notion of it being very longitudinal and one directional. A space that is enhanced by introducing shringar, karuna, adbhut and veer ras in combination with sensory factors of the space. CLIENT REQUIREMENTS -Highlighting the furniture and not the space. -Interactive display. -Instead of keeping single furniture pieces, each furniture must be kept in synergy with the other. -The purpose of the exhibition is to sell maximum products. -Space should be pleasant and welcoming. -less is more TARGET AUDIENCE Designers or big brands with whom they wish to collaborate to expand their business, known clients, students from similar background, general public.

Product Analysis

Concept The initial idea was to not break the linearity of the space. To achieve that a parallel display was planned with a central movement zone.

After client study and introduction of their requirements (a warm, cosy and a homely space), the decision to break the spaces into four zones and assigning each zone a space was made. This layout was decided on, as it was to be made an interactive exhibition space.

Starting with the entrance, an introductory display with a graffiti behind was planned in order to create a strong first impression. It has a small booklet which speaks of Tectona Grandis Furniture.

Further moving into the space, introduction to intensity was focused on. Intensity in terms of amount as well as it’s impact. In order to do that, arches were introduced with the idea that Tectona is about lines and curves, thus combining the two forms to make one. They also became the backdrop for furniture display. Increasing intensity was expressed with the increased number of furniture pieces that were displayed against the 3 arches from entry to exit and was also with a heavy and light display on left and right side. Colour of the arches were selected on the basis of emotions it is to impart in that zone, i.e. yellow: adbhut ras, black: to break from the adbhut ras and just express veer ras which by default is beautifully imparted by the furniture pieces, and blue: yet again building on the paused adbhut ras experience.

Other small elements like plants and candles were introduced to trigger the senses, thereby creating a warm, welcoming vibe just like home. Carpets, Lamps and lighting systems helped bring life to the space.

The whole experience was summed up as a person move towards the end where one on one interaction with the designer helps him/ her to know why Tectona is different and better than the others. It is then, that they know, what they just experienced is not something to ponder on for a while but to cherish daily.

Plan with zoomed in details of vertical elements in the space

Final plan and section with concept description The idea behind creating the arches was to show the increase in intensity in the space. Also, these arches form the backdrop for furniture display. The yellow colour creates an atmosphere of warmth and coziness and its placement in the entrance is justified because from the outside, with the black brick wall, the contrast of yellow catches the person’s eye passing by the gallery hence inviting him inside. Black brick evokes the feeling of boldness, which slowly translates into peace and calmness as one move to the third arch which is blue in colour. At the end, an interaction corner in semi-isolation, for designer to interact with his clients or visitors. The increasing intensity in the space is shown by the majorly two things: 1. Increase in the size of arches; 2. Increasing number of displayed furniture pieces. This heavy side of the space is balanced by the light display of furniture on the opposite wall. Thus creating a harmony in the gallery.

Introductory Display | The karma chair ( from where tectona’s journey started ) displayed on a shelf against a 3D backdrop graphic of the tree rings that is symbolic of the brand Tectona Grandis. It represents the core/ roots of this established brand. Also, at the edge of the ring is an incense burner with chilled -out music allowing you to give yourself time and space away from the hassles of everyday living. This effect of good aromas, helps raise serotonin in the brain.

Hanging partition | Made of wooden plates, brass rods and fabric forming tectona’s logo. These are the three main materials that are used by the designer to design his furniture. Coming together of these three materials and forming tectona’s logo is expressive enough for one to know what Tectona grandis furniture stands for. Also, the diffused yellow light through the cloth brings the homely, cozy feeling and warmth in the space.

Description Boards | Between the arches there are boards hung on the wall for people to who

wish to know about the furniture that is displayed. These boards have description of the furniture, it’s specifications, uniques qualities it holds and contact details. These boards are strategically placed so that one must sit on the nearby furniture while he/ she reads through it, thus indirectly experiencing the furniture piece.

Vintage screen/ room divider | These screens are on the right side of the entrance door. They

become the backdrop for the benches that are displayed against it and also helps to block the overall view of the gallery. It’s partial visibility attracts the visitors since the background colours are very striking, thus letting them experience the furniture and then to move around and look at the exhibition.
